Carol Marinelli was born in England to Scottish parents, then emigrated to Australia, where there are loads of Scottish and English people who did exactly the same, so she’s very at home there.

She lives in the outer suburbs of Melbourne—pretty much in her car, driving her three children to their various commitments.

Carol writes for the Harlequin Presents and Medical lines and she also writes contemporary women's fiction (with a dark twist).
When she's not writing she's reading, when she's not reading she's writing.

How depressing was this story? I'll tell you.

The story opens with the martyred heroine regretting giving up her job as a stewardess ( which meant interacting with people all day) to living with and caring for her mother who is in an advanced stage of Alzheimer's. The heroine works from home as the hero's brother's PA. The bright light of her day is when the hero calls about a business negotiation in the works with her employer.

The heroine lies to the hero about her situation - not just sins of omission - but making up stories about her day. There's no good reason for these lies - sorry. Martyr heroines are annoying enough, but own your story.

The hero seeks revenge against his twin (her employer) and uses the heroine as his tool. I love revenge stories - but only when it's against the heroine. Watching two brothers duke it out is not satisfying and adds nothing to the romance.

The hero never considers his mother (who was 17 at his birth) could have been manipulated by his abusive father. All sins are laid at her feet.

The heroine never considered selling her mistress necklace to help with the bill or hire a nurse for her mother. She wears it under her grubby clothes. *sigh*

The ending - is the heroine going to interact with people again? She's pregnant with twins and supposedly happy - although her mother has only been given a few months to live. A nice buzz kill of an epilogue.

Not much romance - a lot of realistic suffering with a heroine who had lank dirty hair most of the time and a bleak outlook on life. Alzheimer's is triggering for me. Others have loved this story, so if these elements don't bother you, you will probably like it. It moves along at a good clip.

I really enjoyed this one despite myself.

Oh sure, I had some issues with the story and with some of the characters, but it still didn't take away from my essential enjoyment. The dialogue was really cheesy in places, but I found it beautiful and haunting instead of annoying. Additionally, I thought the plot could have been much more developed than it was, but again, I read this book at the right time, because it didn't bother me as it usually would.

I really wish, though, that the hero's past had been exploredmore fully. I'd have liked to know more salacious, ultimately heartwrenching details. If I shed a few tears in the process of reading this book, I am refusing to acknowledge it.

I don't remember if I've read any Carol Marinelli before, but I won't be forgetting her in a hurry.

I wasn't going to rate it 5 stars, but I really, really enjoyed myself. And that is what 5-star books are supposed to do for you, so I figured, what the heck? :D

The second of the two damaged brothers and, boy, is he damaged!

This twin is out for revenge and doesn't care who he takes down. Not as good as the first for reasons I can't put my finger on. I did love the tortured hero which is usually something I stay away from. The heroine was a little lacking.

The heroine Charlotte and the hero Zander have been in contact with each other for a while, Charlotte is trying a arrange a business deal with Zander for her boss, but the phone calls they share have also become friendly and she has begun to treasure them. She uses them as a way to escape from the difficulties in her life, caring full-time for her alzheimer's suffering mother is getting more and more difficult. When Charlotte must travel to Greece to help assist her boss Nico, her guilt over having to place her mother in temporary care is lessened by her excitement that she will meet Zander for the first time. Zander has waited a lifetime to get revenge on the twin brother he has never known, whom led a far better life after they were separated, and he plans to use Charlotte as part of this. When they meet on the beach one night Charlotte is shocked to see that Zander is the mirror image of Nico, yet his personality so harsh and different. She is drawn to him as much in person as she was on the phone, and wants to help him with his proclaimed excitement about meeting his twin for the first time. Zander feels something for Charlotte, and not just intense desire, but even though he hates lying to her, he needs to go along with his vengeance plan.

I have tried not to give too much away in this review, there are so many secrets and revelations in this book that I don't want to ruin the explosiveness of it! This is a brilliant book, I couldn't read it fast enough. The passion and depth of feeling between the hero and heroine is simply phenomenal. Individually these characters carry so much pain, and it is heart wrenching to read. Just like the first book in this duet (A Shameful Consequence) the narrative is very distinct, almost hypnotic, and creates a very moving atmosphere.

This is a book that is powerful and brimming with passion and secrets. Recommended.

This is the follow on to "A Shameful Consequence". In this book we learn about Zander, the twin that was left behind to be raised by an abusive father. The second book was just as mesmerizing as the first, but it was also better written. It didn't feel clumsy or awkward like the first. The twists and turns of the plot, along with the tension filled romance were wonderful. I really enjoyed the dynamics between the hero and heroine and especially between the brothers. The heroine was incredibly strong, yet loving enough to be compassionate and forgiving. The author gave us glimpses into her character and thought processes as she came to grips with Zander's betrayal and her mother's illness.

I highly recommend this series, but would suggest reading "A Shameful Consequence" first.

Finally read the second half of this duology. I enjoyed it just as much as the first one. The hero was complex. So often the heroes of novels are supposedly tortured by a bad upbringing but the author doesn't really sell it and you just don't care. Here though CM does a good job of making the hero's backstory compelling without being maudlin. The heroine is a good match for him. And the writing quality is beyond the ordinary for this type of book.

here we have the ubiquitous rich, entitled, bitter greek hero who is out for revenge and doesn't care who he hurts in the process. of course the heroine is caught in the middle. i did like this book much more than some of the recent HP's i've read, and no doubt i'll re-read this one. more a 3.5 star book for me

Marginally better than the first book of The Secrets of Xanos. Still not a very good read. Just OK.

Zander Kargas is out for revenge against his identical twin brother, Nico Eliades. He believes the worldly PA he talks to on the phone can help him exact that revenge, but Charlotte Edwards is simply playing a role and projecting a sophisticated image while caring for her ill mother.

Watching two brothers revenge against each other is not good to me. takes the focus off the novel to talk about revenge. I prefer feel good romances

Carol Marinelli is actually one of my favorite Harlequin. I like her fast pace story and how she made the plot and less cheesy words all over the books. but this one definitely not my cup of tea. too cheesy, too much pointless drama, and too übertrieben. from all the series I read in this day, this one added more point to "let's make life miserable".

It was good but the story seemed so incomplete. I wanted it all to be finished by the author skipped main parts in my opinion, especially a confrontation or finding out why the twins father had lied and what not. Frustrating!

The main character of Zander was pretty angry all the way up until the end. I thought that his anger wasn't really justified or explained well enough.

I liked this story better than the first. Zander is the twin who was left behind with his father, who knew he had a twin and thought his.mother left with the nicer twin, because his father lied about it
They were 1 for goodness sake. But Zander had to believe that for his own sanity. Somehow he managed to become a big real estate developer in Australia, and knew about his brother Nico, but Nico had just found out about him. It sounds.pretty ridiculous in the Talking, but there was a spring amount of emotion about mother's and sons and daughter's and mothers. So Nico's PA, Charlotte has been talking to Zander on the phone and when she finally.meets him, she realizes they are twins. Surprise. After much angst, there is a really happy ending that made me cry.

Even better than the first book about Nico and Constantine. Lots of angst and drama but I really enjoyed it. I love the ones where the hero is actually seen to be falling in love with the heroine even though he doesn’t really admit to it until much later. I loved the epilogue which finished off the story of both brothers so well. Another satisfying story from Carol Martinelli.

Hard to put down

An enjoyable romance with suspense. I went out of my way to find this book, after reading part one of this story.
My only negative comment is that a bit more detail of the brother's reconciliation would have made this better.

Reading this book is like choking down over-salted food: there might be some good flavor underneath, but what is bad is overwhelming. The girl is a twit, the guy is an ass, the sex scenes are lackluster, there's no believable tenderness, and the prose just seems to ramble. It's not edited to help visually identify when the scene is changing. I didn't find a single character to like in the book. There were jars and baskets into which various misfortunes and proscribe character traits were jammed, but not three-dimensional, believable characters.

Normally I don't care for the one-night stand type of books but this one had a good twist. Every plan the H made blew up in his face. He started off as a typical alpha male but he couldn't get control over the h or his brother. All revenge plots blew up in his face immediately. I love that these parts did not drag on. I was going to give this a 3 star rating then I elevated it to 4 stars but I think it is ultimately a 5 star book. I will reread this one often. If you like romance in any form then give this one a try. It is quite unique.
