Ugh, this is the worst. I felt heartbroken about Sakuragi's admission of defeat, but at the same time, I wanted to cheer hard for Mitsui's basketball skills.
Slam Dunk volume 18 is once again a very enjoyable fast read, with all the "protagonist gets devastated first with overwhelming odds" tropes that can be seen in a lot of material. Nonetheless, it is in narrative execution that makes Slam Dunk good, as Inoue exactly knows how to time serious moments and funny Sakuragi theatrics.
Slam Dunk, Vol. 18 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (153–161) of the on-going manga series.
The tankōbon continues the game of Shohoku High School and Ryonan High School. Shohoku widens their lead, but Kicchou Fukuda and Jun Uozumi start scoring, with the former confronting and defeating Hanamichi Sakuragi several times. Additionally, Takenori Akagi becomes very nervous about the development of the match and makes various mistakes.
As Sakuragi head-butts him, Akagi recovers by head-butting back. Both Sakuragi and Akagi try to make slam dunks, but they fail, with Sakuragi's gang trying to restrain him when he loses his control. When Sakuragi calms down, Shohoku starts attacking and managed to get an advantage of over ten points.
Fukuda then starts playing as Ryonan's attack focus, easily taking back the advantage for his team by making it past Sakuragi's defense. While trying to stop one of Fukuda's attacks, Sakuragi is injured, as his forehead starts bleeding. Sakuragi is replaced by Kiminobu Kogure, but Hisashi Mitsui manages to reduce their disadvantage.
This tankōbon is written and illustrated by Takehiko Inoue. For the most part, the game between Shohoku High School and Ryonan High School was narrated and depicted rather well. It is a suspenseful and flowed rather well with enough drama to keep the story flowing. Hopefully, it would be determined soon if Shohoku High School would go forward to Nationals or not.
All in all, Slam Dunk, Vol. 18 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.
*This review is for the series as a whole with 4.5 out of 5 stars*
I’ve posted 2 articles about Slam Dunk early this year so I’m sure you guys already have an idea how I adore this series. The anime series was incredible but its manga counterpart is beyond incredible, it was AHA-mazing!
I’m not a sporty kind of girl and I don’t think I’ll be anytime soon, but I think what’s great about reading books and watching shows is that you learn and (kind of) experience a lot of things you don’t normally do in real life. And because of Slam Dunk, I learn to appreciate sports stories and eventually love them.
When I started reading this manga, it felt so nostalgic. It’s not so different in the anime so while reading it, I keep on picturing out all those episodes which I think made my reading experience even more enjoyable.
Slam Dunk showcases a great team work. What I learn to appreciate about sports stories/shows is that it’ll give you a lot of lessons about what it means to be a great sportsman. And Slam Dunk absolutely slammed dunk that part!
I usually watch the anime series first before reading its manga counterpart and as for Slam Dunk, I’ve watched it quite a number of times already and I don’t think I’ll ever stop watching it, *wink. Even after watching the anime, I can still feel the tension, the suspense, and the excitement while reading this manga.
As you can read on its title, this manga centered around the sports basketball and through it weaved a really good story everyone of us will enjoy and appreciate whether you’re into sports or not. Another thing I love about reading manga is that it will never ceased to make you laugh with its funny scenes and Slam Dunk had it big time! I lost count how many times I laughed my heart out reading this masterpiece.
The drawings were really so good too plus those facial expressions were epic, especially Sakuragi’s, haha.
This story has a main character but I love that it didn’t just center around him but the author also gave its other characters a chance to share their own story. I love the character development as well especially Sakuragi’s.
And speaking of Sakuragi, I didn’t eventually like him at first. He’s definitely trouble and I didn’t quite appreciate his annoying antics and his excessive bragging. But all throughout the story, you can’t definitely help it but like his character. As I’ve said above, Sakuragi’s character development is definitely one you should see. From being this good for nothing delinquent, he became a true sportsman. I just absolutely love his improvement not just in basketball but eventually as a person. It’s definitely hard for me to explain but I just LOVE Sakuragi. Ofcourse he can still be an airhead sometimes but I can see now that it’s one of the things that makes him quite likeable, haha.
Slam Dunk has some pretty amazing group of characters and as I’ve said in this article, they come in varieties so I’m sure a lot of readers can find some characters they can relate and love.
The anime series left off the national championship and let me tell you guys, it was already good as it is. It was full of intense scenes with a right blend of humor but the national championship parts were sooooooo good I can still feel its intensity even after finishing this manga. Actually, I cried pretty hard when they won! You should definitely read it!!!
Although the ending felt short which ofcourse makes you want to ask for more, I guess it was still a pretty good and hopeful ending, not just for team Shohoku but for the other teams as well. Besides, after that intense match with Sannoh, I don’t think Slam Dunk failed me.
So if you’re looking for an intense sports shonen manga to read, Slam Dunk should be on top of your list.
As expected, our protagonists with Shohoku are facing some difficulty to start off their Ryonan game. Sakuragi is matched up against Fukuda and having inexperience exploited, while Akagi is still recovering from the Kainan game and having difficulty trying to keep up with Uozumi. There's not much to say, it's great watching the two teams go at each other and while the beginning deficit is unfortunate it's also to be expected. Everyone goes into this seeing Shohoku as the scrappy underdog, and this all sets up how they're going to claw their way back up. Sakuragi, Akagi, and Fukuda are the stars and get all the spotlight- the Fukuda/Sakuragi match-up is a joy to watch develop as their personalities and egos clash.
Oh! That hurt for Sakuragi! I feel bad for the guy. I am glad that I had the next volume, due to that cliff hanger.
Series Opinion Update What attracts me to a series is awesome characters, great group dynamics, and great lines. When I am reading this series I get sucked into it and I devour it, but there are not too many lines that are memorable, at least for me. I mean there is "Gorilla Dunk!," but I am not sure if there is anything else. I do have a favorite character (Mitsui). I want to say I understand why this is beloved, but I am not seeing it yet. Maybe by volume 20 or 21, I will get it. I mean it did take me a few volumes to understand why Naruto was beloved. Maybe the same will happen here?
I love the fact that this volumes are fast reads. It's very easy to devour them and still you get a lot of enjoyment from them.
There's been a lot involving this game so far, a lot of struggles going through the characters heads, a lot is at stake and you can feel it. Takehiko Inoue has the ability to make you care about, not ony for the main characters, but for the seconday characters too.
I didn't "love" this volume but it was perfect in itself. This match is beyond basketball, there's gonna be a lot of personal growth for the characters because this is a pivotal moment in their lives and you can feel it already.
The match winning over Akagi quickly spread throughout the school, and Sakuragi himself called himself a "Phantom basketball man" and joined the club with overconfidence.
However, what was waiting for him after joining the club was the days of basic practice such as dribbling in the corner of the gymnasium.
In addition, Rukawa Kaede, who joined the club in the same year, is said to be a "super rookie", and since he is also Haruko's unrequited love
, Sakuragi burns an extraordinary rivalry to him.
Miyagi, a second-year member of the basketball club, came to school.
Miyagi was spotted by a bad group for three years and was hospitalized for a violent incident.
This volume brings the readers to the final game in the Regionals: a matchup between the two rivals Shohoku and Ryonan. This matchup was featured early on in the series during a pre-season scrimmage, which was a brilliant piece of storytelling. I wonder how much pre-plotting Takehiko Inoue did to create such a good sequence.
In Volume 18, the focus shifts to Shohoku's captain Akagi, who is still battling his ankle injury, despite resting it in the last gimme game versus the weakest team in the bracket. But the rest of one day was not long enough to heal. Even worse than the physical injury is the mental defeatist self-talk by Akagi when he gets knocked over by Ryonan's monster center.
Once again, loved this book. The growth in Sakugari's basketball skills surprised me a lot. In this book, he was completely different to how he was at the start of the novel. Although he still has the same attitude, thinking he's the best on the team, he has become much better at basketball. In the 18th book of the series, Shohoku is playing a very important game against Ryonan. Whoever wins goes to the Nationals. However, with Akagi not playing at his very best, Shohoku going to the nationals seems very unlikely. The book ends with a strategy, Sakugari bleeding after a great fall...
Shohoku begin their last match against Ryonan. Akagi still suffers from his injury during the game before and Sakuragi is overwhelmed by Fukuda's playing finesse. It seems that Shohoku may loose, but with Sakuragis help they may be able to turn the game around.
One of the more iconic of sports manga. It's the first series where I actually both read the manga and watched the anime. It has flawed protagonists, growing up pains, colourful characters, and beautiful meaningful relationships, all neatly wrapped around the context of college basketball.
Shohoku begin their last match against Ryonan. Akagi still suffers from his injury during the game before and Sakuragi is overwhelmed by Fukuda's playing finesse. It seems that Shohoku may loose, but with Sakuragis help they may be able to turn the game around.
Fukuda utterly thrashes Sakuragi-kun. It is one of his most humiliating defeats in his life. Akagi finds his footing back. Sakuragi-kun, I believe in you, show them your power. _/\_
Sakuragi me rompió el corazón, me agrada cuando lo muestran más serio en ocasiones, pero tampoco abusan de ello, lo usan en el momento preciso y realmente logra que me salgan unas lágrimas.
