Ten years ago, Rez met the love of his life on Valentine's day. For ten years he's waited for phone calls, texts, emails, or the brief visits and stolen moments of time before his lover is taken away again. Ten years to the day he has waited, ever hoping, that eventually his lover will come home to stay …
I’m an ordinary working woman with aspirations to be a writer. Am slowly but surely getting there My tastes obviously lean toward men doing naughty things to other men, and while I occasionally stray into the fantastical, generally I stick to the here and now. Nothing terribly remarkable about me: I like pop (soda), storms, and gleefully mashing the keyboard until a story comes out.
This story takes place in the same world as Opposite Day, which we reviewed a couple of weeks ago. Rez, the star of this story, is the partner of tattoo artist Brody from the other story, but beyond me realizing the name sounded familiar, you certainly do not need to read them together. This is just fine as a stand-alone.
Rez has been putting up with his CIA boyfriends erratic attentions for ten years. It’s been ten months now since he last saw him, but they do communicate via text. However it’s Valentine’s, the night they met, their anniversary, and he hasn’t even got an answer to his morning “I love you” text. He’s feeling a bit down, but such is the life of the boyfriend of a super spy. However he’s about to get a pleasant surprise when Chip shows up in time to celebrate their anniversary.
This is about two hours in the life of these men. Chip gets home around 11:00 and it ends around 1:00, but you do learn a fair bit about their relationship. Chip is seven years older and it seems that Rez was the pursuer in their relationship once they met. Chip kept waiting for Rez to get bored and frustrated with a part-time boyfriend, but he stuck it out, and now maybe he’ll get his reward. I had to give Rez credit. Would I patiently wait ten months for my boyfriend to show up for possibly only a night and be off again? Not likely. Also, I’ve never worked for the CIA, but I think the super-secret James Bond type is less and less common and there are more paper pushers, but I’ll give Chip the benefit of the doubt.
So this was a cute little story, it was quite romantic with Rez willing to wait for his man, but I had to take a partial grade off for age confusion. They say it’s ten years since they accidentally met on Valentine’s Day, and Rez notes he’s 31. But then later, he claims to have been 19 when they met. It seems they were together right from the start, so it wasn’t a case of meeting at 19 and then two years later taking up together, so that had me doing math on a piece of paper to see if this made sense. Don’t make me do math authors. I’m not a math fan.
I was quite content with the story length on this one. They finally get their HEA and this is another where I don’t feel overly compelled to know what happens next, you just sense they will have a normal life and be happy, the end. But despite the age issue, when you’re in the mood for a super cute sweet short about a guy with patience galore, who finally gets his man, it’s a nice quick read.
This is part of the Kiss Me Quick Valentine bundle. In this very short story, Rez has been with Chip for ten years, understanding that the nature of loving a CIA spook means random time spent together, never knowing when or where his lover will be home, or for how long. This Valentine’s Day marks their ten year anniversary but Rez is sitting home alone. He had cleaned the apartment and himself, dressing nice and waiting, only to realize at 10:45 PM that Chip wasn’t going to be there. He is sitting in the dark, contemplating sadness, when Chip shows up. While the story is very short, it is a scene, a glimpse, into what you do for love, and what makes it work. Rez’ very palpable sadness when Chip doesn’t answer about being able to stay more than one day radiates off the page. This is a sweet, well-written Valentine short that did make me smile.
I enjoyed this short read. I felt like a brief, but complete scene out of a much longer movie...I liked these two characters. What stood out to me was the degree of devotion Rez had for his partner, committing himself fully to a relationship that was made up of a string unpredictable, brief encounters over 10 otherwise long and lonely years...
His love and patience was finally rewarded in this sweet, sexy and romantic story
A cute little sequel to Opposite Day featuring Brody's friend Rez, although it can also be read as a stand-alone story. It is Valentine's Day as well as their ten year anniversary, and Rez is waiting for his CIA boyfriend, wondering if he'll even contact him...
It was a sweet short story. I really respected Rev for waiting for Chip and committing to him for 10 years even knowing that they would only have sporadic moments together because of Chip's work. The ending although predictable was very nice.
