The Yankees vs. the Red Sox. Each baseball season begins and ends with unique intensity, focused on a single question: What's ahead for these two teams? One, the most glamorous, storied, and successful franchise in all of sports; the other, perennially star-crossed but equally rich in baseball history and legend. In The Rivals sports writers of The New York Times and The Boston Globe come together in the first-ever collaboration between the two cities' leading newspapers to tell the inside story of the teams' intertwined histories, each from the home team's perspective.

Beginning with the Red Sox's early glory days (when the Yankees were perennial losers), continuing through the Babe Ruth era and the notorious trade that made the Yankees champions (and marked the Sox with the so-called "Curse of the Bambino"); to Ted Williams vs. Joe DiMaggio; Thurman Munson and Carlton Fisk; Roger Clemens and Pedro Martinez; down to last year's legendary playoff showdown, The Rivals captures the drama of key eras, events, and personalities of both teams.

And who better to tell the story than the baseball writers of the two rival cities? For The New York Times , it's Dave Anderson, Harvey Araton, Jack Curry, Tyler Kepner, Robert Lipsyte and George Vecsey who report on the Yankee view of the rivalry, while The Boston Globe
loch's Gordon Edes, Jackie MacMullan, Bob Ryan and Dan Shaughnessy recount the view from the Hub. And their stories are richly illustrated with classic photographs and original articles from the archives, capturing the great moments as they happened. For Red Sox fans, Yankees fans, or anyone interested in remarkable baseball history, The Rivals is an expert, up-close look at the longest, and fiercest of all sports rivalries.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book from a baseball fan perspective as well as being a Yankee fan. Of course we now know that the scale is probably tipping in Boston's favor over the last 20 years, having transformed into a team from being just a challenger to a winner (including 2018 world series win few days ago), a team that doesn't just play well throughout the season but can also finish strongly.

It was interesting to see how the "rivalry" transformed over last 100 years from an era when players respected the game and each other irrespective of their uniform (Ted Williams a classic example to this effect), to the ultra professional modern era of the free agency where allegiances change based on whats good for players and clubs financially.

The rivalry, also, is something the media feed on and so do the MLB officials as it keeps the game's following strong across generations of Americans.

In reality, the on-field kerfuffles between these two teams since the 1970's are probably no different to what must have occurred over the years between Dodgers and Giants or Cubs and Cardinals or those in other sports (Liverpool vs Manchester United are much more serious fights in the English Soccer world).

The major eye opener for me was learning how Boston fans despite all their frustrations of 86 years, knew how to pick their sporting moments such as cheering for Yankees' Ruth, DiMaggio, Clemens and Jeter on their last appearances at Fenway park. For me this stood out as something missing from Yankee fans, or perhaps there is little written about it. The flip side ofcourse is that Boston fans break out into "Yankees suck" chants at every chance, even if it does not concern the Yankees (such as during the last game of 2018 WS in LA or during Boston Celtics victory parades), thereby indicating their obsession with New York in general and tendency to forget their team's actual feat at hand.

Nevertheless a great read for a Yankee or Red Sox Fan or baseball fan in general.

This Red Sox Yankees rivalry book written about the hardships that both teams have faced in over a century. The book written in 2004, before the Red Sox won the World Series for the first time in 86 years, explains how to notorious Boston-New York rivalry came to be taking it back to when Babe Ruth was on the Red Sox and to the latest 2003 ALCS that that went into 7 games.
