Blade and Bone #5

The Song of Stone

Rate this book
The Alainsith claim the memories of the past are stored in the Song. Others use the Song for power. Finn and Morgan have reached the capital only to find it abandoned. People have evacuated, but Finn needs to know if the king is among them. Honaaz and Lily prepare for an attack, though they may already be too late. The Alainsith are moving, and the defenses are woefully outnumbered. If they can’t hold them back, Reyand—and all they care about—will be overwhelmed. When Kanar learns the truth about his sword, the Blackheart must become something more. He must become a true Blade Bearer. Jal wants to help him, but he must understand why the song has changed before he can, as it may be the key to saving them all.

Blade & Bone just gets better

Sharing a setting with The Executioner’s Song, The Blade and Bone series is a deftly paced ensemble saga. While not quite a sequel the events and characters of Blade and Bone continue to intertwine with the history and characters of the earlier series. As they are separated both by choice and necessity Kanar, Jal, Lilly, Honaaz, Finn and Morgan began to understand the magnitude of the forces converging upon them and the history driving the conflict as well as the abilities each might be able to master to allow them to survive. (Finn remains one of my favorite characters - as an executioner who is more than a minor villain, Holmberg has given us a worthy successor to Severian. Although the Solar Cycle had a very different setting I think Gene Wolfe would have approved.) The author’s ability to skip between the various threads of the story at just the right intervals holds your interest in each and keeps you engaged to the end. It seems like this series may be setting the stage for another which will take you even further into the exciting and intricate balance of forces in this world.

Overall series rating so far:
LOVED IT!

Getting close to the last book. I'll miss this series when it'll be over and I'll definitely look for more from this author.

It is a fun, complex, well-written series.

The character growth is amazing, I always adore that in books. The change in them was so subtle but so obvious at the same time, it's great to look back from where they started and where they are now. Let's see how they end up.

I must apologize to the author as this is my first review of these excellent books

An outstanding group of very strong characters with a mystery of dark witchcraft to solve and to combat kept me reading one book after the other. The story was fast paced and I look forward to reading the next book

Another Great Addition To An Epic Tale

Another great story line and build up to what should be an epic conclusion to this tale. Enjoyed learning the back story or Jal.

Blade and Bone (book 5) The Song of Stone

Again, this series never ceases to amaze me. More action, comedy, and serious thriller. Better than watching tv! Will make a great movie.
