Mr Jonathon Fordham, the most eligible bachelor in Sydney and heir to a noble title in England, treats matters of the heart like a game. Living in the newly forged Australian Colony in 1844, Jack Fordham buries his past beneath an indifferent facade. In spite of his rakish reputation, Jack’s dashing smile and suave flattery would melt any woman’s heart. Any that is, it seems, except for Miss Margaret Wingrove.
The beautiful governess is strangely unmoved by the nonpareil’s many attractions, nor his beguiling charm. When Meg does not fall into his arms as he presumes she will, his game of pursuit begins in earnest.
As Meg continues to resist his advances, Jack’s determination to win her intensifies. But can he risk exposing his true heart to find the love he desires before his game unravels? And can he embrace, or will he simply deny the obstacle which stands between them…her faith?

I read The Game in less than a day. I couldn’t put it down!!
Viscount Fordham banishes his son Jonathon from the family estate after being involved in an unfortunate affair. Jack is more sinned against than sinner but his father refuses to listen and Jack begins his new life in Australia.
Once here he decides that if he has the name he may as well have the game. A wealthy landowner and business man, Jack is also a good looking and debonair bachelor. There is no shortage of would-be suitors. But his heart belongs to no one. Life is a game and he knows how to play it - or he thinks he does. That is, until he meets Meg Wingrove.
I’m not telling any more but to say: read the book. I have no hesitation in recommending The Game as light-hearted reading but be prepared for surprises. There is a strong Christian theme.
I liked this book because of the struggle between the hero and heroine. He's an arrogant but likeable rogue whose feelings change halfway through. He has actually fallen for his mark. But she isn't having any when she discovers what he's been about.
Amanda Deed is an Australian author, new to this reader. The fourth Australian author in my Around the World in 50 (minus 1) Book challenge. The Game takes place in the new Australian Colony in 1844. Mr Jonathon Fordham, the most eligible bachelor in Sydney and heir to a noble title in England, treats matters of the heart like A GAME. When the beautiful governess Meg does not fall into his arms as he presumes she will, his GAME of pursuit begins in earnest. This historical romance portrays the history and culture of 1840 Australia. A page turning read.
The Game transports us back to Colonial times in Sydney. Jack Fordham has been sent to Australia from England under a bit of a cloud. Never one to let others’ opinions bother him, Jack continues to live a life of parties and womanising. Meg Wingrove, governess to Jack’s nieces and nephews, seems impervious to Jack’s attention. But as a friendship develops between the pair, Meg begins to see behind the façade, and Jack is forced to admit his feelings for Meg are more than just a game. A beautifully told historical tale, full of faith and characters you’ll love spending time with.
This book got off to a bit of a slow start. I really didn't like the male MC at all! As I got into the book though I realized I wasn't supposed to like him. I don't want to write any spoilers, but by the end my opinion of him had changed. There is romance, mystery and a few laughs along the way. The children are delightful. The faith element is well written and at the heart of the story. Overall this was a solid 4 star read for me.
I enjoyed reading this book! It has so many surprises that are unexpected! The imagery brought the coast of Australia to life!
The characters are relatable and easy to like! Meg stands firm in her faith despite the fact that her heart might break. Jack is a rouge, but he does change toward the end!
I truly appreciated all of the scripture and references to God in the book! It encouraged me to share my faith with others!
I really enjoyed this story with its twists and turns. A few surprises along the way. It was nice to read a book based on my side of the world, with places I’ve visited. We take for granted the speed of travel now days between Sydney and Parramatta. It was nice to get a glimpse into the past and think about when travel was slower. There was a strong faith message woven through and that was rather refreshing.
I loved this book. Meg has such high standards for herself and for the men that she courts and I just loved that about her. Jack is a rake, yes, but you also just can't wish and hope that he changes his ways, because he is rather likeable.
I wasn't sure I would like the ending, but I actually did, as it showed Jack having to take responsibility for his actions.
I'll definitely be reading more books by the author! Pick this one up, for I'm sure you will love it. 🥰
A very interesting and inspiring read. The characters were very well-written, and I enjoyed the story by this new-to-me author. Would definitely recommend it.
