In a Lover's Silence

Rate this book
Alaskan bill-collector Wynne Smith has a problem. Actually, she has two. The first is sexy, six-foot, Deputy US Marshal, Seth Vassar, fresh off the plane from Dallas, Texas and looking for answers to a five-year-old murder investigation. The by-the-book marshal doesn't take no for an answer any more than Wynne likes to let a puzzle go unsolved.

Which leads to her second problem. A serial killer intent on making Wynne pay for destroying his next work of art. Now Wynne has to guard her heart against a man she knows is going to leave her while she tries to keep one step ahead of a maniac. In a game this deadly, her only hope lies In A Lover's Silence.

Ebook freebie by a new-to-me-author, Qwilla Rain. Very well-balanced blend of steamy romance and edgy suspense -- just like I like it! A dark and demented villain topped the charts. A strong-willed and maybe sometimes a little too TSTL heroine and a hero U.S. Marshal that was strong and hot kept me on the edge of my seat. Really enjoyed the total package. Will definitely be watching for other books by this author. Recommend without reservation to romantic suspense lovers!

This was a fast paced RS. Easy to get into and a smooth writing style. This was an easy read that kept my attention. The creepier the killer the better. I really liked the dominating US Marshal Vassar and the know it all Wynne who used to be a bill collector. These two are so steamy together.

An interesting story with a typical but likable hero, a sometimes irritating heroine but equally likable in the end and a good suspense. Now from a writing point it may not be the best that i have read but i quite enjoyed it. There were a few moments that didn't make sense to me but in general i didn't have many problems with the story. The heroine, as i said, was a bit irritating at times and made some stupid things but she grew on
me.The story was intriguing and the suspense interesting even thought it had it's flaws but if you like this genre of romance, then i would recommend it.

Something that i would like to mention and probably hasn't much to do with the book but i will write it anyway, because i tend to read the comments on a book ,for those here saying that the virgin status of heroine is absurd and not realistic because she is in her 30s i will say that, from what i know there isn't a specific time for someone to start their sex life. Some start early, others latter and some others much much latter. And of course there are some people who are not so lucky in that area. No need to dismiss their existence as absurd or irrational. Yes, its not the norm in our society nowadays but my 27 and 33 year old virgin female friends are very much real and proof of the contrary. I suspect there are more people like this out there but are ashamed to admit it because they tend to be viewed as weird or failures in life.

If you're you're looking for a romantic suspense with a nice balance of steamy romance, disturbing suspense and cop thriller, then this book is for you.

The Hero was tall, dark, handsome and a US Marshall...so far so good!
The heroine was a little too "Nancy Drew" for me and I honestly wanted to say "seriously?" a few times but I do tend to be harder on the leading ladies.

All in all a good romantic suspense. I think I'm going to check out Q.R's other works!

Instant attraction between main characters. Wynne is stubborn and sticks her nose in the investigation which causes the killer to target her. In the end there is a HEA. It was a good plot and the killer was a wacko. I gave it a lower rating because the heroine was stupid and made some selfish decisions that caused problems. On the other hand, loved the hero. Alpha male, patient and strong.

Being that I live in Anchorage, Alaska, I had to read this book as soon as I saw it was set in my hometown. Qwilla Rain did a phenomenal job in describing Anchorage and the only other city close by, Eagle River. Right down to street names and the mention of our famous bar, Chilkoot Charlie’s, Qwilla gives readers an incredible tour of our splendid city. At times I almost forgot that I was reading a work of fiction and not an actual case taking place in Anchorage.

In a Lover’s Silence, we follow Wynne Smith, a bill collection living in Anchorage. The adventure starts as she is trying to recover a debt, she uncovers a serial killer instead. She does what any upstanding citizen does and contacts the FBI. Enter, Deputy Marshal Seth Vassar.
Seth Vassar has been hunting for this elusive killer for 5 years and will stop at nothing to find him.

From the moment Wynne and Seth meet, they sizzled. The attraction between them was undeniable. But Seth had a job to do, catch a killer. After Wynne hands all the info over to the FBI, they tell her to leave the investigation to them, but Wynne doesn’t work that way, she can’t let it go, and with her analytical mind, she goes over every detail, finding the killers pattern. She believes she know where the killer will strike next. She’s ready to strike out on her own to find the killer. Seth’s protective instincts won’t allow her to place herself in danger, so he ends up helping her.

Wynne is one pig headed women! While she was a strong, feisty, independent, woman who doesn’t know the meaning of the word NO, I did find myself annoyed by her actions and thought process a few times. Her reckless activities set in to motion a series of events that bring the deranged killer to her doorstep, marking herself as his next victim.

This sensual, suspense thriller kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the entire book.

I absolutely LOVED the fact that Qwilla gave her readers a delightful epilog to totally satisfied my need for a great HEA.

Qwillia Rain's "In a Lover's Silence" provides a suspense-filled erotic tale that follows the hunt for a deranged serial killer that brings Deputy U.S. Marshal Seth Vassar to Alaska and into the life of unconventional Wynne Smith. Wynne's penchant for analyzing details allows her to uncover a pattern of behavior in a suspected murderer and her conscience refuses to allow her to succumb to the pressures of her supervisors but instead leads her to contact the local authorities with her findings. Seth is unwillingly attracted to the abruptly unemployed woman who displays a disregard for her own safety as she continues to pursue her investigation but he has a painful link to the investigation that may make it impossible to remain an impartial bystander. Wynne's dogged pursuit of the person whom she feels is a serial killer brings her into conflict with the sexy Texan whose protective instincts are roused by the feisty woman who is determined to follow her own path. The two have an incandescent attraction for one another but each has scars from the past that prevents them from being willing to commit to the relationship, especially since it is inevitable that Seth will return to his job in Texas. Can they reconcile their issues before the murderer claims his next victim? Only if they learn to work together.

A wonderfully sensual thriller that conjures an intriguing Alaskan setting and peoples it with fascinating characters. The sexy Deputy Vassar is nicely contrasted with the FBI agent (Dex Franklin) that he is accompanying and there are plenty of secondary characters who give depth to the tale, particularly the charming April and the alluring Ravin. Wynne is an engaging character who has a particularly sassy mouth no matter what situation she lands in and one cannot help cheering her on even as the investigation closes in on the creepy and chilling maniac who has been wreaking havoc over many states.

Wynne works in a collections office and inadvertently stumbles onto the trail of a serial killer. When the killer realizes that Wynne is the reason his latest piece of "art" was not completed, he sets his sights on her. Seth Vasser is a cop from Texas with a personal vendetta but didn't count of falling for Wynne in the process.

If you are an avid reader of romantic suspense like I am, the story is pretty predictable. Seth is the strong tortured soul and Wynne is the headstrong stubborn heroine. Seriously, this is one thing I'll never get about heroines in romantic suspense novels. They do stupid sh*t they are advised by their protectors not to do, and guess what? That's when they are usually captured. Insert eye roll here. That being said, there was some good dialogue and hot sexy times to make it worth the read.

Good suspense with a quirky heroine and a sexy Deputy US Marshal.

The heroine has a job we all hate. She works for a bill collector agency in Alaska. In one of her latest quest to find a man that owes money that has been turned over to collections she discovers something is fishy about the man's name and tracks it back to Texas. When she makes a phone call she doesnt realize this is going to set off the radar of a Texas US Marshal Seth Vassar who's been looking for killer for 5 years.

After Wynne is interviews by the Marshall and the FBI she doesn't just sit back and lick her wounds after losing her job. No, she decides to keep on investigating (and actually does a better job than the FBI and Marshall's have) and help find the real identity of the killer, not realizing this puts her on the radar of the killer.

The tension between Wynne and Seth is hot from the beginning but Wynne doesnt play the damsel in distress well and certainly gives Seth a run for his money.

Stand alone, triple pov's

A couple of things stood out:

Now I'm a strong woman but even I cringed at how Wynne taunted the killer when he'd trapped her in the room then for some utterly bizarre reason she bit her lip to stop a sound from escaping when he was trying to kill her. Why? For goodness sakes there was a copper standing guard just feet outside the door so why didn't she scream bloody murder? Wouldn't you? I sure would have. Unbelievable. And a virgin at 30 I think it was? Pulleeze.

Still there was much I liked about it too. Vassar was/is your typical hero, tall dark and handsome and with just enough edge to keep you interested but not too over the top. And being in the mind of a killer like Benny, scary and totally insane.

Oh and just love that cover.

Explicit sex scenes.

It's an Ok read. The story has much potential, such as the identity of the suspect, I hope it is more difficult to find who he is or his next target. Or if he is actually someone familiar to the hero or heroine.

The heroine really annoyed me sometimes:
First, she is reluctant to admit her feelings of the hero, fine, since this is cliché in most romances, this is acceptable.
Second is the most annoyed, her ignorance of danger: Seriously? A serial killer threaten to kill you, of course your lover wants to take you away from your house, where the murderer not only already know but drive by. But the heroine insists to stay at her house? She even mads at the hero only because he wants to protect her? Is she an idiot or what?

If you can ignore some of the heroine's annoyed behaviors, it's an OK read.

I love a good suspense book, one that leaves me guessing who did it all the way to the end and this really fit the bill for it. The plot is extremely well balanced even while going from the past to the future it was all seamlessly blended together. The villain is really dark and a serious creeper but the author once again did an amazing job of balancing, just when it would become too much the author would throw in a nice dish of steam. Oh and was this story hot, two alpha characters circling and sniffing each other out. Just as I thought one
would go in for the kill, clothes are being thrown about.

I downloaded this book almost three years ago, and as I started reading it I knew I had read it before. I couldn't remember much, so I kept going. This would have made a really good thriller, as a romance it didn't work for me.

The chapters that focused on the killer had my attention. I wanted to know what was coming next. But whenever the story changed to the Seth/Wynne romance I lost interest. Seth was an ok character, but I didn't understand what he saw in Wynne. A 30 year old virgin? Come on! And Wynne constantly put herself in danger, and by doing that put Seth in danger. I really disliked her.

Unfortunately, finding the killer took a back seat to the romance, so this only gets two stars from me.

This is the second book set in Alaska I've read this year, and as a hot weathered southerner, through and through, I'm dumbfounded at the comfort these characters have in the frozen north. It makes me rethink my assumption that I'd be miserable. Anyhoo ... I really enjoyed the storyline, but wish Wynne wasn't such a hardass when it came to opening herself up to the possibility of love. I understand a little healthy caution and protecting your heart, but she was a little annoying at times (like when she continued to insist that she knew better about safety than the FBI and US Marshalls). Still, a great story, and one I'd suggest for friends.

I loved the characters! Honestly, the suspense was so strong in this story that I was a bit surprised at just how well done these characters were. The chemistry was viable, the description and history made them so real. I truly hated to leave them when the story ended. My only complaint is how stupid Wynne could be but again, I can’t help but actually like that. It added a third dimension but beware that it will have you yelling at your book just as you yell in a horror movie at the idiot character that goes down the dark basement stairs.

THIS WAS A VERY GOOD BOOK, HAS A KILLER COVER, GREAT STORYLINE. I LOVED THE CHARACTERS THE BAD ONE GAVE ME THE CREEPS. THE ONLY PROBLEM I HAD WAS WYNN SHE WAS SO HARD HEADED, CAUSED HERSELF AND OTHERS TROUBLE. SHE WAS SUCH A SMART WOMAN IN SO MANY WAYS BUT DUMB AS A POST IN OTHERS. GEEZ! SHE HAD ME WANTING TO SHAKE HER. ALL IN ALL THANK GOODNESS FOR HER SETH AN ALPHA MALE, WHICH IS THE TYPE OF MALE SHE NEEDS. WYNN AND A WEAK MAN WOULD BE A DISASTER, SHE WOULD RUN ALL OVER HIM. THATS WHY SHE WAS BY HERSELF, ORDINARY MEN SHE WOULD TOTALLY OVERLOOK. THIS BOOK MADE ME LOL,CRY AND BREAK OUT IN A SWEAT. YIPPE-KY-AYY! FOR COWBOYS!

I've found me a new favorite author! I'll definitely be reading more of Ms. Rain. I had some definitely cringe-worthy moments while reading some of the more graphic descriptions in this novel, they were necessary to the story and plot and not gratuitous at all. This was a great read full of very well-developed characters containing mystery, a strong, smart female character with a sexy, HOT lawman (from Texas, of course!) ~ I wanted to read this one non-stop. And Ms. Rain must have taken lessons from Kristen Ashley in how to write epilogues: very nicely done!

4 stars. Wynne is a bill collector whose diligence leads to the discovery of a serial killer. Seth is a US Marshall who has been tracking the killer, when he arrives in Alaska he meets Wynne who is feisty and strong and willing to help track down the killer's next victims before he strrikes again. Her actions put her firmly in his crosshairs and it is down to Seth to protect the woman he is coming to have strong feelings for before she becomes the killer' next victim. This a great read with plenty of suspense. Recommended read.

This was a fantastic book! Qwilla Rain did a wonderful job of keeping me on the edge of my seat. She had just the right amount of suspense and mystery with the romance. The two main characters were completely lovable and had me rooting for them from the beginning. The female had the right amount of strength and vulnerability to make her a real person.

I'm looking forward to reading more books by Qwilla Rain!

Entertains and just enough suspense to keep it interesting. Creepy serial killers will do that!

It's the boy and girl fight love scenario but don't mind giving in to temptation! It was sexy and fun!

Only drawl back for me... At times the writing felt stiff, a bit robotic!

Overall, I recommend!

I had to re-read several passages as they were confusing. The flow was not good. Seriously a 30 year old virgin? There were several repeated spelling errors. This has the potential to be a good book with some editing.
