Reid Family #4

Let Love Find You

Rate this book
London society has its very own Cupid. Renowned horse breeder and occasional matchmaker Devin Baldwin pairs eligible young ladies with suitable gentlemen based on his theory of animal magnetism. Unafraid of ruffling the ton’s feathers, this darkly handsome Cupid doles out tips for bettering one’s chances of meeting a mate that are as pointed as the love legend’s sharpest arrows!

Lovely Amanda Locke, the daughter of a duke, is everything a nobleman could desire, yet she enters her third Season still searching for a match. Gossipmongers’ tongues are wagging, and her mystified family is considering drastic measures to find her a husband. But the insufferable advice of this Cupid fellow is the last thing Amanda wants.

When an earl passionate about horses becomes the target of her husband hunt, Amanda knows it’s time to overcome her fear of riding. With her sister-in-law Ophelia hastening the romance along by arranging riding lessons, Amanda is soon taking instruction from infuriating Devin Baldwin. Astonishingly, in her daily encounters with Devin—who treats her as an ordinary young woman, not a prize to be won at the marriage mart—Amanda experiences passion for the first time. Now, her search for a match takes her in an unexpected direction as she finds herself falling in love with Cupid himself.

"Let Love Find You" is the story of Amanda and Devin.
Basically, our h has been out for three seasons now, and yet has not found a husband. Her SIL Ophelia enlists the help of our H, also known as "Cupid"- who is famous for his new ideologies to match couples.
Initially there is a lot of friction- as the h doesnt stop talking and the H doesnt stop chiding. Soon as other men decide to shower their attention on her, the H decides to take her under his wing- challenging her on every step but ultimately ends up falling for her.
Honestly, this was super boring. The "love story" only starts at 50% mark and until then the H thinks of her as annoying, and the h is seriously considering other prospects. There is a secondary plot about H's paternity, but it is suddenly absolved in the end. The chemistry between the h and H is below average, and I did not connect to either.
Did not enjoy this one and struggled to end it. Probably the only good thing was the cover and title.

Johanna Lindsey brings us back to one of her wonderful families, the Reids. In this installment we have a heroine that is on her third season without finding a husband *gasp*! A few of the meddling members of her family think to hire Cupid. Although he is actually a horse breeder he has the revolutionary idea of matching people up by their shared interests instead of their titles and wealth.
Meanwhile our heroine has found a couple of fellas she’s interested in but must get over her fear of horses to get her favorite guy to propose.
This is where she needs Cupid because he can help her with her phobia. He can also give her another fella to consider...him.
Lovely story!

If I have to read Lindsey's contrived use of the slang "a'tall" one more time, I shall scream! It reminds me of some of the romances from the 1980's that writers tried to make sound Medieval by scattering words like struth or Elizabethan by making everyone exclaim, "Zounds!"
Not to mention I hate Amanda, the main character. Someone should slap her.

Review I liked:
They call him Cupid.

Devin Baldwin raises and trains horses—and as a hobby he also plays matchmaker, finding people of like interests and putting them together. He has this revolutionary idea that marriages work better if the couple has more than one thing they like to do together. Cuz that one thing, well, it’s nice, but there does come a time when you have to do other stuff and if you don’t do the other stuff together pretty soon you’ll be doing the one thing with people you do spend time with.

And Devin ought to know, since his father was doing the one thing with someone other than his wife when Devin was conceived.

The story starts with a wrenching prologue, in which Devin, as a little boy, asks his mother’s lover the wrong question, and ends up being sent away to live with an uncle he never knew he had. He grew up hating his mother, who died shortly after he was sent away, and even more so his father, who apparently wanted nothing to do with him. These days, while he’s all about living up to his nickname for other people, he’s also convinced that love is not in his future. What decent gal would have him, knowing his heritage—or lack thereof?

Amanda Locke has been through three Seasons without finding Mr. Right. She’s pretty enough, and has lots of beaus, but she’s looking for love, and so far she hasn’t found it.

Truth be told, she's feeling a little desperate. And when “Cupid” decides to dispense unsolicited (and snarky) advice on where she's going wrong, he hits a nerve. She’s even more furious to learn that her sister-in-law has hired him to help her.

Help her, indeed. The man’s a low-mannered thug. But, well, he might be useful after all. Amanda meets a handsome bachelor who happens to be an avid horseman. Amanda fell off a horse as a child and badly broke her leg—she’s been terrified of riding ever since. If Devin wants to help her he can do it by getting her back in the saddle.

Yeah, that's just about this guy's charm level.

Meanwhile, stuff keeps happening around Devin. First, a bunch of his horses get some bad hay and keel over. His prize stallion keels over, too. Then his best buddy gets knifed after getting out of Devin’s coach. Then some poacher darned near shoots him. It isn’t until yet another incident happens that Devin realizes someone is after him.

The whodunit isn’t too hard to suss out. The whydunit isn’t either. But it turns out to be a pretty good story anyway. The romance doesn't have as many fireworks as some of Lindsey's other stuff, but it works. 3.8 stars.

Another Lindsey treasure.

The lovely Amanda is on her third season and still has not found her true love and starting to dispair as most of her friends are married or engaged. She ponders her problem and believes she was to quick to pass on eligble men because she didn't fall in love at first sight, she vows to look again at all the men she passed up.

Not realizing her family also have enlisted the ton's matchmakers and the newly crowned Cupid. Figuring she had her problem solved she is annoyed by the blunt words of advice from the Cupid. He maybe handsome and manly but he is downright an arse. Meeting a handsome lord who she is attracted to puts her in another pickle as this new lord is horse mad......and alas she doesn't ride. Both her and Cupid come to the conclusion she needs to ride. So starts her riding leason given by none another than blunt Cupid himself, for he is an excellant horse breeder and horse farm owner.

Spending time together slowly draws them closer but both are still thinking about their goals: Amanda, the handsome horse mad lord and Devin, the matchmaking payment to expand his breeding stock. If any thoughts of romance between them come to mind they are quickly written off until the KISS! The kiss changes everything though both try to deny it. New feelings start to emerge to grapple with Devin's desire to discover the truth about his parents and the realization that someone is trying to kill him.....but who?

I just love how JL is able to weave these amazing tales of romance with such emotions on both Amanda's and Devin's part but also able to breathe life into this dead long ago era. JL brings back characters from previous books that we have grown to love and gives us more reasons to remember them. But then JL also adds that element of mystery.......with a tad of danger! Making for an exciting read. Just love JL's books!!!!!!

Thought that I’m now addicted to Highlanders *wink*

But this book doesn’t wow me. Sadly, as I’ve seen all those 5 stars in GR, but to me, I had a hard time getting into the book. It was plain boring and I skimmed..A LOT.. *yawning*

This about Amanda in the mission to find the right man to marry. She has spent three Seasons looking the possible husband but failed. Devin or known as Cupid coz his matchmaking skills, help Amanda to find her desire match. As their daily encounters, Amanda then finds herself falling in love with Cupid himself.

I loved the idea; where’s the hero is not an aristocrat. He’s actually the main reason why I kept pushing myself to finish the book. Oh, yup! The stars were given to hero okay. But I disliked the heroin. I’m a bit annoyed with her very hot tempered and over sensitive..haihh. Felt that I’m quite stressful while reading this.

The fourth book in Johanna Lindsey's Reid Family series. Beautiful Lady Amanda Locke, daughter of the Duke of Norford, is in her third season and determined to marry this time around. She meets a young man who she finds attractive but learns he is an avid horse lover. She never learned to ride due to an accident from her childhood so she agrees to be taught by Devin Baldwin, also known as Cupid. Devin is a horse breeder and seems to have a knack for matchmaking.

I really wanted to love this. Johanna Lindsey has written some wonderful books that are on my keeper and favorites shelves. But her more recent books seem to be missing something. The book wasn't terrible by any means but it didn't grab my attention like some of her past books have.

Won from Goodreads Firstreads.

This was my first title from this very popular author and I looked forward to getting to know her writing style.

WHAT WORKED:
- The premise. It was refreshing to have the hero be the society matchmaker, a great twist on the hoary old cliche of bachelor spending most of the historical romance story evading the efforts of (usually elderly, female) matchmakers.

- The hero is not an aristocrat. Again, it was a nice change for the hero to have grown up in circumstances where he didn't take titles, wealth, and privileges for granted.

WHAT DIDN'T:
- For most of the book, it seemed like all the heroine's thoughts and conversation was fixated on finding a husband. It was a relief to find out, at the half-way mark, that she had another interest (fishing). Even so, It was difficult to develop a sense of how she would spend her time and what her conversation would be about once the husband issue was settled. Likability wasn't helped by how often she "...rolled her eyes", but she did redeem herself by her reaction late in the book to learning a fact about the hero.

- Repetition. Both in terms of frequent reminders of aspects/motivations that had been mentioned before, and in vocabulary. One page contains the word "actually" four times within eleven lines of text, with a fifth
half a page further down. If a reader ate a cookie every time the phrase "a'tall" appears, they would have gained some serious poundage by the end of the book.

- Style. This is a highly subjective matter. Excerpts that most speak to some readers leave others cold or worse, rub them the wrong way. Consequently, it's usually a good idea for each individual reader to read a page or two themselves rather than reject a book because a reviewer didn't feel attracted to a writer's style. Having acknowledged that, I will admit that sentences like "She tsked." , and "A blush showed up.", stood out to me for the wrong reasons.

- Pet Peeve: incorrect use of words from foreign languages. Given how many years this author has been in the business, it was startling that "beaus" (rather than beaux) and "largess" (rather than largesse) were misspelled.

OVERALL:
Admiration is due to any author who has written over forty novels, and the number of copies sold and languages translated into prove that this author's work makes many readers very happy. Sadly, I personally was left wanting more from the writing and from the story.

Posted on Under the Covers

In her last two seasons, Amanda Locke has been passed by like a wallflower. Though she is beautiful and charming, there is something about her that causes all the eligible men to steer away from her. Now, her father, the Duke of Norford is prepared to take drastic measures to ensure that his daughter is well-cared for. As Amanda enters her third season, she is hopeful to find her true love.

Except she encounters Cupid instead. Cupid is a moniker given to Devin Baldwin, a horse breeder who has the uncharacteristic talent in matchmaking. After introducing several couples together that have resulted in a happy marriage, he has been deemed as Cupid. How cute! The name irritates Devin, but it makes the story so much more fun.

To ensure that Amanda catches the eye of noblemen who are interested in horse racing, Amanda must learn to overcome her fear of horses. Not an easy task for Devin, whose personality is not the most patient. I loved how Devin pushed her. Lindsey is known for her battle of the wills storyline and LET LOVE FIND YOU is a classic. Devin does not pull any punches. He tells Amanda how it is and I think this takes Amanda aback.

The banter between these two was priceless. Lindsey is just so great at dialogue and with two strong wills, it’s always a competition to see who will reign. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about it, though sometimes I did feel like some dialogue went on for too long.

In the end, I’m looking forward to reading some more of Johanna Lindsey’s books. She is such a great storyteller! LET LOVE FIND YOU is a sweet story involving two people who believe in love, but just didn’t realize that they’d find love in each other.

*4- Stars*

I usually try to avoid reading and listening to similar books in one genre at the same time, but I did that this week and I admit this suffered because of it. Once I got into it, more than 1/3 or so, it got much better though and I did enjoy it. In typical Johanna Lindsey fashion, this book was full of interesting characters and lots of fun family dynamics. It was sweet and lighthearted. I have a soft spot for Johanna Lindsey, she is the author who got me hooked on romance. (Though I can see in hind sight that was a part of all my favorite books as far back as childhood.) So while I have since discovered many wonderful authors and I think some of older work is better than some of the more recent, I still like her books!

Let Love Find You - 3 Stars

I can totally understand why a lot of the negative reviews for this book are from people who gave up on it in the first few chapters. The beginning of this book is awful and I can't believe an experienced novelist like Johanna Lindsey wrote it. Practically everything is done wrong. There's way too much focus on characters from previous books, a woman who is not the heroine is proclaimed over and over and OVER as the most beautiful woman of all time - even by our hero, the writing is incredibly annoying with weird contractions made out of mismatched words and a complete over use of exclamation points, and worst of all, our hero and heroine are both incredibly OBNOXIOUS. To put it bluntly, I almost gave up on this book too. In fact, the only reason I didn't was because it was the only audiobook I had to get through my daily commute and I couldn't get back to the library for a few days. But if you can grit your teeth and soldier through the first 1/3 of the story both Amanda and Devon become much more likable and Ophelia the beautiful paragon woman is more or less dropped from the story.

So all in all, by the end I was thoroughly rooting for our happy couple. And the mystery of who was trying to kill Devon added a nice little element of mystery to the story. Although, I have to question why this person bothered poisoning Devon's horse's hay and so forth when his only goal was to kill Devon. Messing with his horse farm wouldn't accomplish that goal so why bother?

After not being a fan of the first Johanna Lindsey book I tried, I'm so glad I gave her another shot. Let Love Find You was wonderful!

Amanda Locke is a talkative, charismatic girl in her third season who refuses to marry unless she finds love. So far, her admirers have done little to spark her interest. When she meets the handsome and distinguished lord Kindell, she decides that she'll do whatever it takes to snatch him as her husband; even if that means facing her biggest fear - learning to ride a horse. After a bad accident as a child, Amanda has come up with creative ways to get out of social gatherings involving riding. However, as that is Kindell's biggest, and perhaps only interest, Amanda must learn to ride if she wants to bring him up to scratch. The second biggest challenge is getting over her fear to get back on a horse. The first is putting up with riding lessons from the handsome devilish brute, Devin Baldwin.

Devin, an avid horse breeder, could care less what society thinks of him. After a tough childhood with a father he never knew and a mother who sent him away, Devin is determined not to let anyone close to him. It's ironic then that a natural inclination for matching making has dubbed him "Cupid" to the ton. Devin's seen too many bad pairings in high society to want to help couples make a good match. When he notices little miss sunshine, Amanda, having difficulty choosing a mate he steps in at the request of her family to help her win a husband. Little does he know that dealing with the exasperating stubborn girl will change everything he ever thought he believed about love.

With some quirky family members, attempted murder, and a fair dose of scandal thrown in, this book is a fun and delightful read!

I received a copy of this novel through the Goodreads First Reads Giveaway.

Since is #4 of Reid Family series, I felt that I had to read the other three books.
“Let Love Find You”, is by far the best in the series.

The sweet Amanda Locke, the daughter of Preston Locke, the 10th Duke of Norford, is the most that a noble young man can possibly want as a wife, still she’s on her third Season for “ shopping ” a husband, hoping that she’ll finally find the man of her dream, the true love. Since she spent the first two Seasons without luck, her family had decided to take radical measures and hire a matchmaker. Devin Baldwin an occasional matchmaker, the London’s newest Cupid, whose profession is breeding horses, has an interesting theory about marriage, which seems to work. For Amanda to be suitable to her future husband, an earl passionate about horses, she must overcome her fear for horses and ride again and Devin must take care of this sensitive task. From the beginning, they step on each others toes, Devin being too bold and sincere for the rebel Amanda, his advices are the last thing Amanda will consider.

The author contours both characters with a fine touch of her pen, drawing a perfect chemistry between her main characters. The plot is perfectly paced.

The book is easy to read and I would recommend this to anyone who is a fan of romance novels.
“Let Love Find You” is refreshing and a good company in this summer heat.

I have read some older books by Johanna Lindsey and wasn't impressed. That's why Let Love Find You got stuck at my TBR shelf for a long time and it was really surprising to me that it was actually quite good.

The main characters were okay. The heroines in books from 80's were so naive and silly that I hated them, Amanda is different. She is probably not the most interesting heroine in romance ever but she didn't annoy me. In the beginning, I wasn't sure if I liked Devin; he was a bit too alpha male for my taste but later on I got used to. And I really liked the secondary characters.

The plot was also not bad. However, I would prefer the relationship between Amanda and Devin to be more developed.

Plus, the cover is adorable. Considering it all, I would give it three and a half star and a second chance to some later books by Johanna Lindsey.

Lovely Amanda Locke, the daughter of a duke, has been out in London society for three years but has still not found a husband. When she sets her sights on a wealthy nobleman known to be passionate about horses, she enlists Devin Baldwin, a darkly handsome breeder of horses, to be her riding instructor. Devin is well known for using his expertise to bring about the matching of eligible young ladies to suitable gentlemen. But Amanda finds herself falling for the matchmaker instead, and her desire for a husband takes her in a wholly unexpected direction
I love the author’s books & usually read them straight through but I struggled a little with this one it just didn’t have the strength of characters I associate with the author. Yes I liked Devin & Amanda but didn't love them & I wasn't engrossed in their story. It was well written but not the compulsive read
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

I'm seriously wondering if Johanna Lindsey actually was the author of this book or if it is the work of a ghostwriter. The heroine was annoying and self centered and the hero was bland. They had no chemistry together. Some of the writing seemed really clunky to the point I had to re-read a paragraph to understand what was said. The writing was horribly repetitious. There were 2 sub-par sex scenes towards the end of the book that added virtually nothing to the book. If that wasn't bad enough the book had similarities to one of my favorite JL books Man of My Dreams which is quite upsetting. Man of My Dreams has a horse breeder named Devlin.Let Love Find You has a horse breeder named Devin. Really Johanna, really?

Amanda talked in exclamation points and thought in exclamation points. It was completely ridiculous. At one point I realized I was cringing when I saw yet another exclamation point and at another point I realized I was actually counting them. In 15 pages there were over 30 exclamation points. When you start counting punctuation marks while reading a book, you know there are problems.

In addition to the unbelievable amount of exclamation points Amanda's favorite word was a'tall which she used alllll the time. As in “It’s different here, not a’tall like at home in the country, where I’ve got so much to occupy me.” . I've not read a book set in this time period (which I imagine is regency or there abouts) that had as many slang words. A few of the characters used the word aint. And they weren't even commoners. Speaking of words that I'm not used to reading in historical romances I also found it odd that almost everyone had a nickname. Amanda was Mandy. Rebecca was Becky. Ophelia was either Pheli or Phelia. I know it wasn't unheard of but it felt jarring and untrue to the period.

The plot was horrible too. Through more than half the book it appeared that Amanda's search for a husband was the entire plot. After half the book suddenly a new plot device was introduced which was completely underwhelming and not fully realized.

I've read most everything Johanna Lindsey has written and found I loved some but disliked others. This book went beyond dislike. I truly hated it.

Here are a few quotes that I feel show why I dislike the characters and this book so much....in paranthesis I've made a few comments about the quotes....

Amanda sighed. "I have so many, too many really, choices of men to pick from. It's just becoming a bit difficult to sort them all out."
(said the self centered egotistical twit)

Amanda hurried away, not sure what about that old dame annoyed her. But really, Amanda already knew Farrell, considered him somewhat a friend, but for a matchmaker to recommend to her a second son with no prospects? The woman had to be going batty in her advanced years.
(thought the self centered egotistical twit who planned to marry for love but apparently only if that love was not with a second son)

Devin knew that daring Amanda to tackle riding lessons had been a long shot. A man would accept the challenge, a woman would find numerous excuses to decline it.
(thought the man who appears to be more of a male chauvinist pig than a hero)

"As for Robert," Amanda added with a grin,"if I'm not at least a little cold to him because of his near scandal, he won't be repentant enough to make sure it never happens again."
"Sound reasoning, I suppose," Preston allowed.
"Perfect reasoning," Julie agreed...
(because a disproving frown from a proper young lady can change the behavior of a womanizing man....)
