Mike Mignola was born September 16, 1960 in Berkeley, California and grew up in nearby Oakland. His fascination with ghosts and monsters began at an early age (he doesn't remember why) and reading Dracula at age 13 introduced him to Victorian literature and folklore from which he has never recovered.

In 1982, hoping to find a way to draw monsters for a living, he moved to New York City and began working for Marvel Comics, first as a (very terrible) inker and then as an artist on comics like Rocket Raccoon, Alpha Flight and The Hulk. By the late 80s he had begun to develop his signature style (thin lines, clunky shapes and lots of black) and moved onto higher profile commercial projects like Cosmic Odyssey (1988) and Gotham by Gaslight (1989) for DC Comics, and the not-so-commercial Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser (1990) for Marvel. In 1992, he drew the comic book adaptation of the film Bram Stoker's Dracula for Topps Comics.

In 1993, Mike moved to Dark Horse comics and created Hellboy, a half-demon occult detective who may or may not be the Beast of the Apocalypse. While the first story line (Seed of Destruction, 1994) was co-written by John Byrne, Mike has continued writing the series himself. There are, at this moment, 13 Hellboy graphic novel collections (with more on the way), several spin-off titles (B.P.R.D., Lobster Johnson, Abe Sapien and Witchfinder), three anthologies of prose stories, several novels, two animated films and two live-action films staring Ron Perlman. Hellboy has earned numerous comic industry awards and is published in a great many countries.

Mike also created the award-winning comic book The Amazing Screw-on Head and has co-written two novels (Baltimore, or, the Steadfast Tin Soldier and the Vampire and Joe Golem and the Drowning City) with best-selling author Christopher Golden.

Mike worked (very briefly) with Francis Ford Coppola on his film Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992), was a production designer on the Disney film Atlantis: The Lost Empire (2001) and was visual consultant to director Guillermo del Toro on Blade II (2002), Hellboy (2004) and Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008). He lives somewhere in Southern California with his wife, daughter, a lot of books and a cat.

It's been quite some time (at least 20 years) since I read her introduction in the illustrated novel Hellboy: The Lost Army, but it was excellent to have Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden fill in the love story of Anastasia Bransfield and Hellboy all these years later. I've been reading much more of the Hellboy Universe in the past couple years and have really been enjoying it and this volume was no exception. As Mignola and Golden's script is great at developing the characters and story across the five issues and Matt Smith's art continues to be top notch at existing perfectly alongside Mignola's without completely aping him. I do hope that we get more stories as the ending felt a little abrupt.

Special Thanks to Dark Horse Comics and Edelweiss Plus for the digital ARC. This was given to me for an honest review.

A pretty good "historical" Hellboy comic. In the vein of the Hellboy and the BPRD books. This one centres around a relationship he strikes up with archaeologist Anastasia Bransfield. I kind of prefer my Hellboy as a bachelor but it was nice to explore the romantic side of his character. Certainly just for fans only, but it was a good time.

I just think it’s funny that after the very bad 2019 Hellboy movie, which had David Harbour saying things in interviews like “Hellboy can’t love,” Mignola follows it up with a set of stories that could’ve been titled “Well, Actually…” Anyway, this is cute and the big guy punches goblins, what more do you want?

That was a fun read. Hellboy gets the chance to Indiana Jones for a few issues. He even gets the girl or does he??? With the right author those goblins would make great stars of their own comic.

Had great pacing and action, liked the exotic locations and myths.
The last issue was too short and had an open ending which let me wanting more. I wouldn’t say no to another album.
Goblin Night was my favorite though, even if the Shadow Theatre had a nice story, the first arc was packed with more humor. It was nice to see HB and Anastasia’s relationship develop a bit.
The art was great , i loved how Matt Smith can draw the HB comics and still make it feel like a coherent style , pretty close to Mignola’s original take.
Lastly, the writing was very good, like I said , I love the humorous bits.

Hellboy, znany z brutalnych i złożonych przygód, pokazuje swoje bardziej ludzkie oblicze, a Anastasia Bransfield, nowa postać w uniwersum Hellboya, wprowadza świeżość i nową dynamikę.

„Hellboy in Love” to udana kombinacja romantycznej przygody i klasycznego Hellboya.

It's 1979 and Hellboy is in England acting as security for an archeologist about to get an artifact on a train. A bunch of goblins who also want the artifact have snuck onto the train, so Hellboy's services are needed. The archeologist is Anastasia Bransfield. She's young and cute (wears a Yankees baseball cap even though she's British). Hellboy is smitten with her. She likes a life of adventure, so hanging out with Hellboy is fun. She is smitten too. Rather than return to B.P.R.D. headquarters, Hellboy takes some leave to help Anastasia in her investigations into ancient mystical folklore which of course turns out to be true.

The adventures are fun with the usual interesting magical mythology. The second story, where they go to Turkey and have to fight supernatural puppets, is especially inventive and fun. The art has the typical Hellboy style which I enjoy very much. The romance is not particularly convincing but I went with it just like with the magic and mythology.

Recommended for Hellboy fans.

4 stars. This was both a fun collection of stories and a really cute romance for Hellboy. It definitely left me in a good mood.

However, for me, it loses a star both because Anastasia came on so hard in the beginning that after two pages, she was really starting to annoy me, and also for the final story ending so abruptly. Certainly there are more volumes coming, so I'm sure that was partially a set-up to get us to care about buying the next volume (which I would have done anyway!).

I also would have preferred Hellboy's insecurity - which he got cut off when asking Dr. Bransfield an honest question about - had come back around and been addressed. I'd like to hear her answer. Hopefully this gets covered in a future issue.

For those of you who find it unrealistic Hellboy could land such an awesome, yet normal, human woman... you don't know much about women. He'd be beating them off with a stick if he existed in the real world.

Great art, fun stories, all in all, a fast and enjoyable read on a Saturday afternoon!

One of the best Hellboyverse stories I’ve read in years. The artwork is sharp, distinct, and has its own style, yet still fits perfectly alongside Mignola’s work. The writing is witty and fun, staying within the tone that makes Hellboy what it is. The shadowplay puppet scene alone is worth the price of admission - a moment of abstract slapstick inside the dark theatre. And the running joke about Hellboy being “flustered”? Absolute gold.

Anastasia is a standout – written so well you can’t help but like her instantly, and with every page, you start to fall for her just like Big Red does. Clever, warm, irreverent in precisely the right ways, she belongs in this world as though she had always been there. If there is justice in the spheres, we will see the pair together again, trading banter, being cute and saving each other from whatever impossible hells lie ahead.

P.S. Have you ever seen a pack of goblins at a punk rock show in England in 1979? You know you want to, and now you can.

"Hellboy in Love" introduces something new to the series, which is tough to do at this juncture. Namely, as the title promises, it offers a romance between Hellboy and a firecracker young archaeologist.

The relationship strains credulity somewhat, as Hellboy is, you know, a big monster with shaved-down horns and the right hand of doom. But his girlfriend, Anastasia, is sharp and hedonistic; she's drawn to the unconventional, and so the pairing largely works.

They have a "meet cute" with some goblins stealing items she's been researching. They stick together after that, traveling the world looking for evidence of a prehistoric psychic occult society. This inspires some standard Hellboy adventures, local flavor drawn from global myths, and it's generally fun.

I don't love how the indigenous workers in each spot become fodder to establish the baddies' bona fides. But the writing is strong, establishing the relationship as more than just a one-off, and the art is excellent throughout.

"Hellboy in Love" is a new miniseries co-written by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden. Similar to what happened in "Hellboy in Mexico", the story takes place in 1979 during a previously unexplored gap in the titular character's adventures.

As the title implies, Hellboy has met a new love interest in the form of Anastasia Bransfield, first introduced in the novel "The Lost Army". She's a plucky archeologist of the British Museum with a penchant for getting in trouble that starts flirting and eventually falls in love with the big guy.

This volume collects three stories in the same arc. I found them interesting and of above-average quality, with good writing and a gripping, action-oriented narrative with compelling antagonists – I particularly enjoyed the shadow puppets. The artwork is just ok, with colors that look darker than usual. Unfortunately I'm not fully sold on the idea of Anastasia being a romantic partner for Hellboy, the love scenes felt awkward and cringey.

There's room for more sequels as the main plot line, revolving around the fictional Suaren Artea organization, is left in a cliffhanger. I'm looking forward to further entries in this series; it's a breath of fresh air for a beloved comic.

This volume sets things a little bit on its ear, because I'll assume many Hellboy readers have always shipped Hellboy and Liz Sherman. What many forget, as newer published Hellboy stories jump around during various periods of his tenure with the BRPD, is that he had a life before Laz.

Part of that life included archaeologist Anastaisa Bransfield. Was Hellboy in love with Anastasia? Well, I'm going to leave that to the individual reader's opinion, but the two were at least a little in lust with each other.

No, its not graphic, it's pretty much inferred in comments made between the two as Anastasia calls in Hellboy for help with his various paranormal + archaeological excursions.

This has enough of the DNA from my favourite sort of Hellboy stories to be up my street, but it doesn't hit peak Hellboy for me.

The first part has the most baffling UK geography (from the north of England, to High Wycombe, to the 'nearby' Cotswolds, where you can apparently find Coventry) but the goblins are fun characters.

The shadow puppets in the second story are a fun antagonist and there's some fun with the art too.

The third story is the shortest and closest to an old school pulpy Hellboy issue, it also does enough to make me care about the overall story arc and keen to find out how things resolve with Olivia.

Granted, a giant red man with a weapon for an arm, a tail, yellow eyes, shaved down horns, and (worst of all) seriously questionable hairstyle may not be everyone’s type. But this guy still gets a lady now and again. And Anastasia is perfect for him. They share the passion for adventures, traveling, and danger. And so, across the globe they go in pursuit of rare, occult-themed treasures, with romance along the way.
A classic for fans and a really fun read for everyone. Recommended.

Back in 1979, Hellboy met and fell for for an archaeologist, Anastasia Brumfield. This details their adventures as their relationship develops. She's on the hunt for evidence of some ancient secret society. This was written with Christopher Golden and while I do like his prose, he's often too long-winded for comics.

This was a pretty interesting romp. Three short stories, all featuring Hellboy and Dr. Anastasia Bransfield looking for evidence of the Suaren Artea around the world. Also, they’re dating. I hope to see more of this because Anastasia is a pretty great character (why is an English archaeologist wearing a Yankees cap?) that I want to know more about.
