In For the Care of Souls, Sean McGever reminds ministers that announcing—and reannouncing—the good news of Jesus is central to pastoral care. The gospel rightly belongs at the start of a Christian's life, but its role does not end there. It is the balm and cure of our hearts for all of life. We must all be evangelized and re-evangelized.
Avoiding a simplistic, manipulative, or guilt-inducing message, Evangelismpresents a vision and strategy for ministers to evangelize in a way that is refreshing, biblical, and sustainable.
Sean McGever (PhD, University of Aberdeen) is an Area Director for Young Life in Phoenix, Arizona, and an adjunct faculty at Grand Canyon University. He speaks, teaches, and ministers across the United States, Canada, and the UK.
I am a pastor in large part because of a door-to-door evangelism program that I was involved in as a teen. As a pastor, I have maintained a door-to-door evangelism program that mimics the program from my youth. I train and lead teams to go out door-to-door for 90 minutes, once a month, during the academic year.
In summary, I LOVE evangelism, and a greatly DISLIKE much of what purports to be evangelism.
McGever's book is wonderful. He highlights the problems with the "assumptions" that undergird much evangelistic conversation. His critiques are on point without being haughty or rude.
This book is not a "how to" evangelism book. It's a "don't forget" evangelism book. Don't forget that God is in charge. Don't forget that you're only a messenger. Don't forget the message. Don't forget to listen. Don't forget to be humble. Don't forget it's not about you.
This book avoids the common problem of false dichotomies (e.g., this type of evangelism is better than this time of evangelism). I like door-to-door evangelism and I think it's received undue maligning over the years. Much of the dislike for the door-to-door evangelism is that it often "forgets" those things which McGever tells you not to forget. I'm confident that my door-to-door program remembers these things, and thus is conducted with realistic expectations and joyful confidence in the grace of God. I also recognize this is just one of MANY ways to share the gospel of Jesus.
My own evangelism philosophy is simple. 2 Cor 9:6 (Sow bountifully) and Mark 4:26–29 (the only part of the kingdom of God that we can "control" is the sowing). This leads back to the promise of God in 2 Cor 9:6.
