There's a wide variety of situations and emotions described in these fascinating stories, written between 1978 and 1995, and you might be surprised how little role religion plays in them, considering that the period was dominated by the establishment of an Islamic government during this period. As it turns out, it was also ironically a period during which women writers and film-makers became far more prominent than before. If you are interested in the short story as a form, or in modern Iran, or in women in the Middle East, this will be worth reading.
