I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads. I was planning to give it to someone as a gift, but I liked it so much I kept it for myself. I work in a therapy office and everyone loves this book. They all want to use it with their clients; however, we have all found how much some of the chapters apply to our lives as well. In the office, we randomly open it to a chapter and read it. It's become a sort of game to see what "pep talk" and encouragement we could use in our daily lives. Each chapter is short but to the point. The author says things that are so obvious but in a way that makes you realize what you've been missing or overlooked. It's a great gift for anyone. I know my coworkers are going to get this book and I'll probably get it for my friends. PS I do not know this author personally so my review is not biased. I am a fan now. =)

I received this book free from Goodreads, and I am extremely grateful for that. However, I also feel that this gift makes it imperative I am honest in my review.

Overall, I thought the work was extremely topical. I finished the book in two baths. The chapters were extremely short and felt more like blog posts. I felt that there was an opportunity to dig deeper in the advice and the anecdotes. I didn't always feel like the author was willing to get extremely personal or completely honest with us as readers. And, it's hard to take advice from someone you don't know. Writing is extremely personal anyway and it can be hard to go that extra step further. I think in this case it would have made the work more credible and honest. I felt like there was a guard of some kind up at all times.

I did not agree with the author's chapter on feminism. The experience in her class sounds like it might have been enough to put one off. However, her definition of feminism was extremely limited. I have studied feminism in multiple classes, including the history of the 2nd wave of the woman's movement and an entire semester on feminism and theatre. All of these experience have taught me that feminism is not about being better than men or separate from them. Rather, it is about having choices. She seems to be focusing on radical feminism, which is an extremely limiting view.

The advice is good. Ultimately, I do not think I'm the audience this was meant for. It focused on the idea of being single a lot, and although the introduction introduces the idea that society tells us we should be married by 21 (and although I am 21 I have never heard this), I don't view being single as my most pressing life concern. I think this book could be extremely beneficial for someone a little lost in their life and/or someone new to self-help (which I don't read extensively either). Additionally, for some the short, to-the-point sections could be a boon. There is a lot of good stuff jam-packed in this small book.

Despite being heavily religious with biblical quotations, I still enjoyed reading it.

I found it too shallow in the "how to change" aspect. The ideas aren't bad, but there just isn't any substance for the reader to work with.
