The Black Mist is book one in the Jarrajarra series and is a gripping crime mystery by Geoff Davis, set in the unique backdrop of the high-country town of Jarrajarra, where Constable Chris Taylor runs a small police station. Usually, this isolated town is quiet and suited Constable Chris Taylor after his military career. However, someone did not agree and pushed Constable Chris Taylor into investigating three murders and dirty cops. Will Constable Chris Taylor find the answers, or will it be his last case? The readers of The Black Mist will continue to follow Constable Chris Taylor to discover what happens.
Discovering this fantastic Australian Crime Mystery, The Black Mist, was a true delight. From the very first page, I engaged in the story and the characters, from the first page and I couldn't put it down until I reached the last page. I am confident other crime mystery enthusiasts will share my enthusiasm for this captivating read. I love Geoff Davis's portrayal of his characters and how they intertwine throughout this book. The Black Mist is well-written and researched. I like Geoff Davis's description of the settings of The Black Mist, which allowed me to imagine being part of the book's plot.
The Black Mist's readers will learn about the corruption caused by the drug industry in Australia and its consequences for small towns. They will also understand the role of small township law enforcement officers.

Entertaining from the first page to the last, this book was a big, pleasant surprise to me. Expecting it to be a ‘serious’ Aussie rural crime fiction, this turned out to be so much more! Action-packed and full of self-deprecating humours, it was so much fun.
Unlike a lot of the ‘chosen one’ main male characters in a lot of action books and movies, Chris Taylor was far from perfect. Constantly making fun of himself, he didn’t have a shred of ego in him. I really enjoyed getting to know his character slowly through his work solving cases. He really grew on me, with every single creative, somewhat-borderline problem-solving he did.
This was easily one of the best Aussie rural crime I’d ever read, and it is so under-hyped. If you’re a crime fiction fan, please do yourself a favour and pick this up! I’m running to pick up the sequel soon!
wow Geoff, I absolutely loved this book, humorous, mystery, murder, kept me on the edge not wanting to put it down, looking forward to starting PROVOCATION (that will be tomorrow 😊) was great to meet you at Queen Victoria Market 23rd August & soo glad my friend & I bought both your books, thank you for signing them. Black Mist by Geoff Davies is a captivating crime and mystery novel that deftly blends suspense with humor, making for a thoroughly engaging read. Set in a small, quirky town, the story follows a police officer tasked with investigating the murders of three victims. What sets this novel apart, however, isn't just the intriguing mystery, but the vivid, colorful characters that populate the town and the sharp, witty writing that pulls you right into the action.
The central character, the down-to-earth and honest police officer, is both relatable and refreshingly straightforward. His unique approach to solving crimes—along with his ability to connect with the diverse, often eccentric, residents of the town—adds a rich layer of depth to the story. He’s not just a police officer solving puzzles; he’s someone who understands the people around him, and that makes the narrative feel grounded and personal, despite the unusual crimes at its core.
One of the standout features of Black Mist is its cast of characters. The town is filled with brilliant and memorable individuals, each with their own quirks and charm. These characters not only contribute to the mystery’s complexity but also add humor and warmth to the otherwise tense atmosphere. The author's skillful character development ensures that you’re not just following the investigation, but are genuinely invested in the lives of the people involved.
Davies' writing style is another highlight—fast-paced and compelling, with enough humor to balance out the darker aspects of the story. I found myself hooked from the very first page and couldn't put the book down. The pacing is spot-on, keeping the tension high while still allowing moments of levity that make the characters' interactions feel authentic and enjoyable.
In conclusion, Black Mist is a brilliant mix of crime, mystery, and humor, with memorable characters that make the story come alive. If you're a fan of character-driven mysteries with a good dose of wit and charm, I highly recommend this book. It's an absolute page-turner that will keep you hooked until the very end.
Grit, Wit, and Outback Intrigue: The Perfect Dose of Aussie Crime
A quiet town in outback Victoria, an honest local cop, and three mysterious dead bodies—it's the classic Australian crime fiction setup, but delivered with a unique and masterful blend of sharp wit, deep-seated grit, and genuinely dark humour. This is a genuinely gripping read with impressive originality. The characters are layered, the plot is tight, and the tone is unmistakably Australian. Senior Constable Chris Taylor, the sole officer in Jarrajarra, initially seems out of his depth. However, he quickly proves to be far sharper than the slick, self-important Melbourne detectives sent to take over the case. This territorial clash within the police force, intensified by the involvement of his Wodonga-based boss, creates a compelling, power-charged tension and a race for clues.
Taylor partners with his unofficial, yet highly efficient, civilian sidekick, Barney, who is a wonderfully lovable character. Barney, a total police wannabe, often mans the small Jarrajarra police office and always manages to handle the important logistics while Chris lands himself in increasingly dangerous situations. Together, they discover that the true motivations in Jarrajarra run much deeper than the bikie gang that has recently rolled into town.
The novel is perfectly balanced by Taylor’s self-deprecating inner monologue, which provides consistent, genuine comedic highlights. The laughs extend throughout the story, courtesy of the wonderfully developed supporting cast, including the emergency and hospital staff—where Barney’s girlfriend, Wendy, works. This precision in character work gives the town a tangible, "lived-in" feel, lending the mystery a substantial emotional depth that elevates it beyond a simple whodunit.
Ultimately, this is a gritty tale wrapped in outback charm, masterfully blending fast-paced mystery, insightful character study, and authentic Aussie banter. The ending is satisfying and expertly delivered. Highly recommended for any fan of crime fiction looking for a story with both heart and unforgettable humour.
I'm now eager to dive into the second installment of this debut series.
What a cracker! Propulsive, fast paced and action packed, Geoff Davis certainly knows how to write a page turning thriller.
Set in the remote fictional town of Jarrajarra, The Black Mist is full of dark humour and surprise twists. When former SASR soldier, Chris Taylor, was posted to the one man police station in this small town, he was looking forward to the quiet. However, with three dead bodies, his peace is shattered. As the investigation begins to uncover lies, drug dealing and police corruption, will Chris be dragged into the violence, or can he find the killer before it’s too late?
I loved this book! Chris Taylor is an engaging MC with a great backstory and his rapport with the community he polices was brilliant. I loved getting to know all the local identities, from Barney, the citizen police assistant, who probably knows more about police procedure than Chris. To the Farrell family, who seem to be involved in every aspect of the town. I won’t say too much more as this is a book to go into without knowing too much so you too can be floored by the reveals. Just when you think everything is resolved, think again.
I cannot wait to revisit this town and its people in Geoff’s second book, Provocation.
The Black Mist is a fast-paced action adventure novel which leaves the reader on the edge of his/her seat. It doesn’t just have an exciting climax – it is an adrenalin rush all the way through!
Chris Taylor is the only policeman in a small country town and he usually enjoys the quiet life. However, when three murders take place in his locality, his peaceful life becomes a thing of the past. Chris must work his way through the crime scene and work out who is telling the truth and who isn’t.
If you’re looking for an entertaining action adventure story, then this book is definitely for you. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series - Provocation.
A highly enjoyable read with a pleasantly complex plot and a few nice twists ans turns. An aussie noir which is finally not dominated by endless descriptions of the outback: this is a merit I want to acknowledge upfront. The weak side of the novel are its characters, a little cliched; as for the protagonist, clearly the author didn't want to go down the route of the flawed hero, but it probably pushed it a trifle too much on the white knight side: the dude is handsome, super-athletic, very smart, ruthless with the baddies but compassionate with the goodies, has a great sense of humour and whatnot. But that remained quite acceptable to me in the context of a rather strong debut novel.
So many twists and turns. Full concentration needed for this one to fully grasp all the characters. There was obviously a few main characters that featured pretty much in every scene but there was so many back up characters, it was a little hard to keep track of if not concentrating. Maybe that’s just me, tend to read very quickly but had to go back sometimes to get the timeline right. Kept me engaged and I got to really like the towns cop. All the townspeople were likeable, and I was really invested in some of the main suspects, hoping they were innocent! I’ve deliberately not mentioned any names so as not to inadvertently drop any spoilers.
What a fabulous book. The MC of Chris is very likeable. And the dry humor and sardonic asides are hilarious. The secondary characters are also interesting and add to the overall story.
As a first book—it was excellent. One of the things I noticed was that there weren’t many contractions used. And you need these to give it a good flow. I’m instead I am etc.
Not only was the character of Chris super likeable—the murder mystery had a great twist to it that I didn’t pick who the murderer was at all. Very clever.
I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series. And love that it’s set in Oz.
Continuing my run of ausie noir detective/cop series'. I loved the humour in this book (yes in a grimy murder mystery). The main characters inner and outer dialogue had my sniggering at the most inappropriate moments. The quirky little town of Jarrajarra was perfect, it belies the horrific nature of the crimes that were committed. The characters were so well described and rounded out. Well written, highly recommend.
A great book set in a country town in Victoria Australia. The vernacular is so true you can hear the words in your head. The feeling of small town living, knowing everyone, and still having to be the police is fascinating. Highly recommend and I hope to read the next book.
I loved the fresh, witty dialogue of the central character, Chris, a small town cop with an ex-military past. It was all very "blokey" , but all the more realistic for that. Lots of suspense, lots of action; quite a bit of blood and guts with lashings of humour interspersed. Definitely on the look out for the next one!
Loved this book! Unassuming first person narration from the small outback police constable who initially seems far too laid back. It slowly dawns on you that he is in fact a rather special kind of hero as the pace builds and he takes on the baddies! Great characterisation and story. Can’t wait for the next one!
Very readable, a slight flavour of Peter Corris style although this is rural; crime with droll Aussie dialogue ; humour not overdone mostly and characters are well drawn and geography of town Jarrajarra and surrounds is clearly described.. detective Chris Taylor is a welcome addition to the growing crowd of Aussie rural crime players.
A fun book to read while on holiday in Australia. I enjoyed the story but the dialogue was incredibly annoying, in that the author didn’t use contractions . No one speaks like that in real life. It made the dialogue unnatural and robotic. Also, there were grammatical errors and some names were mixed up. The book was good, but could really benefit from some good editing.
What A Read! For a book I just happened to be lucky enough to pick up… to not being able to put it down! What a gripping tale with turns i never saw coming. I absolutely cannot wait to read the third book by Geoff! I’ll be starting the second in no time…. i wonder what’s going to happen next in JarraJarra……
I haven’t written a book review before. But I really enjoyed this book. I bought The Black Mist at the Torquay Market and also Provocation, really looking forward to reading it as well. The characters were very credible and the story line kept you very interested. I didn’t want to put it down. For a first book I think Geoff Davis has done an excellent job.
I love reading Aussie books it takes me back home this one is compulsive reading I couldn’t put it down it’s on a par with Jane harpers book I really loved it and felt like I was there please have another soon can’t wait to read more thanks
This would be the best Australian murder mystery I have ever read…I know that’s a big call but it has everything. Real dialogue, true to life characters that became my friends, it made me laugh out loud at times and scared me too. It flowed beautifully and I read every word, which is unusual for me. I’m often a skimmer because writers can bore me…. This author should be world famous and hopefully he will. I can’t wait for his next book.
I loved the way the story all came together, and the characters were strong but not overbearing. I look forward to the next book, which hopefully, won't be too long a wait.
What a story?! This is a really riveting read with such dark comedy mixed in and sarcasm. The characters are truly amazingly put together and easy to imagine the relationships within the story. PLEASE give us MORE!!!
Just finished this terrific novel of Australian crime and police drama. Thoroughly enjoyed turning every page. I was lucky to meet Geoff personally and he was as delightful to talk to as it was to read this book. Next please....
Loved this book, the style of writing and the characters. Great story line full of action ,mystery and top aussie humour. Can't wait for his next book.
