A little girl A mysterious presence A case within a case
Jess and Libby’s side hustle is becoming a full-time job. Ghosts abound in St. Sebastian and houses aren’t the only things being haunted.
Little Jelena Blazvic has an invisible friend, a lady that’s becoming less friendly by the day. Her crying, sleepless nights, and strange obsession are putting the family on edge. Jelena might not be scared, but her parents sure are.
Jess and Libby take the case and the situation is more complicated than they thought. If there’s anything worse than a crying ghost, it’s a ghost that can’t explain why she’s crying. To help the family they have to uncover the lady’s mysterious past quickly because her distress is mounting.
Did something terrible happen in the Blazevic’s house or is it a secret from the ghost’s past? Could it be something else entirely?
With the help of their own kids, and plenty of ghosts they meet along the way, Jess and Libby will risk everything to find the key to solving more than one family mystery.
USA Today bestselling author A.W. Hartoin grew up in rural Missouri, but her grandmother lived in the Central West End area of St. Louis. The CWE fascinated her with its enormous houses, every one unique. She was sure there was a story behind each ornate door. Going to Grandma’s house was a treat and an adventure. As the only grandchild around for many years, A.W. spent her visits exploring the many rooms with their many secrets. That’s how Mercy Watts and the fairies of Whipplethorn came to be. As an adult, A.W. Hartoin decided she needed a whole lot more life experience if she was going to write good characters so she joined the Air Force. It was the best education she could’ve hoped for. She met her husband and traveled the world, living in Alaska, Italy, and Germany before settling in Colorado for nearly eleven years. Now A.W. has returned to Germany and lives in picturesque Waldenbuch with her family and two spoiled cats, who absolutely believe they should be allowed to escape and roam the village freely.
Having enjoyed the first book in this series I was absolutely desperate to read book 2. I was not disappointed. The author has once again managed to hook me with these fabulous characters and I love them all and how they all help each other solving the crimes with the help of a few ghosts here and there. Humor and mischief makes for a delightful read. Looking forward to book 3.
And the fun continues. A Trunk, a Canoe, and all the Barbecue picks up right where Dead Companions left off and is every bit as outrageously funny and delightful. Libby and sons Max and Henri and Jess and daughter Mariah have settled into the former funeral home in St. Sebastian. They’ve become quite accustomed to the ghosts they all can see. In many ways, in fact, it feels like their little family has expanded with all the comings and goings and new friendships. Both with the living and the used-to-be-living. We’ve learned a lot about a day in the life (death?) of a ghost: apparently they aren’t all just hanging around waiting for closure so they can move on to the Big Beyond. They can pop around as much as they want and seem to have quite full lives (deaths?) – singing, cooking, visiting, joining groups, and yes, scaring people now and then when they feel like it. Author A. W. Hartoin has done a masterful job of blending the real and unreal and making it all believable. We have to look twice just as Libby and Jess do to see if it’s a ghost or not.
Life is better than when they felt they were escaping to St. Seb. Libby’s divorce isn’t final but so far she’s avoided contact with Derek and has a regular job. Jess is teaching art classes and slowly healing from husband Hal’s unexpected death, although still no insurance settlement. High school isn’t horrible anymore and the boys and Mariah are involved in planning an extravagant school program. Libby’s mom Bev is visiting and that’s a good thing. Along with the suspense and the mystery is the day-to-day family and friend issues. Leo, the handsomest man not alive, is still around but depressed, so they are all trying to cheer him up, mostly by trying to come up with the right recipe for his mother’s albondigas soup that he loved. The series feels so welcoming and familiar.
Word travels fast in St. Seb and Jess and Libby are in demand because of their knack with the ghosts: resolving issues, solving mysteries, and generally just facilitating communication and providing a little family counseling as well. But as their side business has grown so has the suspense and danger. Libby and Jess are determined, fearless, sometimes (often?) reckless and never give up.
Libby and Jess are called on to help family with a ghost that just won’t leave. She seems to have come with a trunk they recently purchased. She’s a little old lady, seems harmless, but she is only visible to the children and upsets them with her crying (and nighttime baths). She has a funny accent – that gets even funnier later – so they can’t figure out who she is, where she came, what’s up with the trunk, or what is making her cry. Of course they can solve this mystery. But not, apparently, without sticking their noses in where they aren’t wanted, ruffling a lot of feathers, putting themselves in serious jeopardy and discovering a mystery within a mystery (and maybe a clue to the next case). The cast of characters, both ghost and alive, is large and keeps growing as the series moves along. All so well-drawn, so full, such great backstories with interesting histories and relationships to St. Seb and others in it, past and present, and all adding something of value to the story. The clues, and some red herrings, take us back and forth between the past and the present, the living and the dead, and will keep you guessing and going, “Aha!” in equal measure.
There is so much to like in an A. W. Hartoin book: a well-structured, fast-moving plot that carries you smoothly to a very satisfying ending; references to food like the barbeque that has you drooling, or even Jell-o salad, ham sandwiches and tater tots have you smacking your lips; retro references to TV shows like Marcus Welby, M.D., Hee Haw, and Lawrence Welk that make you (secretly) nostalgic. It just feels like you could be friends with Libby and Jess. And never forget the humor. Sometimes it feels like every single thing has an element of humor in it and has you laughing out loud, rereading the line, or wanting to tell someone about the funniest thing you just read.
Thanks to author Hartoin for continuing her flawless track record of writing eminently readable, enjoyable, fantastic books and for providing an advance copy of A Trunk, a Canoe, and all the Barbecue for my reading pleasure and honest review. A pleasure it was; I hope this series continues for a long, long time. Catch up now, and while waiting for the next book read A. W. Hartoin’s other series and get to know Mercy, Stella and all the rest. You will love them just as you will love this Jess and Libby Paranormal Mystery. All opinions are my own.
I really enjoyed the first book in this series and was eagerly awaiting this book and it didn't disappoint. I loved it and think I have just discovered my new favourite series. One of the best paranormal mystery series out there. I loved everything about this book from the delightful characters (adults), the imaginative, creative and energetic children, the scared little kitty, the uncontrollable pack of hounds too the ghostly ghost needing help or lending a hand. All are entertaining and have a part to play in this cleverly plotted mystery. I would say a lot are recurring characters, so I would recommend you read the first book but it is a must read series so it should be on your to be read list anyway. I loved the fact that it wasn't simple (for the characters not the reader) from trying to work out why the adults couldn't see the ghost to even what language she was speaking all added to the mystery. The home life drama and antics with the boys are just charming. So much is going on that I didn't want it to end but I stayed up all night finishing it. Can't wait for the next book. A family at there wits end with a crying ghost that only the children can see, turn to new residents Libby and Jess. The best friends have gained a reputation of being able to help with all your ghostly needs after moving into the funeral home but not even they can see the old woman. With the help of their own children the pair quickly learn the ghost seems to have an attachment to an old storage trunk. Can they track down where the trunk came from? to help them solve who the mystery ghost is and why she keeps crying? In doing so leads them to an even bigger mystery and the disappearance of a teenage girl. The ghost in St Seb are all willing to help in the investigation except the one ghost who can help them the most. I was given this free review copy book at my request and have voluntary left this review,
I read this concurrently with my mom who is a huge Mercy Watts fan (a series that never really captivated me). She loved this book and thoroughly enjoyed it, so I think fans of A.W. Hartoin are probably going to love this series as well. I thoroughly enjoyed the mystery in this one, it felt more developed and interesting than the Leo mystery, but the issues I had with the first novel were still present. My main complaint being the lack of emotional depth with our main girls and no introduction to the infamous Derek. His appearance, or lack of, at Thanksgiving was teased the whole book and I was disappointed that the novel ended before that revelation. Based on how fast these first two books came out, we may get the next one in a few weeks and it might change how I feel.
We pick up not even a month after the previous book ends with Libby and Jess working on getting their lives back together. Again, the pros in this book are numerous, but I particularly enjoy A. W. Hartoin's well developed side characters. The introduction of Libby's mom was a welcome addition to our cast of characters as were Mika and his family. Everyone is well developed and fleshed out except for the Eggs. They read as one character and if you asked me to tell you who was who at any given moment I would have no idea.
The mystery here was interesting and a fun way to introduce us to a multitude of new characters. My big complaint was that .
Overall, I am still enjoying these novels. They are quick, funny, and just plain fun. I will probably read the next one when it comes out and enjoy that too.
This series feels like being under a warm, cozy blanket during a winter storm. It’s comforting and very enjoyable!
Best friends (and thankfully, ONLY best friends) Libby and Jess and their three kids (Mariah and twins Henri, and Max) have settled into their new home—formerly a funeral home—and have become a cohesive family unit. Libby and Jess now have regular jobs and live contentedly with Leo, the ghostly former funeral director. In addition to their regular jobs, they have a side gig helping to solve ghostly interferences. In this one, they help a family whose children have noticed a crying old woman in their bedrooms.
The mystery is really interesting in this one. And I loved how the town embraced this crew in their mystery-solving abilities. There are some very colorful side characters, including Tank and Taylor, editor and intern at the Sentinel, Eric and Sylvia, Leo’s son and daughter-in-law, Ned and Lynn from Dutzow BBQ, and jack-of-all-trades Bear. When Libby’s mom joins them for Thanksgiving, things become even more lively and fun in their household.
The ending was really good, and I can’t wait to read what’s in store for them next!
New residents in St. Sebastian, MO. The quaint town with more per capita ghosts and the hot bed of paranormal activity! They are slowly recovering from the loss of a loved one and a marriage with the help of their children and a few friendly ghosts that are so well meaning! A desperate father with an anxious wife and children asks them to help figure out what’s happening with an older ghost that is upset, crying and sometimes naked in the bathroom! Along the way, they make new friends and meet more ghosts. With a surprise ending, you will read quickly until the very end! Love this next installment and looking forward to the third! This is a quick paced read that doesn’t drag and has very endearing characters. This is a favorite author and I hope she becomes one for you also!
Something about this, Series just gets more and more interesting. It is now after Halloween right before Thanksgiving and Christmas. This time they meet a gentle giant who has a ghost in his home who somewhat scares a kid but not really is pretty friendly. But upsets his wife, so the girls decide to help out they linked the girl to a trunk that the guy had bought. There begins a whole whirlwind. They are seeing way more ghosts, even animal, ghost and dealing with Leo and his grief over his son being his murderer. Through and through, we get introduced to more characters and the Eggs decide to create a Christmas pageant with the school-age children, which I’m really hoping gets talked about in the next book and I’m interested to see if their dad Derek shows up.
Love this series! This book (like the first one) has everything! It has humor (lots of humor), charming characters, ghosts (more and more all the time), evil doers doing evil deeds, holiday decorating, food (lots of food), a haunted house ( actually a former funeral home), a cat, mysteries to solve, no editing issues, no cliffhanger endings, and best of all…a rollicking fun read! So, jump right in and enjoy the fun. I, myself, am planning to curl up in my comfy reading chair and enjoy the next book.
A Trunk, A canoe, and all! The Barbecue: (Afterlife Issues Book 2)
Wow! These stories have so many characters, ghosts and kids working angles and planning shows at school. Their plan for Battles of the Bands on their front porch during Halloween was brilliant! The two best friends could see ghosts and even most of their kids could. Trying to keep up with their kids was challenging enough!
It's after midnight and I have work tomorrow, but I just had to finish this one. A really great story. An old trunk and a crying ghost lead our heroines on a twisty journey to an old tragedy. The story is wonderfully written with great characters, bags of humour, lots of ghosts and cute pets. I am really enjoying these books. Highly recommended and I have already got the next one.
The trappers are back and they still smell. Now I'm wondering if opossum smells like kangaroo or pig tails when it's cooking. Then there is the antique trunk, the unscrupulous dealer, and the ghost who owned the trunk. And the "eggs" are in charge of the grade school Christmas show. They want to feature the Janet Jackson song Nasty!
Like the first book, this was a fun read. The whole family helps figure out what's going on. Of course, the mystery is solved and justice is served. Meanwhile, the family in St. Seb grows. This is definitely a story (and series) about family, not just Jess and Libby.
I want to like this series so much. It has everything I like in a story. But there is just something off about it for me. Too many people introduced throughout the book that gets confusing? The way the characters don’t really have a connection or closeness with each other? Maybe I’ll try the next book eventually.
3.75 stars. I love the characters in this series. The plot played out very smoothly and gets no complaints from me. I look forward to seeing what happens in the next book…if there is one? I haven’t looked yet.
Book one held my interest slightly better than book two. But they were both entertaining. RECOMMEND.
This second book of the series was even better than the first. I just love this authors characters flaws and all. Great fast paced story with some returning characters from book 1. Looking for a quick mystery and some light hearted laughter, this books for you.
This had so much going on. The story should have been about the trunk and how family sticks together. The mother Bev coming and how that effected everyone plus the boys with their father. There was the pets and ghosts that everyone couldn’t see again so much going on. At times it was confusing and some things got lost in translation.
Fun series with murder mysteries that aren't obvious from the start. The girls are settling into St Seb and the kids are too. I have to admit the boys really add levity to the book that isn't ridiculous. Since Jess was able to get the insurance straightened out, it will be interesting to see if we meet Libby's ex- during Thanksgiving.
A.W.Hartoin has a way of driving a story and the hearts of the characters. Two books into the series I have experienced a heart touching tear jerking moment as well as the thrill of danger in each book.
Great paranormal mystery series. Fun loving cozies with the right amount of distress to keep the heart pumping
After buying and living in a famous former funeral home where Leo the ghost can be seen by all the residents plus their hissing cat, Libby and Jess find themselves in the middle of another ghostly murder mystery. I loved this story even more than the first book. I hope there will be more books in this well written series.
Another funny mystery set in ghost-plauged St. Seb. It's not just the mystery that makes this story wonderful but also the characters establishing their new lives. I want to be a part of this family!
I started with the first of the series and was so glad to see characters from the Mercy Watts series. All the quick humor and fast dialogue makes this such an enjoyable read. Highest recommendation!
A well written and entertaining story. Better than the first book as you get to know the community and become invested in the characters. A fun read that was hard to put down. Highly recommend.
This is the second book in the series and it did not disappoint. The relationships within their new community develop. There is not as much involvement of the children as in the first because the mystery is multifaceted. Really enjoyed the mystery! Looking forward to what comes next.
So enjoyable, the characters are believable, even the dead ones. The only thing I had trouble with was sometimes keeping the kids straight. The story was fun, not frumpy . A.W. Hartoin at het best. Can't wait for the next one.
I'm really enjoying this new series and seeing how characters are being developed. This book will keep you entertained and guessing. I recommend it. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I'm liking these books. They're completely implausible, not to say impossible but, they are excellent escapism reading. I believe a lot of people need that these days. I know I sure do.
Making the best out of the bad, best friends deal with real life issues add in afterlife issues. Two friends going thru the drama of life still make time helping the lost souls with plenty of help from family and friends they meet along the way.
The family gradually recover from grief. Ghosts can tell lies, absentDads can occaidiobalky be useful. A weeping ghost sets the detectives off in another mystery, and the twins arepkanning an amazing Christmas oGrant.
This is the second book in the series, another murder mystery and lots of food descriptions. I was hungry most of the time while reading, as this author can talk food. Great read.
