Paula Stillman is 24 years old, born and raised on her family's farm in Alberta Province, Canada. She is small in stature, but well built with very long, curly flaming red hair. After her parents are killed in a violent automobile accident, she chooses to leave the ranch and reside in Winnipeg allowing her older sister and her husband to manage the ranch. Paula is an artist and writer, single, living in an apartment with a roommate, Anne Brooks. Anne is kept busy as a nurse who resides with patients during their critical care needs. While Paula enjoys dating men, she prefers to keep her relationships platonic. During one evening date with Leon Hunter, a successful businessman, he makes advances toward her to satisfy bets that he has made with other men. His actions relive moments of terror and fear in Paula, and she finds it necessary to return to the family ranch to rebuild relationships with her sister, Margaret, and her husband, Larry, and their two children. In this romantic thriller, Paula becomes the prey of several men. Wherever she goes, she is followed to the point that she runs and hides. Except for one man who persists in prying her out of the shadows of her past that seem to control her life.
My love of books and reading started at a very young age while growing up in East Haven, CT. As an adult, it wasn't long before I became a working mom of five. Little time was afforded me to read, let alone trying my hand at writing. Husband, Bruce, and I have been married for 49 wonderful years. For over 10 years we enjoyed living on our ocean going sloop, 'Takaroa II' moored in the Sacramento Delta. We enjoyed many cruises sailing along the scenic Calif coastline. Now, we live in the high mountains of Utah, Cache Valley. We're retired and I am now making time to fulfill my dream of writing novels. Bruce is very supportive of my goal, and believe it or not, our dogs support me, too!
Book: Afraid Of Love Author: Nancy Silk Genre: Romantic Suspense with a touch of Paranormal (psychic visions) Length: Approximately 239 Pages
For all of you romance junkies out there AFRAID OF LOVE by NANCY SILK is a great read! Paula is a 24 year-old woman that has suffered through a terrifyingly, traumatic experience when she was a young girl. This experience has left her afraid of love and intimacy with men. She enjoys platonic relationships with men, but the thought of intimacy makes her withdraw emotionally and physically ill.
After her trust is violated by a man she’s been dating, she runs to her sister at her family’s ranch to try to rebuild the relationship they once had. It’s there she meets Richard, the neighboring rancher that is used to having his way with women and trusts them about as much as Paula trusts men. I really got a kick out of this first meeting and laughed out loud when I read about it.
What I really appreciated about this book is the author didn’t rush this relationship. The reader doesn’t find out until the end if they are able to come together. I’m not going to spoil it for you and tell you if they can come to an agreement, but these are two people that are drawn to each other and have deep feelings for each other that grow and blossom through the book. Do they remain good, caring friends, or can they get past their fears and move into a full-blown relationship?
I know that I’ve mentioned in past reviews that when my mother was alive, we would read books and discuss them. She would have loved this book (I even had flashes of her reading it and smiling as I sat there with my Kindle) and this is one book I would love to discuss with her for hours. I’d like to thank Ms. Silk for bringing back those wonderful memories for me.
If you enjoy romance, you’ve just got to pick AFRAID OF LOVE by NANCY SILK up. You won’t be disappointed.
I can't believe I read this whole book, but in my defense I did skim a lot. The only part that resonated with me were the descriptions of and love for the land, but even those were overdone.
I liked the premise of the story. The protagonist's daydreams of nature added a whimsical touch to the story as well as her dealing with the death of her parents and coming home after a strained relationship with her sister and her brother-in-law.
There were a lot of things I did not like about the story however. It is clear that the writing in general could use an editor. It was very jarring in places. One example is the technique the author used when "trouble" was about to occur. She announced it and then the scene occurred. It was annoying and made the story amateurish. The first example of this is where the barbed wire fence was introduced and how it looked sharp. The next sentence was along the lines of "and she would know how sharp it would be." I could forgive one slip like that because it can be a style but every single time there was something to upset her, there was a sentence announcing it. It was very bad foreshadowing.
I also had a hard time liking the heroine. She was full of cliches and just not very likable. I can understand why she would have the attitude and fears she did have but almost a full book of her being a cold bitch is tiresome. As for the attention she always got from men wherever she went, it could've been dealt with in a better manner. It came off as a pack of wild teenagers following a half naked woman everywhere.
I am disappointed that a good idea for the character just came off poorly and underdeveloped. I would not recommend this book even for a light romance read.
A Story of Healing Paula has a secret that she will not share with anyone. When that secret causes a problem with her male friend, she finds it necessary to return to her birthplace - a ranch in Alberta, Canada - from her home of the last five years in Winnipeg. While Paula is a fiercely independent soul, the rift between her and her family does disturb her, and she longs to go home and make amends. While she is working things out with her family and settling back into the life she loves, she meets a wealthy rancher, Richard Woosley, who is determined to grow close to the feisty redhead. His persistence eventually begins to win over Paula, and she begins to fall in love. However, there are still issues to be overcome and among the beautifully descriptive settings lurks some heavy emotional overtones. But Ms. Silk shows that healing can and will occur when the individual has someone who is patient and caring enough to stick it out. If you enjoy descriptive settings, heroines who are altogether human and a little touch of drama, don't miss this tale!
