《世界文学百年经典：红与黑》如司汤达标榜的是部“纪事”作品，但并不妨碍象征的运用。小说开初就叫《于连》，到上部写毕，才定名为《世界文学百年经典：红与黑》。以两种色彩词作书名，当有寓意存焉。历来书评家绞尽脑汁，颇多发明，认为“红”与“黑”，喻军装与道袍，剑与十字架，热血与孝服，军人的荣耀与僧侣的暗黑，火红的理想与黯然的幻灭，英勇时世与复辟年代，等等，甚至比附于赌盘上的红黑两色，喻人的命运变幻莫测。真可谓挖空心思。
