Sky Blue: A Western Story by Max Brand

Rate this book
Alfred Larribee is sent by his father to live with his cousin's family in the West. Larribee proves to be lazy and shiftless... spending most of his time in town... drinking and gambling... even cheating at cards. What changes all this is the appearance of Sky Blue... a magnificent stallion that has never been ridden. Dan Gurry is the owner and hopes to find a cowboy who can ride Sky Blue... but the first one to try is seriously injured. After that no one is willing to volunteer to try again except Larribee.

So long. And soooooo sloooooooow. At the end I really didn't care about Sky Blue. Stupid horse should have stayed stolen and saved me time.

As far as westerns go this was an okay book. The characters seemed a bit flat to me, except for the horse. The ending was really good, and I would read this book again just for that reason. It seemed a little repetitive to me, I'm not sure if it was because I'd read a story like it before or if the plot went in circles but I got a repetitive feel from it. If you are into horses then I would recommend this book. The horse is the main theme of the book so even if the story isn't too great you've got your horse story.

This is actually the second time I read this book. I saw it on my Kindle while trying to free up memory on my iPad and couldn't remember what it was about. Intending just to refresh my memory, I started to re-read just the first few pages but was drawn in again and couldn't put it down until I finished it for the second time. Brand's slightly odd style of writing is comfortably familiar to me, I was transported by his tale about the bond between an extraordinary horse and an even more extraordinary man.

A ON E_HOTRSE STAMPEDE

The magic of Max Brand is found in his descriptions and dialogs. His descriptions are word pictures, spoken as though from a protagonist in his\her vernacular. His story line is relatively simple, but ends with the reader surprised, satisfied and delighted. His simple story of Sky Blue, a huge, wild stallion is artfully written. The ending will satisfy and delight.

Utterly marvelous--full of all the sweeping grandeur one expects of a vintage western, written in the unflinching language of a cowboy poet. Loved it.
