They had been pen pals for years, but had never met. Then Mandy came to visit Janet and wished she hadn’t. At the airport, Mandy was met by Janet & her parents but instead of going to Janet's house ---they took her to Janet's grandmothers dreary, desolate farm -the nurse had left and the family had to stay a couple of days and care for dear old (DEAD A YEAR AGO) Granny – until the new nurse arrives in a couple of days. I couldn’t put this one down, took me less than four hours --- the ending was almost beyond comprehension and nothing I expected and/or suspected! Thanks to Troy Public Library ---they had at least three available for check out!

You suspect things right away but who would ever think...? A really enjoyable read.

This was a fun mystery about a girl going to meet her pen-pal for the first time who ends up in strange and deadly circumstances. I had never heard of the author (assumed she might be related to Walt but that doesn't appear to be the case).

This novel has a bit of a YA novel feel to it--it reads a bit like a Scooby Doo novelization and I don't really mean that in a bad way. The novel does start pretty slowly--the first 100 pages or so (out of 160) mostly involve the main character Mandy becoming increasingly uncomfortable with her pen-pal and her mysterious family. That being said, I was not uninterested or put off by the slow boil. Things do ratchet up nicely in the finale, though, and the ending has a simple but interesting and realistic twist. In the very end everything is sorted out as the police question Mandy and explain everything to her (and the reader)--again, very Scooby Doo.

The prose was lively and captivating. I will be keeping my eye out for more books by this author--though it looks like she has faded into relative obscurity as my local library system had nothing by her. Maybe I will run into her again in another Ebay lot.

Excellent suspense book. DMD was one of my favorite female authors "back in the day." Now I find her female protagonists too naive.
