I've been writing for a few years now, having studied screenwriting at a well known film school. I've always loved creating romantic stories and wanting to try my hand at penning a novel, I decided to turn one of my screenplays into a book. HER PERFECT REVENGE was born.
But because I come from a screenwriting background, I tend to write my books more like movies. As you read my novels, you'll find yourself 'watching' that film playing inside your head while at the same time, feeling all of the emotions that my crazy characters are going through. My first and most important goal as a writer is always that I want you to have FUN with my stories. I hope that I can accomplish that for you!
I also like to write in different genres besides romantic comedy. I've written a romantic suspense novel and a murder mystery amateur detective one. If you've enjoyed reading my writing style, I hope you'll give the other genres a chance. Who knows? You might have lots of fun reading those too.
HER PERFECT REVENGE: A LAUGH-OUT-LOUD ROMANTIC COMEDY has also been released as a Japanese manga novel by Ohzora Publishing. Illustrations were done by artist Hiromi Kobayashi.
WHY ROMEO HATES JULIET: A LAUGH-OUT-LOUD ROMANTIC COMEDY is my second book.
SIN & SAVAGE: A ROMANTIC SUSPENSE THRILLER is my third.
My most recent novel is THE MYSTERY OF THE DOLL'S EYES: A MRS. PIDGEON MURDER MYSTERY. It's the first standalone book in the new Mrs. Pidgeon murder mysteries that will soon become a series.
I've also released THE SCREENPLAY version of HER PERFECT REVENGE as a separate standalone ebook.
TROUBLEMAKERS: 3 BOOK BOX SET is a collection of three of my romance novels all in one set.
I give up. This book had a moment or two. It could be something. And it goes way too long with just recent stuff that drags on and on. I have nothing against comedy of situation..as a matter of fact, I enjoy it. In this one there is just too much of it. Sorry not sorry.
I have to add I'm not a fan of "original" Romeo and Juliet and these two well are equally annoying.
Three chapters into this book, I honestly started to question whether this author had ever had a conversation with another human. By the end, I was certain she had not. The dialog is just that awful. Not only that, but I have never been so disappointed in a story that I went into with no expectations. I could so easily see how this could've been a very entertaininng screwball romantic comedy type novel, but clearly that was not to be. It's just astonishing to me the way the author systematically ruined her own novel with asinine, overblown, unrealistic scenarios, and such horrid dialog. Perhaps this author watches nothing but reality tv? I cannot think of any other reason she would believe that people might behave the way her characters do.
Another thing I found to be off-putting and really bizarre was the way the first half of the novel was completely different in tone from the last. First half, pseudo screwball romantic comedy; second half, the worst, most overdramatically florid soap opera you've ever had the misfortune of viewing.
In conclusion, I have four suggestions for this author:
1. Have a conversation with an actual human. Take notes. 2. Cut down on the reality tv & soap operas. They're distorting your sense of actual reality. 3. Remove all forms of the words "shard" and "scream" from your vocabulary. Do it now. 4. Take a writing class and learn how to introduce new characters. Tip: a two paragraph info-dump beginning with character name, age, and physical description might work for your outline, but it does not work in your book.
I'm going to say the good stuff first. This book had the potential to be a really good romantic comedy. The idea was good. The writer has a great imagination. That's it for the good stuff.
I rolled my eyes so many times in this book, they almost rolled out of my head. Juliet was a moron. She was just plain dumb. Romeo was an idiot frat boy. With the exception of Sara and Tommy, the secondary characters were just as dumb. I almost stopped reading at the super glue scene, it was so idiotic.I would have if Romeo hadn't also apparently thought it was idiotic. The dialogue was just plain cheesy in places. If the heroine of a love story does anything "coyly" and "giggles" (the author's words) incessantly, it pretty much turns me off, and there was a lot of that in this book. When she wasn't "shrieking", anyway.
I also thought the book was somewhat overwritten. As a reader, we don't always want the writer to spell everything out for us, especially the minor stuff, like the fact that the hero is wearing a bandage to cover his gunshot wound to keep infection out. We KNOW why he's wearing a bandage. Just say he has nothing on but a bandage. It's not necessary to say all that, it just makes a book tedious. Pretty much, if four words would do, the author used twelve.
I won't say it's not worth the read, but I wouldn't put it at the top of my list.
I lost count how many times I closed my eyes in dejection when I read about them, especially Juliet. She's completely hopeless to live. I'm not sure how she could live until 27 yo with her brain if not because she lived in her own fiction world. Double meaning intended. But this was what finally brought me to edge.
“Oh my God,” she mouthed before turning her frightened eyes back up to her sister. “Sara, I’ve made such a huge mistake; I should never have left him. I should have told him about Carrie Ann and the baby.”
I was literally pinching my nose, imagining a nice slap to Juliet's face. Gosh, she's the most frustrating heroine ever! Why do I feel like reading Harlequin Present?
“That was my baby, Juliet; so that was my decision to make, not yours. When Carrie Ann came to you, you should have told me right away.."
You and me, both, sweet Romeo. Okay, maybe Romeo wasn't that bad. At least one of them had a functioning brain although they both were still quite annoying. And to be fair, the ending is kinda sweet...I guess. But what earn this book 2 stars still is because I love that they both stayed celibate even when they're separated for a year.
It's ridiculously bad I'm questioning myself why would I ever think that it might be good to give this author a second chance. It's clear this author is not for me.

This book starts out believably. Juliet is a writer afflicted with something common to all authors at some stage - writer's block. After a highly successful first novel, Juliet is paid a one hundred thousand dollar advance to come up with the second. If she can't, then she has to pay back the advance or go bankrupt. However, completing the book appears to be impossible until her married younger sister, Sara, persuades her to take a break at a quiet holiday cottage, owned by Sara's husband's family.
The girls arrive and discover that there is a cottage right next door, but as this is empty, they are not concerned. Juliet actually starts writing again - but then, Romeo Boyd - bored, partying film star whose career is on the skids - arrives with a girlfriend and two other couples in tow. The house party starts, with heavy metal music set to top decibel. Understandably, Juliet and Sara are incensed - I would be too - and they set out to protest to their neighbours.
Things go downhill from there - plot and writing-wise. I would question the age of the author, because the ongoing “teen” antics of Juliet become downright dangerous. They could be funny, but they are not well written enough for that. Time and again, this character plays revenge games on Romeo, even though each "game" ends up disastrously. To actually want - and try - to superglue his hand to his balls...does the author have any idea what the consequences of that would be? Her ultimate act just escapes being fatal which leads to Romeo retaliating.
The parental background of the two sisters is presented as being one of Juliet's issues with a relationship, but this was not convincing. The character is supposed to be 27 and should have enough maturity to work out what is real and what not. Her constant lying would be enough to put off any man. Her desperation to finish her contracted book disappears after the main event (no spoilers) and she spends her time agonising over not having the advance to pay back to the publisher, but doesn’t actually sit down and finish the book! (She does write one later though which is successful.)
Juliet's decision-making goes from bad to worse (she knows what's best for everyone of course, especially for Romeo) until I was ready to chuck the book at the 3/4 mark.
The main character's relationship was a train wreck in the making and I persevered only because I wondered how the author would get out of it. The writing in this novel was not tight enough or exciting enough to pull off the plot, so for me this book was a disappointment.
I can't say I hated it, but at the same time it did not fulfill the initial promise of the first two or three chapters which was a great pity as Anna Mara's work is usually well up to scratch.
Its been a loonng time since I've read a really long book but I made it towards the end. Everything was all happy going and the the author totally ruined it for me by I wanted to scream! I had invested sooo much time in this and I totally feel jilted.
There where soo many things I hated but I liked the story. I loved the love-hate relationship, the name calling and all the stupid games they played, Yes Juliet got on my nerves, she frustrated the hell out of me with her idiotic behaviour.
And the amount of chapters in this was insane!, a couple pages a piece. 104 chapters! it was too lengthy for me with too much inner dialogue, pages and pages of nonsense. easily skim-able
This was a 3star from the start but that plot line during the end makes it barley a 1star. I had to force myself to finish the rest and of course this had to have a happy ending, and that happy ending sucked!
The author had a really great premise with the neighbor war between a struggling writer & a big Hollywood hunk.
There were a lot of emotional plot points, from near drownings & phobias -to- the good and bad consequences of revenge and schemes -to- second chance romance and forgiveness. Fluff for the sake of fluff isn't really the problem here. More in a minute~
This story had the potential to be funny, witty, entertaining, and emotionally reflective. Sadly, it was weighted down with so many irritants that the story was lost and became annoying and tedious to get through.
The bad...
The writer overwrote the ENTIRE story - every element, every plot point, every conversation, every inner rambling! And, hey, I'm a very verbose person, okay! Basically, if say a thought, convo, or happening required a seven word sentence to convey, then the author made three paragraphs out of what should've been a single sentence. Imagine an upbeat pop song (the story) being danced to with a stiff, slow waltz (the writing.) It made for tedious, frustrating reading.
Some of the schemes were just too over the top and serious to be funny. Super glue his hand to the chair is one thing. Super glue his hand to his penis is quite another thing. I appreciate over the top humor. "The Consequence of Loving Colton" is one of my favorite books! However, this book carelessly shooting people and the cruelty of wanting to glue private places... Ehh, that's just not my idea of funny.
Lies and hurting each other came too easily for this couple. The author made the guilt and suffering that followed clear, but the ease of getting mad, seeking revenge, jumping to think the worst of each, & of her running away just made it difficult to root for a HEA when the entire book is spent with them being a destructive force of hurt toward each other.
Chapter 79 was weird. The whole butterfly kisses and heart cave thing was odd, extremely cheesy, and just didn't even make sense. Getting to the sex scene in this book was like traipsing around in Sahara sand dunes for hours, and then it was seriously disappointing and dramatically cheesy.
The last 10-15% of the book felt discombobulated. I didn't buy Carrie Ann's place in the HEA. Why? SPOILER SENTENCE******Child support from a movie star$$$ buys lots of nannies. Need I say more?!?
Ironically enough, the end felt rushed in a forced way... Like all the pieces that were needed for them to be together were just thrown together for everything to have the HEA.
Bottom line...
This is one of those books that readers will either find wildly romantic and funny or a huge letdown. I was letdown.
This was my first Anna Mara read and I loved it, I’ve never laughed out loud so much as to the amount of stupidity and immaturity that came from Romeo and Juliet. This was a cute, fun and light hearted read. Juliet is on vacation with her sister Sara, trying to write up her next novel to save herself financially before she ends up declaring bankruptcy. The arrival of her unexpected next door neighbours shatters her peace, as loud music takes over and sexual nature is on full display to witness, day in day out derailing any possibility for Juliet to write and deliver her novel on time. Suffering enough disruption and fear taking over Juliet storms across and confronts her neighbour only to be blown away by Romeo, who mistakenly takes her for the personal stripper hired for him by his friends, the scenes that followed were too funny! A love hate relationship entails and all war breaks out as these two try to get one over the other, Juliet fighting for peace and quiet, whilst Romeo wanting the opposite and not backing down. There was so many funny scenes that my face ached from smiling and laughing. In the event of Romeo and Juliet trying to trap each other to get the upper hand, real feelings start to develop between them and we see another side to Romeo, but at every turn they are prevented from being together due to their own antics and Romeo’s fake ass girlfriend Carrie Ann getting in the way, god I hated the manipulative woman and I can’t believe what she shared with Romeo I hated it! I would like to have seen a confrontation between her and Juliet as she was the catalyst that kept them apart and Romeo broke Juliet’s heart, taking his revenge further with faking amnesia ruining any chance he had with Juliet despite wanting to own up due to his feelings for her taking over. Leaving Juliet to make the ultimate sacrifice for her Romeo. A beautiful fun, comical and romantic read with a hea, I would like to have seen more of an epilogue as it wasn’t enough, I really wanted to see how their future unfolded, as there wasn’t enough happy moments shared together, a novella please?!

The wright expression in english, i think, is Tit for Tat! Give as good as you get... Well you most certainly get a lot of that is this book. This book starts with a sad, sad reality of our current society...Juliet and Sara's parents divorce. Bo matter what happens in a relationship, children shouldn't be a casualty of divorce. What kind of parent, human being does that... You have two characters who's childwood somehow defined their core and actions as grow ups. This is a very long novel, but it brings really long laughts! I can't decide what part i love more...the back injurie along with the black eye, the glue and a black eye matching the other one and i've got say that faking amnesia and saying that he only remembers his wife Juliet is brilliant. This is my second book by Anna Mara and i've notested that her female characters have a loooot of resistance towards sex! LOL Towards the end i though...he's ex is not really pregnant and then...its awfull and then...why couldn't have endend with them finding their way in the marriage or with Juliet being pregnant herself...?! I was sad. I've came to the conclusion that Anna Mara writes very long novels, but with sudden and shorts ends. But i love her stories, i think they will make great romantic comedie movies. And i'm looking forward reading more of her work.
This book really put a smile on my face. It had me laughing throughout the whole book. I was just happy after I read it. Though in the beginning only a few things were funny, by the middle it had me cracking up. I did wish some things were different though. Through the whole book, I kept wanting to scream, "Just talk to each other already! And tell each other how you feel!" I felt like just too many things had gotten in between them. It was like one thing after another that stopped them from being together. It kind of got annoying. I was upset with Juliet a lot in this book. I thought she was just so stupid at times. I found it hilarious that all her antics against Romeo backfired on her and made for some entertaining stories. I did feel like the ending was rushed a bit because I went from crying around the beginning ninety percent of the book to smiling at other end of ninety percent of the book. I just didn't know what hit me. I wish that the epilogue had more to it because I would have loved to know more about Romeo and Juliet's future. However, the small faults did not take away from the book at all. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I'm glad I had gotten this as an Amazon freebie.
I wanted to love this book --- especially since it enjoys relatively good sales on amazon.com. But to be honest, I found few redeeming qualities to it. The story was just okay and it was rather hard to get through --- feeling more like a trudge through a swamp than a fun romance novel. The premise was great and the characters showed some promise, but I had real issues following the story. The scene jumps quickly from place to place. And unfortunately, the dialogue is rather juvenile.
okay i loved this book the amount of the confusion between them is too damn high i was reading it the same time as my friend and we would just point at something and laugh tell we have tears and we just couldn't say a specific part that we liked because we liked it all
Romeo Boyd is a Hollywood star whose fame is fading, and he heads to his vacation home to drown his worries in alcohol. His love for very loud rock music immediately causes problems for his neighbour, Juliet Soma, a novelist seeking her muse to ward off a serious case of writer’s block.
When Juliet meets Romeo, he mistakes her for a stripper and things go downhill from there. An intense rivalry ensues, and when Juliet gets Romeo arrested all bets are off. When she then lands him in the hospital, in his most devious move, Romeo fakes amnesia and “mistakes” Juliet for his wife. A guilt-ridden Juliet is convinced by Romeo’s “doctor” (actor friend) to go along with whatever Romeo says, and Juliet soon becomes Romeo’s slave. Living together might mean killing each other, but instead the unthinkable happens: they start falling for each other!
Will Juliet discover Romeo’s deception? Will she forgive him, or up the ante? Could there ever be a happily ever after for two stubborn fools? Can they put the past behind them? Can they trust each other’s motives when they’ve done nothing but cause each other grief?
Why Romeo hates Juliet by Anna Mara is a very refreshing read (that has absolutely nothing to do with William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet; this is by no means a modernisation of the story, the characters’ names being the only commonality). This book made me cringe and laugh out loud several times. The characters are colourful and engaging, pulling you into their war from the get go. A happy ending is never a certainty, and Mara keeps you guessing until the very end.
What I especially like about this book is its deviation from a common pattern in romantic fiction: Where the guy is usually the one who messes up badly and must fight to convince the girl to give him another chance, Why Romeo hates Juliet flips it 180. The girl is the one who messes up, and she’s the one who must atone for her mistake – a nice departure from the expected.
I give this book a rating of 3/5 instead of 4/5 because I would have preferred a little more romance. The majority of the story is Romeo and Juliet going out of their way to aggravate each other, but their chemistry is so great they keep you hooked. I did get really frustrated with both of them, but they kept me invested in their story until the end. While I concur that the situations these two get themselves into are unlikely to happen in the real world, it is the touches of realism instead of over-the-top, soppy, unrealistic scenes that made this book stand out. Why Romeo hates Juliet has a more realistic road to HEA than most, and disappoints my helplessly romantic heart before it delivers a satisfying ending. Juliet not only had to earn Romeo’s forgiveness, but mine as well…
The idea and plot behind this novel were great, it's a nice lighthearted read, however it really could have used a better editor and some serious copy editing. The dialog was unrealistic, stilted and just not believable speech for real people. There were more than a few typos in the kindle version of this novel which yeah I know I'm one to talk about typos, but I'm just an average person voicing her opinion free of charge, I'm not a writer who's charging you money to read her words. Since readers are paying for the words on those pages, the least I think that could be done would be making sure typos, and bad paragraphing are corrected before public consumption. Some of the sections didn't really flow right, meaning when you read you shouldn't have to stop and think what is the writer trying to say here, it shouldn't be words on a page, it should be a story in your mind and I found myself stopping to reread sections to try to grasp what the writer was trying to say more than once. However I can also say this book had me laughing out loud often and was as funny as promised. Some of the comedic scenes are a bit far fetched but when the protagonist find themselves super glued to each other it's hard not to laugh even if the scenario isn't all that realistic. There were parts of the books that weren't really necessary and made the plot drag a bit as well, which leads me back to a good story that really needed a proper editor to trim and correct where corrections were needed. Overall a good book, but not a great one.
Why Romeo Hates Juliet: A Laugh Out Loud Romantic Comedy is by Anna Mara. This book takes place on Prince Edward’s Island in Canada. This is a really cute book and it definitely has parts which make you laugh out loud as well as parts that make you cry. It is an all-round escapism book that fits the bill during a quarantine. Juliet has writer’s block and a deadline she will not be able to meet unless her block breaks. If it doesn’t, she will need to return the $100,000 advance the book company gave her and which she no longer has. When her sister suggests a change of scenery, she accepts and they go off to PEI and Sara’s in-law’s beach house. The change in scenery seems to work and Juliet is working away on her book when a crew moves in next door and begins to play LOUD music and party all day. Fed up, Juliet goes next door to get the music turned down. She ends up in a fight with the man of the house – a physical one-, showing him into the TV and breaking it and hurting his back at the same time as well as giving him a black eye and both of them in jail! Romeo Boyd is having a downward spiral in his acting career and ends up on PEI to party at his beach house. Instead of fun and games, he finds himself with a hurt back, a black eye, and a charge of having drugs against him. It all had to do with the beautiful woman in the other cell. The last thing he wants to do is have anything to do with his neighbor. The fun is just beginning at the twin beach houses. Sit back and enjoy the view while Romeo and Juliet fight for themselves and love.
This was a funny laugh out loud kind of book that I really enjoyed up to a point. To be honest, I didn't finish it as there were so many highs and lows that I just got to the point I couldn't take anymore. I got to a point where they were happy and just left it at that, which was 70 to 80 percent of the way through the book.
Now, the parts that I read...GREAT...there was a lot of humorous situations, and the characters were likeable in their own flawed ways. But like I said, there was just so much packed in here that I reached the saturation point.
I still give it high marks, very well written and very entertaining.
The story of Romeo and Juliet though a little unbelievable at times was totally heartwarming and hilarious... I definitely laughed hard and outloud more than a few times during their plotting back and forth... I loved how both characters refused to back down from escalating the situation to the point where they ended up crazy in love before even realizing it... I'm definitely looking forward to reading more from Anna Mara. (her first title Her Perfect Revenge was pretty funny too but Romeo and Juliet belong in a league of their own... I have rarely read a book this long that managed to keep being funny and sweet without becoming boring and too predictable...)
So much fun!!! I was laughting so laud at some part, I was glad nobody could see me, they would have thought me totally crazy :). This book is a great read as it has everything. 2 hot and stubborn main characters, a perfect setting by the sea and a slow and unexpected story line. You never know what is gonna happen, who will have the craziest idea and most important, how it will backfire, which it always does haha. However, I have to say that despite loving Juliet, her decision regarding Romeo made me want to slap her a good time and wake her. Thanks Sara for being there and making her come back to Earth!!
Wow. Well that was complete crap. Now I'm not saying the whole book was but after finishing it..yeah I regret it. It started out with promise and a good premise and then you get to the main characters meeting. Holy shit did these 2 characters piss me off. Juliet was the worst lead female I ever read about. She was just idiotic and contradicted herself and was completely childish. Romeo was on the same level but at least he was less irritating and had a tad more rational than Juliet. The only person I did like in this was Tommy ..And he barley said anything. Had promise to be done so well and flopped completely.
As a hopeless romantic I found this a cute story. It was an easy fast read and I enjoyed it. I found it hard to put down at times, as it was both silly and funny. As a French Aries, I can relate to the bullheadedness displayed by both main characters and got some chuckles thinking of my own behavior some forty years ago. And yes, when your young and in love you do make stupid decisions which seem to make perfect sense at the time. I would read more books by Anna Mara. In my downtime I usually read 5 or more novels a week and choose a wide variety of authors pertaining to romantic comedy.
I laughed, cried, and cheered for Romeo & Juliet in their good times (and not so good times)
I enjoyed the witty back and forth conflict between the characters all the while the were seemingly oblivious to the fact that they were likely spurring their conflict on as a reason to stay close to one another. I ending was surprising and I loved how instead of making excuses for the behaviour the author illustrated the critical task of looking deep inside ourselves to find the underlying dark currents that cause us fear and taking ownership for the pain those fears sometimes cause to the people we love most.
I have to give this one a five star raring! I have not had so many chuckles in a book for quite some time. Juliet and Romeo are simply put hilarious. Every scheme she tries backfires and he just keeps provoking her. Then after getting shot by Juliet, Romero decides to fake amnesia and pretend that she is his wife. She goes along with the ruse but she has another trick up her sleeve. The book does get a bit serious toward the end and You wonder if they can stay together. Loved this book and will look forward to reading more by this author.
I'm going to get right to the point. This story has so many used themes like: enemies to lovers, celebrity and girl next door, evil other woman, and a whole lotta lies and misconceptions; ENOUGH ALREADY! I'm giving this 2.5 stars because I enjoyed the romance aspects but this book should have stopped after they finally are happy. I serious hate the ending and felt duped and let down because I wanted to like it. Just horrible.
I loved it. I found it funny and hard to put down. Loved all the characters just like I did "Her Perfect Revenge". I can't wait for the movie version, all I kept picturing was Josh Duhamel. He'd be sooo perfect for Romeo. I loved the ridiculousness of some of the scenarios but isn't that what a good book can be? Silly stupid things that don't happen in real life?!
I have never laughed so hard in all my life. Everything that happened between Romeo and Juliet was just incredible. My hat is off to Anna Mara for giving her readers an incredibly enjoyable story infused with so much humor. I encourage everyone to read this book and to tell others.
Once again, thank you Anna Mara for an enjoyable and fun time.
Loved, loved, loved this book! It was so funny wondering what Juliet & Romeo would do to the other one for revenge. At the same time, you couldn't help but to hope that they would end up together. I would definitely read a sequel to see how this couple is doing! I would definitely recommend this book!!❤❤
There is arrests, accidental shooting and houses burning down all the makings of a great love story. You will not be bored reading all the crazy antics that Romeo and Juliet go there just because they have to one up their hate for each other. I thought this book was quite funny and just when you think you know how it's gonna end a wrench get thrown into the mix yet again.
Too much. Too many devices. Too many scenes that made the book overly long. Too little editing that should have cut the story off long before the book ends. This just got to being a frustrating read.
This hilarious romance is spectacular! The crazy, zany things Juliet does to Romeo are simply hilarious. Their love is simply amazing and what Juliet in her infinite attempt to do the right thing is HEART wrenching. The pain from being apart breaks your heart. Great read!
