Jake Hanna is at the top of his game as a political consultant. His idealism sets him apart from his more jaded and compromised colleagues in the small universe of top advisors to our Nation's governing elite. Senator Bob McConnell, the seemingly perfect candidate, has put his ambitions in the hands of Hanna and his team of professionals. Their journey will face many obstacles, most of them erected by the nefarious opponents who wish to derail the Senator's candidacy and take power for themselves. No less than the future of the country is at stake. Then there are the suicides, and that fatal choking sensation... The Shadow Candidate is a story of the real politics in Washington D.C. Read it only if you are prepared to handle the truth.
When Rich told me that he had written a book and wanted me to read it,I didn't know what to expect. He's a bright guy, a dear fellow, and experienced in politics. Then I discovered that he is also a fine storyteller. He had spent three years writing it, but put it down in 2005. I got the mss in July, edited it, updated it, came up with a new title, designed the cover, and published it in early September. I've been in politics for decades myself, and I must say he has produced a book that is not only very close to the truth, but it is also a real page-turner. Plus, it will keep you thinking, after you've read it, about politics in America.
Written by a San Jose political consultant who was once a student of mine, The Shadow Candidate is not bad--or better than I expected. It's a fast, fun read with excellent and accurate details on politics and political campaigns, very credible. I confess I was doing a little mental editing as I read, but less than anticipated.
Very relevant today, or any day. Also, very relatable in current time and with current political figures, as I am sure it was meant to be. I am fairly sure that those that would not understand the rhetoric likely would not read this book to begin with.
Of course, I wrote it--so this review may be biased. . .just sayin' but Dick Spotswood of the Marin Independent Journal agrees. . .

"The Shadow Candidate," Fun Political Fiction
I rarely read fiction. MY nightstand is loaded with books on American history, politics plus assorted books on trains, ships and obscure topics. When I do find the rare fiction volume that interests me, it usually centers around politics or crime A combination of the two is ideal.
"The Shadow Candidate," veteran political consultant Rich Robinson's first volume of fiction, happily combines the two: an insider's view of big-time national politics along with the sordid aftermath of a Democratic presidential candidate's out-of-control libido. "The Shadow Candidate" is great fun and an easy read that keeps you on the seat of your pants. It's the perfect airplane companion to bring with you on your next trip to Washington.
Decent first novel. Not a fan of the paragraph structure. Also, the storyline felt a bit rushed - would've like to have seen more character development. Interested to see what the next novel holds...
