This book was way different than what I was expecting. Leave it to Crystal to have you feeling what the characters are going though. I actually enjoyed this book so much that I was a bit sad when it ended so quickly.
God Blessed the Broken Road is about a brother and sister who are traveling on the road. David and Mariza are very close siblings and are there for each other through good times and bad. When they are detoured to at a rest stop, Mariza goes missing. David starts blaming his self. With the help of Officer Santos they find the person who has kidnapped Mariza but are they too late?
When David starts spiraling into depression because of what happened to Mariza he takes a turn for the worse. He is able to see his sister one last time and she assures him that he is destined for something bigger. He has a future and to know that what happened was not his fault. This book was truly touching, Crystal is an amazing author who writes great Christian books.
The only thing I would have wanted to see and maybe it will come out in the second book, is what caused David to fall from grace so early on? There was not a lot of detail to it when I first started reading.
This heart wrenching story is not the usual genre in which I read, but the emotion of the characters had me hooked from the beginning.
Though I would've liked a bit more background about David's initial troubles, the feelings and emotions that he experienced while dealing with one of life's most difficult situations was genuine.
The book was fast paced and I read it in one sitting. While the situation that Mariza and David faced is one that I pray I'm never in, I was happy with the ending that Cattabriga wrote for them.
I will definitely be reading books two and three in the God Blessed the Broken Road series.
I received this story as a gift from Ms. Cattabriga and had it read in no time. This story is about two siblings, David and Mariza. Their parents have divorced at a young age for them and they have been inseparable since until tragedy cuts their tight bond. This story deals with the loss we have felt in different ways and how we all question our faith in God. I really liked this story because it helps us think that maybe we all still have a purpose in life when all seems lost.
I really enjoyed reading “God Blessed the Broken Road”. I look forward to reading the other two books in the series. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in books about faith and angels watching over them.
Mariza and David where going on a road trip to Colorado. Mariza has always tried her best to watch over him. Their parents divorced when Mariza was 11 and David was 5. While their mother got re-married to a guy named John, their dad never re-married. It was raining before they left on their road trip and continued to rain. Mariza let David pick what music they listened to on the radio while she drove a Prius. The road trip was from Georgia to Colorado which would take a little over a day if they drove straight through.
After an hour of driving David was getting hungry and wanted to find a place to stop to eat. After they parked and got out of the car they made their way to the building. David was already inside and Mariza was just about to go in when a man rudely shoves her out of the way. David gets angry, grabs the man by his collar, and hits the man which causes him to fall to the floor. Mariza and David decide to leave before anything else happened. The next stop was 12 miles away. When they reach the next rest stop, Mariza gets out of the car and falls into a giant puddle. Once inside the building Mariza goes to the restroom to change clothes and dry her hair using a hand dryer. The only place to eat at was McDonald’s, it wasn’t Mariza’s favorite place but she was hungry. She ordered a box of fries and a drink. They ate in the car because it was safer and it was late at night.
David decided to go to sleep while Mariza continued to drive. When she saw a road sign that read entering Tennessee she decided to wake David up because she didn’t know where to go next. When they arrived at the rest area they saw a couple of state police and cops in the parking lot. The officer asked them to park their car and go inside the building. The reason was because the officers wanted everyone off the highway and go inside to be safe. Once inside the building, Mariza and David couldn’t believe how many people had been crammed into a large open room. They notice a man standing against the far wall alone and decide to go over to ask him if he knew anything. Mariza gets a splitting headache and needs to take some aspirin. She walks over to the vending machines but it only took change and she didn’t have any. She decides to go into the restroom to take the aspirin by drinking water from the faucet. Not knowing that the man she tried to talk to earlier was dangerous and was waiting to kidnap her.
David was beginning to worry about his sister because she hadn’t come back yet. David runs towards the officers who are showing people a picture of the suspect. David recognizes the man that he and Mariza had tried talking to earlier. David realizes that the man has taken his sister. The officers find Mariza’s bracelet on the restroom floor. Officer Santos tells David that he was just informed that the vehicle the suspect was driving had just been found. David goes with Officer Santos to the spot where the suspects vehicle was found. The car is a rusted old Buick and beside the vehicle was a bloody shirt belonging to Mariza. David and Officer Santos go back to the building were Mariza was last seen. David goes back into the bathroom and finds a charm that he had given his sister last Christmas.
While at the police station, Officer Santos receives a tip that the suspect had been spotted at a motel. David goes through a stack of folders until he finds the name Ted Borden. David and Officer Santos head over to the motel to find the suspect. David doesn’t wait for the officers to locate the room the suspect was staying in. David finds the room that Ted was staying in and starts hitting him. Ted ends up in the hospital, goes into a coma, and eventually dies before anyone can question him about Mariza’s whereabouts. David ends up calling his parents to tell them about his sister’s disappearance. His parents blame him for Mariza’s kidnapping. David walks to a gas station and calls his friend Josh to come pick him up. David goes to Josh’s house and ends up sleeping for 2 days. Josh drives David to the police station to talk to Officer Santos. Officer Santos tells David after combing through the car, they found Ted and Mariza’s prints, traces of hair and blood in the trunk. After leaving the police station, Josh and David go to a bar. David ends up getting wasted. Back at Josh’s house David takes a prescription of Oxycodone. David decides it’s time to go back to his house and his friend Josh drives him home.
David borrows a friend’s car and runs some errands. The first thing he grabs is a picture frame that has his and Mariza’s photo in it. Then he grabs a candle he brought from home and lights it. Then he pulled out a bottle of Captain Morgan and the pills he took from Josh’s house. Last thing he gets out was a pen and notepad to write his parents a letter. He then folds the letter and places it in the envelope that has the word “Goodbye” written on the outside. He proceeds to take 20 pills of Oxycodone and drink the bottle of Captain Morgan using a shot glass. An hour later, Josh arrives at the motel and kicks the door in when David doesn’t answer. He finds David barely breathing and calls 911. David is rushed to the hospital.
While in the hospital David finds himself in Heaven where he sees his sister. Mariza tells him to go back to live his life. She says he is destined for great things and it’s not his time yet. David wakes up in the hospital and Josh tells him his parents do care about him. After staying in the hospital for a couple of days, his parents suggest he goes into a program to help him cope with things he had been through. A couple of years had passed before the family found out what happened to Mariza. It turns out that Ted wasn’t the only suspect. It turns out that Ralph Skeeter owned a van that was seen at the motel and helped Ted with disposing the body. Mariza had been cremated because she didn’t want to be put in the ground. David was glad because he could take his sister with him wherever he went. He moved out of Georgia and ended up in Seattle, Washington. He works for a crisis center answering phones.
What a beautiful way to start off this series! I have been left wanting more and think that this story could have really been a great novel, and not just an amazing short story, but I am definitely ready for the next book! I am much anticipating what God has in store for David and the new characters in the next book. I love that this book brings in the greatness of God, even in the face of tradgedy. It provided a wonderful balance between love and heartbreak. My favorite quote in the book is "Faith is, believing in something we can't see, something greater than us. It's something we somehow learn to put all our trust in. For me, there is only one thing I put my faith in now, and that's God." (Mariza) Her brother's original faith and trust in a higher power is orignally what helped secure her own trust in God. And when her brother David starts to falter, she does what she can to help bring him back to his original path, and she does help him, but in a way that she could never possibly imagine. The events that take place would test the faith of the strongest believer, which makes it that much harder for the character of David, who is struggling to find his way back to God. Many times when a character is faced with a crisis, they tend to question God's intentions and turn their backs to Him, but it seems like this tradgedy may be what will eventually bring David back to God....eventually. Mariza is a beautiful character and I loved her from the beginning. She was self-less and wanted more than anything to bring her brother out of his unexplained depression. She is willing to do whatever it takes to help her brother, including embarking on a vacation across county in the worse storm imaginable. The bond between Mariza and David was intense, and what the love between siblings should be. They were in many ways a typical brother and sister who loved to tease each other and push the other's buttons. But coming from a broken home they had relied soley on each other for support over the years, and could never imagine life without the other. I am really glad that the author showed perspectives from both sides, so that the reader really gets to know and love Mariza before we shifted to David's point of view. For me, it really made me feel everything right along with David as he searched for his sister. I desperately wanted him to find her, because I missed her too. This was a beautifully written story that helps you to think about your own relationship with God, and how that bond may be tested in the face of the worst tragedy you could imagine. Both characters are strong and easily related to, and you really feel each emotion as they do. The stuggles that they face, especially David, is enough to bring you to tears, so keep the tissues handy. The author also builds up the suspense well, and keeps you on the edge as you get to know the characters, but you have a bad feeling in the pit of your stomach that something is going to happen. I also noticed the second time I went through the story, that the author uses a lot of foreshadowing to the events to come, which only adds the suspense and the dramatic effect that this book has on it's reader. This would be a good book for anyone to read regaurdless of what type genre you prefer. Its has amazing characters and a message that goes down into your soul, and will keep you thinking long after you have finished the last page. I am looking forward to reading more from this author especially the next book in this promising series.
David and his sister Mariza decided to embark on an adventure - holiday, till they are detoured along the highway during heavy rainfall. A pitstop that David will remember for the rest of his life. HIs faith is tested and life is turned upside down. Will Mariza save him in more ways than one ?
WOW - I must say this is not at all what I expected and in a good way . A emotional rollercoaster filled with a twist I didnt expect ! After reading the blurb I wasnt sure what to expect but delving into this book I was taken aback a few steps and found myself quiet heartbroken. There is a message behind this story, and I hope that readers do see this.
Im one of those teary eyed readers as soon as tragidy of this mutli tude comes forth Im sniffing and frantically reading to find out the outcome. ** thinking to myself whyyyyyyyyyy ??? ** Cystal has thrown in heartbreak and loss in this short story that has not only gripped at my heart but leaving me heartbroken for David. Relating to his loss, the things we lean upon at our times of need are not always a good thing, we question our faith, wander why the loss and if Someone is really punishing us to leave us this way and of course the question we all ask WHY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A short read that will have you reading from begining to end, teary eyed and somewhat happy at the ending. ** I can say the only relief I have at the ending was that Mariza helped David to regain his faith - his strength and move on with his life. Im not a religious person,(( Its not that I dont believe )) but I throughly enjoyed this heartfelt story . I believe and have witnessed people 's faith and I must say this story reflects the ups and downs of life. Doubting life, your faith, and things thrown upon you... where you just have to pull up those socks and solider on. Very true to life, and realistically written.
Twists and turns, emotional angist and heartbreak but also a light at the end of that dark tunnell.
A compelling short story, that will not only make your heart ache, but leave you wandering way past the last page.
Once reading the book the cover reflects it to the tee, I think its a beautiful cover and a great storyline to inspire those who may have stumbled off The broken road.
HOPE - What seems to us as bitter trials are often blessings in disguise"
I am at a lost for words......this story was simply beautiful. The faith that one boy has through something that is life changing.
Character development was off, I didn't have a clear pictures of the two main characters very well. I got their personalities but what did they look like? What race are they? What color hair do they have? Those questions I asked as I read this book.
It isn't very clear what problems David's problems are that lead to the trip that changes their lives forever.
The plot has a heart wrenching twist that I didn't see coming, heart breaking can't describe what David felt. He felt emotions even deeper then that. I think anyone would though in the situation he was in though.
This book was a tear jerker. I broke into tears several time through out the novel. You defiantly need a box of tissues next to you as you read.
I found the end was rushed. Like the author wanted it to end.
Here are other things that I wandered about that are spoilers, read at your own risk:
Usually I don't read this kind of genre, though I am catholic and believe in god I don't read about it. I am glad I took the time to read this story though. Everybody will get something from this story.

I don't usually read stories like this very often.I am glad I did.It showed me that you can find your way back to God and find your faith after losing it,no matter what you have done.God has a purpose and the pain you may go through is for a reason,it may one day help someone else get through a painful situation and you might be the only one who can reach them because you been where they are at now.Love, love, loved this book, great inspiration, can't wait for the sequel! Amazon Verified Purchase (What's this?) This review is from: God Blessed the Broken Road Book One- Mariza (Kindle Edition) Mariza and David's story is one like no other I have ever picked up. From the very start when I read the title the first thing I thought of was how the book shared the name of one of the most poignant country songs ever written. Its even more ironic how the characters shared a common disinterest in the genre as we learn in the first chapter. The two of them are brother and sister by genetics; but chose to make their paths as best friends who share love between them. It seems David has always been the faith based sibling always going to church and having a firm belief in a higher power since childhood. Mariza is the one who was more rebellious in nature questioning her belief in the existence of God or higher power. When they pack the car for a road trip in the first chapter neither one knows that this journey will be way more than what it seems. While it did help Mariza find peace, David's journey was not so simple. He had to learn to believe that there was indeed a plan for him in the darkest of times. He had to address deep rooted fears and see that they are not always as we may see them. I loved this novel. It makes you stop and think about love and the people who are most important to us. That no matter how wrong we are or how far we stray there is an alternative to giving up its called faith!!!
This is an interesting and quick read. Mariza and David are on a road trip to help David excise some demons. Mariza is always helping David with his array of issues. They are as close as siblings can be and are most at ease with the other nearby. I was very intrigued by Mariza and David, their dynamics and interactions make them so likeable, I really wanted to know more about them. Instead, tragedy strikes that leaves David a broken hearted wreck, causing him to make unfortunate decisions. I felt for him, he really was a mess. I’m glad that Mariza helped him out in the little way that she did, helping him cope with the horrors that crossed his path.
The only thing I found frustrating about this story was the lack of police intelligence. I mean, bad stuff happens when they are around, supposedly protecting the people. I felt that they were portrayed very weak and not very smart in their decisions and inner workings at the scenes of investigation. Grrr. If police worked that way in real life, no one would ever get convicted of murder.
Otherwise, I love how Ms Cattabriga’s writing is well thought out and transitions are smooth but heart wrenching. I was only sad that things turned out the way they did with Mariza. She seemed like an amazing strong character that would have made for an interesting read to hang out with her more.
God Blessed the Broken Road By CrystalCattabriga Mariza's story book one What if two children, growing up in the same household manage to grow up with very different religious views. What if life, strips the child with faith from that faith only to encourage the other to accept that God is the one true God. What is the choice between one truck stop and another changes the course of one families future, forever, and with it the lives of all those whom they touched. What if a moment of rage closes doors and with it hope. What if one moment's weakness leaves one person in a situation where the Broken Road of their lives leads to death. What if one person gets a second chance to live the life God ordained. What if this life would not have been lived were it not for a loss of faith, a wrong choice and a horrible judgment call. What if this was your journey? Would you choose to end the journey or to carry on, allowing God to fix your road with forgiveness and purpose? What if….. This is an amazingly touching story, choices and decisions made leave the reader wonder if they would have been able to handle circumstances differently. I highly recommend you take this journey. It is a journey of hope, salvation and purpose. It is the journey of us all. I give this book an 8 ******** rating. It deserves much more for forcing me to take stock of my own life.
A beautiful and sad story, but it is also just the beggining. It had me crying at times, I felt for the characters and there was some heavey stuff (if you are seriously depressed right now, it might not be the best book at the moment). David really goes through some intess stuff when his sister is taken and then makes some bad choices soon after, one of which is trying to kill himself. It is understood what kind of things happens to David's sister when she is taken but none of it is graphic. But, the reader is left with hope and David begins to grew. There is a beautiful spot of healing within the book but I don't want to spoil it. *Spoiler alert* Clearly the character is still healing because he wants to hurt those who hurt his sister (normal for someone in his posistion but not a good thing) and he is just getting his feet under him when it ends. *Spoiler ends* One this I wish had been done differently was when David talks about all the mistakes he did in his life, it sounds like he is talking about more than just what happened with his sister so I would have liked some ellaboration on that. Other than that, there were some typos and spelling/grammar problems. But, this was a good read and I would like to get the other books in this series when they come out.
In exchange for an honest review, I received this book for free through the Goodreads First Reads Giveaway.
Crystal Cattabriga starts the God Blessed the Broken Road series off with a bang! The story of Mariza pulls the reader in and won't let go until the end.
David, who up until recently has been the positive, faith driven younger brother, has slipped into a funk. Mariza, being his older, protective sister, decides that what the two need is a trip to snap him out of his depression. What ensues has twists and turns that will have the reader going, "NO!"
The trip starts out badly, on a night in which the rain is coming down so hard Mariza can barely see the road. She won't let that deter her though, not when she needs to help her brother. David has always gone to church, been positive in his faith and his God, but lately he isn't the same. He seems to have lost his way.
This journey will test David's faith in ways he never thought possible.
Will David's God abandon him when he needs him the most? Will David chose life's hard path or easy path? You'll have to read the book to find out!
I was not paid for this review. The opinions stated here are my own and were not swayed in any way.
Crystal writes in the Children's Books, Young Adult, and Religion & Spirituality genres. This isn't my "usual" genre to read but her book Saving Bobby is on my Kindle TBR list so when Crystal got a hold of me to read and review this book I gladly jumped at the chance. God Blessed the Broken Road Series are short books (print length is 106 pages). While reading it it seems to be much longer though. So much happens in this book about a brother and sister on a road trip together. Mariza is David's older sister. For brother and sister they are very close friends. She is taking this road trip to bring him out of a depression and back to his faith. Until tragedy strikes on there trip. This book reads like a true story. A very sad true story. But in the end it was Mariza who helped David move on and start to live again knowing there was a purpose to his life. This is a very inspirational book for for teens and adults alike. A very enjoyable read.
This is the first book in the Broken Road series by Crystal. The story is a heart wrenching story that is very plausible in the world today. This is a very fast paced page turner that will leave you in tears. The story begins with a stunning prologue, then ensues a very entrapping series of events that happen to David and Mariza.
Mariza and David are very close brother and sister who's parents are divorce. Their Dad never remarried and mother did. David is going through some emotional depression, although we don't get a lot of background about what it is. Mariza decides to take David on a vacation to Colorado to try to help him turn his emotional problems around. Through a series of dramatic events that happen leaves David crying "WHY" to god. The ending is a killer. I cried like a baby!!! I give this book a four star review!
David and Mariza, brother and sister, take a trip together that will leave their relationship forever changed. When David loses his faith, he really loses it all. As a matter of fact, he doesn't do anything halfway, and that's a problem. Whether it's lashing out in anger, drinking, or taking someone else's prescription pain pills, he's determined to do it all at full speed.
I really enjoyed the tale, and I look forward to reading more. My only criticism would be that there was a bit that was just unrealistic. The police wouldn't take a civilian around to crime scenes for one thing. Also, some segments were just a bit abrupt, and it pulled me out of the story. A little bit of editing would make this a 5-star book, in my opinion. But I did enjoy it very much, and I look forward to reading more of the journey. Very well done.
From the start of this book, I was hooked. Mariza and David are brother and sister. Mariza decides that taking a road trip will help heal her brother from whatever is making him lose his way in life. On their trip, something happens that changes David. David's life is now pushed to the limit. He's bitter and he will stop at nothing to get back what was taken from him, but is it too late. His faith is lost and he finds himself at the edge. Can he be saved in time? Will God bless David's broken road? Find out what happens in this truly remarkable twist and turn book. It will leave you shocked, sadden, and finding yourself with hope and love all at the same time. I can't wait for the next book in this series....
After reading and absolutely loving Crystal Cattabriga's "Saving Bobby" I couldn't wait to read her 1rst installment of "God Blessed the Broken Road".... As I started to read I was struck by the overwhelming dynamics in which Crystal took her character's through faith, love, disappointment and a strength with which only God could give.... I was truly touched Mind, Body Soul and Spirit by this Breathtaking Read....it left me more than satisfied and on the other hand wanting more.... Once again Crystal Cattabriga has taking her readers through a range of emotions, that promises to leave an everlasting grip on your very soul and within your heart, sonrisa....Gracias for allowing me the privilege of once again experiencing your talents Crystal Cattabriga.... God Bless the Broken Road book 1 by Crystal Cattabriga
My thoughts on the book God Bless The Broken Road by Crystal Cattabriga was absolutely amazing. The journey that David and Mariza was a supposed to be a getaway in which they would be together and that hopefully Mariza could bring David out of his depressive state. Unfortunately something happens that threatens to rip their lives apart. Is David strong enough to face it or does he need the help from his sister to get through this situation and to come out stronger in the long run. I am really looking forward to continuing this journey with Crystal has she continues this wonderful and amazing series. I recommend that everyone follows this journey with me.
I’ve always wanted a brother, someone to fight with, someone to look up to and someone who would take care of me and not judge me. God Blessed The Broken Road is one of the most beautiful stories I’ve read. It describes the brother – sister relationship between David and Mariza in a beautiful way. The connection they have, the problems they face are relatable to everyone out there. Though a bit sad, its an amazing read! It keeps you on the edge thinking what would happen next... It makes you want to re-think about life and if there might be a higher purpose for us after all.... This book is about second chances, letting go and finding your true purpose.. Amazing, Inspirational and Emotional... Must read!!
This is the first book of the God Blessed the Broken Road Series. This story is about Mariza and her brother David. They have a bond like no other, a bond that is stronger than life itself. They have always been their for each other, and as this journey of theirs begins, there are twists of fate that neither of them would have ever expected. Will they be able to get through this tragedy? Which road will be chosen? Ones faith will be tested, but what will the outcome be? I recommend this short read to everyone, no matter their beliefs, but I suggest you have a box of tissues handy. Can't wait to read the rest of the series. You never know what life's plan is!
Wow, another amazing book by this amazing author. Mariza and her brother David are about as close as siblings can get. When David is in a slump, she is there to do anything to lift his spirits. This particular time, they decide on a road trip. Only, this road trip doesn't get far. Along the way, they pull into a rest stop, and are told by officers to stay there. Mariza goes to get a drink, and never comes back. David does everything he can to find her, but loses his faith. This story is heartfelt, caring, and loving. My heart breaks with the characters, you feel the pain with them. You definitely do NOT wanna miss this one! Can't wait for book 2! 5 of 5 stars!!
In this introductory short story we are thrust into the world of David and Mariza. They have a seemingly normal brother/sister relationship that evolved from years of trials and tribulations in their faith, mainly David's. Little to they know that the trip they are about to embark on is going to change both of their lives forever. This fast paced story is easy to read and hard to put down. The author captures your attention with her vivid details, leaving you wanting to read more of her work. I would recommend this short story to anyone who likes to read inspirational stories :)
