Jessica Shirvington is the author of THE VIOLET EDEN CHAPTERS also known as THE EMBRACE SERIES, stand alone novel, BETWEEN THE LIVES and has an exciting new duology called DISRUPTION on the way in 2014.
An entrepreneur, author, and mother living in Sydney, Australia, Jessica is also a 2011 & 2012 finalist for Cosmopolitan’s annual Fun, Fearless Female Award. She’s also one of the lucky few who met the love of her life at age seventeen: Matt Shirvington, a former Olympian and current sports broadcaster for Foxtel and Fox Sports. Married for twleve years with two beautiful daughters, Sienna and Winter, Jessica knows her early age romance and its longevity has definitely contributed to how she tackles relationships in her YA novels.
You know by now that I love these books. They're perfection in my eyes and reliving this story was the best decision I've ever made. This is my (very close) second favourite of the series and I adore it so much.
When I read the books for the first time, the first 3 books were out already so I had to wait for book 4 and 5 and let me tell you they were the longest wait ever. The cliffhanger on this book made me want to cry thinking about waiting for the next one but boy was the next one even worse.
I could gush about these books all day. Violet and Lincoln's story is spectacular and I just can't get enough. I still adore Phoenix, especially in this book onwards. I love Spence, Steph, Zoe, Salvatore, Griffin, Onyx, Dapper, etc all too and I'm just feeling all the feels while reading these books. I love them so much.
Spence. I love this guy. Jessica Shirvington, please, please, PLEASE make a spin-off series with Spence. He so deserves his own book. I liked the little insight we got about is family (or lack of) albeit, it made me sad for him. If you could hug a fictional character, I'd smother him. His loyalty was relentless and every time that guy opens his mouth, I either gush or smile. 1 word - or 2. SPIN.OFF.
The guy is amazing.. and yes, he is my favourite. Apart from maybe Phoenix. Maybe the same. Which I am getting to.
I don't know If I'm the only one here. But I love Phoenix- I have since book 1 and I will until the last one. How anyone can blame him for how he is is beyond me. He was judged and cast out before he said a word. He's finally experienced love- a completely new, unknown and very scary feeling and he has no clue what to do or how to act. He's fighting the darkness inside that he never asked for and struggles for control every single day, he only wanted her to live him and he may have gone about that wrongly, but how can he know this when no-one has taught him right from wrong. He had no role models, no life education to tell him how to cope with these feelings he's experiencing. Instead he has to helplessly exist and stand there seeing the person he loves love another. Yeah I hate Licoln. He's done nothing wrong but because of him Phoenix is miserable and will never be with the person he loves. This love triangles getting boring. Anyway the bombshell at the end of this book. Was well.. Wow. I hope book 4 is out soon thats all I have to say! Poor James! Blaming himself for being a bad dad, thinking it was all his fault. He's finally starting to get his life back on track and he comes home to find his daughter back from frickin Greece and his 'dead' wife standing in the kitchen. Yeah that's normal. Can't wait to see how that turns out!;D.
"'Violet!' Lincoln said, then sighed. 'You don't love him. This isn't real. You know what's real and it's hard and it hurts and we can't...Damn it, Vi--we're real!'"
"'I love you so much that I can't trust myself. I'd die for you, give up all my power for you. I'd give you my soul in an instant, even if it meant I had to spend eternity in torment--just for one moment with you as mine.'"
Favorite Character: Lincoln. May I direct you to the quotes above?
First Line: I'm going to give the first line to chapter one, as the prologue is from the POV of Violet's mother, Evelyn.
"Smooth black lines bled from me--soul to hand to paper--begging or release."
My Musings: Jessica Shirvington has done it again: she has created an impossibly well written novel that kept me reeled in the whole time. Emblaze was an intense novel--not just in the insane plot, but also in the decisions that had to be made, and the love 'triangle' that we've been watching thus far. Shirvington's writing has the ability to plant the reader right in the middle of the action--the reader isn't just reading about what happens, they are experiencing it right along with the characters.
In this installment, we follow Violet, Lincoln, and the rest of the crew as they journey to Greece to stop Phoenix from unleashing Lilith from the pits of Tartarus. In my opinion, this novel had the best and most intense plot of the series thus far. There was action on every page--they were fighting exiles, or Phoenix stops in for a visit--there was always something new happening. Add in a volcano and the possibility for mass destruction, and you've got one of the best book plots in the history of book plots!
I once again enjoyed Violet as a character. She's relatable, knows her limits, and fights for what she believes in. She's willing to sacrifice anything, even her own life, for those that she loves, and that is an ever present thing in this novel. Her selflessness is very admirable. Lincoln--we finally see Lincoln's true feelings. AND BOY WAS I HAPPY! I had been waiting for this profession for what seems like decades (even through I haven't been alive more than one...). For you Lincoln-Violet shippers, your dreams will come true at the endish of this novel. I know mine did! Spence is also what of my favorite characters. He's noble, brave, a little on the reckless side, but he really cares for Violet (friends only!!!), and I just really enjoy his comedic relief that he provides over the course of the novel.
Now Mrs. Shirvington! I have a bone to pick with you! How could you leave us with that ending?! We have an unexpected character, an evil exile, and just whattt?!?! To all you Aussies out there--I totally envy the fact that you have Endless. The fact that it doesn't come out over here until late this year is killing me. I NEED to know what happens! Do you here me?! I'm DYING to know! Okay. That is all.
Emblaze was the epitome of a great novel. It had adventure. It had fighting. It had romance. It had everything that you could possibly want in a novel. If you have not yet read this wonderful series, you really should: I can guarantee you that you will not regret it.
I don’t know if I have ever been as conflicted as I am right now by this book. I read Embrace last year and became a fast fan of The Violet Eden Chapters and I loved Entice even more than the first. Did I really like Emblaze? Yes. Will I continue on with the series? I don’t think so. So I am going to do this review in two parts, I’ll start off with what made me like Emblaze and then move onto why, even though I really liked the book, I won’t continue on with the series.
So, what did I love about Emblaze? This series so so action packed and Violet is one of the most kick-ass female MC’s I have ever had the pleasure of reading about. She is so head strong and physical, it’s awesome. She takes charge of every knife in the road that is thrown at her and refuses to sit back and be protected by the men around her. She is more than capable of kicking ass and taking names and is by no means afraid to do so. I also adore Lincoln, he is a total alpha and utterly oozes sexiness to me. He knows Violet so well and is perfectly willing to take a back seat because he recognizes just how capable she is and is constantly praising her for it. Those are the two characters that are most talked about from the series but I have to say that the supporting characters here are just as great as the main ones. Everyone from Hades bar owner, Dapper to Violet’s father are so well developed and feel like they are just as important as the heads of the tale.
I also have come to really love the unique angel lore that Shirvington has so expertly weaved. The back history of the exiles and the role of the Grigori in the grand scheme of things all comes together so well to create a backdrop of an epic war of the worlds. I definitely appreciate that while this is a tale of angels and those that have fallen, it does not feel like a religious tale at all. There was even a scene where Violet had mentioned seeing someone praying and was uncomfortable with doing so herself because that had never been a part of her life. I am always so pleased with the authors ability to have such religious figures be so present in the story and yet make religion feel like a subtle undertone to it all.
So at this point you are probably thinking “that is all so positive, why would you not continue on with the series?” Well I really think that the angst is what has killed it for me. Through the three books in this series that I have read I have loved Lincoln and Violet and thought that there reason for fighting their attraction to one another was well done and believable. I understood why they fought it so adamantly and while I wanted them to be together it made sense why they weren’t. But by the end of Emblaze I have to say I am over it. I am done with the back and forth. I mean these two people KNOW that they are soul mates, they ache when they are around each other and they ache even more when they are apart. I had hoped that we would get some resolution and togetherness from them by the end of this one but I really felt like there relationship went no where, and I can’t deal with them fighting it anymore. The worst part is, had they decided to stop fighting the attraction when Emblaze ended, I most definitely would have continued on with the series so I could have had the pleasure of finally reading about them together. But this is an instance where it’s just getting dragged out far too long and it’s really becoming quite tedious and too annoying for my taste.
My reason for not continuing on is totally a personal reason and I know a lot of people probably won’t agree with it but I am just ready to say goodbye to the characters. I will definitely read spoilers to see where these characters go in the last two (possibly 3) books in the series but I won’t be putting myself through them, that’s for sure. So take this review as you will, it’s a positive review that ends in an unhappy way I guess.
An Advanced Reader's Copy was provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.
Thankyou Jessica for a read worth waiting for, just another twelve months till Endless.
Love the idea of finding out how Linc and Vi are developing emotionally, phsyically and through their souls with their Grigori power and human selves its interesting to read about but I love how its more focused on her life and her as a Grigori warrior not so much her love for Linc or Phoenix.
The climax when Vi is hanging on the edge and Linc admits all just had me fogging up my reading glasses and Spence gave great comical relief when things were getting so frustrating and heart racing as I felt all of Vi's emotions when her soul was clawing out of her. It was a great burden to feel those emotions so strongly through a character, how strongly she felt about Linc and the turmoil she faced with choices of her family and friends.
It was also interesting to see how she was developing her powers along the way and I really got a sense of power as she was growing stronger. I loved how Linc, even just by being there that night in the park hunting the exile or training her in the park was supporting and released pain that I had built up as I was feeling Vi's emotions - He really did help release the tension she was feeling and you know there is so much more to them that you cant explain or answer because it runs deep to the core that not even Vi or Linc understand.
I did feel, when Steph was healing fast that I thought she mightve been developing to be what Dapper could be - which wouldve explained that connection or vibe I got off when Dapper was defending Steph and always around her and being really nice but shitty when Salvatore rocked up and then he goes quiet, so thought then it might be that he had feelings for her or she might be supernatural like he is and he was guiding her and I was expecting that to develop a bit more. But it turned out the complete opposite!
Was really hanging out to hear Linc's reaction to Vi explaining that she can travel the realms and talks to her angel maker, the idea of her keeping things from him about her power and from others confused me but I feel will only be answered later on down the track - Now I know what you mean about waiting for the characters to reach the right spot before closing the chapters.
Only thing that bugged me was waiting a year for the next book - Enticed and Emblazed were realsed so close together which had me thinking you, Jessica, might be keeping it to a 6 month period between releasing books, but a year is a hefty wait! I know it will be worth it, but a year is ages away!
I love Phoenix and OMG I'm just OVER the Lincoln and Violet love, connection thing. Please that needs to be resolved in the next book otherwise I'm not going to be able to handle it. Overall, I really did enjoy this book. It was reasonably paced and kept me reading for answers. Chapters ended on mini-cliffhangers so it was an addictive and fast read. I love Spence and Phoenix they're my baes but please just resolve the love, connection thing. It's driving me mad!
This book was so freaking good- it was action packed and full of romance which I loved. I really enjoy this series and I'm looking forward to reading the next books.
Emblaze was great. I don't know what it is about this series but it just keeps getting better. Violet and Lincoln's relationship (or lack of) is heartbreaking. I just want to scream for them to be together. Its obvious thats what they both want! But then at the same time I can't help but be curious about what would happen if Phoenix manages to get her back. grrr... Choices, choices!
Again in this book there is a wealth of mythology and Jessica retells old tales weaving them into the Violet world seamlessly. So much of my love for these books is driven by the characters and their relationships but at the same time it is all balanced in a fast moving action packed plot. The grigori travel to Greece to try and stop Phoenix from opening up the gates to hell and Violet and Lincoln have to work with new grigori that are from the academy. I liked the addition of these characters, especially Morgan. It was nice for Violet to have another girl around besides Steph and you can tell that Josephine is going to be trouble in the future. One of my favourites is still Spence. He is such a good friend to Vi even though he doesn't always agree with her decisions. Anyway, can I just say the scene where Violet has to wear all the jewellery to go and see the keeper ----- hot, hot, hot! I will forever be picturing that spider web around her leg.
The other part I loved was the Phoenix chapter. I was starting to get really angry at him for so many things but then reading that was like wiping the slate clean and I loved him all over again. Now I just want to see him do the right thing but I have this awful feeling it is not going to go that way:( And was it just me or did anyone else think we might be seeing more of the rogue grigori Gray. My hottie alarm sounded loud and clear with him!!
These books are awesome, I don't know what else to say! I am left dying to read the next one and find out what happens. The ending was :0 (oh James!!) and it was so sad when lincoln was declaring his love for her even though he knew it was admitting to something he thought was terrible. :(
WARNING: there is a cliffhanger ending and the next book isn't out for a year, but it is still worth it! I also read in one of Jessica's interviews that there might be more than 4 books which I couldn't be happier about. The more of these books the better!
An Advanced Reader Copy was provided by the publisher for review. Quotes pulled from the ARC may be incorrect and may be subject to change.
Violet is back in the third installment of the series and she is still just as confused. Her growing powers are frightening her and the fact that she can’t be with the one she loves is sheer torture. With all the emotional turmoil Violet goes through she manages to still be as strong as ever.
I can’t even begin to describe how passionate chapter 24 was. It killed me. My heart just went out to these two characters who couldn’t even be together. It’s painful, heartbreaking and if you haven’t been in love or found your soul-mate, you wouldn’t have any idea what it means. I hope people reading this will remember not to be so cynical about romance in novels because not everyone understands what it’s like. I do and trust me when I say what Violet goes through is in a way exactly what happens when you can’t be with someone you love.
Lincoln is this pure and tortured soul and I can’t help but want to learn more about him and his thoughts. I would have found it interesting if this series was written in dual perspectives. And you can’t forget about the secondary characters like Spence and Steph. Too many characters to remember you’ll need a read through just to remember them all. I kind of wished there was one of those lists in the back where you can see their names and who they are and what classification they are.
This was compared to the Twilight series on the back of the ARC and I always wondered why. It’s nothing like that. It may be a paranormal read, but the characters are completely different. The comparison of Twilight in the sense that there are warriors (with special powers which I always found the coolest) and the forbidden love she has with her soul-mate, plus the love triangle. I have to admit I like Violet as a character only because she wasn’t someone you can mess with.
Characters Loved all the character development
Pacing/Length Pacing is good enough. I wasn’t bored at all either.
Cover/Design Definitely pretty, but I always had issues when the head is cut off in book covers LOL
Plot So great! Glad some questions were answered!
Overall, a wonderful addition to the Violet Eden Chapters!
I read all 3 books in 2days unable to put it down, the worst feeling in the world was when I finished it also like many readers sayin it was until October we would get another taste o this series :( I am getting annoyed at the "can't be together" attitude but I have to say makes it more emotional..... The walking away from each other, ignoring, trying to hide from one another, the little moments of joy then the ripping out of your heart... That's what love it, It reminds me of having a 1st crush and how long it takes and holding onto the days where these little things happen. Love in the beginning is a fantasy until u finally Get it, Phionex is like an x who has a place in ur heart as much as u don't want them too no matter how much they hurt u.
I have never been pulled in so much by a series although I have read many many amazing books, I have never woken up to feel my heart feel like it has broken every time I remember what Lincoln said while holding onto her in the volcano, that I have to go to the book a re read it, I had all the same reactions of violet when she knew her best friend was taken, The way Jessica has written these books made me feel that I WAS violet, I was quite shocked at myself
And apart from the big and obvious questions about next book, I just have one..... Violets dad, I was picking up on things, her dad being called "John" and the restaurant.... Wasn't that the name of her partner before he died when Evelyn and he were taking down lillith? Also it seems to way to ironic that evelyn (eve) her last name when married was Eden am she is the only one able to take down lillith There is a link there I think Jessica has being knowingly or unknowingly leaving little clues through all the books So I say bring on October!!!
One of the most heart wrenching books I've read, this is the best installment of The Violet Eden Chapters yet. The way Shirvington blends Biblical facts with a beautiful tale had me glued to the book till the very last page. Following the events in Jordan, Violet is supported by her friends as they try to stop Phoenix from unleashing something terrible upon the world. But through it all, Violet and Phoenix's connection makes them both falter in their moves and Lincoln must watch, unable to do anything or risk shattering a soul if one of them dies. It is here that Shirvington's eloquent language weaves passion, forbidden love and pent up desire into prose that left my heart aching and tears blotting the pages. "Love will kill us all". Forbidden love, sacrifice, family, friendship; Emblaze has it all.
I can't believe I'm going to have to hold out another year until the next one comes out.
Wow is an understatement. The last half of this book- i couldnt put it down. I LOVE Phoenix. I felt so sorry for him, I think (in this book anyway) I loved him more than Linc. Shoot me but whatever, Pheonix broke my heart. I want to make it all better, I don't want him to hurt. He deserves SO much more, he is so worthy of love it nearly kills me to see that he believes he doesn't. anyyyyway. Intense book, it was amazing...of course. That speech that Lincoln gives toward the end of the book was one of the best speeches ive ever read. That moment and everything to do with Phoenix were the bits ill be re-reading frequently. Cliffhanger warning!!!!!!!!!! October next year?! Why don't you just put me in a coma till then? LOL Jessica Shirvington is amazing, these books are going places.
Wow, where 2 start with this book? I think I have a love-hate relationship with it. Sometimes it's compelling and shocking, other times its cringe-worthy cheesiness had me rolling my eyes constantly.
So Linc and Violet are soul mate partners. After what happened in book 2, they're resisting each other because they saw what could happen 2 them if they "joined" together. I mean when Rudyard died and Nyla was left like an empty broken shell, well who could blame them? But then this was where the cheesiness and cringing comes in. Whenever Violet was around Linc, she just wanted to jump him basically. Ditto for Linc. Now the author made it so that this made sense since they're like SOUL partners so it was their souls wanting to entwine together. It makes sense if u constantly keep that in mind. But if u DIDN'T, if u just read it from a normal human POV, they just seemed really lusty but they had 2 resist jumping into bed together which was annoying. And whenever Lincoln got so obviously jealous/possessive over her I was like.....Ok, I get it man. No one touches her without ur permission. Got it.
Then our heroine gets suicidal near the end, wanting 2 stab herself with the dagger and also wanting 2 let go of her grip when she's hanging over the edge of an active volcano. She figures it'd be easier for everyone if she was dead, which AGAIN makes sense except for the fact that her constant fight-attitude vanished and it seemed out of nowhere when she wanted to sacrifice herself for the greater good. She also got kind of stupid around Lincoln too. For example: she dresses up all hot 2 do this mission and Lincoln can't even look at her and she thinks along the lines of: "Am I that dreadful to him?" GIRL HE CAN'T RESIST U!!!! TO THE POINT WHERE HE DREADS IT. NOT THAT HE REALLY dreads u!!! Gosh.
What really made me love it though was all the amazing quotes in the book yet again that fit perfectly and really made u think over things. Also Lincoln's speech at the end to Violet so she wouldn't let go and fall into the volcano- ok I admit, my heart melted. And then there was of course that shocker ending that I didn't see coming. I also loved how everyone became a team too.
So u can see how torn I am with this book lol. ["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>
Violet, a Grigori is now in vital danger. Well that sounds interesting doesn't it? Sounds a bit of a thriller mixed with angelic twists and turns. NO. Half the time Violet was just trusting her best friend Steph, Spence or Lincoln to get her out of a mess. I was seriously pissed off at her. This heroine is a bit weak in the mind and honestly needs to get her skills together if this book is going to be any better. Shirvington once again takes Griffin and his crew with him on the plane to somewhere, thankfully a different destination, Greece. So why are they going there? Phoenix. Yup that's right he's suprisingly still around and pissing me off like hell. Hmm..that sounds like a pun. Why do they always go somewhere on a plane? I don't really know but this makes it unoriginal and just plain boring.
Anyone how has read this series would probably agree with me (no guarantees here) that the 'we can't be together' is getting old. It was really heart wrenching for me at the start but now it's just making this book childish.
So what did I like about this book? Most definitely the twist at the end which left me shocked as it came totally unexpected. Many authors fail to see that the last line of a chapter keeps most readers going, without this, where would I be? Shirvington, the last line of your chapters never fail to make me panic or get lost in shock. Think of that times 10 for me at the end of the book. Yeah, it was a very interesting and freakish cliffhanger.
Emblaze was one of the better books of this series so far. Hopefully, Endless (that title kinda worries me) will be just as good and complete all my crazy questions. Angel lovers, paranormal and fantasy lovers should totally look out for this book as this really was different to other books I've ever read on angels.
Violet is a tortured soul. She seems like she's going to fall apart, but then she stands up and declares that just because she's a girl doesn't mean she is incapable of showing the world what she's really made of. She is the strongest heroine I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.
Violet's journey is just beginning and yet she's had to do things that most Grigori barely manage to do in their entire life time. I love this series so much that I've lost count of how many times I have read it.
I think this book shows the side of Violet that is weak and strong at the same time. She finds her way by the end of the book as she, quite literally, sacrifices herself to save her family and friends. Violet and Lincoln's soul mate bond is blinding with desire and heartache. It saddens me to read/feel such torment.
OMG AMAZING!! I loved it. I started reading and did not put it down till I had finished (it literally never left my hands till I had finished it) I love Jessica Shirvingtons writing and these are the best books ever. Loved it!! I cannot believe I have to wait a whole year for the Endless!! The wait will be agonizing but I know it will be worth it. Fingers crossed Violet and Lincoln finally get their happily ever after :)
Are you fucking kidding me????
This got rly good towards the end scenes… still waiting out for my two favs to have more scenes together… um yeah I’m glad I kinda got a reason and more depth behind Lincoln’s SOULMATE connection w violet that we don’t stop hearing abt EVER AGH. But anyways 😊 Phoenix+violet 4 life
Hi there!I assume you have read both 2 books already and you know what's going on. I would like to remind you that this is a personal opinion
I don't now how i can describe the series But i must assure you that the moment i started reading the first one i just couldn't stop couldn't pause I just H.A.D to continue reading all the books they released so far.
Once again the storyline and the word Jessica Shirvington created was once again really so capture that i wasn't able to take my eyes from the book. Also realising that the events this time is taken placed to Santorini and as i Greek i felt really honour and pleasure to read that ( Not that i don't enjoy reading in most books but this is a very beautiful Island)
The ending was... literally a bomb!I mean i knew in a way what will happened but i wasn't right 100% and that specific cliffhanger was jaw-dropper!
Some other things :
Phoenix is back... And more dangerous as ever. Okay if you know me or if you have read already my thoughts about the previous books you will know already that i dislike him.. Like ALOT!To this book... Well i didn't change my mind But i had the change to see to his mind,to see more as him since Jessica offered to us a POV from him.. Not that i adore him but still I agree with Violet that no matter how harm planned or going to plan to unleash to the human word there is still some percent of humanity of him.. The problem with me is actually in which form and how you can describe this humanity of his.. At least i made some progress with his a character and I don't want him to get killed! (which is a step)
The star once again to the book was Lincoln... I literally love L.O.V.E this guy. And i know most female readers always fall i-am-evil-guy-but-i-have-a-soul-too but Lincoln is the one who takes credits at least from my own eyes. I think if you didn't like him that much to the previous books i think you are going to love it in Emblaze (at least like him much more at least) One of the reason i adored even more Lincoln was behind in this book we get to see more his feelings to Violet and how he prefer to push those feelings aside so She can be happy and She can be stronger her and him as Grigori..We knew this is what was going but over here you get to see first hand how Lincoln feels not just how Violets reacts with it..
Favourite scene ever: The climax when Vi is hanging on the edge and Linc admits all his feelings he was pressing down for her..
„You smell of winter dew at the first crack of dawn and when you use your power it feels like being submerged in the most intoxicating vanilla cream that I lose myself in it every time and … and you were beautiful,‟ he blurted out, catching us both by surprise. But he went on, ignoring the fact that my hand was still slipping. „So stunning in that dress the other night I could hardly look at you it hurt so much. You are the thing I dread in myself, Violet, because … I love you so much that I can‟t trust myself. I‟d die for you, give up all my power for you, I‟d give my soul in an instant, even if it meant I had to spend eternity in torment - just for one moment with you as mine. Wanting you consumes me. I dread you because I know the risk but I‟m so selfish I want you anyway. I‟d take you even though it could kill you.‟
Violet has some huge choices to make in this book. Where she stands with Phoenix, how much she should be telling her father who is getting increasingly nosy, how she can better protect the friends who know about her life as a Grigori, and probably the most important one, how does she stop Phoenix from freeing one of the most evil people ever known to walk the earth.
Violet once again stuns with her depth and emotion. She feels so alone after she figures out that Lincoln, her soul mate, his not only distancing himself from her because of their connection, but is shielding himself from her as well. They are growing ever apart and it hurts Violet more and more each day she sees him and it’s driven home once again that she can’t have him.
Shirvington has done such a good job in building this story that one can completely see where Violet is coming from. Usually when teenage girls feel that they have no choice but to do something stupid if they had just talked to someone about it everything would have been solved in the first ten pages, and I am normally so frustrated I want to slap them or throw the book across the room. But Violet really doesn’t have anyone she can talk to when it comes to the crunch in this book. Lincoln has for all intents and purposes rejected her, Griffin her leader and mentor is in a different country and if she doesn’t make a decision people she loves and who are helpless, will get hurt.
The one thing that did start to grind on me though towards the end was her continuous mentioning of her soul hurting. Yes, we know Lincoln is your soul mate. Yes, we know you can’t be together. Stop whining about your stomach ache because you have a broken heart and get on with it. It was mentioned just a few too many times for me especially towards the end. It probably grinded a little more because I am still on team Phoenix and still don’t like Lincoln that much.
I will admit, Lincoln grew on me a bit in Emblaze, but only in the “oh, so he is a person with feelings” way. Lincoln is too aloof for my tastes whereas Phoenix shows his vulnerability and his bad boy charm for Violet to see. Phoenix also has his heart in the right place, he may eventually kill Violet, but he does still care in the fact that only he is allowed to kill her, and he will kill anyone else who tries, I like that in a man.
Once again I loved the history woven into this story. The integration of Lilith and historical events that Shivington has linked back to the Angels, everything is so seamless and seems so effortlessly part of the story that it makes everything about the world she has created that much more believable and grounded.
I really can’t say too much more about Emblaze without falling into squee territory, it is absolutely fantastic. Shirvington once again drew me in with her incredibly emotional yet action packed writing. She once again left me with a two day book hangover because I just can’t get this series out of my mind. October 2012 is far too long to wait for Endless but I will still be waiting with eagerness.
Americans: when March comes you are in for a deliciously wonderful and hot treat. The Violet Eden Chapters continues to get better; in Emblaze Jessica Shirvington unleashes all the surprises and raises the stakes higher. At the conclusion of Enticed, the two scriptures that both Grigori and Exiles set out to recover were seized, but each one in the wrong hands – by the wrong sides. If the Exiles obtain the scripture that the Grigori possess then Lilith will be summoned. The Exiles have made an agreement: if the Grigori don’t surrender the second scripture to them then they will use the Grigori scripture to eliminate all future half-angels. The Grigori have no choice; they lose either way. And this is what sets off the line of events in Emblaze. . Where Enticed took us on a journey to Jordan, Emblaze takes us to Greece – the beautiful Santorini Bay to be precise, with the pristine blue waters and the sandstone architecture and buildings layered on the side of the islands. This scenery is simply breathtaking and Jessica does a fantastic job at bringing it to life inside our minds. Besides Santorini Bay we are introduced to more characters that layer the plot in more ways than one – there’s Josephine, the head of the Grigori Academy, whose bitterness towards Violet creates drama and tension whenever they’re around each other; there’s Irin, the Keeper of the Island, who seems to have been written to further expand on this world and the “beings” that inhabit it; and plus a few others, that will spoil the ending of the book for you if I say. . Jessica Shirvington has provided my 19 year old male with a love triangle to be caught up in. Lincoln and Phoenix are equally likeable and it’s hard to decide for Violet – it’s hard for Violet herself to choose love. I cannot fault either one of them; Lincoln is that perfectly supportive and protective man that girls dream of being with and boys dream of being, and Phoenix is that Dark Exile with a past that consumes and forces him to make the wrong decisions and who constantly fights for the humanity that is slowly dissolving inside of him. Poor Violet. . Now, when it comes to the ending I was in wtf-ery mode although I knew where and what the book was leading up to. Emblazed for me was a book that, although complete, was written to introduce us and lead up to book four, Endless. When you finish Emblazed you’ll be grabbing Endless immediately in order to continue the story and discover what happens next. That’s what I did and I enjoyed it that much more. . The Violet Eden Chapters continues to be my favourite angel series; it is the best I have read.
Although it gets frustrating at times. Why can't Vi and Linc just decide screw it and be together. It is getting annoying them not being able to be together. Three books now and we are still no closer than before.
This book was action packed and I enjoyed the role Phoenix played, it was cool getting to see things from his point of view. I now love this badass character a lot more. He is to me the most interesting character in this series.
WOW, is it getting a little steamy in here>>?? The scene with the Incubus was awesome!!! Finally some Vi and Linc action! Even if they were forced into it, I was finally glad to see them get to have a bit of a kiss. :P Ohh and the scenes that followed about Linc dreading of seeing Vi in himself. They were very emotional packed punches that I liked reading about, it was nice to see them talk (kinda) about their feelings. Even though Vi just walks away, basically distraught. To go meet Phoenix. :D
WHAAAATTTT!! They spend the night JUST sleeping beside one another?? No kisses or anything>? The moment is cute in itself but that's all Shirvington is leaving us with until the next book? That is all until next time!??
And the ending>? Vi's poor father, She's back!! I think the mum seems like a bit of a bitch, I have decided that until proven that she has redeeming qualities I do not like her.
It is going to be an incredibly long and cruel wait till October next year. :)
I laugh --- I cry --- I fist pump in the air --- am turning pages faster than I can read --- am in love with so many of the characters --- am left dying to know more --- am now having withdrawals!
That is what this book and this entire series has done to me.
Each book gets better than the last (how unusual is that!?!) and once again I was sucked into Violet's mind and emotions as she now faces the ultimate challenge of going up against Phoenix. The problem is, Violet still sees something in Phoenix I think. Their chemistry is unmistakable (even if it doesn't stand up to what she has with Lincoln IMO). If I didn't adore lincoln so much I was totally be cheering for Phoenix to win her back. One of my favourite chapters was when they were exchanging the scriptures. So cool and then so sad. I felt my heart racing as it all unfolded and then like I was running along with Violet. Lincoln also stepped up in this book. He took charge of the other Grigori and when everything goes down at the end, he gets his chance to shine and show what a worthy partner he is.
I don't know what it is about these books, but Jessica Shirvington manages to draw me in to the story completely and that is so rare.
Can't wait for Endless. In the back of the book it says it won't be out until october 2012 :(
I'm a HUGE fan of the Violet Eden Chapters. A must read series! :D Again I simply could not put this book down. Finished it in a few short Hours. :D
The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 (would'nt let me do 4.5) was, I thought it was missing the romance & passion we have all come to LOVE between Violet, Lincoln & even Phoenix. sure they talked about it, but NOTHING actually happened. :0( There was no amazingly HOT & Heavy kissing with anyone. Very dissapointing. :0( But as always the characters are amazing, the story line is like no other and at the end of it you are again left screaming NOOOOOOOOOOO! I can't wait another 12 months till the next book, I really can't! :D (WOW what an ending, how could you do that to us Jessica? (Just mean :D)I soooooo wanted another chapter or 2) And boy did I cry. Tears of sheer sadness & Pain to tears of joy. Soooooo good and yet as a mother soooo heart breaking too.
Thanks again for such a fantastic story Jessica. We LOVE IT! Fingeres crossed the next book "Endless" has the earth shattering Love scene between Violet & Lincoln we are so eagerly hanging out for. :D the 12 month wait will be sheer torture!
Finally, I dedicated the time needed to read EMBLAZE - because once I delved into it, I knew I wouldn't be able to put it down unless absolutely necessary (e.g. getting yelled at by my boyfriend to get my nose out of the book for ten minutes so I could give the directions while he was driving). Jess - you have done such an amazing job with this series. The characters are so well rounded and work together beautifully, the plot gripping and smart, and the chemistry crackles. Vi's intelligence (and frustration) in recognising the motivations, intent and inherent nature of those around her and her empathy is developing so strongly through the series - it's one of my favourite aspects of the books, cementing my opinion when I first read EMBRACE that it is a strong ya series, paranormal or not. My only regret? That I now have to wait until October to read ENDLESS (!!). xEm
This book was amazing! We saw more action in it then the last one and the ending dropped a bomb on us that we hadn't expected. Even though I feel as if I am supposed to hate Phoenix for all his done to Violet I feel as if he just needs a second chance and we see a breakthrough in him towards the end of the book. Lincoln and Violet still have troubles with each other and think that frustrates me the most in this book but it does keep me waiting on the end of my seat waiting for 12 freaking months for the last book. Spence was a big impact throughout this book, helping Violet and being a really good friend that Violet just needed. Shirvington made a world I would love to live in and be friends with her characters can't wait for the next book even though it's 12 months away!!!!!
