I would have preferred less commentary & more artwork. Very often The illustrations are of & about things that I’m afraid to even draw in a doodlepad ! I am so preobsessed with Art as it should be, that being creative like this only causes me to panic ( ! )
I adore sketchbooks - they are beautiful, rough, raw, primal ideas lovingly carved out with pens, paper, crayons, paints...anything. They are the germinating ova, if you will, of an artist's final piece. They are as visceral and giving as as a dreamworld - everything is possible; or appears to be so. The pages are filled with select pieces from artists both young and old, famous and getting there. I could sit and look at this for hours.
This is an absolutely stunning book and would be a 6 out of 5 on the scale. There is a wide range of work, from artists with travelling sketch books or studio based. I was particularly taken by William Kentridge and Karen Butti.
