Of course we were out to be used by the Americans.
However, I honestly think that the Filipinos were incapable of self-government. Those who deserved to lead were pushed aside: Antonio Luna was murdered by Aguinaldo; Mabini was ignored, and people like Miguel Malvar became footnotes. Part of a country being able to govern itself is dictated by its ability to choose its leaders, and we didn't have that. Outside of the 1950s string of presidents, we still don't have the ability. Acceptable just doesn't cut it, and that was all we had with Cory - who, for what it's worth - also tended towards an oligarchy.
Freedom got us a kleptocratic dictator and a string of lesser thieves. I think statehood, like what Rizal proposed, was a better answer, as we are too uninformed as regards choosing the right leaders.
