About the author

Rajalakshmi (June 2, 1930 - January 18, 1965) was a Malayalam writer and poet in India. She was born at Cherpulassery, Palakkad; her father was Marath Achutha Menon and mother was Kutty Malu Amma. Professionally she was a lecturer in Physics and worked in many NSS Colleges including the one at Ottappalam. As a notable writer she won the Kerala Sahithya Academy Award in 1960 for her work Oru Vazhiyum Kure Nizhalukalum (A Path and a Few Shadows).[1] It later became a TV serial and was broadcast as a play by All India Radio.[2][3] Her other notable works of fiction are Njaneenna Bhavam (ഞാനെന്ന ഭാവം) and Uchaveyilum Ilam Nilavum (ഉച്ചവെയിലും ഇളംനിലാവും) Her famous poem is “Ninne Njan Snehikkunnu”.

She committed suicide in 1965.

I once read in some book that the biggest pain a human being can have is due to betrayal by loved ones or the regrets associated with the actions they took in their life.

Rajalakshmi writes about regrets and lost love in this book. The narration, the language, and everything associated with this book are simply brilliant. Considering the time period in which this book was written, we can easily say that it is a brilliant creation. If you are someone who has faced tragedies in your life, this book might haunt you for a long time. This is undeniably one of the best books written by Rajalakshmi.

// A Path and Many Shadows & Twelve Stories by Rajelakshmy

From the time I learnt that Rajelakshmy was the first woman to win the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award, I knew I had to get my hands on this one and when i eventually read her stories, I knew why she won the prestigious award. It's such a tragedy to come to terms with the fact that she shall write no more, that as a reader one cannot possibly understand what went on in her mind, and to learn about what inspired her to write in the very first place. At the age of 34, this magnificent woman took her own life leaving no answers behind. She was way ahead of her time, what with procuring a Master's degree in Physics and her eccentricity appears in her stories.

This edition comprises of 12 short stories that carry different themes, almost all of them with women at the focal point. It's important to notice how Rajelakshmy shines light on certain issues, one of them being gender discrimination. The women who star in her stories are bound by duty to serve their families, while having to keep aside their own wants. It is no wonder that Rajelakshmy came under the spotlight for her short story named 'Daughters', because it eventually ended up being my favourite too. This book also has a novel in it; A Path and Many Shadows, one for which she eventually won the Akademi Award. Remani, the protagonist is seen living in patriarchy and later as a grown woman, she must choose the right suitor for herself. It's surprising to see how she ends up settling for something unexpected. All of Rajelakshmy's stories carry a certain kind of heaviness to them. Could one dare to associate Rajelakshmy's personality with her stories? But one thing becomes abundantly clear. Rajelakshmy was s prolific writer, one who knew the ways of the world and didn't refrain from writing about it no matter how bold it may have seemed back in the '60s.

This was a stark contrast to the previous book I read by the author ( uchaveyilum ilamnilavum) which was underwhelming .
Got interested in this unknown ( to me) author , after encountering her character sketch in a book by Anita Nair ( eating wasps).. and later knowing that she committed suicide due to obscure reasons.

The book is set in the Kerala of 50s/60s and reminded me of a way of life I had heard of in my childhood , and grew distant from , as time passed.
Reading this was nostalgic .. and o was astounded at the character sketch ..
I admire Mani for her strong mental faculty and an unwavering mind... And all the youngsters of those days for behaving with decorum , even in relation to matters of the heart.
I especially enjoyed about reading a way of college life that I never experienced.
Recommended to all Malayalam reading enthusiasts.

സ്വയം കല്പിത ചട്ടകൂടുകൾക്കുള്ളിൽ നിന്ന് പ്രതിഷേധിക്കുന്ന, സംഘർഷം നിറഞ്ഞ ജീവിതമാണ് മണിയുടേത്. ചെറുപ്പത്തിൽ ഭയവും നിസ്സഹായവസ്ഥയുമായിരുന്നെങ്കിൽ പിന്നീടത് ധൈര്യമവലംബിക്കുന്നതിലും ഒടുവിൽ സ്വയം നാശഹേതുവാകുന്നതിലേക്കും അവളെ നയിക്കുന്നു. ആശിച്ചത് കൈയിൽ കിട്ടിയാൽ രുചി പോകുമോ? ചങ്ങല മുറുകി ഇരിക്കുമ്പോഴേ വൈരാഗ്യം ഉള്ളോ, അയഞ്ഞു തുടങ്ങിയാൽ പിന്നെയും വേദനയെന്നോ എന്നും പരിതപിക്കുന്ന മണി, പിന്നീട്
മറവി ദൃഢമനുഗ്രഹത്തിനാം എന്ന തത്ത്വമോതുന്നു.
ആത്മാവിൻ്റെ ദാരിദ്ര്യം, തനിച്ച് ജീവിച്ച് വയ്യാതായി, മനശക്തി മുഴുവൻ ചോർന്നു പോകുന്നു എന്ന് പറഞ്ഞു വിലപിക്കുന്ന അപേട്ടനു മുന്നിൽ ഒടുവിൽ സ്വയംബലിയാകുന്ന മണി. കാലത്തിനപ്പുറവും മണിയുടെ മാനസിക വ്യാപാരങ്ങളും ആർദ്രതയും പേറുന്ന ജീവിതങ്ങളെ നമുക്ക് കണ്ടെടുക്കാൻ കഴിയുമെന്നതിലാണ് രാജലക്ഷ്മിയുടെ പ്രതിഭ.

അടുത്തിടെ വായിക്കുന്ന രാജലക്ഷിയുടെ രണ്ടാമത്തെ നോവൽ ആണ് "ഒരു വഴിയും കുറെ നിഴലുകളും". എഴുത്തുകാരിയുടെ പ്രഥമ നോവൽ. അതിനു തന്നെ കേരള സാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമിയുടെ അവാർഡ്.

മണി എന്ന അമ്മിണിയുടെ കഥയാണിത്.
അച്ഛന്റെ മരണത്തോടുകൂടി തകർന്നു പോയ മണിയുടെ മുറചെറുക്കാൻ അപ്പേട്ടന്റെയും. ഒരുമിച്ചു കളിച്ചു വളർന്ന അവർ പിന്നീട് വിപരീദിശയിലായി ജീവിതം. ഒടുവിൽ അവർ ഒന്നിക്കുമ്പോൾ കഥ അവസാനിക്കുന്നു.

രാജലക്ഷിയെ വായിക്കുംതോറും വ്യസനം കൂടി വരും. അകാലത്തിൽ പൊഴിഞ്ഞു വീണ നക്ഷത്രമേ 😢

I always wondered whether it is M.T who influenced Rajalakshmi or the other way round. However, I could never reach a conclusion. Maybe the common Valluvanadan set-up helps all the writers to achieve a common language style (very very unlikely :( ). Anyway, it is an unbelievably brilliant work considering the era in which it was written and the background of the author (I could be accused of being very sexist here). The story is extremely moody, the language poetic, the characters highly empathizeable, the setting with an old world charm; what else you need from a story?
It is mainly about the tragic life of the protagonist woman; her missed opportunities, her missed love and all her burdens. Nothing refreshing, from the point of view of the plot. (It could be due to the fact that similar themes were adopted by lot of authors after this). But, the language is very nostalgic. And it is unbelievable that somebody wrote this in 1960s where the Malayalam literature was still in its infancy. Poor Rajalakshmi suicided and it is a pity that we miss a lot from such a talented writer.

ചുരുക്കം ചില വർഷങ്ങല്ല്ക് മുന്പ് ഈ പുസ്തകതെപടിയും എഴുതുകാരിയെപടിയും മനോര്മാടിലെ ഞായറാഴ്ച പേജിൽ ഒരു കുറിപ്പ് വായിക്കുകയുണ്ടായി. നമ്മുടെ ഒടപളത് ഇങ്ങനോരൽ ഉണ്ടാരുന്നോ എന്ന് അത്ഭുതപ്പെട്ടു. ആദ്യത്തെ പുസ്തകത്തിന്‌ കേരളസാഹിത്യ അക്കാദമി അവാർഡ്‌, എൻ.എസ്.എസ് കോളേജിലെ അധ്യാപിക, പിന്നീട് ആരോടുമൊന്നും പറയാതെ എഴുതി പലതും ബാക്കി വച്ച് മരണത്തെ സ്വയം സ്വാഗതം ചെയ്തു. ഇതൊകെ മതിയായിരുന്നു ഈ പുസ്തകം അന്വേഷിച്ചു പിടിച്ച വാങ്ങാനും വായിക്കാനും. ഇതിന്റെ കോപ്പി കിട്ടാൻ കുറച്ച കഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട്. കൈയില കിട്ടിയപ്പോൾ ഒരുപാട് സന്തോഷം തോന്നി. വളരെ നല്ല ഭാവന ശേഷിയും വൈഭവവും ഉള്ള വരികൾ. ജീവിചിരുനെങ്കിൽ ഒറ്റപ്പാലത്‌കർക്ക് അഭിമാനിക്കാൻ കുറെ കൂടി നല്ല കഥകൾ അവരുടെ തൂലികയിൽ വിരിഞ്ഞേനെ..

ഈ കാലഘട്ടത്തിൽ ഇത് വായിക്കുമ്പോൾ ഒരുപാട് ചോദ്യങ്ങൾ നമുക്ക് ചോദിക്കാനുള്ളപ്പോഴും, അവരുടെ ആത്മനൊമ്പരങ്ങൾ നമുക്ക് മനസിലാകും.. ആദ്യത്തെ മൂന്നാല് പേജുകൾ കഴിഞ്ഞപ്പോഴേക്കും വായന തുടർച്ചക്ക് ഒരു ബുദ്ധിമുട്ട് തോന്നാത്ത എഴുത്ത്. .

ബാല്യം മുതല്‍ സ്വാതന്ത്ര്യത്തിനായി കൊതിച്ച്, കോളേജില്‍ ചേരുന്നതോടെ അത് ലഭിക്കുന്ന,പലര്‍ക്കും ഇഷ്ടമായിരുന്നിട്ടും അവള്‍ തിരഞ്ഞെടുത്ത ആള്‍ സ്വാര്‍ത്ഥനായത് മൂലം താളം പിഴക്കുന്ന മണിയുടെ ജീവിതം.
