I wanted to better understand the history behind some of these famous fashion brands and where they came from - I’ve always been curious about YSL (the name itself just seemed so sophisticated) and picked this up.

The book itself did provide some backstory on how Yves began his career, how he started at Dior, and quickly soon started his own line after and touched on some of his major fashion moments and contributions, but I generally found it extremely high level and summary-like, while I wished the content to be more specific, analytical and insightful (perhaps also technical) into why his work was such a big deal.

Kleine handzaam boekje met een korte geschiedenis van de grote Yves Saint-Laurent. Vernieuwer van vrouwenkleding waarmee hij mogelijk heeft bijgedragen aan veranderende sociale positie van vrouwen, slim meeliftte op ontwikkelingen die toch al gaande waren, of een beetje van beide. Geboren en opgegroeid in Algerije (Oran) in een geprivilegieerd gezin, na zijn middelbare school in de mode begonnen bij Dior waar hij op 2 jarige leeftijd als lid van een team aan het hoofd kwam te staan na het overlijden van Dior zelf. Op 24-jarige leeftijd zijn eigen merk gestart omdat zijn ontwerpen te vrij werden voor de behoudende clientèle van Dior.

Veel vernieuwende ontwerpen van Saint-Laurent zijn gestileerde variaties op praktische mannenkleding en/of taboedoorbrekend naaktvertoon. Dit resulteert in zijn sexy androgyne silhouetten en uitstraling. Enkele vernieuwingen van Saint-Laurent:
- Het rechte jurkje: comfortabel en voor iedere dag.
- Het broekpak
- De vrouwen-smoking: Le Smoking
- Het safari-jasje, geïnspireerd op legerkleding uit Afrika
- Doorkijk…blouse (met strik), -jurk
- Mannenpak voor vrouwen met dubbele rij knopen (afgekeken van double breasted voor mannen)
- Het broekpak, jumpsuit

Niet alles is goud dat blinkt… Blijkt dat Saint-Laurent verslaafd raakte aan drank en drugs en last had van depressies. Zozeer zelfs dat levens- en zakelijk partner Pierre Bergé hem privé verlaat (zakelijk niet).

Mówił, że moda przemija, a styl pozostaje. Tego ostatniego nie można z pewnością odmówić jego projektom. Zaczynał jako prawa ręka Christiana Diora, chłonąc wiedzę i szukając własnej możliwości wyrażania siebie poprzez swoje projekty.

Jako dziecko w szkole był szykanowany, poniżany i bity, a jego orientacja seksualna dolewała oliwy do ognia. Przez to stał się osobą zamkniętą w sobie i bardzo wrażliwą. Sytuacja ta sprawiła, iż częściej zamykał się w sobie, stroniąc od otoczenia i uciekając do projektowania, rozwijał swoją pasję.

Zaczął rewolucjonizować modę, zmieniając tradycyjne suknie na smoking. Ubierał kobiety w garnitury i kombinezony, dodając do nich zmysłowe, delikatne tiule, jedwabie i kokardy. Bawił się konwencjami, czerpał ze sztuki, łączył modę damską i męską, demokratyzował dobre krawiectwo, kwestionując tradycyjne podziały i nie zważając na ograniczenia. Szokował, oburzał, inspirował. Każda jego kolekcja była wyzwaniem dla ustalonych norm dobrego smaku, a jednocześnie przyczyniała się do wzmocnienia pozycji kobiety — wyzwolonej, niezależnej, czerpiącej siłę z własnego przełamującego dotychczasowe schematy, wizerunku.

Pozycja, która Wam prezentuje zawiera w sobie ogromną liczbę informacji dotyczącej tego projektanta, opisując jego życie, te brutalne, gorzkie i dołujące momenty, które kilkukrotnie sprowadziły go na dno. Następnie poznajemy jego wielkie powroty i dalszą próbę podbicia sukcesu jego wcześniejszych kolekcji.

Spora liczba zdjęć, ciekawostki, które nie były nam wcześniej znane czy życiowe potyczki, to wszystko tworzy z tej pozycji idealne kompendium wiedzy, dzięki czemu bardziej zrozumiemy fenomen tej marki.

ten tytut przeczytałam już w styczniu i byla to
wtedy jedyna książka, która nie byłaby
lekturą, więc ta odmiana sama w sobie byla
bardzo przyjemna. Ale pomijając to, ta
biografia była chyba jedną z moich
ulubionych z tej serii. Naprawdę interesująca
- dowiedziałam się wielu rzeczy, o których
wcześniej nie miałam pojęcia. A że byla
napisana w przystępny i przy tym wciagający
sposób, to aż miło było czytać i w ogóle nie
czuło się, że przy tym przyswaja się jakąś
wiedzę. No i oczywiście warto tu wspomnieć
o pięknym wydaniu- fotografie i cala szata
graficzna ogólnie naprawdę robią wrażenie!

As an introductory piece to the figure behind the iconic fashion house that is Yves Saint Laurent, I’d say this book is a good start. In a chronological order, it tells the story about how Yves Saint Laurent came into working with Christian Dior and succeeding Dior upon his death, to starting his own fashion house. It also shares about some of the figures key to YSL’s success, Dior as his mentor, his muses and loyal friends as well as a strong and steady partner Pierre Bergé, who handled the financial and business side of things.

This book made my traveling hours just amazing.

so interesting! kinda cool how ysl used to work for dior and saw him as an inspiration. reminds me of how so many big names in fashion have usually worked for other big names in fashion (like virgil abloh worked for fendi and lv but then founded off-white). the pictures printed on this book - omg!! so beautiful, i picked many favourites. definitely wanna read the other ”little book of” books about the brands im interested in.

Pretty informative but I didn’t rly care about the perfume section and I thought it didn’t really need to be in there even if they did sell really well. Na het boekje ‘Little book of Dior’ was ik ook heel benieuwd naar dit boekje over Yves Saint Laurent. Ben je benieuwd wat ik van dit boekje vond? Lees dan hieronder verder.

Vrijwel iedereen kent het modemerk Yves Saint Laurent (YSL) wel. Of het nou gaat om tassen, parfum of make up, Yves Saint Laurent is net zo bekend als Dior. De overgang van Dior naar Yves Saint Laurent is eigenlijk vrij natuurlijk. Yves Saint Laurent heeft namelijk eerder voor Dior gewerkt.
Het boekje is prachtig uitgewerkt met mooie plaatjes. De stijl van Yves Saint Laurent wordt hierdoor voor de lezer nog duidelijker.
Hoewel Yves Saint Laurent zeker veel heeft bijgedragen aan de mode, en een plekje in deze ‘’Little book of’’ serie zeker heeft verdient, bleef er iets wat mij niet helemaal kon raken. Ik bewonder het werk van Yves Saint Laurent, maar zijn levensverhaal heeft mij helaas niet zo weten te raken zoals die van Dior dit wel deed.
Ondanks dat dit verhaal mij niet helemaal wist te raken, heb ik genoten van alle mode en kunst in dit boek.

A well-written and seemingly faithful account of the life of someone who was ultimately not as interesting as I had hoped he'd be. I would have liked a greater focus on his design language and the inclusion of more reference images.
