A life-time memoir building on Bryan Cook's vignette-style of haibun, first recognized by the judges of the Genjuan International when awarding him first prize in 2019. Journey with him internationally from his upbringing in Egypt, England and France to Canada and many countries for his job and vacations. Relish his many escapades and reflections told straightforwardly and elegantly, with humor and compassion in both the prose and the haiku/senryu.
This varied and adventurous collection of haibun is excellent, my star rating doesn't lie. From work life to retirement life, from holiday to holiday disaster, it will keep you enthralled. You will relate to the emotion, the humour, the sense of family, because in this writing there is an easy and deep sense of collective consciousness that brings us together as humans, workers, lovers and rascals.
There are so many wondrous phrases and poetic snippets to discover, savor and make not of. His range is incredibly broad from an ode to the venerable Brown Betty to questioning the need for Van Gogh Immersion. My introduction to Haibun has left me seeking more of this tantalizing combo of poetry/prose. Well done!
