This play is such a joy, and I'm not sure why so many people have rated it so low. Well, I have a guess. I would guess that they are reading it as a piece of "serious" literature rather than imagining how it could be onstage presented for its intended audience, which is young children.
I would absolutely love to see a puppet designer’s take on all the fantastic and imaginative puppet characters! I appreciate how it doesn’t shy away from issues like violence in a city neighborhood, fleeing a homeland, and the death of a loved one, but rather presents them in a way that young children can understand.
Jose is a brilliant playwright. This is a great play for young children that deals with death in a way they can grasp, and gives a wonderful message about how to continue the legacy of loved ones. Also a great celebration of Guatemalan heritage.
It was way too ridiculous to take seriously. For example "Bi Plane Pair of Shoes" is an actual character. I would have enjoyed it more if it was a bit more serious.
