A sprawling noir thriller of the classic stock: a small desert town, bad people with clever plans, and blood spilled over a paltry sum of money.
Murphy loses us a bit when his characters wander off into multi-paragraph musings about what it means to live in society, do we follow rules because they're good or because we're threatened to, blah, blah. This is all territory that could be better served through action, rather than explicit statement of the theme.
However, Murphy's undeniable strength is in creating a cast of memorable characters. The small town of Nickelback, CA comes to life with colorful yet believable folks, each with their own backstory and agenda. And in the latter half of the book, as things boil to a tense finish, each of these characters weaves back into the plot in a believable, meaningful way.
