As I have always been interested in history, I was very happy when I discovered this beauty. It's a real big book but it doesn't feel like it has +800 pages because the writing style is easy to read and the pace is perfect. Although you have so many different characters appearing in the story, the focus is on what happens during the time and place surrounding them and not so much on what is going on in their lives. I loved the fact that the setting was changing quickly and that numerous historical incidents are mentioned. It was amusing and entertaining to follow the nutcracker and "watch him" get himself into the most hilarious, dangerous, boring or interesting situations. He is on the Titanic as it sinks during its virgin voyage, he is there when Martin Luther King delivers his historical speech "I have a dream", he witnesses the fall of the Berlin wall, and so on and so forth. If you want to brush up on your historical knowledge of the 20th century (mainly European history), then this is your book!

For me, this is one of the books that has stayed with me for a very long time. It basically covers the whole of the 20th century through the eyes of a nutcracker that is made in the year 1900 and gets back to his original owner at the turn of the millennia. I liked how the chronicles the event of the century, it mostly focuses on German events and what kind of views the Nutcracker has on these situations.
