About the author

Paul Franklin Dano is an American actor. He began his career on Broadway. He won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Debut Performance for his role in L.I.E. (2001) and gained wider recognition for playing a troubled teenager in Little Miss Sunshine (2006). For playing identical twins in Paul Thomas Anderson's period drama There Will Be Blood (2007), he was nominated for the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Dano had critically acclaimed roles in 12 Years a Slave and Prisoners (both 2013). For his portrayal of Beach Boys founder Brian Wilson in Love & Mercy (2014), he earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He played The Riddler in The Batman and a caring father in The Fabelmans (both 2022), receiving a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination for the latter.

Dano made his directorial debut with the drama film Wildlife (2018), based on the novel by Richard Ford; he co-wrote its screenplay with his partner, Zoe Kazan. Also in 2018, he starred as a convicted murderer in the Showtime miniseries Escape at Dannemora, for which he received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor. Dano has also written the comic book The Riddler: Year One (2022).

Dano has an exceptional understanding of his character. Not just his motivations, but the logic and madness, too. He captures the tone of the movie and of Gotham in a corporate way we don't typically see, and how Batman might inspire people in the wrong way, even if they think it's right.

this one didn’t have as much about eddie’s mental illness, it was more centred on his work/more “detective-y” but regardless it was very good! i really like his idolisation of batman, it’s very interesting seeing his obsession develop slowly.. and cool seeing him slowly regard himself as a saviour of gotham like in the film. also those batman panels!!! he looks amazing, the art is phenomenal and the writing is amazing

Discoveries

I really could get lost in this version of Gotham. It feels over the top grounded - like a solid crime story. I enjoy being guided to feel sorry for Edward and cheering whenever he makes a step forward in his investigation because we already know the outcome...While it's a really entertaining classic crime story with incredible visuals (reminds me of "Batman: Reptilian") a small star discount for being repetitive in this one (I think a piece doesn't fit but I'm not sure yet - please tell me once more) 4/5

chapter 2: people lie—numbers don’t
now if i said this issue brought me to tears, what then… paul dano definitely KNOWS his character, and the illustration by stevan subic is amazing. THAT one specific page of his growth from infantry to an adult, questioning the pain he’s endured & further, his purpose in life, IN THE SHAPE OF A QUESTION MARK … that was equally brilliant as it was haunting. i quite enjoy how the writing and illustrations don’t shy away at all from depicting the severe illness of this man like, it just makes me understand his character in the film that much more.
great follow up to the first, and hope the wait isn’t as long for the next.

Maybe 3.5 stars. The tension definitely ratchets up in this one, and Nashton's first glimpse at Batman is pretty neat, but I'm not a fan of the disturbing monster images, though I assume they're a symptom of his slipping from reality. This is one dark book, that's for sure.
