Bought this book because I am a Master Gardener and I love spreading the joy of growing plants with kids! I am a Mom of 5 Grandma of 3.
I really like this book, it is broken down by month which is cool if you are new and don't know what to plant in which season. It has recipes which I haven't but am excited to try.
It has craft ideas and this was my reason for the loss of a star, the directions don't seem 100% clear and there are items that I am not sure where you would find them...there is a shopping guide in the back but it doesn't say, "you can purchase wind chime tubes at..."
I have several things I want to try already with my grandsons!

If you enjoy spending time outside, gardening, plants, or any variation of the previous and are looking for ways to include your young kids in that hobby, this book is fantastic. Broken down by month, it provides several activities that are generally weather appropriate, including which plants you can plant during that time of the year. I would actually love to own this book.

Recommended for parents with kids ages 1.5 years to 6.

I took this book out from the library, because my parents, hubby & I, have planted a vegetable garden for the first time, other than the odd tomato plant. I've been devouring the 'net for ideas, hints, tips, tricks, recipes, etc etc, along with stalking coworkers for any advice they can give us - and our garden is doing just great! I can't wait for a bigger & better garden next year!

so, with all that in mind, I've been requesting books from the library on the subject of vegetable gardening, & I took this one out. It actually wasn't what I really expected, as it's geared more towards kids & families, but as such, it's written for beginners in mind. The book has 12 chapters, one for each month, & there are 3 catagories in each one - how to plant something, a craft activity, & a related recipe. The problem is, the craft activities aren't really related to the month, & the recipes aren't really related to that month's planting - for example, lemon cupcakes in February. I'm sure lemons are in season in parts of the US (Florida? Southern Cali?) but not in the majority of the States, I would think. The recipes do look all delicious, which for me balances out the fact that they don't fit with the months. I found most of the craft projects rather bland & boring - I can't see kids being interested in making plant markers out of rocks or decorating a shoebox to put gardening supplies in.

But all of the above is balanced with the fact that the book has great, small garden plans & very creative ideas, like a forth of July patriotic garden display, & does have some great hints & tips for beginner gardeners, & I think the fact that the book is geared towards families is a very nice idea.

4.5 stars - This is a wonderful resource for families who are looking to garden together. Even if parents are unsure about their green thumb qualifications and whether they have the space necessary to make it work, never fear. Tornio offers great ideas for small and large spaces, including growing flowers and vegetables indoors, and rates projects by level of difficulty. Divided up by month, Tornio outlines growing opportunities, as well as craft and recipe projects highlighting nature that shines during this time. Be aware, though, that plants listed in the grow section by month don't necessarily mean these are ones that should be planted during this time. While a few can be, the majority of them are for spring planting season. Tornio doesn't include a planting zone map either, which would be useful since she uses plant zone numbers throughout the "Grow It" sections. Despite this flaw, families will certainly enjoy Tornio's creative ideas for combining gardening and fun. Highly recommended.

Tornio has compiled a nice little book of garden based projects. I think it's a great book for people who are already familiar with the basics of gardening and want creative ideas for crafts, plus simple recipes that kids can help with. If you are a beginning green thumb, I would suggest finding a book to describe exactly how to plant/hardiness zones, etc. My one complaint about the book is that Tornio does not include a hardiness map, but lists all the zones with the plants (which I suppose is better than vice versa!) Treat this book as the creative icing on the cake, and not a how-to, and you won't be disappointed!

Gardening, crafts, and recipes all year long for the whole family! The chapters are divided by month. They plants in each month do not neccesarily grow in that month, but it offers a varity to enjoy - herbs, bulbs, animals, night, etc. The crafs are focused around recycled ideas with garden decor in mind. Great book for families who want to explore gardening.

I love the combination of plant information, garden crafts, and recipe ideas. This book offers many practical tips for avoiding common beginner's mistakes in a home garden. My favorite features were the themed garden ideas, especially the concept of a salsa garden that has tomatoes, onions, peppers, etc. I checked this out from the library but am considering purchasing a copy of my own.

skimming through this one to see if it's worth recommending. so far I'm digging it for all the child oriented gardening and craft projects. seems like it would keep kids busy, outdoors, and active in the summer months.
