Kya Hubbard never pictured herself caught up in a world of shape-shifters and enemy packs. After all, she was just a small town girl trying to work her way through college. However, when she's attacked walking home after a long night working at the diner, the assault leaves her transformed and an unwilling member to a pack of voracious shape-shifters.

Kya bides her time and after years of torture and abuse, she finally escapes her pack and runs as fast and as hard as she can to find solace with her only friend in Montana's breathtaking Glacier National Park.

Once in Montana, Kya's hopes of a peaceful existence are dashed when her so-called friend turns her over to the Alpha of the great North West Territory pack. To make matters worse the Alpha's larger and more ominous brother, Briggs, is reduced to a heap of gorgeous writhing agony upon locking eyes with Kya. Delighted by Briggs' physical inhibition that is triggered by proximity to Kya, the Alpha informs the pack that Kya is Briggs' mate.

But before Kya and Briggs can fight free of the mating bonds threatening to join them indefinitely and against their wishes, Kya's insatiable pack tracks her down determined to drag her kicking and screaming back to their Colorado den.

As Briggs struggles to fight the wolf within that demands he bind Kya to him, Briggs cannot fight his instincts to protect what is his. With the help of his pack, Briggs prepares to defend his unwanted mate while discovering that while Kya is not what he wants, she is what he needs.

My pack territory is in Central Montana, between Stone Crow Estates and the North Fortress. Born and raised in an untamed location that bridges the gap between rolling prairies and majestic mountain peaks, I am born to a family that also bridges the gap between cultures. My father’s people boast a fiercely proud Scandinavian ancestry while my mother’s tribes descend from two savagely beautiful and unique nations (White Clay and Nakoda) that inspire my Skin Walker series.

I'm a huge fan of MMA, boxing, 30 Seconds to Mars, DMX, Nahko and Medicine for the People, and 21 Pilots (“…sometimes quiet is violent”). I also love to read because it encourages me to write. (I hate it when authors add that they love coffee and chocolate. Really? Who doesn't love coffee and chocolate?) Anyway, I love beer...kidding. I don't love beer but we are engaged in a very serious relationship. (Mom, please don't call me when you read this.)

Please leave feedback….well, only if it’s positive. “Keep in mind that I’m an artist and I’m sensitive about my shit!  (Erykah Badu lyrics!)

This was an amazing story and I loved it, there was tension, thriller and there was romance. It was just perfect, the characters were incredible and they're made for each other. Honestly by reading true mates book I keep thinking that, would it be nice if this happened in reality, it would be incredible, and that part always gets me.

and this quote goes perfectly with the book

This was beyond frustrating, the hero Briggs was a complete asshole, on more than one occasion he physically hurt the heroine, but his excuse was it was for her own good and he didn’t do it to brutalise her. As for Kya she spent most of the book running away. She’s Briggs fated mate but he doesn’t want a mate, Kya has escaped from her former pack where she was used and abused. So now with Briggs rejection she keeps running from the Blackbird pack as well. Quite honestly I didn’t blame her.

The trouble with this story was that the two lead characters hardly spend any time together. They are both irritating so in the end I felt no connection to them and wasn’t invested enough to care if they got together.

An unexpected feeling

Oh wow! This book moved me to tears on more than one occasion. The struggles the characters faced and their pasts combined to make this an emotional read that left me reeling from the intensity of it. There are a few triggers, but the author embraced them and made them a part of the story making it easier to move past them. With all of her books, the intensity level is high and the action keeps the story fast-paced with a HEA that I can’t forget. This book is a wonderful addition to the series and I am looking forward to reading the next book by this author.

I'm giving this book 3 stars for the entertaining story and an extra star for potential. This was a shifter story with some new fresh ideas and some moments of brilliance but it also had a few problems that were probably due to a lack of writing experience on the part of the author. A couple of places where motivations were not well explained and maybe where a character's motivations were weak and not a good basis for their actions. Perhaps also the shifter world needed a clearer explanation. Perhaps some ideas could have filled out a bit more clearly. There was nothing I really couldn't understand it just wasn't the most polished but it was far from a rough draft. There were some editing errors however. Still it was very readable.

This was told entirely from the POV of the heroine. I liked her. She was a turned wolf in a world where turning humans to wolves is illegal. She dealt with it as best she could and was a fighter, not in a warrior sense, but in a never give up sense. She was an omega and was mistreated by her old pack. Here is one of those areas that could have used more filling out. What exactly is an omega in her "world"? Just the lowest wolf in the pack? Something else? Why did they turn her? Did that pack need women? Evidently the wolves could mate with humans and have wolf babies. That was only inferred though. How many packs were there? Why did the first pack have only men? Why did they treat her so bad? (rape and beatings and kept her in a basement for 4 years.) So even though you knew what had happened it wasn't real clear on whys. Also she didn't have any severe problem being with the hero even after being abused for 4 years. That was the only actual plot point I had a problem with.

One of the refreshing ideas was that once a wolf met his/her mate they were bowled over with pain whenever they touched if they were denying the bond. You could permanently deny the bond it seems although it wasn't real clear how or when the pain would go away if you did. It was pretty fun to see the hero accidently touch the heroine and practically fall over. The hero was not as well drawn as the heroine. He motivations were fairly weak in places and he did seem to blow hot and cold at odd intervals. I did like him though and enjoyed his alpha personality.

Final thoughts - I really enjoyed it. I would love to read more in this world. I hope to see the author continue to refine her work and tighten plots and motivations.

Omg this book made no sense at all. It started out good with the author jumping right on explaining some shifter traits. I expected a storyline with an abused heroine who gradually becomes strong and moves past her abuse to find love with her mate. The heroine does a complete 180 like...in between chapters. One shes cowering abuse victim next shes yelling in dudes face. Its not logical. "Hero" was not a very positive guy. Hes got serious rage issues and physically hurts the heroine several times...not in like a god i cant stand her im gonna hit her way but still. I much prefer shifter lit where the mate is everything and the males goal in life is to keep his mate safe and happy. Not act like a psycho with anger issues and be completely bipolar around her because he wants to spare his own feelings. The plot couldve been good but the writing was awful. Beyond just simple misspellings (of which there were several) its like...she skipped whole scenes and expected us to just catch on. Like when the heroine remembers being "wrapped in his arms" and im really thinking hard about whether this was actually in a scene. Or when her friend is going to visit her brother, joe, then heroine says "go visit your sister"...did someone have a gender change in the last five seconds? As i already mentioned the heroine wasnt believable in going from abuse victim (though there is a question in my mind as to whether the hero's actions wouldnt mean she just changed abusers) to macho in your face woman. I had intended to finish this because by the time i was annoyed i was over half done...but i was just so confused at every turn i realized there was no way that was gonna work.

Great story and characters

Danger abounds in this fantastic story. Briggs is up for protecting his destined mate, but not a chance will he accept her as his mate. Kya is running for her life. She has never known love, not since her father died. Too damaged to fight for her mate, she runs. But evil chases her, and everyone who tries to help her gets hurt. This was a fantastic story. I wanted Kya to find some peace and love and family. I really liked her character.

It was ok. It was kinda similar to the Alpha and Omega series. The characters were likable and the story line entertaining. I did wanna shake the main character at one point though and tell her to stop always running away. Overall not a bad read.

This was so good, it was more a love story than a paranormal, but it definitely had that element :)

Wish I passed on this one.

I did not like this one at all, it was such a major struggle for me to complete, that towards the end i just started to skim through the rest.

Might have a spoiler ahead.
Story was mainly told from the h's perspective and she was so so so annoying and immature.
The H/h did not feel like a couple. But maybe thats only cause we had the one side.

Some issues for me, here's a spoiler... so h has been exchanged in a kidnapping, Kyler has opened the trunk and pours gasoline on the h. After her rescue, Pony hangs up her coat and offers her some coffee. ??? Lol ok. Then a oh, if you want to shower towels are....

The fact that there wasn't really anything special about being a shifter except maybe the telepathic communication with other pack members. No advanced healing (cause she was shot) or other abilities, because the h stated they are just like regular people. oh wait, I think this is a new one.... the H could project his emotions or "will" her to sleep and feel other emotions like sexual desire but "ill never do that to you" . What was up with not hearing anything about her time with the evil pack? The h didn't need therapy? She was supposedly kept captive for 4 years in the basement, beatings and possible rape. Just too much drama

There just didn't seem like any consistency. Time felt off as well. Sorry to say I purchased the series. Already a few pages into the next book and that H is wondering why the h hasn't start to heal since shifters have advantages to heal. Lol, see inconsistent.

Oh yay! this was super good! I've seen it a million times and a half on my amazon recommendation list but i always even avoided looking at it because i thought from the cover and title really it would be something completely different from what it was. Well let me tell you, the saying don't judge a book by its cover is something i am sure all readers do, because we are allowed obviously to deem what is readable by the cover - i agree with that, most of the time. This time i wish i had looked at the summary! Because holy hell you are missing out if you keep skimming by it because it doesn't look like what you are looking for because of the cover.

So now you know that i love it, or if you don't, i loved it. Let me tell you why i loved it and why i think everyone who enjoys a good werewolf - i'm sorry shifter novel, will love this book!

So it starts off with Kya chained to a tree so you know its going to be good. When i read the summary i thought we would be starting with her escape from her old pack, its quite the opposite she is already escaped and is meeting Dell and Briggs for the first time. Now if the first few chapters don't get you hooked, which confuses the hell out of me because i started it stupidly late, and stayed up until about 4, and i wasn't even tired when i finally shut off my computer and said to myself, get the hell off you need to sleep. I seriously thought about debating on who actually needs sleep. Sleep, psst for losers...anyways i got a good five hours in before i was squirming in my sleep to know what will happen next and i was about half way through the book at this point. I enjoyed that it didn't come down to one epic battle... well sort of. Anyways the action is spread out, it isn't so far apart you are wondering, well what the hell? did they just forget about her? but enough that we can breathe for a minute and get to know our characters. The plot was fast-paced, i don't want to say fun as in meaning a good time, but as in it will keep you on the edge of you seat, the tip of your fingers just waiting to turn the next page kind of fun. Just that ending... sigh i didn't want their story to be over because i loved them but don;t worry its not a cliffhanger or super depressing. Its a great, fantastic ending that i am just a baby and demand more because i loved these characters... why you ask? Well let me tell you why!

Kya: Is turned against her will four years ago, in those four years she was held captive by the pack who changed her. She will never admit that they are her pack because they never really claim her as theirs until they want her back. Her previous pack is just a huge pile of crazy. And damn do i love crazy, and all types of it really. It makes for an interesting story but i am not talking about them. I am SOOOO SO SO SO SO SO HAPPY because a lot of authors, because of time i think, have their main characters just get over something super traumatic, and most of the time i am upset about that because i am thinking to myself this isn't real, i don't really believe that after four years of torture she is totally un-scarred on the outside and inside. Obviously this girl is scared, and who could blame her? In the beginning she doesn't understand what is going on, violent movements scare her, and she does what she knows, she retreats. But don't worry peoples who enjoy those kickass main character gals, she grows through the story. She is unbelievably self-less and loving. She grows to understand what a real family is - because even before her time with the other pack she didn't have much of a family. Anyways she discovers what it means to love. But after everything she has been through she is still scared, but we all have flaws, and thats what i think made me love her even more is that the author Susan Bliler wasn't scared to show that she had flaws, that she wasn't this invincible person.

Briggs: again i go back to the same thing i did with Kya he isn't perfect, and thank god for that. He is resistant to the idea of a mate. He isn't cruel towards Kya but he is cut off and serious. But more than that with her he shines through into a new person. I think that he had more of a character change that she was, and there were times in the book that the POVs almost shifted to him, it was all in third person closely following Kya most of all the time and sometimes drifted to his, or one of the other small characters. But honestly i think the only way this book could have gotten better for me was if we could have gotten, straight POV shifts between him and Kya. Anyways back to tall, dark and serious. He is beyond protective, bossy, somewhat of a jackass when need be, but beyond all else ridiculously sweet and caring towards her. I loved him more and more as the book went on. And i understand that beginning he is a bit quiet. Actually when you first meet him i was expecting someone who was fully into the idea of finding his true mate, and would be all for her and it would be kya fighting it. i was pleasantly surprised that wasn't the case. But anyways....

The villains are both physical people, and own personal wars for both Kya and Briggs. I think that it was a nice new mix. Usually when I read shifter books its a lot of times automatic they both love each other like that, and want to be together but someone is trying to keep them apart, but this time not only is it people but them, both Kya and Briggs.

The other pack members from the Blackbird pack - Dell and Briggs' pack (Dell is Briggs older brother and Alpha) are all pretty much awesome. And i loved them. None of the characters blended into one, which i say this a lot if you have read any other of my reviews, and i really liked that they didn't blend together because its nice to have separate characters when you create separate characters. Anways. My advice to you: Read it. Yup that is all Read it. seriously why are you still reading my review go read the book, you are wasting precious time!

But if you liked my review, and you aren't going to listen to some crazy stranger about going right this minute and buying this book then you should probably follow this link : http://theviolethourbookreviews.wordp... to my blog that will tell you other books that i loved, liked, or simply somewhat cared for. This book was very, very good. A lot of action, tension from the fact Kya Hubbard was attacked when walking home from working a long shift at the diner. She is transformed into a shifter and is taken into a bad pack and abused and tortured for at least 2 years before she finds a way to escape and run as far as she can. She ends up in another shifter pack, who do take her in and help her out. She finds her true mate there and he knows she is his true mate but wants nothing to do with her. Made for a lot of tense moments between them and found myself just hating him for what he was doing to Kya even though he didn't mean to really hurt her. Highly recommend.

love/hate

i love the series. i really do. i had difficulty with Briggs. He, to put this delicately, is an ass. Seriously. If he had just said he was willing to try. at any time. Kya would have stopped running. She was tortured. she has no trust in anyone. a little kindness from Briggs would have went a long way. so. i loved sweet Kya but i really want to poke Briggs in the eye. Still love Stevie and Pony.

Love finds a way

This is a story that is connected to the previous one, Briggs is Dell’s brother and encounters his mate Kya purposely chained to be found by the pack after escaping from her own tragic beginning as a shifter. The story spans from Montana to Colorado and across the states as Briggs chases down his mate for a happy ending. The story while complete in itself sets up for further stories outside of Colorado where the pack expands its ties to other shifters

I greatly enjoyed the plot development between Kya and Briggs and their bumpy relationship. I highly recommend this series if you enjoyed Skin Walkers because it has a similar feel with a lot more plot development. My only criticism would be the ending, I feel like it just ended abruptly but I look forward to reading more in the series!

This book was filled from from to back. From the main core of the book to all the tangents that flew off the pages catching you unawares. The characters were alive but fighting their selves and each other all the way. I couldn't put this book down if I tried as engulfed me in their story and I just wanted it to go on.

Ok

Not the biggest fan of this book. The book was written too much in kya perspective. I did like the struggle she went thru, but I would like to have Briggs too. Also , they never worked they her abuse or really the miscommunication between the two main characters.

Detailed abused!

For being abused for 4 years, I would think it would take more than 2 months to recover from it. All the angst, and she was fine instantly. Even for a story, it’s not that simple.

After sharing such high praise for Territory's prequel I jumped into Territory #2 with high expectations! Sadly- This book did not live up to it's predecessor.

In this installment we meet Kya Hubbard who is a shifter who was turned against her will. For the past several years her reality has been an absolute nightmare at the hands of a sadistic alpha and his pack. Upon her escape Kya runs into the North West Territory pack and meets Briggs (Dell's brother). Over the course of the book I was forced to endure Kya's escape attempts no less than one bazillion times. (Trust me- I counted!) The first few times were understandable based on her previous torture and treatment. But by the end I was smacking my palm to my forehead and wondering how this character made it to publication.

The next brain hemorrhage came in the form of Briggs Blackbird- Token Obtuse Male. As a fan of werewolf and shifter romance a common accepted trait of mates is their protective nature towards their female mates. Even to the male's detriment they typically protect their beloved at all cost. How in Hades does this guy miss that key concept? He blurts hurtful things over and over again and blames it on honesty? Shouldn't he be willing to sacrifice himself for her happiness? Possessive mate FAIL

Alas, I finished this book and my vigor to dive into the series has cooled. Such a promising prequel and then a frustration book 2. I've added the third installment to my "Want to Read" list but haven't tapped into it quite yet.

I really liked the idea for this story, unfortunately the execution fell a little flat for me. It needed some better editing. I never felt connected to the Hero and I never felt the Hero and Heroines connection to each other! I do not need a lot of sex in a romance novel, but what I do need is sexual tension and I did not feel any between the H/h. This just didn't feel like a romance novel to me! Lots of action scenes separated by the heroine sleeping and eating or escaping/running! On the plus side the Hero was my favorite type possessive and growly and protective! I also like the world that the author has created. Sorta reminiscent of Patricia Briggs Alpha Omega books. With the Hero even being named Briggs.
