Gudipati Venkatachalam aka Chalam (Telugu : గుడిపాటి వెంకటాచలం) (1894–1979), a Telugu writer and philosopher, was one of the most influential personalities in the modern Telugu literature. Telugu is a language spoken by more than ten crore(100 millions) people and the literary interest of the people was at its height during first half of the 20th century.
Most of his writings were regarding Women, especially the kind of difficulties women encounter-physical as well as psychological-in the society, families from their near and dear ones. Chalam discussed how the women should encounter them. the themes of his writings, philosophical tinge in his writings blended with his writing style earned him unenviable place in Telugu literary world
Woman too has a body; it should be given exercise. Woman too has a mind; it should be given knowledge. Woman too has a heart; it should be given experience. - Chalam
Maidanam, the most famous and most controversial of Chalam’s novels, dramatises his ideas on marriage, freedom and the moral issues involved in them. He gave a violent jolt to the complacence of the Telugu literary world, and by extension to the Telugu society itself, by writing one controversial novel after another.
Rajeswari, a young, frustrated housewife. She narrates her story in the first person although it is not clear whom she addresses. It all starts with her thorough disillusionment with her tradition-bound, unfeeling, emotionally sterile lawyer-husband who is given to treating her as a piece of property, as one who fulfills his sexual and social needs. Her deliverance comes in the form of Ameer, a client of her husband. Their very first meeting is an emotionally charged and sexually exciting experience. His looks pierce her clothes and caress her all over her body. This is a new experience for her. She has never known anything so exhilarating like that before. When finally Ameer embraces her, in the absence of her husband of course, she reacts with a cry of joy and after he is gone she kisses herself in the mirror and feels that Ameer has endowed divinity on her. This realization marks the death of her old self. She plunges headlong into a life of passion and bliss with Ameer.
Soon enough Ameer, asks her to “come away” with him. It is interesting to note here that apart from his passion and physical attraction for Rajeswari no other reason is cited by Chalam for Ameer’s taking such a drastic step. Equally puzzling is the complete blocking out of all details of his background. But be that as it may, they decide to go away to “maidanam,” a wide open plain where they will not be disturbed by society.
For a while Rajeswari agonizes over whether she is driven by animalistic lust or noble love or the simple desire to free herself from the shackles of soul-killing traditions. One more charector is Meera a handsome sixteen years boy. After Ameer has gone away Rajeswari turns to Meera in a major way for emotional and material support.
I recommend reading this book to all +18yr people who can read Telugu especially Husbands,Wifes and people in Love. You may like or dislike the subject but it helps you in understanding the relationships.
Updated on: 03/30/2018 Its not easy to make films based on hit novels.Director, Narisimha Nandi made a Telugu Movie - "Lajja" loosely based on this hard hitting novel. Its released around February 2016. I liked one song from this movie. Just listen the audio version for some good romantic lyrics: link: Audio Song

One of the dynamic (I call him dynamic for his views on human relations during the days when such views are not even spoken in public) writers in Telugu literature. For his views on women and their freedom of thought. His views on relationships which all his works portray which are thought provoking.
Maidanam - a book that challenges orthodoxy and throws free-will at your face!
Because when you get down to it, who decided what is right and what is wrong? What is the basis for that classification? And why are we so fussy about morality when all morality is subjective?
The book has our protagonist - a young housewife in an unhappy marriage - do and feel things which could be considered revolting even going by today's standards (it's actually astonishing that this was written in the 1920s). There's a considerable debate around lust and desire, a woman's sexual expression and right, of power and subservience, and the extent and limits of what one calls "love".
On the surface, yes it is indeed a feminist book, but dig deeper and you'll see this book talks for much more than that. Or maybe it's just me reading too much between the lines.
Because you might not agree with everything this book tries to convey, but the crime would be to deny a person of their right to think otherwise.

I have read this book during my late teen years. At that time, it was quite difficult for me to comprehend the book in totality. I have recently read this book again. The protagonist is a young married lady who is in a neither happy nor sad marriage. She walks out of the marriage and lives with a guy whom she loves immensely. The book is about how she makes her choices and challenges the conventional norms. It talks about absolute freedom of thought and what amazes me is that this book was written 1920s. I will not reduce this book to just a feminist book as it digs much deeper than that.
I read somewhere that this book is about women having equal choices as men.
Consider this: if a mistake made by a man is accepted more easily in a society, it doesn't make it right! if this symbolizes equality, I feel equality for women is not worth fighting for.
The author ignores the first argument at one point in the book to justify the protagonist's mistake. A mistake should be a mistake for all, A right should be a right for all and that's equality to me.
The story is flawed. There is no justification to any of the characters fate. This isn't a love story and this isn't a story about figuring out life.
I agree with the protagonist argument that women weren't allowed to most of things men do. It would have been much better had she questioned the equality for things that mattered
I would have hated the book the same way, had the genders in the books were reversed.
it's a great book. ee book chadhivina tharvatha nen first raasina review idhi.

How could she let a person come into her life again who left her? Her consent in some things is missing. And yes her love is missing logic too. How could anyone let their partner have an affair? How could anyone agree to intimacy without their consent? To my view thanu devudini, society ni edhirinchi dare chesinaa kuda, thanani penchina society thanani fail chesindhi. 4.naaku ee novel chadhuvuthunnappudu "woman ni society oka tool laaga choosthundhi, person laa kaadhu" anipinchindhi 5.Naaku rajeshwari husband, ameer, meer mugguru okelaa kanipinchaaru. "They r going against the views, consent, thoughts of their partner" 6.Rape ante ne without consent kadha, but to my view she was raped by meer, she didn't has her consent, but she agreed. I think an agreement and a consent are different.

My first "Chalam" novel. Read it when I was around 18 years. shattered my ideas of societal norms. I read it in the first place as I "heard" that Chalam is an author that's not supposed to be read. Out of rebellious curiosity. But I'm glad I read, it helped expand my societal views, appreciate the diversity in thoughts, people. Though I never subscribe to some of his extreme views, learned to respect the diversity and his dare to question.
Utterly disappointing. Reads like a failed attempt at erotica by a horny teenager. There is hardly any storyline or character development in this book. Little else is described other than the burning desire and raunchy lovemaking between the principle characters who bring death and destruction upon themselves because of their unbridled passion and jealousy.
The main characters are unlikable, even repulsive at times. The protagonist Rajeshwari is a naïve young woman who walks out of an unhappy marriage straight into the arms of a controlling, abusive, opportunistic Ameer who has little interest in her beyond her body. Setting aside the morality of seeking pleasure outside the confines of marriage, that too with multiple partners, what the protagonist does is outright stupid. She cuts herself off from family and society with little concern for her future or safety, and throws herself at the mercy of a toxic man who has no qualms in physically abusing her, inflicting psychological torture on her by withholding affection and abandoning her when she gets pregnant. She is so blinded by her passion for Ameer that she goes to extreme lengths to get another woman that he takes a fancy for into his bed. She justifies his physical abuse towards her, even taking pride in it. The third principle character Meera is equally vile; he stalks and lusts for the protagonist while addressing her as 'Didi'.
How this book came to be known as an epochal work in Telugu literature is beyond my comprehension. Other than the shock value of describing intimate scenes between a couple in graphic detail, there is no substance in this book. And it is definitely not about women's liberation or empowerment. The protagonist does not embark on a journey of self-discovery by breaking society's norms that sets her on the path of freedom and enlightenment. She simply walks from an unhappy marriage into a toxic relationship that ultimately decimates her.
This is nothing more than a twisted tale about immature people that leaves the reader disturbed and agitated.
This was one of the worst novels I have ever read in my life .. This writer lacks ethics, morals, and values in his thoughts. I felt like this book was written written by hot headed teenager. More than his intellect, his hormones made him right the content I believe. I heard a lot about writer Chalam, that his works always reflected pro- women concepts and supported feminism. This is neither pro-women or the work was somewhere supporting the women empowerment. Don't go by the title Maidanam, this has got nothing to do with land or fight for land, this more of fight to satisfying bodies, somewhere mind was playing a role. This book is more describing of raw lust and sex ideas that goes on in one's mind when it is set completely free with no boundaries. Three men have played their part in the main lead's life .. lady here lacked her control on mind, body and mainly situations, her decisions not only damaged the lives of people around her, but in turn caused her misery, men also have played a major role in damaging her life. Writer Chalam is today's RGV who can speak anything convincingly but lacks basic social sense and common sense. You conveniently skip this novel if you are looking for some fun and values in story. The only thing I liked in this novel is the command writer had on Telugu literature, his power in describing situations were good and clear.
ONE WORD " I AM TERRIBLY DISSAPOINTED, I REGRET READING THIS BOOK .. I WANTED TO GIVE A RATING OF 0/5"

English:Difference between social norms and individual freedom is well protrayed in this book.how does a married lady unshackels from well rooted customs and leads an happy life after attaining her independence is beautiful. this could be intrrpreted as filthy lady and softporn story by existing society.but it is not !!.One should have a deep understanding of belief systems .though it is 80 pages book, this made me analyze about a woman individualism and meaning of true freedom.I appreciate Chalam's courage to write this novel 90 years back and it reflects current day's situation. you can read if you can analyze and interpret this novel after reading. Donot just read it and put it aside just like other fiction novels. Interpret philosophical points from the story and think about what made chalam to write this kind of story.
I was waited almost 4years to take time and read this master piece. This book was recommended by my senior during a protest in Delhi. Coming to the book, I like the narration especially the way her feelings were expressed . This book was written a hundred years ago , that’s amazes me…he’s views are still relevant to 21 st century women & society.
In Book lady belongs to dominant caste and her relationship with husband was utterly mechanical. This phenomenon now not just restricted to those castes, now it spread across all sections of society. Women still regarded as Alien in human body , who is not supposed to speak , laugh, & joke in public ( I mean 2+ people).
Yes , i agree modern women got education, choice of employment/career & sometimes choice of spouse too (limited) but this is not more than 30% of the population.
Most women even educated still believes they’re the cause for having girl child. Nowadays all women believes (most) dowry is okay, even if it’s difficult for parents ,this is due to most parents have two kids. So, the property/money is obviously inherently gained by siblings ( they spending according to their wish).
I got across this recommendation from one of the interviews of Trivikram Srinivas, a renowned writer for Telugu films. When I started reading this book, it didn't feel anything different to most of the drama or emotions that we encounter in today's contemporary cinema. What astounded me was the fact that this book was written in 1925, almost a century before, where women in orthodox brahmin families were tied to shackles of traditions and male domination. Coming from a brahmin family, I can relate how big a deal it is to do what the protagonist did in the story. The intricate details of a woman's feeling, and how she becomes a slave to her heart was absorbing. Even if the story deals with intimacy, and an extra-marital aspect, the narration never seemed vulgar, or moving away from the essence of the story. By the end, it is an in explicable feeling that captivated me to the title of the story.
The thing that fascinated me the most was how Chalam garu had the guts to take a subject like this which is taboo a century ago and present it with no filters whatsoever.

truly revolutionary for a book that's written a century ago. Adultery. Incest. Cheating. Polygamy (multiple love interest not marriage. Sorry I don’t know the exact word). Rebel against society. Cultural commentary.. lot of the words on the book would burn the world if used today.. the struggle that the woman go through to be happy and keep others happy is portrayed with so much tension that you literally live through those moments. You feel for her. Frustrated for her stupidity. Sympathize for her helplessness. It’s short but deep and impactful.
ఇదేదో ఫెమినిజం లాగానే వుంది, మళ్ళీ పురుషాధిక్యతని మోస్తుంది.
