Dark Secrets #1.1

Tears of the Broken

Rate this book
Book no longer in print. Please see "Dark Secrets" by A.M. Hudson for this book and The Knight of the Rose, now combined.

"Powerfully integrated vampire series."

An epic romantic fantasy. The entire series is a journey to watch one girl grow and find that love is something you fight for, not a gift you can take for granted, combined with a sexy vampire and a deeper, darker mystery lurking underneath it all.

Vampires do not care about the myths people believe. They feed on humans, walk in the daylight, and no, they certainly do not sparkle. The only problem is, they don't usually fall in love with their food, either. But David Knight is about to discover that love knows nothing of morals or laws.

When Ara-Rose learns the truth about her boyfriend, David, she will be forced into a world of death and secrecy. Living each day on a path lit by predictability, Ara had never imagined such nightmares could exist. Now, her fate is measured by a choice between eternal love and a normal life, a decision she only has until the end of the summer to make.

Let me warn you right from the top that this is going to be a pretty gushy review. But I won't apologize for that! Tears of the Broken is my type of book! Yes, I'm a sucker for romance and this book is full of it! Yes, I love paranormal and this book has that as well. I admit to having the biggest, cheesiest grin on my face for a lot of the time as I was reading this. It was just like my favourite chocolate. You know how you just want to savour it so that it lasts longer, but you just cant... You have to have it all at once! That's how I was reading Tears of the Broken. I kept looking at how many pages I had left and telling myself to slow down but I just couldn't do it!!

A. M. Hudson has done an amazing job of capturing the essence of a teenage girl in Ara- Rose. From suffering unspeakable tragedy through to experiencing the flush of falling in love. Her writing style is so easy to read and she makes you feel as if you are right there in the pages of the book.

What I loved most about this book.....
1. THE COVER: It's gorgeous!! So many vampire books use black and red colouring, but I just love the blues in this. And once you've read the book you will understand the significance of the swing hanging from the tree.
2. ARA-ROSE: I adored her character!! She is vulnerable and fragile, but at the same time she is strong and sassy. She is real!! You can feel everything that she is experiencing!!
3. DAVID KNIGHT: I have 2 hands in the air proudly admitting to the fact that I have Knight Fever!! (To know what that is, you're just gonna have to read the book).... He is loving and protective and caring and hot and yummy and...... Ok, you get the picture!!!

Now there will be some people who will make the Twilight comparisons (Human falls in love with the vampire) and I hate to even bring it up.... But to be quite honest, you could probably make some comparisons with any vampire book. But the differences far outweigh any similarities. The experiences of Ara and David are very different to anything in Twilight. So to me that's where the comparisons end!! They really are very different books!!

Giving Tears of the Broken 5/5 doesn't even come close to telling you how much I loved this book. In all honesty this could quite possibly go down as the best book I have read in 2011!!

A huge 5/5

This is a terrible book. Absolutely awful. For one, new girl meets vampire boy, hmm sound familiar? The author ha clearly tried to change a few things to make it different from twilight but it's essentially The same.

Stories where the main character keeps hinting at some terrible event that happened in the past are frustrating, and this is what happens repeatedly in this book.

The main character is even more sullen and unlikeable than Bella, if that's possible, and it really seems like the author does not have enough experience with genuine human interactions. Ara gives David a long lingering look in the hallway after bumping into him, and he's embarrassed? The WHOLE SCHOOL is talking about it? In real life I doubt anyone would even notice, let alone care that she LOOKED at him.

In all honesty this person has a flair for words, but there is just no realism to this story and no originality. I can only assume they are very young, in which case they have a huge potential and I encourage them to keep trying.

I really loved this book for a couple of reasons. First – it had some really beautiful writing. In fact, I even highlighted one passage and sent it to a friend exclaiming how that is what the perfect guy should say. And second, it actually made me cry!

You start off with a brief introduction to Ara in a short prologue. As soon as I read the prologue, I was excited. Amara-Rose was born lifeless, and brought to life when her father took her in his arms. The imagery was sad, beautiful, and happy all at once. It definitely had me eager to see what was in store.

Jump forward to present day. Amara-Rose is now going to go by the name Ara, and she is starting a new school after moving in with her father. Her family is a step-family now, yet they all seem to be close and get along well.

Her “welcome wagon” type tour buddy (who turns into a friend), Emily, informs her excitedly that she has the one and only David Knight in her first class. And as soon as Ara lays eyes on David, well, her heart was lost. Can’t say I blame the girl! David is young, beautiful, and kind. And there is so much more than what meets the eye.

“Suelment quand je parle avec mon coeur”

And that’s just the first line that swept me off my feet. And unless you speak French, you will have to Google it just as I did.

“Do you have any idea what you did to me today?” David edged a little closer. My head moved in a silent no, while my eyes dodged his. “Ara, when you looked at me that way—with those stunning, soulful, blue eyes of yours—you tunnelled right into me. You reached a part of me that has never been touched. Ever. I almost fell into a thousand pieces on the floor. I—”He looked away as my eyes met his. “I knew, from that moment on, you were mine.”

And that is what made me email my friend. I mean seriously, how dreamily perfect is it to have the guy of your dreams say something entirely so romantic? It’s lines like this throughout the book that got me every time. David speaks with way too much maturity to be a teenager. He dodges questions, and isn’t always upfront. But he is still this wonderful man whom you can’t wait to learn more about. Your pulse quickens when he is around. He is….*sigh* dreamy!

Now, that’s not to say this book is all sunshine and roses. Secrets come out, people are hurt, hearts are shattered. The drama is heightened by Ara’s …well, dramatic flair. She is every bit the teenage girl. But she is still a very likeable character, and much stronger than she seems at times. And even still, stronger than she gives herself credit for. Horribly tragic things have happened to her, and yet she still found a thread to hold on to, to survive.

There are some scenes I could have personally done without where the storyline seemed to stumble a bit. But none of this really detracted from the main story. It was a quite enjoyable read that I started on Saturday and finished on Sunday. Then I immediately went online to see if the sequel was out yet – it’s not. That you will have to wait for - but only until April!! And believe me, you are going to move it to the top of your TBR. I would give this book a definitely 5 star rating with a few revisions, but that is all purely things of my own taste. I think that A.M. Hudson is definitely an author to keep on your radar.

Ara-Rose was suppose to die from the minute she was born. When the life came into her her parents named her after her father's mother Amara which means everlasting. Amara-Rose everlasting blossom. After a car accidents left her with out a mother and a brother, her father comes and brings her home with him. Ara-Rose is not looking forward to going to school. She doesn't understand why she is here and they aren't. When he eyes meet a very handsome boy standing by the school front door she is speechless. When she looks down and looks back up he is gone. As soon as she walks into the school she meets a girl name Emily. She takes her to the office to get her classes. When Emily walks her to her first class the teacher ask for David to take her to the library to get her books. As she looks to she David she remembers him from the front of the school. Her heart stops when their eyes meet.

I LOVE THIS BOOK! I find it hard to find a really good YA book. Well this one isn't good its freaking amazing~! First you know that there is something wrong with Ara (I'm not going to say what!) and you want to know what is wrong and why she is so sad. When you meet David Knight you will fall in love with him! I think every girl love a bad boy but good at heart. He is so sweet and when his secret it told you want to cry for him. I also love how you fall in love with the side characters. Mike, Sam, and Emily are my favorite sidekicks! I cant wait to meet Mike in the next book!! I will say this book is my new favorite!!!! I HIGHLY RECOMMED THIS BOOK!!

This is the original first book of the Dark Secrets series before some editing choices and a slightly less sweet David. I gave it five stars because I love this series and this was fun to read knowing how it actually plays out versus the original version.

I did like the David of this version, but it makes him almost exactly like Jason which is definitely different to see. I can see how people who read this one are solely on his "team". He's a different guy here to a degree. Granted, in the first book of the new edition he's still pretty nice overall. The book also gives a bit more detail to scenes sometimes which was nice, however the more streamlined version flows a little better.

I enjoyed this but I'm glad she gave David more of an edge. Even reading him as a different personality just didn't seem to fit as well as he does now. Plus, he and Jason need more contrast for all the coming events in the series. She did the right thing changing his personality a bit because the story needs you to hate and love him as much as everyone else does.

If you're a fan of the series I recommend reading this just because it's fun.

Ok, there were some Twilight similarities; how can there not be with the whole "vampire boy falls for troubled teen girl" storyline. But guess what - I loved Twilight, so that was a plus for me.

Now I really liked this book, but not quite loved. There were just a couple of things holding me back. First, (and this is a very minor issue, but it was troughout the book and it bugged me) Ara-Rose was from Australia, so she used the word Mum instead of Mom. What bothered me was that so did every other character in the book and they were all living in the good old US of A. Now, I can only speak for myself, but I've never referred to my mother as Mum.

More importantly, there were a few times that I didn't really like Ara-Rose and I didn't know how David could fall so in love with her. Don't get me wrong, I was trying my hardest to love her and there were a several times that I did, but I kept finding myself shaking my head at her in disbelief and asking her (out loud sometimes! and no, I haven't lost my mind, YET!) how she could act like that or say what she did.

With all of that off my chest, let me just say that this author is very talented. There were several scenes where I felt what the characters were feeling. My heart would speed up or ache or I would feel the embarrassment and heat that they were feeling. (The closet scene!! Mercy me!) I don't often do that and that's what I love most when reading. I am a fan of this series and will be purchasing the next book!

I dont know how but I'm finding all these free books that are actually good! This book was no exception. I usually don't like the love at first sight crap. Because face it, it's bull crap! But in this book the author did it in a way where it works. Where it sounds believeable. I love how David is just the sweetest person, and when he standed up for Ara (which is what she likes to be called) aganist those girls I was like "AHHHHHHH!" You can't get a better dude than that. The only bad side to this is, David is a VAMPIRE! A very sexy vampire *wink wink*

Ara lives with her father her step mother, and step brother. Ara's mom and little brother died in a caar accident which she was in also. She was the only one to survive, and she blames herself for it happening. David tries to let her see that it wasn't her fault. But she can't get that in that big skull of her's.

David soon has to leave, but Ara doesn't want him too. He doesn't either. But the only way for them to stay together is if she turns into a vampire. Will she? Will she not? You have to find that one out on your own.

The romance was awesome, I mean she's dating a vampire what isn't awesome about that? Edward Cullen is probablary the exception to that though. No offence to you twilight fans.

This book had me laughing, crying, smiling, it had it all. But guys that's not the best part... IT'S FLIPPIN FREE! Just a few little clicks and bam its there, and if you don't like it then there isn't any harm done. If you do though then you're crazy. This book was awsome buy it now!

There was not a thing that I did not LOVE about this book. Extremely well written story. I totally got a feel for the world she has created. Story line flows well and easy to follow.

'Ara' as she has shortened her name, she is very well developed. She stays true to who she is through out the story and you can see her growth. I loved her. She has lost someone dear to her and that plays into who she is now.

David... Swoon no really. He is a total guy but still so romantic. Says and does things for that someone he loves. Would do anything for her even when it goes against everything he wants! I fell for him almost instantly.

*this is who I see when reading him - VISIT THE BLOG to see the hottie!

Family and friends of Ara are all well written too. They have depth and are not just background filler. I especially love her BFF and hope to "see" him next book. Which I cannot WAIT for to see what is going to happen with everyone.

Ugh!!! Firstly, I'd like to address the author's disclosure on the book being written in Australian English. I have absolutely no problem with that. The protagonist is in fact from Australia - it makes absolute sense that her speech and thoughts are written in Aussie English. HOWEVER, the story is set in America and the American characters are speaking in Australian English, too!

Ara-Rose drove me bonkers! She is one of the most self-pitying, whiny, spoiled, selfish, annoying characters I have ever read. David isn't much better, either. Some of the things he says are entirely too sugary-sweet. I have never met a guy that would say some of this stuff. And, David calling Ara "girl" kept giving me flashbacks of Joey McIntyre. o.O

Talk about insta-love! I love you is muttered only five days after the first meeting in a certain relationship. *cringe*

Ara reflects upon her first kiss claiming the dude stole it from her, from the man who might have wanted to marry her. It should belong to someone she's going to spend the rest of her life with. Really? It's a freaking kiss...and there wasn't even tongue involved! Mind you, she also wanted said kiss and willingly participated in it.

This novel is so poorly written. At one point, the protag is describing a storm "...when a loud crack of thunder struck the ground outside and lightening hit barely a second after it." Wow. So, is she saying lightening comes from thunder?

If all that isn't bad enough, the whole story is reverse Twilight. There is nothing original at all; the author took everything from Twilight and flipped it around.

This book has no redeeming qualities whatsoever and I will definitely NOT be reading the rest of this series.

Did I purchase this book: No, on sale for free on Amazon
Would I read it again: Hell no!
Do I recommend to others: Absolutely not

Over all I enjoyed the story.
It pulled me in and for the most part kept my attention.

What I didn’t like about it was that after the first half of the story there were points that were getting a bit too dragged-out and even repetitive (at least for me), because of that aspect it took away from the initial enjoyment of the story.
I wasn’t so much bothered by the fact that it was an alternate Twilight kind of story, but it did sometimes become too much so and wasn’t enough its own story.

But even with the things I didn’t like, I am still rather eager to find out what happens next.

This book was over 1100 pages and if you take out the insane inner dialogue from the main character, the author would be left with a little over 100 pages. Of course, this book ended when the story wasn't finished. The more I read books that leave you hanging so you have to purchase the next one, the more irritated I get. If the work is good enough to stand alone, this reader will purchase the next one. Needless to say, I will purchase no more books by A. M. Hudson. It's free, but not worth your time; unless you skip the insane rambling.

(4.5 Rating) This is a very intense, intriguing, and sometimes emotional read! It kept me thinking and guessing. The main character Ara's past issues really make you feel for her as a young girl that has had her whole world turned upside down! A.M. Hudson does a great job of getting the reader invested in the characters. While reading I was reminded of Twilight a bit which was eventually referenced in the storyline. This first installment of the Dark Secrets Series ends with a cliff hanger... I will definitely be looking forward to the next book in this series. I want to know where David and Ara-Rose end up! I would recommend this book to those who love the paranormal and Vampires!

Disclosure: I received a copy of the book for review purposes only through Bewitching Book Tours. I was not compensated to write a positive or favorable review. This is Keeping Up With The Rheinlander's personal opinion.

I've been reading some pretty depressing books recently so I decided to read something a little more light hearted snd that's exactly what I got with Tears of the Broken. Ok so, it definitely reminded me of Twilight, the same concept but with very different prsonalities, but so what? I wanted something gushy and soppy and I wasn't disapointed.
I thought this book touched death and tragedy very well and even found myself choked up at one point through the book.
In some respects this book is just about a teenage girl who suffers from a terrible tradegy and in some twist of just wanting to be left alone to griev falls in love on her very first day of school. It's simple and it's beautiful but there is an undercurrent of a deeper story line that may not be as simple. David helped Ara get through her grief but now Ara has a huge decision to make. Life or love?
I'm really looking forward to the second book!

I LOVED this book! it has twists and turns on every page that makees it impossible put it down.
Sometimes Ara aggrivated me a little, but i think her personality is so real. She isn't made a perfect, strong, independent person. Yes, in some ways she is very strong, but she isn't perfect which makes her very easy to connect with.
There are many heartbreaking parts in this book, and if your a very emotional reader you may even have watery eyes. I know i did.I definatley Have Knight fever! David is Amazing! He is like the perfect guy.
I dislike it when people compare it to Twilight. It's not that similar. Sure he is a Vampire ,but his nature is very different. Like i said there are a few similarities, but in actuality most vampire books have those too. I Find this very different from any Vampire story i have ever read. I've recommended this book to numerous people already. If your into vampires i'm sure you will love this book!

This book could have been so good. It has its moments, but the main character is so extremely frustrating; I wanted to strangle her with my bare hands. Lord, have mercy on a reader. Please make a decision already, Ara. I also didn't get Ara's parents...or the undying devotion of the guys towards Ara. Well, I have a lot I could say, but I really don't have the energy to go into. This series (so far) just zaps everything out of you...and not necessarily in the best way. The first book is an OK read, just agonizingly frustrating. The second book and third books are equally frustrating in places. However, the second has one really interesting turn of events, and the third gets very interesting about halfway through. I'm intrigued enough to finish the third and probably will read the rest of the series.

love love loved this book. We start off knowing Ara has a secret, one that has forced her to move half way around the world to live with her dad and his new family in america. We meet David, a mysterious guy with a liking for Ara, and the book goes from there about there romance and "secrets" We find out Ara's pretty quickly, and i pegged David's from the get go. The book ends with a sudden choice that has to be made leaving you hanging!.... making the next book a must read. What I liked about this storyline, is that they did fight with each other, they werent all so maddly in love that there wasnt anything else to the story.

Ok, so I don't write reviews, because in my opinion if you truly want to read a book... you will, regardless of what someone else's review said.
With that being said, if you like Twilight, read it.

Tears of the Broken reads a lot like Twilight and New Moon put together minus Jacob, the sparkling skin and the leaving parts. But with the threatening of leaving and all that vampy fun stuff. Ok I take that back, I do write reviews...but very small reviews. I don't have a way with words like others do!

LOVE LOVE LOVE this book!!!! The author takes you on such an amazing journey with Ara and David. Even though it is literaly love at first site, the author allows you plenty of time to get to know each character and fall in love with their story. I loved how Ara was able to pull away from "the darkness" and find the light again through David, even with the slight "bumps" in the road. I can' t wait to read book two and see where this story will lead! I would highly recommend to take a chance on this book, you wont be disappointed.

I was so excited to read this book, but after the first half I couldn't read anymore. The book started out really well, but eventually I got tired of the characters. I am exhausted by these female characters that have zero self confidence, and never think they are good enough for the male lead. Even David got tiresome, after him always wanting to talk about things later. In the first half of the book, he barely revealed anything about what kind of a person he was. I can definitely see this book being for young girls.

Overall, I thought the book was good, although a bit slow in getting into the main plot of the story. Ara started off as a sweet character, yet depressed...but near the end her character seemed obsessed with David biting her, and being able to taste his blood, but not wanting to become a vampire herself. Hopefully, the next book will clarify her awkward behavior, and reveal Mike's role in the story.

I haven' t read but I know the Twilight series, so I couldn't but notice the similarly storyline. But I 've already downloaded the second book because I think it will make a difference. I'll know soon.. As for Ara's conflicted behavior I don't mind, yet. After all she is a teenager and traumatized as well.

A very exciting beginning to what becomes an excellent series I couldn't put down. You begin to get to know the characters and develop relationships with each of them. Ends with you dying to get to the second book which does NOT disappoint!! 5 stars for Hudson! This series completely had me. Cannot WAIT for her 4th book!

Ohhhhh!!! Thank you! Book two is out!!! This love story is so intense. I'm not sure how to explain this? He's a true Vampire with all the fixings and it's just too tempting to want to be bitten! David and Ara story is what a love story is made of. On to book 2!! Let's see what trouble these two will cause now. Lol

"A.M. Hudson's novel, Tears of the Broken, isn't the everyday, expected book about vampires and teenage love. It's deeper. The entire book is more an emotional character study than a novel with a perfect plot arc."

Very well written book. I love the depth and complexity of both the characters and the story. There are so many strong emotional situations and choices faced and tragic loss to overcome.
