In YOGA, Ernest Wood does a comprehensive review of the classical literature on the subject. Although he touches all areas he does not put an inordinate amount of attention on the physical aspects of the science as modern texts tend to do. The emphasis here is on conveying the deeper meaning of Yoga as a science and philosophy to the western reader.

Wood was particularly well placed to do this as he was born in England but lived for many years in India during which time he became well versed in Sanskrit. His knowledge of the subtle nuances of the language together with his understanding of how the western mind works combined to give this book a depth that is often missing in current literature on the subject. I find that the most complex subjects have been conveyed in a simple, clear and readable manner which make them a delight to digest.

I never feel that a subject had been left unfinished or on the contrary that the author had bitten off more than he could chew and consequently had given me indigestion. Woods has a profound grasp of his subject which is obviously experiential as well as academic.

I highly recommend it for anyone interested in more than a superficial understanding of the timeless teachings of Yoga

I've been searching for this book for years--not in my bookshelves but online. I read it so long ago, maybe in my late 30's. It made a huge impression on me. In more recent years I've wanted to reread it but could never remember the author's name. Try searching for a book titled Yoga . . . and see how many responses you get.

Well, just moments ago I was reorganizing my book shelves and what do you think I found--Yes! This most precious volume written by Ernest Wood. I shall begin reading it anew, eager to revisit and relearn its wonders.

Unlike many recent yoga books this is a comprehensive introduction to the philosophy of yoga, rather than a guide to the yoga postures. Ernest Wood was an authoritative author on this subject, a contemporary of Annie Besant and Sri Krishnamurti. He wrote this book towards the end of his life having experienced life in the West and in India. His book is easy to read but not lightweight. The book would be an excellent read for anyone who is embracing yoga practice and looking to find the philosophy behind it. His explanations of the breathing practices, prana and mantras are particularly interesting and not very often found in other yoga books. The healing breath for instance is rarely described elsewhere.

This is my first and only yoga book. It has a very good chapter on breathing and enough asanas in the next chapter to last you a lifetime of yoga.
