If you asked him, Cole Watkins would tell you that his life was probably as close to perfect as it could get. He owned his own company, and it was doing very well. He had a great family, good friends, and a house on the beach. What more could a man want? I've read this book five or six times, but have only rated it (I've since become more active on GR, and now review everything, so this one is getting a much-deserved review).
Title: Hiding From Yesterday
Author: Raeann Blake
Tone: Hopeful, feel-good, steamy
Heat: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️
Violence Level: Off-page domestic violence later in the book (not the MMC, but against the MFC by a character who has a small part until those chapters)
MMC: Cole
MFC: Jillian
SMC: Gavin
SFC: Ronni
Intended Audience: This book is for those who like on-page explicit scenes and books with detail. Raeann’s writing style is descriptive and straightforward. Her books do have some humor in them, but not enough to really cross over into romcom. In Hiding From Yesterday, most of the humor is between the MMC and his best friend, who works for the MFC.
This book is written clearly and is easy to read. The pacing is fast and will keep you engaged, even in the slower sections (which really aren’t all that slow). It’s written as a single POV in third person. The chapters are longer, and there are no cliffhangers, which works well for Raeann’s style of writing.
The characters’ voices stay true to themselves, and the dialogue is excellent. The author sneaks character description in, so you barely know you are reading it, which makes them very vivid. They are also complex characters and very relatable, making it easy to root for them. By the time you reach the end, you’ll want more.
The growth of the MMC and MFC, along with the growth of the SMC and SFC, is even throughout the book. All four of them have excellent chemistry together, including conflict between Cole and Gavin, Cole and Jillian, Ronni and Gavin and Ronni and Wade.
Jillian and Ronni have jobs that are generally male-oriented—Jillian is the owner of a software company, and Ronni is the owner of a software development company.
The book does deal with grief to a certain extent (what romance doesn’t have some grief in it?). The overall atmosphere of Hiding From Yesterday is cozy, soothed, and of course, turned on. The characters and their personalities make this story, and there’s enough tension, banter and spice (though it is more of a slow burn) to keep you highly engaged and interested. For me, the book didn’t have any weak spots. Raeann is one of my favorite authors. I have read every one of her books at least four times—most of them countless times. This is great for readers who don’t like their romances to be too sappy and like on-page steam (though some of her other books have more steam than this one).
I highly recommend this book and would (and have) read more from Raeann.
