The Awakening is a mystery featuring vampires, demons and shape shifters. Every page reveals something new about the protagonist who has lost her memories. She doesn't know her own name or where she came from or what she is.

I loved the premise of this book. What a wonderful way to explore who you really are if you can't remember anything about yourself. The protagonist, who goes by Stephanie -- a name given to her by a new friend -- knows nothing about herself except that she is not an evil killer.

Yet the things she discovers about herself make her question everything.

She is a very engaging woman and never a disappointment. She stays true to herself, whoever she is, the entire novel.

My favorite character, however, was Boss. Enigmatic, model handsome vampire who never tells anyone his real name.

Everyone in this book has a secret side and sometimes the reader finds out, sometimes the reader is left puzzled.

The book ended in a place that left it perfect for a sequel. I will be angry if there's not one!

I bought this one when Mary was doing a signing at RT in Chicago. There had been good buzz and I remembered the name as I passed by her table. What a genuinely nice person; I liked her right off the bat. Not that her book needed it, but it definitely made me more eager to check it out.
We open with our heroine waking up at a crime scene. She's the only survivor of what appears to be a massacre of supernatural creatures. Oh, and her memory is gone. Completely wiped. Two men are there, not sure what to think of her and her involvement but they end up taking her home and together they follow the clues to find out what happened and who she is. Oh, and who she is is a doozy. Book 2 promises to be full of intrigue judging from where we left off.
The story is fast paced, well told and the supernatural lore was different enough to stop me from assuming I knew much of these characters. If you like vampires and demons, this one is a must.

My first thought when the cute man woke me was good, I have my clothes on. But where am I? When he asked my name, I couldn't remember.

Boss suggested I go with them to talk, my instinct said I could trust them. We walked through the dead bodies - burned, torn limb from limb, missing heads. Boss told Jonas to burn them all. But what about notifying their families of their death? He told me they already knew, but I didn't understand what he meant. When Jonas asked when I had last fed, I looked at him in surprise.

"You're not going to stand there and tell me you don't know you're a vampire," he said.

We were in Indianapolis. As we drove around, I felt a familiarity with my surroundings but couldn't remember anything specific. I was in the back seat of the car and could hear them talking, but their lips weren't moving. I could hear their thoughts. When I said I couldn't kill people, Jonas laughed. I could hear Jonas asking Boss what would happen if I couldn't remember.

All of a sudden I felt a sharp pain rip through my skill and my ears rang. Boss was doing it, trying to read my mind. He found nothing there, no memories. The pain lessened as he backed off, finally believing me. There should be something there, some memory he could find, even if I couldn't, but there wasn't. It was possible for a vampire to erase some memory, but not all. Demons can alter memories and reality, but not wipe out memories.

Boss admitted to being a vampire. I asked about Jonas, but Boss cut him off before he could answer. He held my hand to his chest, no heartbeat. But I had one. He told me I was a half-breed. So I was only half dead. That was why I needed warm blood and human food. Boss could think of no one, or no reason for someone to wipe my memories. Whoever did do it, couldn't be human. As Jonas and Boss talked, they mentioned other breeds, werewolves, demons, fae, shifters, warlocks.....

When I held my stomach while it was cramping, I felt a bulge in my skirt. I reached in my pocket and found two pieces of paper. Before I could see what they were, Boss grabbed them out of my hand. They were my clues. As we fought over them, they blew out the window. We chased them in the wind and finally caught them. One was a receipt to a bookstore. Still no memory.

The other paper was a pawn shop receipt. But if I hocked something, where was the money and what did I pawn? Boss kept my papers. He also found my knife when we got back in the car. It had fallen out of my boot. The handle was made from gold and had two initials, S and B, and was poisoned. Boss told me, if it belonged to me, the poison wouldn't affect me.

Boss and Jonas worked for the Worldwide Organization of Peace and Protection. His job was to monitor the clans and make sure no one species dominated. We agreed to work together to find out who I was and who killed all those people, those creatures. I knew I wasn't a killer. I didn't drink blood and I didn't have fangs. We figured someone had been looking for me and would do whatever they had to do to get me back. How did they lose me?

We went to the pawn shop, but it seemed to present more questions than answers. I had pawned a demon watch. It tells time in Hell and on earth. It could open a portal between the two worlds.

When the question came up, was I part vampire and part demon, Boss said that it was not possible. He said Tabby may be able to help. She was a Shape-shifter and was living with him and Jonas.

It was decided I needed to test my skills and Tabby would be the perfect sparring partner. When I shifted to mist, I had the not so bright idea to tease Boss. He not only attacked me, he called me an abomination and told me to get out. He thought I was a freak, thought me dangerous. Jonas saw me as a treasure, one of a kind. If Boss made me go, Tabby and Jonas said they would go with me.

Tabby suggested we go shopping and do girl things. We were having a good time, until I noticed the same guy appeared wherever we went. Tabby couldn't see him, so I told Jonas about him over the phone. He wanted us home, now. Tabby went off to finish the shopping and I waited near the entrance.

Benny chose that moment to introduce himself. He knew I was a half-breed. He was an angel. He told me I needed to remember soon, Tabby's life was in danger. Now I was human, vampire, demon and angel.

We went to the book store listed on the receipt. While there I had a flash of memory. I had been writing in a journal and there was a strong smell of coffee. Boss picked another memory. I had been writing in a journal and was going to mail it. That was four days ago. It should have arrived. What would the journal contain? Would it help answer all our questions?

While we were surfing the internet, a hacker began hunting for our IP address. Boss had us grabbing computers and weapons. Tabby was throwing bags of clothes and stacks of cash. Boss and I jumped in the SUV, Jonas and Tabby followed behind us. Gargumen were hunting us, so we split up, agreeing to meet up later.

What was up with Senator Galuzzi, presidential candidate, and Allison? Why did our internet search of them trigger such a hunt? On top of all that, Benny had told me I needed to remember, that Tabby was in danger and I could save her. From what?

5 STARS - Would Buy It For Them (lol)

It caught my interest from the beginning. Amnesia. But as the story progressed, I found myself reading faster and faster. The book was full of mystery and suspense.

The plot was going in several directions, but they do come together.

At times I forgot the characters weren't human. I fell in love with Jonas and Tabby was wonderful. They didn't even know Stephanie, but would leave everything to protect her, to help her.

Stephanie wanted to know all the answers. She felt human and had no desire to do anyone any harm, until they threatened her new-found friends. She would do whatever it took to protect them all, even Boss.

Stephanie couldn't always understand why Boss could be so cold and demanding. Guess she kept forgetting that he was a vampire. Isn't that how they are? Yet, he took care of and protected Jonas and Tabby.

Then, boom it was over. I read the last page. Oh no, now what? I didn't want it to end. I am really curious to see where this story will go. Book II: Quest came out October 8, 2012.

I received this book in return for an hones and unbiased review.

Wow! Imagine awakening surrounded by dead, burning bodies and two strange men. Now imagine having ZERO CLUE as to who you are or how you ended up there. What a thrill ride. Within minutes of waking up "Stephanie " learns she has no memory, is surrounded bydeath, and oh yes... her two mysterious heroes claim she's a VAMPIRE?!?! Holy Hannah... Vampires are real?! Check that.... She also learns so are demons, werewolves, gargoyles, angels and more... What the heck is going on and why can't she remember anything? Even when the head vampire aka Boss tries to peer into her memories he comes up with bubkus. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. If the Almighty vampire can't gleen any information from her mind how the heck was she supposed to figure anything out? At least Boss and Jonas seem to be trying to help. So begins the magical mystery tour of trying to learn who she is. To say it's the start of MANY shocking revelations would be an understatement . I loved this story as it's so NOT your typical paranormal book. Oodles of mystery, back stabbing, romance, and many surprises grace these pages.... And I for one cannot wait to see what happens next. What does she end up being... For one thing is for certain... After surviving what she did, she's definitely. NOT human.

This is my first book from Mary and for sure not the last one!

This book start with the eathquacke, than slow down a little and finally speed up again. I loved the idea of losing memories or so, it was really well written - i felt bad about it thought whole book.
All characters have good and bad side, althought there are some that emphesize only one part of it.
The concept of płot was new for me - nd that not happen very often.

I recommend it to people who like: PNR, Urban fantasy, kick-ass women, all kind of creatures mixed in one world!

*I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book*

I loved this book. There are all kinds of supernatural creatures. The MC is an interesting one herself but I will not spill the beans. You will need to read the book to find out. The whole book is one huge mystery. One event raises questions and each question answered adds more questions. The book left off leaving room for a sequel and I have every intention of reading book 2 as soon as I can. I am curious and want to find some answers to the questions that are still lingering.

All the twists and turns a demon lawyer could craft. There are so many layers and levels in here, it's easy to immerse yourself in the story. All of the characters are interesting with unique skills and vulnerabilities. If friends are the family you chose, I love the "family" at the heart of this story. I'm captivated by the puzzle now and can't wait to read the next book to find out more.

Fantastic Story

If u like stories that feature others such as angels, demons, werewolves, etc. and a mystery then u have found your next book. The book starts with our heroine being aware she doesn’t know who she is and that there are 30 dead werewolfs from several packs in the pit burning. What follows is her journey to discover who and what she is.

The Awakening by Mary Abshire is the first book in the Project Eve series. It starts with a very attention getting scene: a young woman in found at a dump near Indianapolis, surrounded by representatives from every race of paranormals. There's only one problem. They are all dead, and the young woman can't remember even her name, not to mention what happened at the dump. The only thing that is clear is that something important is going on. The young woman is taken in by Boss, one of the oldest vampires alive, and his entourage: a human named Jonas, and a cat shifter named Tabby. Boss, who is known by everyone as Boss because he won't tell anyone his name, is an investigator with WWOPP, The World Wide Organization Of Peace and Protection. He wants to find out what happened at the dump, as well as who or what the young woman is. Because she has a poisoned knife in her possession with the initials SB engraved on it, they decide to call her Stephanie. Thus begins an action packed book full of paranormal creatures, intrigue, corruption and confusion for Stephanie, because her blood tests show that she is a one of a kind paranormal being. As the team races to find out who she is and how she came into being, they have to team up with a high ranking demon, which puts everyone on edge. Will they find out who Stephanie really is before whoever is after her succeeds in finding and killing her?

This book was very interesting. I couldn't put it down. It is well written, both in writing style and in editing. I'm a stickler for spelling, grammar and punctuation, and I found few if any mistakes. All of the characters are well developed. It was so easy to read, and I was very sympathetic towards "Stephanie" because she couldn't remember anything before she was found. She was at the mercy of the group that found her, because she has nothing but the clothes on her back and a mind full of questions. It bothered me a little that throughout the book, she immediately trusted some characters, such as Boss and his "family" as well as a werewolf cop and an angel that kept appearing. That seemed a little strange to me. There were paranormal creatures in this book that I'd never heard of, such as garumen -a cross between gargoyles and humans. If course these were some of the bad guys, and they fit the niche of being ugly and evil. I truly loved the twists that I didn't see coming, and although I usually don't like mysteries, this one just grabs your attention and won't let go. It is a cliffhanger, because it's the first book in a series, but it's not one of those cliffhangers where two people are badly injured and one of them dies and you have to figure it out. It's more along the lines of part of the mystery being solved, and we'll read about the rest of the story in another book. I highly recommend this book to you if you are interested in paranormal or mystery books. It would be appropriate for older teens to adults due to language, violence, and adult situations.

I voluntarily requested a free copy of this book from the author with the intention of writing an honest review, which I have done here.

WOW! This book was absolutely amazing! I loved the way Boss and Jonas rescued and took in SB when they had no idea who she was, where she came from, or how she was the only survivor in a pile of dead bodies AND to top it all off...she had no idea either. The only way she had any clue to her real identity is from the dagger that was in her boot and some receipts that were in her pockets. As they try to find out who she is, they learn some odd things about her, like she isn't only human. She is a half-breed of human and vampire...or so they think. The more they learn about her and "study" her, the more they learn that she is much more than just a half-breed human/vampire. She is like no other in the world! She has other mixtures too in her DNA that make her a wonderful and rare person to Jonas (the human/blood donor to Boss) and make her an abomination to Boss (the very old vampire). When they take her in and she meets Tabby, a shape shifter, Tabby takes a liking to her too. The concern comes when they find out she is part Demon also. How can they all be safe with her? Can they just ditch her though after seeing how she doesn't have a clue about anything about herself? How will she survive if they do? Can lust from Boss be a bad thing for SB to be grateful for when it comes? What could be so bad about lusting with Boss? Will SB ever figure out who she really is, if she is dangerous to others, and why she had her memory taken from her? Will her new friends risk their safety by helping her figure it all out?

I could not get enough of this book. I was hooked from page one when Jonas and Boss found SB. The plot is great and very well written with great detail. The characters were amazingly developed and very easy to come to love...or hate...however you chose to roll. I think my favorite character was...all of them. I just can't pick one, they all had things that intrigued me and made me love them for the character they were. Boss is the strong, but mysterious type, who tries to hide emotions. Jonas is the "nice guy" type that just wants to help SB and is nice to look at too. Tabby is the cute, funny, female friend who we all like to spend time with because she's just like that. Tabby also happens to be a shape shifter who prefers to be a tabby cat. And SB is the lost soul searching to find out who she really is and why she is the way she is, but doesn't want to put her new friends in danger. As you follow SB and the gang toward the answers to all her/their/and your questions a reader just gets caught up in it all. Also, the hot and steamy scenes are pretty intense too and make you go....wow. :-) If you are a fantasy reader or one who likes the supernatural twist to books, this is very much the book for you! It was a great read for me and had twists and turns in it to make it that much more wonderful. It's a MUST READ!!

Imagine being awakened by a stranger and realizing that you have no knowledge of who you are or why you are lying in a dump surrounded by dead bodies. Then imagine you find out that you are a half breed and the people around you are vampires, shifters, demons, angels and human. That’s what happened to our main character, who could not recall anything that had happened to her in the last few days. Boss, the vampire who found her and woke her up along with his human partner Jonas set out to solve the mystery of who she was.

From the moment I opened the book this story had me captivated. The characters were interesting and the mystery surrounding the girl Jonas named ‘Stephanie’ had me hoping that she was as innocent as she appeared to be. Even she didn't know if she was innocent although she kept saying she wasn't a killer. From the beginning of this story to the end it added layer upon layer to Stephanie’s character which made her more interesting and endearing.

The author Mary Abshire reached out and grabbed me from the start and took me on a ride that was filled with twists, turns and surprises. Boss was a no-nonsense kind of guy. He was dark and brooding but cared about the people in his charge, while Jonas, who was the complete opposite of Boss, acted as a buffer between Boss and Stephanie. The supporting characters in the book like Tabby the shape shifting cat and Jackson the hot werewolf as well as Sal the demon were woven in seamlessly, and I understood the part each of them played in Stephanie’s life.

It took me two hours to finish this book and when I was done, even though I was smiling, I wanted more. I look forward to reading the next book in what I’m sure will be a series since many questions were left unanswered.

I received a copy of The Awakening from the Basically Books group on Goodreads so thanks to the author and the mods for making this available. The heroine is woken up by two strangers as she lay in the dump, she has no idea who she is, or anything about herself other than a couple receipts and a knife with the initials SB. She is also surrounded by 30 dead bodies of vamps, weres, demons and the only thing she knows for sure is that she is not a murderer, that's the start of a really sucky day for SB.

The Awakening has all kinds of supernatural creatures weres, vamps, demons and angels and as "Stephanie" encounters each group they all recognize something in here. She is a unique creature in that she's a little bit of everything and who she is and how she came to be is a mystery that Stephanie and crew must solve to help her regain her memories.

I liked "Stephanie" as a character, she had strength after everything was taken from her. I liked the supporting cast especially the hot werewolf, I didn't much like the character of Boss. The dark brooding vampire has been done to death and he just annoyed me, he calls Stephanie an abomination one minute then is doing her less than 24 hrs later. The plot is a pretty straight forward mystery, who is Stephanie and who killed all the supernatural creatures found in the dump. There is lots of action to keep turning the pages and I will read the next book...there's better be a next book.

What the hell???

Imagine waking up with 3o dead bodies around you, not only that but you don't remember what happened or who you are. Oh man I  would personally freak out and not trust anyone. SB though, she seems to be able to judge people still. So when Boss a vampire and Jonas his donor and friend find her and offer to help. With them comes Tabby a shifter and happy woman who takes to SB straight away. These three have such a close family thing going on, even  Boss who can be harsh at times. So together they help her try to find out who and what she is, but also what happened to cause 30 dead bodies of different breeds.
I so loved and got caught up with these people. SB finding out something different about herself and dealing with it? Wow she handles it so well. Even at times when not so good. How she knows to trust and not to trust aswel is pretty amazing, she has good senses. But with who she is, it is understandable. Her relationship with Boss is a little tricky and sometime hurtful but they work. Jonas straight way defends SB and knows part of what she is and also helps and encourages her with the rest.  Tabby, so lovely she in away has innocence about her and you can't help but want to protect her. Along the way SB meets others some she doesn't like and trust and some? Well are HOT.
Absolutely loved this and can't wait to read more.

I voluntarily agreed to read this book for my honest review and I loved it! Add a little mystery, a half breed, vampires and many others and what do you get? A kick ass book, that's what! I love Mary Abshire's work its amazing! This book is amazing, following a half breed trying to find out her identity and past with the help of friends. It leads to a bunch of different creatures and a lot of corruption! I can't wait to read and see how this story unfolds! Another great book!

A girl with amnesia and some surprising abilities finds allies in unlikely places. And just in time, she is going to need them.

The Awakening has a great plot line. A one of a kind girl survives a mass killing but has no memories. You are taken along for the ride as she tries to navigate the different breeds of supernatural beings, only to keep discovering she has something in common with nearly all of them.

The characters are well written. Boss, the protector vampire who you will suspect has many deep dark secrets. Tabby and Jonas, they almost feel like siblings and stick up for our nameless girl when she has nothing. Sal, one of the...villains? Benny and many more. They all suck you into the world so when you reach the end you will want to know what happens next.

The pace was a little slow, a perfect read for lunch breaks or waiting at a doctors office. It is the questions that keep you coming back, it makes you just have to know.

I was intrigued about the synopsis of this novel. She didn’t know her name and only owns to receipt and a dagger with the initials 'SB'. I wasn’t into this book very much though. It was interesting and fairly good. I liked it but it wasn’t amazing. I liked that she was half human, vampire, demon and angel. It was intriguing. I was looking forward to what would happen. I didn’t like the other side of Shelley. She barely knew Boss but they did it anyway and she would like to do it with Jackson. She was attracted to Jason and she has a secret ancient vampire lover. Bang all the boys around why don’t you? I was a bit pissed off at that. But the plot makes up for it. I would definitely want to read the sequel.

This was seriously good, it had all my favourites in it; werewolves, vampires, demons and angels! I had
some major love for this book. it had me clinging on to the very end, questions swirling round in my head which by the end were half answered and half still remaining. It's like she gives you some answers so you don't get to crazy waiting for the next book but she leaves some unanswered to get you to read the next book. It's genius. I loved the way this story was crafted and led. I love her little visions or flashbacks. I loved everything. I gave it 4 stars because I think there's some questions we should have had answered like, how old she was and stuff but other than that, WOWZA! Read this book people!

Waking among 30 dead bodies was traumatic enough for the main character ‘SB’; discovering what she was over and over again was... actually awesome as time went on. One feature I liked was the family like feeling among SB and the characters who found/helped her: Boss, Jonas and Tabby. The storyline in this book is very strong. I was very pleasantly surprised to find the intriguing aspects of the story woven together so well. I love the multiple paranormal creatures that exist in this story as well. I strongly recommend this story to readers of the various genres. This author has managed to write an excellent story. The Awakening is the first part of the Project Eve series. I can't wait to read the continuing adventure. I received a copy of this book in return for an honest review.

I would like to thank the author for giving me this book for an honest review. The story is great and keeps you guessing at what is to come. I really like SB, she awakened in the mist of dead bodies, with no idea who she is and only has two receipts on her and a wicked dagger with the initials SB. I find the character very interesting and Boss and Jonas are investigating what happened and in the process hopefully find out who SB is and if she was involved in the deaths or not. I am looking forward to reading the next book to find out what happens next.

4.5 Close to perfection for me. I absolutely love the fact that it involves several paranormal genres. It is told from the leads point of view, and well done. Angels, Demons, Werewolf, Vampire, half breeds, Gargoyles and for me....the best is suspense with mystery thrown in. Little tidbits were dropped through out. There was resolution for the main plot in the story.i.e. what is her name? Leaving you wanting more. Thank you Mary Abshire for the opportunity to read and review this book. Time for "retribution" in "The Quest"

The story sounds intriguing but after reading the first couple of chapters in the sample, i felt the writing was very amateurish and although i can sometimes overlook this, it kept interupting my enjoyment of the story as instead of getting lost in it, i was coming 'out' of it every time i noticed something annoying...

I MAY decide to read this in future but i would need to be in the right mood.

A little rough, and I think I would have enjoyed this more if the story wasn't all over the place. The concept, and what I think the writer was trying to do seemed intresting enough. Ended very abruptly, so there will be more with these characters and this world. Depending on the price and premise of next book, I may or may not read.

Very well written and such an interesting story. The Awakening is different from anything I've read in the paranormal genre and I enjoyed every bit of it. I was drawn in from the beginning and couldn't put it down. I don't want to give spoilers, so I'll just say that I can't wait to see what happens in book 2!

The plot was good. I really liked how all paranormal things is evident into one. I believe that it's a wonderful start for a series. But, I still think there's something missing.
But, I liked it. Will be reading the next when it comes out.

I'm looking forward to the next book in the series. Well written, not overly dramatic or unrealistic yet still dealing with unrealistic characters. I liked it. Can't wait to find out what happens next.
