Gigi Fitzgerald has relocated to Woodstone, Connecticut where she prepares meals for people working to manage their weight. She calls her business Gigi’s Gourmet De-Lite and she is hoping to expand by making a deal with a local food manufacture. Just when her business seems to be looking up a horrible piece of bad publicity could mean the end of her dreams. One of her customers, a local restaurant reviewer named Martha, dies after an allergic reaction while eating one of the meals prepared by Gigi.
The death is declared an accident by an intriguing local detective. Detective Mertz and his team find that peanut oil was found on the food, and the victim was allergic to peanuts. Gigi can’t face losing her business and vows to find the person responsible.
I enjoyed this book very much. I chose the book solely by the cover and I was not disappointed in my choice. The main character is well developed. She is someone I could picture being a friend. The supporting characters are also interesting. There are a variety of personalities that fill out the story well. The pace of the plot is just right. I didn’t want to put the book down. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading the next book in the series.

Gigi was definitely the typical very amateur sleuth and did some things that didn't seem very smart, but she was kind of endearing, so I couldn't really fault her too much for wanting to catch a killer and clear her brand name of having killed someone. She was kind of funny sometimes, like when she and Sienna were snooping around and little Reg got away from them. I loved how she adopted the little Westie, Reg! She got a really nice ending from that particular little happening too. Sienna was a great bestie, although she seemed a little distracted, since at first she was suspecting her husband of seeing someone else. I felt so bad for her wanting to be a mom so much but having had no luck so far. Alice was a fun character, very down to earth and probably Gigi's nicest customer who actually did what she was supposed to on her diet by eating the gourmet light foods that Gigi made for her and not cheating like some of her other customers did.

I'm definitely interested in continuing to read the series. I'm seeing a possible love connection somewhere along the line, and it'll be interesting to see how it develops! Gigi was hoping for a business deal, so I'm hoping that now the murder was cleared up, maybe that'll come through for her. I'd guessed the killer before Gigi did, but I have a feeling that the author purposely left that clue to see if readers would pick up on it.

Not a bad first outing or first book in a series. Not great though either. I suffered through an immediate introduction in the first chapter of almost all the suspects, which made the first third of the book a bit of a bear, trying to remember who was who and keeping them from running together in my head. There was a bit - not a lot - of calorie counting that felt a bit unhealthy to me. Obviously, calorie counting is part of the protagonists job, but a few times when not doing her job, it's mentioned. Also, her reasons for "investigating" didn't feel realistic to me: she worries if she doesn't find out who really committed the crime, her business will suffer - but it never actually does, save for a contract from a big food company that she wasn't counting on anyway.

The protagonist, Gigi, kept having a running internal dialogue about Carlo, another character, that left me feeling completely confused: is she interested or not? I literally could not get a feel for what the author was trying to get across here.

Finally: a scene where one of the characters claims he can help her because his restaurant is closed for lunch do to plumbing issues, then in the very next scene, the Gigi is having lunch at that same restaurant that same day. Stuff like that bugs me.

There are things I did enjoy: I love the small town the author has created; she has introduced some interesting characters that could play a bigger part in future books. I like the detective she's introduced here too - although he wasn't around much throughout the story, she dropped enough hints of possible romantic tension that I'd like to read more. I love that the best friend plays a role and owns a bookshop. And I really liked the little twist at the end that had nothing to do with the plot, but left a smile on my face regardless. The mystery itself was interesting, with lots of suspects who had good reasons for wanting the deceased dead. I liked the final conflict as well, it was a nice twist on the heroine-in-peril.

I'll look for the next one and see which direction the series is going in before deciding to follow or not.

I picked this book up right after reading Murder Unmentionable by Meg London, because Allergic to Death is actually written by the same author (under a different name), and I had really enjoyed Murder Unmentionable. I found that I really loved this book too! The setting is a small upscale town in CT, and the main character is always cooking since she owns a healthy meal delivery service. Along the way she adopts a Westie named Reg, whom I loved, and there are two very different and interesting love interests. I liked this book so much that I'm sad to have to wait for a new book in the series. Definitely recommended!

I loved this first book. I can't wait to read the next in the series. It is such a shame though that it is only 3 books long.

This is pretty standard cozy mystery fare. The main character is okay, but breaking into the victim's property to find key evidence was taking it a bit far, as was the random bequest at the end which solved all of the main character's worries about her house - there was no logical reason for that, either. In addition, the inevitable protagonist-detective "are we going to have a relationship" type bits felt staged. All in all, it just didn't work for me.

Gigi Fitzgerald has left a disastrous marriage and left The Big Apple and moved to Woodstone, CT. In this little idyllic little community she starts Gigi Gourmet De-Lite, where she prepares three meals a day for the calorie-conscious customers.

Gigi is dropping off the lunches for her clients at the local playhouse. They winding up rehearsals for their latest production. One of Gigi's customers is Martha Bernhardt, a restaurant reviewer, who Gigi hopes will like her meals to provide a very positive review and really get her new business off to fast start. After dropping off the lunches on a rainy day, she offers to drop Martha at her car. As they are heading into town, Gigi notices that Martha's car is starting to swerve and ends up crashing into a tree. Martha dies and the cause is an allergic reaction to peanut product.

Gigi is sure that this could finish her business off. Not only will she not get the review she was hoping for, but she was also in line for a contract with food processor would package her products. In looking into how this could have happened and who might have wanted her dead, Gigi finds that Martha had quite a few enemies that would have like to see her out of picture. Adora is the lead in the play and in the past has had some run ins with Martha. Barbie, the trophy wife of Martha's ex would like her out of the picture, too. But then Martha had been in Al Forno, a restaurant owned by Emilio, a waitress had the misfortune to spill a glass of water on her. Would the possibility of a bad review that could ruin Al Forno be enough of a reason for Emilio to murder.

When she begins to look into who might be the killer, she heads to The Silver Lining who are having a showing for a new crafts-person, as she knows that some of the people she is interested in learning about, will be there. As she about to enter the shop she notices an adorable Westie tied to the parking meter. She soon learns that Reg used to belong to Martha. Winston Bernhardt is now taking care of Reg and offers him to Gigi, who gladly accepts. Besides, while walking Reg in the evenings she will be able to search for clues.

There are a wonderful set of supporting characters in the book, too. Sienna, who a bookstore in town is always there to bounce ideas off. We have Carlo, who is Emilio nephew, who Gigi might think about becoming better friends with. But then, what about Detective Mertz, who may not be such a bad guy even if he is a policeman.

Looking forward to the next book and am looking forward to learning where Gigi's business will go. Of course looking forward to the further adventures of Reg.

What a cute book. New-to-me author Peg Cochran writes lightly and entertainingly. The story was plausible, and I was kept guessing until the very end. (I was close but didn't guess the right murderer.) The main characters are friendly and amusing, with just the right amount of curiosity. I was amazed at the tediousness of Gigi's job--starting her own gourmet diet food business. She no sooner finished cooking, packaging, and delivering breakfast to her clients than she had to start on lunch prep. What a tough job that would be to continue--absolutely no down time. I'd definitely be a client, though, all the recipes sounded delicious. (There are also a few recipes included in the back of the book.) It did disturb me a little that the cover art shows her dog with its paws on the prep table right next to the food. Disturbing, especially when she makes a point of keeping the kitchen clean when the policeman is there. I look forward to reading the next in the series.

When I started reading this book I didn't think I was going to like it. The writing struck me as wonky and I wasn't warming up to the characters. Midway through the book, though, I started liking them and the mystery was pretty good. I did not have the murdered on top of my list, and I enjoyed the side stories. Gigi is trying to run a cook-for-you diet meal program. I do not know how she can handle 3 meals a day, with deliveries, but she seems to handle it fine. The local newspaper reviewer suffers an allergy attack after eating Gigi's lunch (what is a restaurant reviewer doing signing up for a 3 meals a day delivery plan????) the local police think it's an accident. But Gigi knows she did not use peanut oil in her lunches, and she's afraid her business will suffer. So she sets off to find the real killer. There's a bit of a romantic triangle, an unexpected pet adoption, and some other plot twists, and I look forward to the next book in the series.

A new author, a new series. I liked the book enough to order the 2nd one. Gigi runs a weight loss catering service. Morning, noon and night she cooks, packs and delivers meals to people who are on her client list. And all goes well, until one dies because she is allergic to the peanut oil pored over her food. Gigi knows she did not do it, so to save her business, she and her friend Sienna start investigating on their own.

Gigi Fitzgarald has brought a new diet plan to Woodstone with her business Gigi's Gourmet De-lite. She makes 3 meals a day for her clients. With Martha Bernhardt, a restaurant reviewer, as her newest client she just knows her business is going to grow as her clients lose some inches. When Martha drops dead after eating one of Gigi's meals things just go nuts! Seems Martha had a peanut allergy and there were traces of peanut oil in her last meal.

Gigi know she didn't drizzle any peanut oil anywhere near Martha's meal so she needs to find out who did and fast before more of her clients start dropping like flies instead of dropping the pounds.

Dollycas's Thoughts
The author has created a wonderful mix of characters in a wonderful setting. Gigi has just enough spice to make her a woman to reckoned with and a heart that will have you rooting for her from the first chapter. Her friend Sienna is a great sounding board and Detective Mertz was really growing me and Gigi too. The puppy on the cover is a lovable Westie that used to belong to Martha. Gigi wastes no time in agreeing to take in her new four legged friend.

As someone who is allergic to nuts this story his me on a personal level. Thankfully I have never had a severe reaction and watch what I eat so have not even had a minor flare up in years. But what a perfect way to commit a murder. Well almost perfect because the culprit does get caught.

A great debut for what I know is going to be a great series. There are even some of Gigi's de-lite-ful recipes to try and some dieting tips too!

The premise of this new series is a good one. An owner of a gourmet controlled calorie catering company, Gigi Fitzgerald is new to Woodstone, CT. She moved there upon recommendation by her best friend, Sienna, who owns a book store, The Book Nook.

Gigi loves her little cottage she lives/cooks in. She loves her clients, well almost all of them, and she has large dreams for the future. Until...

When Martha Bernhardt dies from an allergic reaction to peanut oil, that Gigi knows she didn't put on her food, well the world seems to crumble down on Gigi. Actually, this was a bit confusing for me as I understood the panic attacks, but couldn't understand the reactions of the characters around her (like the Detective,) when the attacks occurred, such as in the police station.

The diet tips and the recipes are nice extras. And, for a debut novel, I think this series has promise.

Super cute mystery with some lovely recipes shared at the end of the mystery. Food throughout as the main character, Gigi, is the owner of Gigi's Gourmet De-Lite. Gigi creates low calorie, but definitely delicious sounding, meals to her dieting clients.
One of her clients dies after eating one of Gigi's meals and Gigi knows it's sabotage since the death was due to a known peanut allergy.
This is what makes a cozy appealing to me, that the main character is naturally drawn into solving the the mystery. Gigi needs to save her business since people are shying away from joining her clientele as rumor and the media are reporting how the death occurred. This is her livelihood.
Two hunky men and a cute dog in the picture as well as living in a quaint little town...all contribute to the earmarks of a promising series.

This is the first in a series and I really enjoyed it. I will definitely look for others in the series.

Gigi runs her own Gourmet Diet Meal business after moving to a small upscale Conneticut town after a divorce. One of her clients dies from anaphalctic shock after having peanut oil on her food. Gigi knows she did not ute peanut oil, so assumes someone killed her. The police closed the case as an accidental death, but Gigi will not give up. This could ruin her business. She ends up adopting a Westie named Reg, whom I loved, who belonged to the deceased. There is also a bit of a love triangle with Gigi, Carol a restaurant owner and the detective investigaing the case. The supporting characters are a delight as well. Definitely recommended!

Gigi is a really cool character.

She has some great friends and a business that she can be proud of.
She helps people get healthier and feel better about themselves.

I really hope that Gigi and Mertz have the opportunity to get to know eachother better, I think that they could be a really great couple if they take the time to give it a chance.

I am really glad that everything worked out in the end.

A nice cozy with a somewhat different twist. This time the protagonist (amateur sleuth) provides a service of preparing delicious but healthy meals which she delivers to her clients. Those who aren't cheating do manage to lose weight. Unfortunately one of her clients is murdered and it looks as though she is guilty so she has to find the killer to redeem herself.

This is a great first book in a new series. I've never read anything by Peg Cochran, so I wasn't sure what to expect. Now I know to expect a great and easily enjoyable read with each new book in the series. Can't wait for the next one to come out.

This book was stupidly annoying. She adopts the dog of the murder victim, and mentions him twice. The characters also aren't very interesting, and the speech is very "uppity" and unrealistic.

When the client of a woman running a diet meal delivery service dies because of her peanut allergy, company owner Gigi is blamed and begins searching for the real killer.

All cozy mysteries have this same basic plot (amateur sleuth who runs own business, soon-to-be-romantic interest cop, quirky bestie) but somehow I expected more of this because it was actually not self-published. And then it was actually worse than most of the self-pubbed ones I’ve read.

And it was a bunch of stupid, annoying things. Gigi’s business model didn’t make sense. The two love interests flopped about like dead fish. Everyone spoke with the same cadence, and contractions were few and far between. The big confrontation with the killer ends with Gigi literally running away, and people are more interested in the town play than the fact that one of them is a murderer.

It took me ages to get through this. I only continued on because I was filling a reading prompt with it.

Loved the food references in this bright mystery which has a great Happy Ever After Ending with a bit of a twist. Peg Cochran cooks up a great tale about Gigi, the cook starting over again in a small town who is running a catering business supplying individual meals to people wanting to lose weight. If you like to cook there are plenty of references to meals cooked, and you can smell the basil and garlic!

The plot runs smoothly and altogether the book reads like the work of a "pro" - which of course Peg is with several light and witty series to her credit. Gigi is a likeable character and there are enough intriguing story lines to keep you guessing. I'm wondering what will happen with the possible romance with the detective? Guess I'll just have to read Book Two, Steamed To Death, to find out. That won't be at all unpleasant!

This was a new author for me, and the beginning of a new series. To be honest, it just wasn't my cup of tea... or meal of diet food, as the case may be. The main characters didn't appeal to me, other than the dog (but that's usually the case). I have no clue how Gigi had any time to solve a murder between her meal prep and running all over the place delivering food. I had the killer pegged about half-way through the book but not the motive. The writing was good even the story didn't appeal to me, and I might read other things by the author, but doubt seriously if I will continue with this series.

I have wanted to read this series for quite some time and picked the entire series up from the library last week.
Gigi has started her life over after divorce with a low calorie meal delivery service, she makes and delivers the meals to her customers based on likes, allergies, etc. But when 1 of her clients dies after eating her meal it is supposed that Gigi messed up and used peanut oil on someone who was allergic to peanuts.
This story had a nice flow and I became to get more comfortable with the characters as the story went on, overall an enjoyable read.

Gigi runs a small "Gourmet De-Lite" "catering" business out of her home, providing low-calorie meals to local clients. (I found the premise a little weak and based on the number of clients described in the book don't see how she makes enough money to sustain herself; also cooking and delivering 3 fresh meals, 7 days a week? When did she have time to do any sleuthing? Or eat her own meals?) When one of her clients dies from a peanut allergen found in her lunch, Gigi knows she has to find the killer or lose her business.

Read this for the recipes.

This was not my favourite cosy, and although it had an interesting plot, some great detailed recipes and a pretty good twist, I found the characters - especially the main characters - rather predictable and annoying.

This was not badly written, it just wasn’t what I was looking for inna cosy.

The show must go on

Gigi is trying to build her business serving healthful meals for those trying to lose weight, but when one of her customers dies from an allergic reaction, her once-rosy future no longer seems so bright. She knows she didn’t use any ingredients that could have caused the woman’s death, so someone must have tampered with her meal - but who, and why?
