A fascinating and deeply informative read that goes way beyond the normal 'all one race' conclusion. Combines sensitivity with a rejection of 'political correctness'. This blow-by-blow tour of race-related issues across the world, with amazingly apt anecdotes and analogies revealing a wealth of research and life experience, is unlike any other creation book you've ever read. For many, it will make the 'lights go on' - not just about race but the whole biblical 'big picture' of human history. Printed in color.
It's a nice idea, isn't it? One human family. Let's all sit around the campfire and sing kumbaya. Unrealistic, idealistic or overly optimistic? What if the Bible provided evidence of this unity which was matched by scientific evidence? What if, indeed. Here it is. Carl Wieland's brilliant book of theology, sociology and anthropology...so much big words. Well, the author is dealing with some very big concepts. The more scientific ones were harder for me to grasp than the theological ones, but I'm a big picture person and I love God and I loved the message of this book.
I would have given this five stars except that at times I got lost in the sentences, some of which were a bit too complex for me
Open minded people who have not found Jesus yet should read this. Open minded people who have, should also read it.
Excellent, Well written with many, many extremely insightful ideas. The Bible clearly teaches that we are all very closely related, no matter how different we may look from one another. The genetic difference is so small, it is truly negligible. And, more importantly, Wieland skillfully identifies how we must recognize the value of every single human being. He does not shy away from controversy, either. In fact, this is where his most trenchant analysis shines most.
A really good book that gets very deep with the subject of race. Dr. Weiland looks at the subject from the perspective of the Bible, science, politics, economics, culture, history, etc. A very good read.
"One Human Family" by Carl Wieland is an excellent study of human origins. Using scientific understanding and the Bible, he argues for the biblical truth that all of humanity can be traced back to one man, Adam and his wife, Eve. Herein, he discusses many topics related to racism. The book's focus largely concerns the social sciences but includes some talk of the biological sciences. It's often enlightening and encouraging but also regularly disturbing and challenging. Wieland takes the stand that Christianity informs and frees societies rather than hinders and stunts them in their growth. He also argues that science and technology only really flourished in the West, in light of the Reformation. "One Human Family" is written for the layman, but several chapters prove to be more complex and difficult to understand. Highly recommended reading for both teenagers and adults.
8/10. 9.5/10 if you enjoy the social sciences and biological sciences.
A thorough and necessary analysis of our misconceptions of racial inequality, shining a light on many social practices built upon flawed racist thinking. My only complaint is that for a book written primarily to address racial issues the author tells a couple racially insensitive anecdotes that were intended to be illustrative but could have been more carefully worded.
