Not being a professional psychologist, but having a dog in the fight by being one of those 'lucky ones', this has been a valuable insight personally. Most people my age who grew up in the 60's had no idea why reading came so hard and most just gave up.
The understanding gained by recent studies has helped immensely in that new learning strategies can be developed to work around some barriers.
The work they covered in the phonological areas of dyslexia was especially useful. There was a time I thought I was going deaf because I couldn't understand what people were saying.
My wife says it's a man gene. Now I've got the perfect excuse.
Seriously though, there are ways to overcome any barrier in life and most don't include drugs. After reading some of the other reviews, I realize that this is not an exhaustive study, but essential still the same. This book focuses on early detection and commonsense approaches to a complex issue.
