I loved this book especially storyline – The book starts with Lyla Mercar (16) excited to be part of the cheerleading squad. It's the best and worst day of her life. Her mom decides to move to Salem, MA to start over after a big loss. That makes Lyla the new girl in town, in a new school and she has to make new friends. But Salem is a strange little town and there are rumors about her family and their past in the town. When she meets her uncle Nathan and her cousins Hana and Sage, she understands why everyone is talking about the Mercers. Everything changes for Lyla when learns all about her family history including details about her ‘mark’. Deaton created a great story with so much potential for the series.

First Thoughts:

The summary of this book intrigued me, I felt that it had potential for both a creepy and thrilling feeling and I was right. Throughout this entire book there is like a dark haze holding over everything, and with that comes an emotional rollercoaster. At many points in this book I felt my heart ache alongside Lyla’s, it made me feel angered and then happy. It was like I never got a break on just one emotion; they interchanged like clockwork and by the end I was both physically and mentally drained and while some people might find that a negative aspect I absolutely loved it! I loved that a book could even do that, to make me feel. What I enjoyed the most had to be the description itself, I felt the author was able to grasp the scenery of Salem; such a famous and historic city. And while I’ve never been there and didn’t even know much about it except for the Blaire Witch trials I felt by the end of the book I knew more; like perhaps I was taught history without the boring factor. And the description also was just the right amount, like when it came to describing both the scenery and the characters I felt it wasn’t too much. I’ve read some books where the description was just so overwhelming; too much but this wasn’t one of them. The story itself was intriguing and action packed. Though I wouldn’t classify this as a thriller per-se I would say there is quite a bit of action, spread out just evenly enough to allow the slower and less intense parts to blossom. I really loved the idea of the story though it isn’t all completely fresh there were parts that were created from a world of pure imagination. And the conflict between the characters weren’t always by the book either; I felt that the tension between certain characters had a new feel about it and that it created a whole new depth to this book. As for the characters themselves I felt that they were all full of life, there were of course the more minor characters that didn’t feel as real but every book has that, not every character deserves the lime-light. But I really thought the characters that were of the most importance in this book each had a distinct personality and I felt that if put into reality they could really be someone. As for the plot in this book it was right on track, every point was hit and even though the conflict wasn’t fully solved it was enough to end this first book in the series. I felt that the ending was really dark and fully explained, like it foreshadowed or hinted at what was to come but didn’t reveal exactly what was going to be involved in the process of solving their problems. Another thing I really enjoyed about this book was that the fact that the love wasn’t rushed, it had bumps and realism to it; like they knew they were attracted to each other but was unsure of how to proceed further. And while I do enjoy book where characters fall in love quickly (Just recently started to enjoy this due to some author’s execution of it) a lot of books can’t pull it off; they make it feel so fake. So I really enjoy books where the love is more fore-longing and complicated in ways that each and every one of us could relate to. Some issues that I had potentially found were the fact that some of the scenes seemed disorganized, like perhaps things were forgotten and characters proceeded forward without put into consideration of something previously happening; but to be honest I think it was on purpose, perhaps the character themselves were trying to forget. One other thing was that at times I felt the character reacted wrong to certain situations like if you were put into that situation you would feel different but also in the end you must consider that each and every one of us reacts differently to certain situations and this character is a person in itself so I really didn’t have a problem with that either. But I really enjoyed this book all around, the feel and haze it had throughout the entire book had me staying up way past the moon’s rising.

Goodreads Summary:

Lyla Mercer’s life changed the moment her dad was murdered, and again when she heard that she could be next. Forced to move to Salem for safe keeping, Lyla soon discovers her family has a dark history in the small town, and when a glossy black moon appears on the back of her neck she becomes newest part of that legacy. Her family is marked and being hunted, but Lyla may be the weapon they need to survive. Lyla attempts to ignore the danger, pretending to be normal, but whispers and rumors follow her everywhere. Caleb has secrets to keep about his family that rival her own. Until recently, her father's murderer has managed to keep his true identity a secret, but when Lyla uncovers the truth about him, nobody is safe, especially her.

Last Thoughts:

I absolutely enjoyed this entire book, I loved the description the best and how all of the ideas were presented thoroughly and I never once got confused. I would recommend this to any person who enjoys a nice dark feeling book and to those who have a passion for the elements and the use of Wiccan. Also I would definitely recommend this for anyone who enjoys a good book to read on a rainy day, this definitely has the right elements to compliment the weather. I was fortunate enough to be able to read over half this book while it was raining; it was perfect. But I wouldn’t recommend this book if you’re seeking a thriller or a hard core romance; this isn’t like that. Though there is romance throughout the entire book and it does play a key element in this book the main ideas and plots don’t revolve around that. In the end I enjoyed every second of this book and cannot simply wait for the second book, “A History Renewed”. This is definitely an author you need to look into and check out; this is exactly the kind of book that gets looked over too often.

Lyla came home with great news, not knowing that she was in for the worst. Her dad was killed, run over by another driver, Lyla couldn't bear the thought that her and her mom were going to have to keep going on in life without him. But they had to somehow, now her mom was handling her dads business at the office but with a turn of events Lyla finds herself having to move from chicago to live in a house her dad left for them in Salem, Massachusetts. But losing her friends wasn't the only thing that happened now she finds out that her dads side of the family was hiding a family secret that will change her life either for the best or the worst. And her uncle tells her that all of his family members that are dead were actually murdered, including Lyla's dad. Now Nathan's coven is asking her to go into battle with them against the person who killed her father and their family members.

Lyla was an excellent character she was her moms rock she tried everything she could to make her mom smile and not think about the bad things, wanting to care for her and help her mom keep on going after her dad died. So that was really nice of her. Some of the time I found her a little bratty but then again I knew why, her dad did die and now her whole life was changing right in front of her eyes.

I really felt bad for her mom she was the one having a harder time recovering after the loss of her husband. And that made me sad. But I loved her she was a great character also. I felt the same way for Nathan he was so lovable, sweet and he tried everything he could to take care of Lyla he acted like he was her father and wanted nothing to happen to her cause he was the only one left who could do that.

I liked the names the author chose for some of the characters especially Hana's cause I thought the name actually suited her. Hana reminded me a little bit about myself because she was really brave and confident. No matter how much she got taunted she tried not to let anything bother her.

The names for the powers they each possessed were very interesting. I really enjoyed Caleb's character I thought he fit really well in the book and his relationship with Lyla was perfect it grew more throughout the book and that was what I loved about it.

I really liked the writing style of the author and I liked that she chose to write about witches and the salem trials while adding her own twist to it. I am glad that I got the opportunity to read this book because I definitely did enjoy it

A Marked Past by Leslie Deaton is the first book in the Mercer Legacy series. Lyla Mercer seems to have it all, she’s popular, she’s on the cheerleader team and to top it all off, she has a great relationship with her parents, especially her dad. Everything is perfect in her life, well, until one fateful day in the breath of winter when her life changes forever. Lyla’s father, her best friend in the world is tragically killed in a freak accident. Despite her despair, Lyla knows that she must be strong for her mother, even if her mother now inexplicably wants to leave their life behind in Chicago and move to Salem, a place which Lyla’s father once called home. Lyla is upset about leaving behind the memories which she shared with her father in her hometown; exploring the streets, going to the baseball game and the talks which they shared with each other in the comfort of their home, now that would all be left behind, just as her father had left. It would soon be just a distant memory. Despite the heartache of saying goodbye to Chicago, Lyla and her mother relocate to Salem. Being the new girl is obviously difficult, how about adding her family’s history to the mix? A family, whose roots and Salem go deep. In Salem, Lyla is faced with family secrets, family secrets which could have something to do with her father’s untimely death and put the life of her uncle, and cousins (whom she has just met) in jeopardy, as well as herself. The Mercer’s are all marked and there is no escaping destiny.

A Marked Past had promise, but I was unable to connect with the book in the way that I had hoped. The book starts off rather slowly, and quite honestly doesn’t really pick up until well past half way through. The story at times was repetitive. I kept wondering how many times Lyla could possibly run upstairs to her room and kick off her shoes with Hana (her cousin) following right behind. Also, the story of her family’s history was retold again and again. Cutting the repetitive history out could have quickened the pace of the story. I did however connect with Lyla’s character. I sympathized with her pain and welcomed her growing relationship with her cousin’s and uncle. Also, I did enjoy the addition of her cousins (Sage and Hana) and the way in which layers were added to them. I also believe that the progression of Lyla’s and Hana’s powers was well handled. It was a slow build and I found myself guessing what they would discover next.
Lyla’s love life however, fell short. Lyla was too quick to declare her love for Caleb and to say that she would virtually risk her life to protect him. I did not understand where these emotions came from, especially since she had not interacted with him often nor had many scenes with him. Given this matter, the character of Caleb was not connectable and their relationship seemed disjointed.

Deaton’s intro into the Mercer Legacy series may not necessarily be the perfect story, but what is? A Marked Past shows promise and Deaton can build upon the characters and the development of the story in the coming books. I will consider giving the rest of the series a try, and I Iook forward to discovering the path which Lyla and her cousins take.

First things first, I received a free copy of this book by the author (via goodreads.com group Shutup and Read) for a fair and honest review.
Now what to give this book in rating. This book, to me, was a better then average read. So I am giving it four stars.
There are some great parts to this book, and some not so great parts. I will try to share what I felt were the best and the not-so-best.
I loved the way the writer unraveled the story. The detailed descriptions, and the fullness of the characters.
It was easy to imagine myself inside the town of Salem, sitting in the classrooms, listening to the teachers. I could hear the crunch of the gravel at the church, smelling the pines, and the feel the cool spring air.
It takes a true talent to transport the reader into another world using only words. Kudos to Leslie Deaton for the use of her talent.
The characters (be they good or evil) were relatable. You could see the good and bad in just about everyone in the town.
The details added to the characters helps make the town come alive. Who didn't have at least one teacher like Madame Dorsey with ...'had a helmet of light brown hair that curled in around her face, and she wore way too many floral prints.'
I enjoy books with a good vs bad battle, and is a book has that covered with good villains, good heroines/heroes and combat battle scenes that were page-turning-exciting.
Now for the maybe not so good part. The emotional ups and downs, mostly downs of this book.

This is a good book, the writing is wonderful, the characters are endearing, I just wish it had something of a happier note to end on.
So do I recommend it?
Let me ask you this, Why do you read fantasy fiction?
Is it for an emotional ride with 'good vs bad' battle and a tear jerking experience?
Is it for romance, lighthearted story line with a feel good ending?
If the first, then 'yes' this is a book you will want to read.
If the second, then maybe you should skip this one.

Review:

I got a copy of A Marked Past from the author for a fair and honest review...so here goes. Lyla is a typical 16 year old from a good home with loving parents, cheerleader, boyfriend the whole shebang until her father is killed and her world falls apart. Her mother moves them from the Chicago suburbs to her father's family home in Salem. It's here she learns her family secrets, that her father didn't die in an accident but was killed by a man hunting her family since the witch trials. Lyla also learns about her own power and she must learn to use it to keep them safe or they are next. All Lyla wants is to live as a normal teen but her family legacy make that impossible.

I have to say I was surprised by how much I liked this book, I started reading and as soon as I saw the word cheerleader I cringed and thought "oh gawd another YA book I am gonna hate..." and if I am honest it did start out that way. The first couple of chapters dragged and I almost gave up reading, until they moved to Salem and you meet Nathan and the rest of Lyla's family and learn some of the history of their magic and the price the family has had to pay for it.

I actually really liked the character of Lyla, Ms Deaton actually wrote her as a typical teenager. Sometimes whiny, sometimes selfish and sometimes I wanted to smack her but that's what made it more realistic for me, her relationships with her friends, her family and her boyfriend were what I expected in a 16 year old. After the first couple of chapters the plot moved at a good pace that kept me turning pages to find out what happened next. I liked the world Ms Deaton created where everything wasn't black and white and the good guys don't always win. I will grab the next book in this trilogy as soon as it comes out I want to know what what comes next for Lyla and the crew.

♥ ♥ ♥ ♥ 4/5 I really enjoyed it.

“Enticing” is my first reaction, followed quickly by “smoothly written, empathetic, and a rockin’ story line.” What I love about this book is the author’s easy way of sliding into the heart, mind and soul of the protagonist, fifteen-year-old Lyla Mercer, who has unexpectedly and horribly lost her dad in a pedestrian/vehicular accident, and now has to move from the Chicago suburb in which she has lived her entire life to move to the old family homestead in-of all spooky places-Salem, Massachusetts. Only in the best YA novels can authors achieve this looking out from inside point of view in a first-person narrative, and Author Leslie Deaton accomplishes this admirably. I’m so thankful this is only the first of a series, because now I have more to anticipate. (smile)

But that’s not all to love in this book! There’s generational magick, and murder, and mysterious symbols. There’re powers, and talents, and a plethora of the paranormal. But foundationally, there is an excellent story with characters delineated in depth, so that the reader finds empathy easy and fulfilling, belief in the characters and the plot easy to master, and an accomplished prose style, all of which will make readers eager to return to these characters and their joys and tribulations in further novels in this series.

A marked past was given to me for an honest review. Lets start with the pro's of the book. First it was creative enough to be set apart from other witch books I have read recently. Second it had alot of action and just enough romance to make it believable. It isnt like other YA novels were the mc falls in love right from the begining. Thirdthe main characters werent that annoying sometimes MC heriones can really get on my nerves, But Lyla was alright other then sometimes when she decided to keep important information to herself that could potentially harm others, I am willing to look past her faults. :) On to the cons! First the plot was just way to predictable I felt like I knew what was going on right when she moved to Salem and it didnt leave me guessing at all. Second I didnt understand why Nathan had to be killed off in the end because Hana was able to revive Lucas why couldnt she save Nathan? Other then that I didnt have any issues with the book. I gave the Book three stars because I felt that it could have been a little better but if you have time to waste then you could waste it reading this book and not feel like you need the last two hours back from your life. :)

3.5/5 Stars

I don't think this book is 3 stars.. but it's not quite 4 stars either. I think the story line was really good but the main character fell short for me. She was quite annoying at some points and her choices bugged me quite a bit. Also, some of the scenes weren't necessary and dragged out far too long. Another thing that bothered me was the setting of the story. I've lived in Massachusetts my entire life and the whole story revolved around two roads in Salem, MA and it was annoying.. especially since I could picture them.

The formatting of the eBook I received was also very distracting but I managed to make it through the book.

I will definitely read book two to see what happens with the Mercers and because I think it was a refreshing look at witches.

I was given this book by the author via goodreads group for an honest review.
A Marked Past is a wonderful read! I love the storyline – The book starts with Lyla a teenager in high school, so excited to be part of the cheerleading squad and to tell her dad the good news of making the team, however she never gets to as he died that same day. Her mom is grief stricken and decides to move them to their family home in Salem, MA to start over. Lyla is in a new town, new school and has to make new friends, all while there are rumors about her family. She meets her uncle Nathan and her cousins Hana and Sage, and learns all about her family history including details about her ‘mark’. She no longer has a ‘normal’ teenage life like she had in Chicago. Soon, she learns someone is after her and wants her family dead. Who can she trust, is she strong enough to fight?
This book has witches, magic, history, and even some romance. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

I read this as an ebook. This is roughly the first ebook I read and so that made it a bit different.
Second I find that while I like magic, fairies, supernatural, and sometimes witches(harry potter) I do not like spells, circles, candle -the "satanic" side of witches. This book just touched on it but something I would normally not read.

I found this book sad. It starts and ends with death and funerals. there is a move so soon, and a teenage girl uprooted and placed into a new town and with a new family she didn't know existed.
This was definitely a young adult book complete with teenage love, high school friends and the coming of "magic powers".

I liked the book. I liked the magic powers. I liked the details to description that the author uses. A very good book over all and something I would let my kids read :)

Great book! The characters are soooooo real. Sometimes annoying, sometimes whiny, sometimes selfish and always self absorbed, Lyla so so realistic to me. Her friends, her family and her boyfriend were exactly what I expected from an average 16 year old girl. After the first few chapters the story moved at a fast pace that kept me up past my ususal lights out. I had to find out what happened next so I just kept reading. I really liked the history of Salem that Leslie Deaton created, some of it sounded acurate and some was purely created in her imagination. It's a place where the good guys don’t always win but they never gove up either. Think Harry Potter meets Twilight. Great characters, great storyline, great adventure. I'll be watching for the next two books in this trilogy as soon as they come out. I have to know what happens next for Lyla and the crew.

I enjoyed reading A Marked Past by Leslie Deaton quite a bit. The first half of the book went a little slow for me, despite that the second half brought answers to questions I had. I was a little disappointed with the ending, but that was because I was invested with the characters by that point. I look forward to reading more from this great author!

Starting at the top, in reference to the cover, I like it. I also think that the title for the story is catchy. The moon and the font used for the title are nice. The girl is a bit hard to see, but it fits the story.

Going to be honest here, and say how I felt about the book from my personal view point.
I have a big problem with how fast the book moved, I did not like how fast it moved in the slightest (I like a little more---in between.) But don't get me wrong, it had some stuff in "between" but to me the "main" story line moved a little too fast. Though a LOT of people enjoy that, I personally didn't. Though I really REALLY enjoyed the detail and expression in it, and the whole aspect of it was well done. Bravo! on that!
But personally I am torn, between liking it and not really liking it.
Let me point out.
When starting off in Chapter One, you meet the young girl, Lyla (which is a beautiful name!) Who is bouncing in the kitchen door and excited as ever after joining the cheering squad! And her mom hearing the news is equally excited, offering when her dad returns to take her to Lou Malnati's for dinnger (which in my head---I personally thought...Red Lobster! So I was on board!)----But (this is where things got off---bad for me--- personally! The happiness lasted about 10 pages (according to my e-book only 9) before they police show up, and BAM her dad is dead. I was like. . . *confused* why did the author make things go so fast? An emotional roller coaster ride!!! That poor girl! "I'm a cheerleader! Go team! My daddy loves me!" To "my dad died the day I made the V-squad." I didn't find that too tasteful, but that is personally stating. Though she did it in a way that was good, the moving at such a rapid pace was what bothered me.
I got a little irritated, that being honest. I didn't have time to fall in love with Lyla, her mother or father before being tossed into the fire pit with them (as to say.) But I continued on, hoping that the author was cleverly leading me into something....mind-boggling! (Which I was NOT disappointed. But continue on for that--->)

The funeral rolled around, and it felt real. But the way Lyla was acting to me...felt a little. Emotionless. Yeah she was "acting" brave for her mom, but the mom was more acting like the child in that case (but I understood why the author when that way.) But the way she did it flowed nicely!
Nothing really major happened, then BOOM! Up to move to Salem, and I found that fast paced.
(Skipping a bit ahead.)
I think (hope I remember correctly) a night after she moved to Salem, she gets a birthmark, finds out about "magic" (without directly being stated---I felt it was indirectly when Nathan was telling her about it. But I have to be honest, my jaw floored....and not in a good way. There was NOTHING in between, no hint, no little wind up just here it is! Now me, once more on a personal level---I wanted there to be a lead up to this point.

Now I understood why the author was doing this, and I believe she did a good job but to be honest---I didn't like that it speed so fast and seemed to be filled with some useless information. But it lead up to what I something exciting. Reading the ending chapter on a gloomy day, it was raining, curled up in bed. I was absorbed until the last word on the page was read and the ending was complete.
And I do have to say, if the rest of the book went like the ending. I would have LOVED this book, but to me due to the fast pace in certain places I have to rate it this...which breaks my heart because it was a good book, and honestly WORTH the read! And I have recommended to a few friends. But I am excited to read the next one, but please dear Leslie just don't move so fast, let me soak up what's all happening.

But thank you for a chance to read this, it really was an enjoyable weekend read.

A big point I forgot to note earlier.
The cover is really cool! I honestly really liked it! Gave me a bit of chills in excitement for what was in it's pages!

For Lyla Mercer, life couldn’t possibly get any better. She has a best friend and a boyfriend who love her and a newly secured spot on the Varsity Cheerleading Squad. Yup, life is darn near perfect. Until a freak, car accident murders her father on her “perfect day”. That one tragedy sets into motion a chain of events that Lyla never could have imagined. The question is, is she ready to accept all that she’s about to learn?

When I started to read A Marked Past, written by Leslie Deaton, I was immediately taken with how skillfully she was able to capture not only my attention but my emotions, as well. From the first sentence of chapter one, I was hooked. However, I wasn’t expecting such an emotional roller coaster ride right from the start. I found myself so wrapped up in the plot and the emotions of Lyla’s story that I actually had to put the novel aside for a few days and take a break because reading it was leaving me ‘emotionally raw’. (Yes, I can really be that big a sap.) Sappiness aside, I have never had a novel affect me that quickly.

The only issue I really had with A Marked Past were the frequent typo’s which occasionally made reading the novel a bit more difficult. However, they were honestly more of an annoyance and slightly unprofessional in appearance than anything else. And truly, in the grand scheme of all things novel related if that’s the only complaint I have (and it is!) then there isn’t much to worry about.

Typo’s aside, I was hooked and invested from line one; I couldn’t wait to sit down each night and read on to uncover more of Lyla’s story. While parts of the plot were fairly easy for me to figure out before they were revealed; there were still plenty of twists and turns to keep me guessing and on my toes.

I found it to be a quick read. The slower a novel is, the more likely it is to lose my interest and A Marked Past was the perfect speed for me. The plot kept moving pretty quickly only slowing down in a few spots and even in the ‘slow spots’ the story held relevant information concerning plot line or characterization.

Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed A Marked Past. I know I’ll reread it again in the future, probably numerous times, which I often do with novels I particularly enjoy. I’m already anxious for the next book, A History Renewed: Book Two of The Mercer Legacy, so I can see how the next ‘chapter’ of Lyla’s life unfolds.

If you are a fan of the House of Night series, written by P.C. & Kristin Cast, A Marked Past (The Mercer Legacy) is a good match. Especially if you found the House of Night series to be a bit more ‘R’ than ‘YA’, A Marked Past is definitely a good place to start.

I received a free copy of A Marked Past, written by Leslie Deaton, to read and review.

I really loved this book. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. I highly recommend this book to everyone.

Lyla starts out in Chicago, IL but after her father’s death, Lyla and her mother move to the Mercer family house in Salem. Her first day of school there she meets her cousin Hana. Hana is being harassed by Lucas, a boy at their school. Lyla wants to protect Hana from Lucas. Hana’s mother used to run the Wiccan shop in town but had died a year earlier in a car accident. They soon become friends. Lyla’s Uncle Nathan explains the family history to Lyla and clues her in to a few surprises including the fact that they are witches.

Lyla meets and falls for Caleb a boy at school who was adopted by the town pastor. His mother went missing and left him and his sister without a home. As the girls and their families get drawn into a war with an enemy that has been trying to kill out the Mercer family for centuries the girls find new surprises along the way for them. Hana and Lyla both find out that Hana’s mother and Lyla’s father were not killed in accidents but were murdered by the same enemy who was pursuing the family over 400 years ago. They soon start receiving their powers and join to try to end this threat to the family and to their coven as well. It all comes down to a fight on graduation night that ends in tragedy and heartbreak for the group. The book ends leaving you wanting to read the next installment.

I enjoyed the plot of this story it was very easy to follow but was not predictable. It had a good pace to it and kept the characters realistic. It had plenty to keep you interested and guessing along the way. The main characters were well written. Lyla and her family and friends were easily likeable. I also liked how even the good guys can get consumed by their revenge or greed and make the wrong decisions just like in real life. The villains in the story were also well written. The scenery and the town were easy to picture in my head. The friendships and romance between the characters was believable and realistic. The ending of the book I felt left off in a good place for the next one. This book shows that even when it is a battle between good and evil everybody pays a price.

All in all this was a great book. At times I couldn’t put it down but unfortunately I had to a few times. I am anxiously waiting for the sequel. Hope it comes out soon!!

Book Review of A Marked Past by Leslie Denton

After the sudden, tragic death of her father, Lyla Mercer and her mother move from their comfortable home of Chicago to cold and dreary Salem. Lyla is not happy about leaving her old life behind as she starts over in Salem. She and her mother move to an old family home left to her by her father. She doesn't understand why her father would want them to live in such a dreary house in such a dreary place. All she wants is her old life back.

When she arrives, she soon meets her uncle (her dad's brother), Nathan, and her cousins, Hanna and Sage, whom she never knew she had. As she gets to know them, she is shown her family history and brought to the realization that it lives on through her. Lyla wishes that she could live a normal life as she did in Chicago, but is quickly shown A Marked Past that demands that she help prevent further destruction of her family.

When she meets Caleb, she is immediately drawn to him as the rest of the community is. He is well liked by all in the community and has been adopted by the Pastor of the oldest church in town. As Lyla learns more about her family's tragic history, she worries not only for his safety but also that he might be mistakenly part of the problem. Is the Pastor really who he is protrayed to be or something more? Can she, Hanna and Nathan break the cycle of family tragedy? Can she live a normal life with the boyfriend that she has fallen so deeply for?

What I thought

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this story since I typically don't read books like this. I thought it was a perfect combination of the life of a typical teenager and her adventures of learning of her Atypical past. Lyla leads a "normal" life of friends, school, prom, and a boyfriend all while developing into the person that she was destined to be through her past. As she learns more about her past, she also learns that the story of her family history continues through her and she must take over where others have left off. The conflicts of the story are fast paced and completely unpredictable as she tries to learn about her gifts and fight to keep her family's future from being destroyed, all while dealing with school and the love life of a teenage. The end left me wanting more and I look forward to reading A History Renewed coming out later this year. I give it 4 out of 5 stars

This is an excellent book.

Lyla Mercer is your typical teenager who loves her boyfriend, hangs out with her best friend and is considered popular. But everything changes when her father is killed in a hit and run, and her mother is so devistated by his death, that she decides they should move from Chicago to Salem. Just like any teenager, Lyla HATES the fact that she has to leave her bestfriend, her boyfriend, and everything she knows and loves.

Once in Salem, she finds it fairly easy to make new friends and even find out that she has family that she had never met or even knew existed.

Then she receives a mark on the back of her neck and along with it, abilities that she would have thought were impossible. But along with her new abilities, she learns that her family has many secrets that need to be kept a secret. Why? Because Lyla learns that her father didn't just die, but that he was murdered, and what could be worse than that? Learning that she, and her entire family could be next on the killers list.

In this book, you find that the "good guys" might be bad, the "bad guy" isn't just bad, he's evil, and Lyla's new boyfriend Caleb just might be caught somewhere in the middle.

I found myself up at all hours of the day unable to put down this book. Leslie Deaton did an amazing job of finding the perfect combination of romance, mystery, nostalgia, and of course, the paranormal. I can't wait to read book to in this series since A Marked Past finishes very well with a nice cliffhanger.

RATING:

5 of 5 hearts. This book does have it's gramatical errors, but nothing you cant overlook. The book itself is excellent. I'll be looking forward to book 2 in the series and any other books Leslie might have on the way as well. Great Job Leslie!

A Marked Past was given to me by the author Leslie Deaton, in exchange for a honest review.

This book starts off sad, the main character Lyla, is a daddies girl, he helps her with her cheer leading and encourages her at life. But the day of finding out that Lyla made the cheer squad, her dad was hit by a taxi and was killed. Now that her father is gone, Lyla's mom can't afford where they are living so they are moving back to Salem, where Lyla's dad left them a house. Lyla doesn't want to move because her friends are all there, that's the house she grew up in, she had just made the cheer squad and her boyfriend will be left behind, but her mother forces her to move. So the Mercer's al have a mark. Lyla's is a crescent moon on the back of her neck and it's blessed by the goddess. Sounds to me like House of Night a little bit.  And they are magic folk. They fight against the Pastor who is a bad guy and try's to kill all the witches.

I really enjoyed this book. There were some slow parts in the middle but I sped right back up.  I liked the characters because they were all strong and had their own personalities and faults.  I lover Lyla because so much bad had happened to her but she still fought thought it. I was/ am still confused about Caleb, I want to believe that he is a good guy but I just have a bad feeling about him for some reason. I'm mad that Nathan died, but I think that he knew that he would so that makes it better but now it's just the three girls left, plus Caleb and his sister if they are indeed good people. I'm looking forward to the second book. Thanks so much Leslie. You are a great author.

A Marked Past
By Leslie Deaton

After Lyla’s father dies in a freak accident her mother moves them to her father’s family home in Salem. Shortly after arriving Lyla’s uncle notices a mark on her neck in the shape of a crescent moon, he tells her that this mark means she will be a goddess among their people, witches. After, he tells Lyla about his family’s history beginning with the Salem witch trials and how they had all been murdered by the same man who is now out to kill Lyla and the rest of her family, dragging her into a four hundred year old battle. All while trying to make it through a new high school and falling in love.
Once I started reading this book I didn’t want to put it down it has fantasy, drama, action, and romance. From watching the relationship between Lyla and her newly discovered cousin Hana form into something akin to sisters or watching her fall madly in love with Caleb the Preacher’s adopted son, the interweaving relationships will keep you involved. If that is not enough for you, you still have a centuries old raving lunatic to deal with. I can’t wait until I am able to read the next book.

Intriguing storyline, awesome art work, and an eerie plot that keeps you up all night waiting for more!

A Marked Past is a MUST read and SHARE.

The story takes place in downtown Salem Massachusetts and you can feel the chill in the air as you flip the pages. Rumored to be the first book in a series of three; A Marked Past: The Mercer Legacy, follows 16 year old Lyla Mercer through her haunting discovery of her family’s ties to the Salem Witch Trials.

Plagued by a series of unexpected events, Lyla finds her family’s roots go deeper than the whispers in the small town. And she is forced to make heart wrenching choices when she discovers the rumors are all true.

I am excited to say that the book looks like the series is headed for greatness. When Deaton started this series I was initially intrigued by Lyla but as the story progressed I became more and more interested in how the storyline would play out. The characters and setting all work together to completely consume the reader, making them a part of Lyla’s world, and letting them experience her journey firsthand.

The book ends on a cliffhanger; leaving you anxiously awaiting the sequel, wondering what will happen next to Lyla, her friends, and her family if they stay in Salem. The next book in the series, A History Renewed: The Mercer Legacy Book 2, is expected to be released in 2012.

I liked this book, I did... but I didn't start liking it until I got to the last 50 pages. Ms. Deaton did an awesome job of portraying Lyla as a typical teenage girl. Her character was definitely believable, which is probably why I found her to be so irritating. I had a really hard time connecting to any of the characters and the relationship between Caleb and Lyla was in no way convincing. I really wish he had been a stronger presence throughout the book because I wanted so badly to care about him. Unfortunately I didn't find myself having much of a reaction to the scenes in the church, because I didn't feel like I knew him. The story line was fascinating but with so much detail it felt like it took forever to read. It wasn't until I started the last four chapters that I was wishing there was more. Overall, I'm thrilled I got the chance to read it and while there may have been parts I wasn't crazy about, the most important thing is that I will definitely be purchasing the next one because I have to know what happens :)

I did enjoy the book and how it closely followed the journey of all involved. It had everything-danger, romance, mystery, and kept me guessing on what would happen next. I do wish it had been more than one book, merely because there is so much happening that it could have easily been two books. It seemed like I was watching a car chase from another car and it was hard to keep up sometimes. There is so much action that, again, I felt it could have been split as to make the book more meaningful. And there were parts, like the dreamscapes and the discovery of Lyla's destiny, that I felt could have been alluded to sooner and I would have liked the book so much more. As it is, I am not entirely sure if I'd read the other book. It would depend on my curiousity to see what happens next is big enough. As it is, read it and see if you like it. Just hang on for the ride, though, and enjoy a debuting author!

A Marked Past is the first book in a soon to be GREAT series. I wasn't sure what to expect after seeing the creepy cover but
I was quite pleasently surprised, with the riveting tale of Lyla Mercer and the dark history of her family.

When Lyla discovers a plot to rid Salem of Mercers, she's forced to chose between defending her family, or fighting to save the boy she loves. In a battle where Lyla is forced to use skills she never knew she had, survival is her only goal.

Well written, fast paced, and a real page turner is how I would classify A Marked Past. As a teen novel, it's told from Lyla's perspective in her own narration and I liked living in her world for a while.

I would recommend this novel to anyone above the age of 11. I'll gladly read the sequel. If it sounds good to you, pick it up. You'll love it.

A Marked Past was a great (and fast) read for me. It kept me interested so much that I actually woke up a few hours early for work one morning and heavily considered not going back to sleep and picking up my kindle to read it. Sleep did win in the long run, but not for long. It did, however surpass me catching up on my Grey's Anatomy so that is definitely saying something.
Leslie's writing style, as well as her ability to create believable characters was very apparent in A Marked Past. I can't wait to read the next in the series and any future books that she may also write. I was so enticed by her story and she kept me interested. With romance, a little mystery, and a great plot this YA novel is a great first from Leslie Deaton.
Keep up the great work Leslie!! I can't wait to read the next one.

Lacey Mercer has a lot to deal with.
Her father died, her mother moved her back to Salem and her uncle told her she's
from a family of witches.

As if that's not enough, he also tells her that there is a man, a former priest, that wants to kill her whole family and that she might be next...

She has to fight for her own survival and also for the survival of a few innocents that has fallen prey to the former priest.
Among these people is a boy, Caleb, her new crush, and Lucas a boy that causes nothing but trouble for her and her family.

On the bright side, she now has some awesome powers to help protect her.

Will Lacey and her cousins be able to protect the people they care for and defeat the former priest?

Just one of the questions I have that makes me want to read the next book.

Wow! I can't tell you how much sleep I lost reading this book, but but I can tell you it was worth it!

I had trouble putting it down. 16 year old Lyla's world is thrown into chaos when she loses her father, and moves from Chicago to Salem. Salem is the home of her fathers ancestors, and so much history that it haunts her every move. She learns that her family is different, marked by magic, and she also discovers there's a man who is hunting them. Her Uncle and cousins try to teach her to fight, but only love can bring out her true powers. Lyla has lost a lot, so when her boyfriend is threathened she will do anything she can to save him. The book reveals, powers, msyteries, history, witches, covens, battles, witch hunters and so much more left to discover. I can't wait for the next book A History Renewed (expected in June 2012).(less)

A Marked Past is a great book. Deaton is a new author so the story is a little rough in places, but it's still a really enjoyable book. Defintely worth the read.

Towards the end, the action picks up a lot, kept me reading into the night. And of course, there was some teen romance - ah, Caleb. AND it's about witches, in Salem, who can resist it? I love the history of Salem, and to have it as past of a YA book just makes it that much better. The main characters are teens so they are totally unpredictable sometimes, making the wrong decisions, only to learn from it in the later chapters. The suspense in this book makes you want to keep reading becuase you HAVE to know more, and even the last page left me wanting more.

I'm definitely looking forward to the next book (June 2012).
