My newest book, FALLING INTO DREW, is available now! Its star is the yummy Drew O'Connor, a man I enjoyed spending time with and I hope you will too!

One of the best parts of writing novels is the chance to immerse myself in the world of my characters. I'll miss Diego and the rest of the people in the Legacy series, but my newest book's characters are just as intriguing.

After a long career in journalism (Harper's and TIME magazines), I must say that it's much more fun to write fiction than about real world events!

One of my greatest thrills is knowing that so many readers enjoy the stories I've created. I'm grateful to each and every person who's read my books (especially those who leave reviews so that other readers can find them).

LEGACY OF THE HIGHLANDS, A LEGACY OF REVENGE and LEGACY OF LOVE are available now.

My review:

Legacy of the Highlands by Harriet Schultz was a book which I could not put away! When I started reading it, I did not know what to expect, but when the author contacted me, the blurb caught my eye and honestly, I am glad that I read it. It was well written, it was thrilling read with intriguing plot and very lovable characters.

Regarding the plot:

Meet Alexandra who is a married woman and sending her husband to buy ice cream – and few hours later open the door to police. After she finds out that her husband has been brutally killed she does not see any meaning of staying in Boston and accepts an invitation to flee to Miami, to visit her husband’s best friend Diego.

Diego does not believe in unsolved mysteries and decides to find out what happened to his best friend. While Alex is visiting Diego, Diego is starting to investigate what happened and both Alex and Diego cannot deny the attraction what is growing between them.

The plot is fabulous! It was not obvious who was behind the murder and why Will was killed at all. The plot takes you to Scotland highlands and there are so many secrets which are revealed during the story, that it keeps surprising you. I read Legacy of the Highlands in one sitting, because it was such a good read! The author keeps surprising you constantly and that makes Legacy of the Highlands a very good romantic suspense.

Regarding the characters:

I loved Alex! I think she was adorable. She is brave and strong woman to taking the trip back to Scotland to find out what happened to her husband. She is vulnerable and in pain after her loss, but she is willing to give a chance to Diego who simply sweeps her feet away. She has some doubts, but she is so connected to life that she moves on to the next chapter in her life. I liked that she is letting go of the past.

When I said, that I loved Alex, then Diego was a man which is probably any woman’s fictional dream – handsome, wealthy, with good heart, faithful, persistent, romantic and last, but not least intelligent. He has loved Alex from the very first time he met her, but since Alex was not his, he kept his distance, until Alex is alone again.

I think that Will’s family was fascinating. What a mess of a family! The intrigues what are coming out through the characters of Will’s father and mother – it’s incredibly well written! They have an essential role to carry throughout the story and I think the author did an excellent job with them.

Generally:

I would highly recommend Legacy of the Highlands by Harriet Schultz. The story is good, suspense and romance mixed in a story which carries you away and after you have turned the last page you will ache for more! I am looking very much forward to read next books written by Harriet Schultz – keep an eye on her releases!

It has been a while since I have read a romantic suspense and I was ready to read something a little more adult after all the YA's I have been reading lately, don't get me wrong, I love the YA genre but sometimes you just need something that doesn't involve teenage angst and all that comes with it.

Which could be why when Harriet approached me with reviewing her new book I jumped at the chance to read it.

After reading the synopsis I knew it would be something I could really enjoy and I really truly did.

The writing was so well done and the plot was fantastic. It kept me turning the pages, in fact I almost read it all in one sitting.

The characters were all fabulous and while I didn't feel a connection to any of them, it just wasn't necessary in this book. The storyline was so captivating that I found myself more wrapped up in it than anything else.

I love that this one had an open ended ending so that it left it wide open for a sequel (which I would love to see happen!). I wouldn't mind a little more Diego time!

This truly was very well done and I really hope that Harriet comes out with another book soon because I think she is truly talented.

I will be perfectly honest...when I first chose this book, I wasn't sure if I was going to like it. It was out of my comfort zone, and I was a little bit nervous about reading it. I'm used to reading paranormal and Young Adult books. HOWEVER, I was pleasantly surprised when I read the book.

However, because it was out of my comfort zone, it took me a little while to get into the book. BUT once I was hooked I WAS HOOKE! The characters really came to life, and I actually found myself CARING about them. I felt terrible for Alex, the leading female MC, and I fell instantly in love with Diego. No sooner was I hooked, did I start DREAMING, yes, DREAMING about Harriet's characters.

If you are into Romance Thrillers, and like a little history lesson in between, THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU! I can't wait to read more of Harriet's books in the future!

I started reading the book this morning and I haven't been able to put it down. Alex and Will are perfect couple. But when Will has been murdered, I cried with Alex. Gosshhhh this book is very sad... very heart breaking, my heart goes out to Alex in early chapter.

A Sgian Dubh - Scottish dagger, Gaelic for 'black knife".. was found beside Will's body
Sgian dubh

Murder mysteries story can keep you captivated for hours and look what they did to me. This book cause me a lack of sleep, skipped lunch and had a late dinner. It made me smile and laugh but it also brought me to tears. I love that wonderful mix of emotion.

This is a wonderful book and I recommend it.

This story has it all - love lost, heartache, despair, romance, intrigue, suspense and mystery. This is a hard book to put down and I can guarantee that within the first two pages you will find your kindle riveted to your hands. The plot is intelligent, creative and imaginative. The writing style of this author is very natural and the story flows easily and comfortably. I found myself intensely drawn into the tale and felt quite bereft when this book was finished. I would very much like to read more from Ms Schultz and would recommend this story to anyone who enjoys a book in which they can get lost.

I started off reading Lust and Honor by Harriet Schultz and ended up thrilled by the story, yet disappointed it was just a teaser. My disappointment turned into excitement when I discovered the continued story in Legacy of the Highlands. I really enjoyed this fast moving love story that involved my favourite country (Scotland); I look forward to seeing if there is more to this story as it did end in a manner that it could continue. Cudos to the author.

Most of my blog and twitter followers know that I love a good romantic suspense. I love the heightened emotions and truly I love to read about the villain getting his. I'm also a fan of historical fiction and so I was very excited to read this book by Harriet.

Let me start with the parts of the book I thought were done well, the historical research and the suspense. The history included in this book is fascinating and I loved how it was presented. When the story was done, I immediately wanted to look up some of the things Harriet mentioned to see how much was creativity on her part and how much of it was real history. It's really amazing stuff!

I also thought she created a compelling suspense story and the characters she created to move the suspense forward were interesting. She plotted the suspense portion of this story extremely well and it's not only fast paced, but you do keep trying to guess how this can come to a end, especially in light of the historical aspects of the story.

What didn't work for me was the romance. Honestly, this book would have been so much better for me if it was a straight up suspense without the romance included. This might not be true for everyone as the reasons I have for the romance not working might not bother another reader. I can't go into too much detail in order not to let out any spoilers, but I just never bought into the romance situation or time-frame that it occurs in.

Likewise, the heroine is so different seeming between her suspense scenes vs. her romantic scenes it was to follow her story and believe in her romantic actions. It was hard to connect with the heroine since I didn't agree with what was going on romantically, which disappointed me since based on the first few chapters I really wanted to cheer for this character.

Style wise, the story set-up and flow were very well done but there were a few scenes that head-hopping pulled me out of the action sometimes. Mostly though, I was really into the historical story and also the suspense storyline and found that it propelled me along even if I wanted to forget the romantic plot that just didn't jive for me. It seemed almost as if the romance had been added to the story later to fit around the suspense.

Again, this would have made an excellent straight suspense story and the Scottish history alone is fascinating and worth the read. Harriet moves a story along very well and her story was very entertaining. The romance just went into territory I couldn't buy in to so that didn't work, but it might for other readers. If you like Scottish history and suspense I think you'll enjoy this book for those alone!

Alexandra and Will Cameron are a young, attractive couple with their future ahead of them, until a tragic event in an alley one evening robs Will of his life, leaving Alexandra a devastated widow. The only clue to Will’s murder is the presence of a Scottish sgian dubh dagger which is found beside him. Alexandra is ably supported in her grief by Diego Navarro, Will’s best friend, who is determined to get to the bottom of his friend’s murder, but, at the same time, is fighting his feelings for his best friend’s widow. Diego has the means, and determination, to find Will’s murderers, and his and Alexandra’s quest for justice takes them on a globe-trotting quest which spans from Miami to Scotland, which in turn unlocks previously buried Cameron family secrets and brings these to the fore...

LEGACY OF THE HIGHLANDS is a fast-moving, entertaining story of love, honor and family, which is carried off with great panache. The characters are all realistic and three-dimensional, especially lead protagonist Alexandra Cameron, who is portrayed with much sympathy, but for whom the reader never feels pity. Alexandra is alternately spunky, fun, serious, sensual, and the reader is always on her side, never becoming obnoxious or unsympathetic. Her relationship with Diego is spirited and one never knows where it will lead, which is a good source of suspense in the story. The intrigue plotline could have turned into an espionage caper in lesser hands, but it is always related to the characters, and tied in well. Overall I cannot fault the story, but, there is one element I wished I could have seen more of.

The character of Anne Cameron, Will’s waspish, haughty mother, was a fascinating counterpoint in the story to the other characters. I would have liked to have had an even closer glimpse into her psyche, but, in retrospect, her presence is heavily felt whenever she is in the story, and, maybe this does work in the way that the focus is on Alexandra and Diego, and the supporting characters such as Anne are utilized to great degree. I was satisfied by the ending which, while not addressing all of the story’s loose ends, serves its purpose in a realistic manner as life is never totally cut and dry. From a story standpoint, the ending leaves the door open to further stories which can be explored at some stage with the central characters. If you are looking for a book which offers a little bit of everything, I highly recommend LEGACY OF THE HIGHLANDS.

If you would like an introduction to the characters of LEGACY OF THE HIGHLANDS, be sure to read its prequel, LUST AND HONOR, which is also a very entertaining story.

This is the first book in the Legacy series and it is full of intrigue, danger and romance, all the things I love about romantic suspense. The characters were engaging and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

When Will Cameron goes out late one night to get ice cream he never comes home. His wife is puzzled by who would kill him; unaware that there are forces from hundreds of years ago that has brought this horror upon the Cameron’s.

Diego Navarro was best friends with Will, they were still working on a project together when he died but a few months ago they had a falling out. Their families have known each other for years, before the boys were born and they held a secret that tore two best friends apart.

When they find Will in the alley, there is a Scottish dagger left by his side, it was not used as a weapon but as a sign for the Cameron's. Will’s father, John used to funnel money illegally to a group dedicated to the independent nationhood for Scotland called The Group of One Hundred but he did not like the violent direction the group was taking and turned them in causing several go to jail which made this blood feud fall directly on the Cameron family.

After the funeral Diego takes Alex to Florida to get away and as they try to find out who killed Will they grow closer together and their attraction turns to love. But when they travel to Scotland to learn more, secrets are revealed that bring danger to both Alex and Diego.

This book is non-stop action from beginning to end.

I want you to know that after the first few pages, this story jumped into high gear, and I couldn’t put it down. I had to know what was going on. Why had this murder happened? And even when it was explained, I wanted to know more.

This story is absolutely heart stopping and has a lot of twists and turns. I wanted to hurry and finish it so I would know how it ended, but I also wanted to savor it along the way. This is not just another mystery. It is a wonderful example of how a suspense novel should be written. It kept me on my toes the entire time I was reading it.

Mixed in was a love story that was touching, warm and honest. It had plenty of heat, but the emotions were primary to the relationship. And the love story fit in so well that you could see that it was a very important portion of the whole plot in this tale. Without it, the story wouldn't have worked. Even the hero in this story had secrets that were part of the things that were going on.

I couldn’t help but feel some sympathy for some of the Scots, but not for all of them. It was fascinating the way past history was woven into the story and the author's imagination was just amazing.

Watch out Tom Clancy. This is one of the most exciting, hold-your-breath stories I’ve read in a long, long time. Except, unlike Clancy, there’s a bit of sexy romance involved.

Legacy of the Highlands was a fantastic book that I devoured with pleasure. I can't wait to see what this author does next. She's got amazing talent and I'll be first in line for whatever she releases.

What do you get when you write a hot romance, with a tall, dark and sexy hero and a not atypical, please save me, I'm a clumsy virgin who is in way over her head, but a smart, sexy proactive heroine and THEN throw in political intrigue, murder, a lesson in history and sex......you get Legacy of the Highlands. Legacy of the Highlands is not in my wheelhouse if usual reads..I usually end up reading romantic eroticas and chic lit full of misspellings, grammatical errors and filled with thans rather then THENS...you get the picture. I loved this book, the Hero, Diego, is not so,e over the top Alpha male who gets his kicks with some whimpering, simpering heroine. Alex, our heroine, is smart, savvy, prone to flirting and has great friends and healthy relationships. I particularly enjoyed Alex's conversations with her BFF Francie, they were fun, realistic and flowed beautifully. ms. Schultz's attention to detail and her research paid off big time. The author took a subject I knew nothing about, detailed the historical and the contemporary aspect of Scotland's fight for independence from England. I was never bored, carried my ereader into the bathroom with me and sat for four solid hours reading this book. Everything about this book was spot on from pacing to love scenes...this book has it all.

I've had this book on my to read shelf for some time now. Moved it to the top recently and I had only wanted to read a sample to see how I would like it. I read straight through pretty much to a couple of 100 pages. So much for sampling :)

It just started so strong out the gate that I just needed to know. Page turner for me for sure.

The suspense was really well done here and I liked the change of scenery from many of the other romantic suspense that I read.

I don't like putting spoilers in reviews so I'll just say that I was really captivated by the scottish suspense part going back to the 14th century.
I did look some of the things up as I was intrigued. But then anything scottish is like catnip to me :)

I wasn't sure how a romance would work between the leads, considering the heroine just lost her husband. It worked though. The dead husband is basically dead at the start, so there wasn't this bonding with the reader, or it would have been an issue for me. That isn't a spoiler as its in the blurb.

There were a couple of times where I would liked to have experienced the action happening as it was happening, not being told afterwards.

It was a really good page turning romantic suspense am looking forward to the next which I think picks up 2 years from the end of this one.

After Will dies, Alex is left broken hearted. As she grieves, Alex slowly learns of secrets, legends, and lies. Why was Will murdered? To heal and recover she stays with Diego, her husband's best friend. Then off on a wild ride to Scotland. There is plenty of suspense, romance, humor, danger, excellent writing and amazing characters to keep the most jaded reader entertained. From Diego and Alex to the bad guys and everyone in between, these characters have a ton of depth. They're also very real. By the end of the book, I ended up with just one really bad guy in a story that was filled with them.

Amazing. I love it!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The story moved at a brisk pace and was a real page turner for me. I'm generally a very slow reader but I read this one in record time. As soon as I reached the last page and sighed over such a good read, I immediately opened the sequel. The book had great characters, creepy villains and nice locations. The author knew her stuff but there was never a feeling of 'look at the research I did!' throughout the story. Everything flowed nicely. I'm glad I get to spend another 300 pages with these characters as I read the sequel. And Diego...oh my.

A well written, exciting story. Anxiously awaiting the next book that HAS TO BE continuing the story. Enjoyed traveling to FL convalescing with Alex and the romance dance she and Diego played and the travels to Highlands of Ireland. Would love to learn more about her best friend (Francie), her husband and Serge (could he come be my bodyguard?). Fun, fast reading that had me hooked from the first day.

An awesome mystery with a little Scottish thrown in and I knew would be hooked. My only regret was reading this over the Christmas holidays. Otherwise the book would not have left my hands until it was complete. I loved the historical infusion into the story. The ending left me with a few questions unanswered but otherwise I really enjoyed it!

I received a copy of this book in return for an unbiased review.

I loved this book! The author did a fantastic job combining drama, suspence, intrigue and romance. This is the first book in a series and while it didn't end in a cliffhanger, per se, it is clear that this brilliant story continues. I liked it so much, I can't wait to read the others!

I enjoyed this passionate, adventuresome love story between Alex and Diego! Their journey to find the murderer of Alex’s husband, Will, kept me glued to the story. While they searched for the people responsible for Will’s murder, I liked “visiting” Boston and Scotland. Serge was an interesting, highly skilled bodyguard. I hope to see more of him in the next book. I enjoyed this strong, beautiful, tempestuous couple! I look forward to reading the next book in this series! BTW, I had the pleasure of meeting the author, Harriet Schultz and her sweet husband on a trip not long ago. She is a lovely lady and has a great sense of humor!

Well... not sure what to do with this book. I liked it, but I didn't love it.

Here's what I liked:
* Serge's character - I especially like the way the author describes him as a "buff Brad Pitt" at one point. He stayed true to character, even though he made a few mistakes. But that's where the interest and drama are at!

* Will - He's almost too perfect, and then we learn about something he did... the very thing that caused a giant riff in his friendship with his best friend since grammar school, Diego. That "thing" goes back to a rather bizarre story, almost unbelievable. I realize it gave the author a way to proceed with the story and all, but... to me, this was a stretch in many, many ways. Not only Will's actions, which seem out of character for the perfect guy and perfect husband, but the "act" that led to the letters that led Will to take the action he did, which led to the "event" that caused the riff. Following me yet? (I don't want to mark a bunch of spoilers, so I'm simply trying to talk around things. If you haven't read the book yet, my review might not help you decide whether to read it or not.)

* Interesting historical stuff - If I've heard of the Declaration of Arborath (which might be briefly mentioned in The Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon), I wasn't well acquainted with it. The concept of the One Hundred was very interesting. I suppose there are likely lots of folks still rallying for a free Scotland; it's tough, sometimes, to remember that Scotland still isn't a sovereign country. (That's an American for you, right?)

* What caused Will's death - OK, I can buy this, even though when you step back and think about it, it seems kind of hokey. But if you know your Scottish history at all or even a little like I do, I can see it. It's a stretch, but I bought this. I just didn't like all the build-up to how and why the person who was responsible was involved.

* The conspirators - Again, even though the One Hundred seems a bit hokey, I can see it. And I liked the layers of the men involved. I liked that they weren't all in agreement. I liked the emotions and expressions of Jamie, the grandson. These people made sense to me. Their actions seemed real and true.

Here's what I'm not sure about:
* The prequel - What has "Lust and Honor" got to do with this story? The two seemed like completely different things and people to me. If you haven't read the prequel, don't bother, IMO.

* The "act" that caused the "event" which caused the riff between Diego and Will - Once again, this just seemed... odd. Especially because it involves 2 rather cold fish, Will's parents. They just don't seem the type to me, despite the author mentioning that each has had discrete affairs through the years. The fact that comes from all of this is just too convenient - for the plot and for our heroine, Alex.

* Our hero, Diego - He's a bit too mercurial for me; one minute, he's calm and the next he's punching someone. He doesn't always make good decisions, either. He's too arrogant. He might be devastatingly handsome and a good friend to Alex & Will, but... I sure wouldn't fall for this guy. And I didn't really want Alex to, either. His machismo seemed over-the-top, even for a Venezuelan. I suppose, overall, it was his mercurial behavior that got me. He seemed like the kind of guy who might actually beat a woman, even though I'm sure the author didn't intend for readers to get that idea. And yes, he did take good care of Alex; he never harmed her in any way. But I just didn't really like him.

* Our heroine, Alex(andra) - I appreciate her reaction to Will's death; it read like genuine grief, even the running away part. But the whole thing between Alex & Diego just seems too soon. And the reveal that Diego tells Alex makes her decision to jump into bed with him and justify it to herself seems convenient. If we did a fast-forward to 1 year from Will's death, I'd buy the relationship between Diego and Alex and the whole trip to Scotland. But within a 3 month time period, this all seems too fast.

Yes, Alex has known Diego for years. And yes, she's likely been attracted to him, just in the back of her mind, since she'd chosen Will to love. BUT... too much too soon.

Otherwise, I liked her determined attitude, and I mostly liked her.

* The cover - OK, so what the heck is this a picture of? I'm guessing it's supposed to be Scotland, but....

So there you have it. I can't say that I was bored with the story, and I found some of it quite fascinating. But overall, it was between OK and Like.

Will Cameron was a nice man - a good man - but a man who could sense that he was being followed. All the way down to the depths of his soul, he knew that something was off, but just couldn’t explain his feelings to his beloved wife, Alexandra.

Putting his worries aside for a few hours, Will and Alex have the perfect evening that so many couples dream of, before a ‘craving’ hits that sends Will out into the streets of the Boston Back Bay neighborhood they lived in to fetch something for his wife. Unfortunately, that would be the last time that Alex ever saw her perfect husband and lived her perfect life.

The next knock on Alex’s condo door is not her husband who had forgotten his key, it is the form of Detective O’Shea, explaining to Alex that her husband was killed in an alley just a few short yards away. The scene was quite bloody. No items were taken, such as a wallet, which takes away the robbery angle - only an odd Scottish dagger was found, left by Will’s side that made it look like an actual ‘calling card’. Alex barely understands what’s going on. In fact, if not for her best friend Francie showing up and taking over, Alex would’ve fallen apart all together.

When the funeral arrives, a man by the name of Diego Navarro appears to pay his respects. For a good, long time Diego and Will were friends until they had a falling out that neither ever explained. These boyhood friends had simply gone their separate ways and never spoke again. Diego, however, still refers to Will as family and he, his money, his private jet, and unlimited resources turn out to be the bright light for Alex. Going with Diego to his mansion in Miami, Alex finds an escape from Boston and Will’s cold, unfeeling parents. In Florida, surrounded by Diego’s lovely house staff, she can try to regroup from losing the man she so loved who was murdered in a way that no one can explain.

Now Will’s parents back in Boston have their own secrets. Mom, Anne, is beyond angry. She can’t believe that because of her husband’s ridiculous Scottish ancestors and his need to funnel money to tartan terrorists to further his own father’s quest for Scottish independence, may have just taken her only son away from her.

She is so disgusted with her husband that she can barely breathe, wondering if it is really possible that some splinter group vying for freedom from England actually killed her son. Anne will stop at nothing to flay her husband for his mistakes, while they dig deep to find out who exactly proposed this sentence of death on the Cameron bloodline.

While Alex sits in Florida and tries to regroup, she looks back on the one time she and Will visited Scotland on vacation, and ended up meeting a man named Mackinnon, who walked them through their lineage, and had Will so excited about his ancestors that he was practically a giddy child while they were there. But as the memories all come together and more and more information is unveiled about Will’s parents, Diego Navarro, secret agents, undercover fighters, and more, begin to unveil the secrets and lies that each have been keeping.

With each page and each new character and plot, this story goes from good to great, as the shots of adrenaline begin to flow. Not to mention, every time you believe you have a handle on the ‘back-story,’ you end up wrong. The plot thickens as past mistakes, legendary documents, and a huge secret comes to life that is definitely placed in the category of the ‘sins of the parent.’

With shades of James Bond, Nick and Nora Charles, - even a little Sherlock Holmes - this particular author has made sure to offer up very cool history, locales and characters that make you read the book so fast that you turn around and start all over in order to get that thrill again!

After a passionate, sexy evening, Will Cameron goes out to buy some ice cream. He's worried and has something to tell his wife, Alexandra or Alex, but decides not to mar a perfect evening. Four hours later Alex awakens to find two policemen at her door, announcing Will is dead. She's obviously overcome and her friend Francie helps her make it through the funeral and luncheon held thereafter. Alex blames herself for mentioning the alley that was a quicker way home but also the place where her beloved was killed!

She's also annoyed that Will's former best but now estranged friend has shown up for the funeral but is so overcome with grief and inability to handle Will's family and friends that she allows Diego Navarro to take over. She tells him she has to get to Logan Airport and get out of Boston and soon thereafter she is comfortably resting and recovering in Diego's Florida home, a luxurious retreat where rest and food prepared by a caring maid allows Alex to begin the healing process. But Diego has something to confess to Alex as well as his overwhelming feelings for her that are beginning to slip out. More and more, she is also responding to him, a rather incredible response given the depth of her love for Will and the short passage of time since his death. Whatever is happening here?

The plot thickens as a family secret and an ultimate betrayal connected with Scotland begins to emerge. Scotland has small segments of its population who want separation from England and have signed a certain document in which members of an elite group vow to do everything possible to further the cause of separation from England - and not peaceful. Yes, financial and other agreements leading to Scottish independence are not enough for this group, and Will becomes the means to punish the one who chose other priorities. How will they do it? The story moves from Boston to Florida to Boston to Scotland and back home to Boston. Will's family is guarding some devastating facts that prove to be unforgiveable. Punish the family before the betrayer. But they don't realize that Diego and his bodyguard, a former Massad agent, have different plans and they are not peaceful either? How much will Alex play along?

Harriet Schultz has written a fascinating mystery/thriller novel. There's a bit too much of waiting for the story to evolve but it's worth the wait as events begin to spin out of control both on the personal front between Diego and Alex and on the international front for those seeking revenge. Will there be a satisfactory finale? Read it and discover what possibilities follow for all involved in this lethal story! Nicely done, Ms. Schultz!

The premise of Legacy of the Highlands sounded fantastic to me. A young man is killed because of a centuries old blood feud and his family and friends are left to unravel the reasons and track down his killer. Yes please. I liked those elements. The unraveling of the history behind the attack wasn’t really predictable, but still believable. In fact, I liked the majority of the story line. The one exception being the romance between the two main characters.

Will’s brutal murder happens within the first two chapters. He and his wife Alex have a seemingly perfect marriage. The two are clearly soul mates, so it makes sense that Alex would be utterly devastated when Will dies. In fact, Ms. Schultz does a remarkable job capturing Alex’s broken spirit and despair. I could almost feel my heart breaking with hers. At the funeral, Alex starts to reconnect with Will’s former best friend, Diego. Alex is in such a terrible state that she turns to Diego for help. Fortunately, Diego is obscenely wealthy and whisks Alex away to his home in Miami on his family’s private jet.

Alex takes a few months to recover in Florida, but while she’s there, she begins to notice that she is drawn to Diego in more than a friendly way. This is the part of the story I had a problem with. As readers, we know that Alex was so heartbroken and lost after Will’s death, that it was debatable as to whether or not she would recover. And only a few months later, she’s lusting after her dead husband’s best friend. Granted, we do see Alex struggle with this same issue, but I just couldn’t wrap my head around it. And I certainly couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that Diego was encouraging it. It’s one thing for a grieving widow to feel some confusion in her feelings, but at times it felt like Diego was taking advantage of it. That didn’t work for me.

That said, the adventure in this story is great. The characters were real people – Ms. Schultz is extremely good at showing personalities though conversations and word choice. Though the story focuses on Alex and Diego, their budding romance isn’t the centerpiece. It’s more about how they are both out to avenge Will’s murder. Throw in a supporting cast complete with off-the-wall best friend, smug bodyguard, and a legion of Scottish terrorists, and you’re in for a wild ride.

Don't let this books title or cover fool you. This is a romantic suspense/mystery all tied into one.

There is a bit of a slow start, and a very sad start. About 1/4th of the way in it gets rolling and you are thrust into the mystery of why a man was suddenly murdered and how a 700 year vow and a father's choices led to it.

Poor, poor Alex, I will admit I was heartbroken for her. Losing her husband literally destroys her ability to function. It is such a sad thing to read about. Schultz does an amazing job of detailing her emotions.

I love that we get a taste of Will and his personality in the beginning and through flashbacks.

Diego is such a sweet male lead. He does everything in his power to comfort Alex and help her without trying to let his needs or feelings he's had for her since the beginning cloud his judgement. When their relationship does begin it really feels like a smooth transition and not something that they jumped into.

There is a bit of an abrupt ending, but overall join the ride from grief, to mystery and suspense complete with twists, and eventually love and acceptance.

The first mystery that I could get through

Oh there was romance but you won't get to hear the juicy parts. The author has left that up to you. I can't read mysteries because I have no clue or patience to wait for the ending. This was good enough for me to have just a little bit of patience and not look at the end of the story. I was holding my breath and up late last night to finish reading.

Exciting and romantic story!

The 'teaser' about Scotland and adventure caught my attention. Once I started reading this book, I couldn't wait to get back to Alex and Diego's adventure!

There were a few spots that dragged the story some, but overall this is a book I will recommend to friends. Looking forward to the next book.

I won a copy of Legacy of the Highlands by Harriet Schultz in March, 2015. It arrived just before the sale of my house and move to another address. I have just found it among the unpacking. Let me just say that this was an engaging read. I did enjoy it and would recommend it to others.
