Lone Star Cowboys #1

Blame it on Texas

Rate this book
Logan Tanner shook the red dust of West Texas off his boots at the age of eighteen and hasn't looked back. When his father has a stroke, Logan is temporarily forced to return home and take over the family ranch. He still feels responsible for his mother's death when he was twelve, and has never gotten over the guilt. Now he's faced with having to protect his twelve year old daughter Katie and his sister and her friend Megan Flynn. It's nearly more than one man can handle. He can't wait to get back to Dallas.

Megan Flynn immediately falls in love with Morris Springs, Texas, population 976, when she delivers Logan's runaway daughter to his doorstep. Raised as a city girl, Megan has a dream of a few acres, a few champion Blue Heelers, and a small-town veterinary practice. The only thing standing between her and her dream is one stubborn, reluctant cowboy with an overprotective streak as wide as the West Texas prairie. But her stubborn streak is a match for his any day. And she's determined to prove it.

Blame it on Texas is a story of the power of love to overcome any adversity, the strength of family and friendship, and the joy that comes with being part of something bigger than yourself.

What a nice surprise this Kindle freebie turned out to be. It was about second chances, coming home, seeing life through someone else’s eyes, and realizing that maybe what you left behind wasn’t all that bad.

Logan and Megan are looking for different things out of life, but when they are brought together by chance, and she helps him and his sister with the huge challenge of making their father comfortable as he’s recovering from a stroke. Logan is in awe of this woman that treats his father with respect and dignity, something that he found difficult to do himself. Logan’s sister and daughter love Megan and it’s not long before Logan can’t help falling for her too!

This nicely written sweet romance has a little suspense, a tragic event that pulls a town together, wonderful characters and makes you think about what’s really important in life.

I really hope that this series continues, because I have to know what happens with Jake and Carol. Loved them both and they need to find happiness too, so write them a book Tori Scott!!

Blame it on Texas by Tori Scott was a great read, one that I enjoyed immensely. I was subjected to a lot of emotion as I read this novel, one I am finding out that Tori Scott is quite adept at dishing out to her readers. Toe-curling sexiness together with a lot of heartwarming characters with a hint of a secondary romance to follow, Blame it on Texas is a novel I would recommend for fans who love romances that makes you feel like you are part of the journey of the hero and heroine’s way towards happily ever after.

The fact that Logan Tanner hates going back to his hometown in West Texas is an understatement. The misplaced guilt Tanner feels about his mother’s sudden death when he was just around 12 years old still haunts him which keeps him away from a land that has no mercy in Logan’s eyes. A successful game designer and the father of a beautiful daughter whom he doesn’t get to see enough of, Logan has a lot on his mind when he is summoned by his sister Carol to take care of their father after he has a debilitating stroke.

When Logan’s daughter Katie turns up on the ranch’s doorstep with Carol’s friend Megan Flynn in tow, the feelings that courses through the rigidly controlled Logan is one that shocks him to his core. Divorce from a woman whose theatrics has soured him from commitment and relationships seems to have no place in his life when the sweet, courageous and sexy Megan steps into their lives. A connection that Logan doesn’t want or need nevertheless forms between the two and Logan doesn’t know whether to thank the Lord for sending her his way or to curse the fates because he has too many stuff to deal with at the moment.

Tragedy strikes, bringing out the best in each and everyone that is part of Logan’s hometown and in the midst of it all, Logan finds that he is not strong enough to turn away from the warmth and affection that Megan seems to shine upon his life, a woman who seems to understand the very things that he wants and needs.

Megan has her own dreams which she yearns to fulfill with everything inside of her. A veterinary practice in a small town where she would feel a sense of belonging is all that she wants from life until Logan Tanner and his daughter Katie invades her heart throwing her into the chaotic realms of love.

The reason I enjoyed Blame it on Texas so much was that Tori Scott managed to mix up all the right ingredients to give me an engrossing tale that in the end has its own message to deliver. Logan who has lost his way because of his misplaced guilt goes through a lot of hurdles to reach a place where he is ready for a happily ever after, and I loved the angst his tortured nature lent to the story.

I loved Megan. For me, she was the best thing about the story. She has all those qualities that I love about a heroine and for me she was just the right person to bring Logan out of the darkness that seems to consume him until there is not even a flicker of light left in his life. I loved the family dynamics and the small town aspect of the story that lent the story a charm of its own.

Oh, well, hmmm....how do I describe this book??? AMAZING! Well that would be one way to put it! Logan is forced to move home and take care of his father with his sister's help. While he is doing this he sublets his apartment to Megan, a woman he has never met, on his sister's recommendation. Unknown to him, his daughter runs away from her mother, only to show up at his apartment wanting her daddy whom she believes doesn't love her anymore. Logan has spent the last couple months missing his daughter, trying to contact her by any means possible, only to be cut off at every step of the way by his ex-wife. When Megan takes Katie, Logan's daughter, to the farm at which he is living Carol, Logan's sister, invites her to stay...much to the annoyance of Logan. Carol had scheduled a trip to New York prior to her father becoming ill and decided that she would not go, when Megan heard her story she volunteered to stay with Charlie, Logan and Carol's dad, and Katie so Logan could work on the farm and keep his business running. Two weeks together isn't enough for either of them, things stretch out for weeks. Will Katie and Logan Find Love? Or just disaster after disaster devastate these two hearts? Read the book and find out...you'll be happy you did!

BRIEF SUMMARY
Logan has left home since he was eighteen and hasn’t return since. Now that his father has suffered a stroke, he has returned home to help care for him. While back home, he is worried about his daughter Katie. Megan stumbles upon Katie, who has run away from home. When she returns Katie to her father, she falls in love with Logan and his family.

THOUGHTS

This was a mellow and sad at times story. I think the author did a great job building a story around this Texas family. Though the story is about Megan and Logan's growing relationship throughout the story, it is also about Katie and the family. Katie is the daughter of Logan. Katie definitely was a child that was very determined, and had her issues dealing with her parents. Logan has issues, but I think everything for him came full circle towards the end, which includes Megan.

Though I mentioned sad moments, this shouldn't be discouraging, as everything brought the story together that gave me different stages of emotions that I went through.

Storyline: GOOD
Enjoyment: GOOD

I love this series and Megan I loved her, "Megan hugged her back, then hissed in her ear. "Why didn't you tell me your brother is gorgeous? My clothes are wrinkled, I'm hot and sweaty, and my makeup disappeared around Abilene. I'm so embarrassed." I mean Logan that boy is something handsome, "she was so mesmerized by the image of the broad, tanned chest, lightly dusted with black curly hair, she didn't realize she was staring until a spray of water slapped her in the face." I mean Megan ain't the only one sneaking peaks of the other, Logan does the same thing, "he watched as Megan gathered up scraps of barbed wire and discarded ties. He had to admit she was a hard worked. And she looked kind of cute with red dust on the butt of her jeans. And a fine, nicely rounded butt at that." He's just so seductive, "Logan gave her a wicked grin. "Whatever you want to wear, or not wear, is fine with me." He whistled for Blue, who bounded into the water. With a wink at Megan, he unbuckled his belt, shed his boots and socks, then started to unzip his jeans." I can't wait to get into the other books in this series!

3.5 Stars. This was a very good story. I had my doubts at first with the heroine being young, which is always a sticking point with me. It didn't help when there were a couple of instances of being in the daughters POV either. But eventually the characters started to grow on me. By the middle of the story, I felt like I was a part of their family and even the community.

That said, I did have issues with the heroine towards the end when she was willing to give up all of her hopes and dreams and go crawling back to the hero, begging him to take her back. One of those "something's better than nothing" situations that I always found to be pathetic and desperate.

I also, had a problem with the pacing and redundancy at the end. Not to the point of skimming, but very tempted to do just that. It seemed like all the hero could dwell on was his guilt for the past… for chapter after chapter after chapter. I wanted to scream "Just get over it already!" And that is the sole reason for the lower rating from me. Overall, I'm glad I read this book. It had a great cast of characters and okay pacing. I probably wouldn't read it again, but I'd recommend it to those looking for a —somewhat— light-hearted read.

Oh my goodness! I couldn’t put this one down for a second. Scott mixes action and suspense alongside heartache and love to create a wonderfully complex experience for her audience. She captures the essence of a working ranch perfectly and wraps it up in a will-they-won’t they tale like you’ve never seen before. Scott’s descriptions are so vivid that she paints the ranch before you, allowing you to walk alongside the characters. Each and every moment is extremely real and poignant.

The conflicts between family duty and what an individual wants stand out starkly in this tale. It was a very unique and touching contrast. It is not just part of the story, but also part of who these characters are intrinsically. The main characters were such vivid and strong individuals, even if they were slightly misguided at times. It was both heartbreaking and heart-warming seeing them come to terms with who they were versus who they want to be. Their individual histories and combined present are so completely developed without sacrificing the storyline that you really get to know them. I also thoroughly enjoyed the minor characters in the novel. You really get a feel for this entire community. I really can’t wait to get to know them better throughout the series.

Scott had me in tears and squealing for joy throughout. This was the perfect mix of everything. It may have been my introduction to Scott’s work, but it definitely won’t be my last foray into the wonderful world that she has created.

Delightful romance with enough of an edge to make it memorable. While all is not wine and roses, neither is it whine and rages. It is a well developed story with a definite story line, some real life, and great characters. I was delighted to discover that his book has a sequel although I do not know if it will go any further.

Logan and Carol move home to help out on the family ranch when their father has a stroke. A complication brings Megan, a friend of Carol's to the ranch much to Logan's irritation. At first I thought Logan's over protectiveness was a weakness in the story, until I discovered the reason behind it. Logan and Megan are drawn to each other and Megan can imagine nothing more perfect than living on the ranch and being a country veterinarian; she has had enough of impersonal city life. Logan on the other hand got away from the ranch as soon as he could when he was a kid, and he can't wait to get away again and the last thing he wants to try to raise a family in the country.

Warm, rich relationships make this romance a rereader.

I am now a Tori Scott fan.

I really enjoyed this story and its characters, but maybe not as much as Lone Star Justice, which I read just before it, since I missed the edginess of a murder mystery mixed in with the romance. Logan should have gotten on my nerves, but instead he cracked me up. He was such an anxious little worry-wort--he reminded me of some of the little old lady control freaks in my church. I was hoping the author would write the poor dear a prescription for some ativan. Anyway, I found him more human than the usual romantic hero and thus a refreshing change from the generic stoic alpha male of the romance genre, so he added a lot of heart and soul to the book. I also liked that the author could create a smart, strong heroine without any need for obnoxious tantrums, histrionics, and too stupid to live antics. Wow, a romance heroine with intact thinking process and mature self-control--imagine that! I found this to be a warm, real, and very enjoyable little romance, plus, the story had a dog--very important.

Similar to Kathleen Brooks and the Bluegrass series, this story is light, fun, and an easy read. Unlike Kathleen Brooks, Tori Scott has an editor and it was typo and spelling error free! What a welcome change! I really enjoyed the story and the character struggle, and while some of it was far fetched, easier to believe than the story lines of the Bluegrass series. Less outlandish than the Bluegrass stories can also mean slightly less fun, but I like that I could absolutely relate to this.

I live in a small town (in the north, but similar feel). We've had a tornado rip through town. We know everyone around here, everyone says hi, and our community is pretty closely knit. Now I just wish someone like Logan lived here (other than my horse haha as that is my one horse's name!).

A fun, easy read that is believable, enjoyable, and tugs at the heart.

A fun, sweet and endearing read that really gives you the feelings of hometown, true love, family and friendship.

Logan is in the only place he does not want to be. His hometown. Now surrounded by women and his sick father he's even more regretful of his decision to go back there. Even briefly. All he wants to do is get out of there, work, and take care of his daughter. But fate has other plans for him.

Megan wants all that Logan has. The hometown, the familiarity, friends, fresh country air and just a great place to call home. She's never experienced any of it before and is determined to make her dreams come true.

Together Logan and Megan are two halves of a whole. If only they realize it and let fate be their guide they will both live the happiest lives possible.

Another reviewer wrote that "this is everyday people, in their everyday lives, facing everyday problems" and that is such a great way to put it. It is such a refreshing change to see that all these people aren't rich and successful. They are down-home working class individuals who are as real to you as the people next door, maybe more so. This book had everything you would want in a story. This author is great at that and her books are those that no matter how much you try, you cannot put it down. I personally recommend this book and the author to anyone who is looking for a spark of laughter, a spark of sadness and a heavy dose of real life by characters that you will fall in love with.

I loved this book it was wholesome yet steamy, the characters were engaging and a total page turner straight to the end! I felt emotionally invested in this story from the beginnning and was sent on an emotional roller coaster throughout. This author managed to write about serious life and relationship issues just as seamlessly as a few steamy intimate moments between characters. I have read everything I can get my hands on by this author and have never been disappointed so I would gladly recommend this book to anyone that enjoys a good solid read! Get it, read it, enjoy as much as I did!

All said I enjoyed this very much. In the beginning, I had my doubts I would because every time a new course is introduced we're left guessing who they are and what their relationship is. I thought Carol was the love interest for a few pages. and figuring out how old Katie was took a couple chapters.

Quick rundown for others who don't want to be confused:
Logan - hero, Carol - his sister, Megan - Carol's friend, Logan's love interest, Katie - Logan's 12yo daughter, Charlie - Logan & Carol's dad.

Definitely worth a read, especially if you know who the players are!

Winter reading program prompt #2: Western

What I expected out of this book: To fill a prompt, mild entertainment, quick easy read. Mission accomplished.

I have zero clue how this book ended up in my Kindle library, but there it is, and it’s surely the only thing I own that qualifies as “Western”. So… I read it. Blame it on Texas is basically a country western Hallmark movie. Big city businessman obligated to come home to his father’s ranch due to family circumstances. Hates small town life. Always wanted out. Enter: his sister’s friend, a newly-graduated veterinarian, whose dream is to leave the city where she grew up, settle down in the country, and open a small-town veterinary practice.

You can 100% guess where this book is going, and you’re 100% right. I had a conversation not too long ago that made me realize that some people love the comfort of predictability and happily ever after. I guess I can see that. But I’m not one of those people, so take my review with a grain of salt 😂 To me it was super improbable on several plot points, but I think you’re supposed to just overlook that kind of stuff in books like this? I don’t know. I also prefer some unpredictability, which was nowhere to be found. Overall though I was brainlessly entertained and I didn’t hate it, and while it’s far from brilliant, I’ve read worse writing. Ending was definitely cheesy. 3 stars. PS, if you are into books like this, there’s a whole lot more in the series.

Censorship rating: Medium. “Adult content” is pretty brief, medium on the explicit scale. 2.5/5 flames. Very mild swearing with a lot more “dangs” and “dagnabbits”.

I didn't think I was going to like this book. I got so annoyed with the male MC, Logan, at the beginning of the book. He was acting like a weak-a$$ed beta male. Quivering, trembling, getting sick to his stomach at the thought of going back to his hometown.

For some reason, I decided to stick it out and pushed passed those first couple of chapters.

I'm glad I did.

Because I eventually warmed up to Logan and he stopped being such a putz.

I liked Megan. I didn't love her but I liked her. I felt as if the author flipped them. Megan became very annoying towards the end but at least she stood up for herself and what she wanted.

Their romance was sweet and the book was heart warming.

It was an insta-lust but the love took time. The author had long time jumps between events which made them falling in love more probable.

I really liked the small town this story is set in. I found myself almost crying in spots when the author showed the community spirit of this town. It's a place I'd love to live in and I couldn't believe that Logan and his sister would feel otherwise.

I'm looking forward to reading the stories of Megan's former roommates. I'm not sure about Carol's story. She annoyed me throughout the book and I don't know if I want to read a book devoted to her.

Otherwise, this is a solid start to this series and I enjoyed it.

'Look out'

I am in love with the Lone Star Cowboys series! I can't wait to read the rest of these books.

Usually, I like to include excerpt from this story:

"Oh, hell."
"You'd better stick close by, Lord, or we're going to hell in a hand basket."

I love reading about how people come together when there is a need, whether there is a disaster or someone in need. This is what you will like as well.

...there it was again. One of their own. All of these years Logan felt like an outsider, but it seemed he'd been the only one who thought so. Maybe if he'd tried harder. Or maybe if he hadn't tried so hard, he could have fit in after all. (Page 65)

This is an amazing story, the first one I have read by this author, and I plan on reading the rest of this series.

Enjoy and happy reading everyone.

Cover/Title: It was the series name that caught me. I am a fan of hunky cowboys (what girl isn't?)

Characters: Logan is stubborn to say the least. However, his ex-wife made me want to reach thru the book and slap her. LOL. Megan was too sweet. I loved the townspeople of Morris Springs, though. That is the way a town should be.

Plot: Typical romance. Two stubborn people too busy stumbling over themselves, other people and their problems to admit how they feel about each other.

Overall: If you are looking for something new or different, this ain't it. This is your typical romance but it is a good book to cuddle up with on a cold day. There are days that you need a sweet, predictable romance. This is perfect for those days.

Interested Storyline & Characters

My rating would be more like 3.5 stars, so I rounded up. For those who might want a heads-up, this story has some mild profanity and bedroom scenes, though neither are prolific.
What I loved about the story was how the hero grew. I felt like the hero and heroine did take some time to get to know one another. I liked the portrayal of the small western town life, too.
There were a few things I didn't like so much. Instant attraction with high emphasis on physical traits always seems too shaky a foundation to build a relationship on and make it believable. There were a couple glaring typos.
If you like contemporary romance with some steam and cowboys, you might enjoy this story.

This book just didn't work for me. I like an Alpha, protective hero but the hero in this book was just a jerk. His views on females was ridiculous and I have no idea what the heroine really saw in him. His guilt got old after awhile and when he went back home and right back to his old ways without regard to his sister and daughter I lost all respect for him. I also hated that the heroine was willing to give up all her hopes and dreams and everything she had worked for to accept the hero in whatever way she could have him. I'm sorry but I can't handle that and therefore I lost respect for the heroine as well. The ending was rushed and unbelievable.

I sort of liked the characters with in this novel, but the plot i felt was some what dragging.. I think it would of been better if she actually moved to the town taking over the vets practice then runs into his daughter who is run away... I could not see what Megan saw in him though, he was grumpy, and a complete ass during the whole of the novel which made me want to punch him myself (if could of i would of).. Men like that need to grow up, they have response abilities to think about, like being a dad.
