Uses the same signature format and style as the series' previous titles. The question "Who am I?" and a linked written clue invites kids to lift the first portion of the folded page to reveal another clue and more of the animal, and then a final fold-out shows the whole dino. The featured dinosaurs quetzalcoatlus, diplodocus, stegosaurus, Tyrannosaurus Rex, ankylosaurus, triceratops.
Simms Taback was an American writer, graphic artist, and illustrator of more than 35 books. He won the 2000 Caldecott Medal for U.S. picture book illustration, recognizing Joseph Had a Little Overcoat, and was a runner-up in 1998 for There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly.
“Dinosaurs” by Simms Taback’s is an amazing illustrated book on dinosaurs. On each left page of the book is a question “who am I?” and it also reveals part of a dinosaur. On each right page it gives a hint leading to what type of dinosaur for example, “I have a long tail”. The book is a fold out book and on each page as you open it up it reveals a picture of a dinosaur. The book goes through different types of dinosaur such as, diplodocus, stegosaurus and Tyrannosaurus Rex. This book is great for young children to become familiar with the different types of dinosaurs. The general age range for this book is primary ages 3-5. The book is mostly pictures with a few simple words describing the dinosaur. Primary age children would enjoy the books pictures and fold out pictures. The artistic elements throughout the book are fascinating. The colors range from cool to warm and are bold. The colors stand out and make you draw your attention towards the pictures. Lining is used to outline the dinosaurs shape and the different objects in the picture. Shapes are used, specifically geometric. In addition, the pages in the book have a smooth and glossy texture. This type of art is considered impressionistic art because of the emphasis of light and color. I would recommend this book to primary children because the book has amazing pictures of dinosaurs and children would love to see the different illustration. The fold out’s allows the children to be active and create suspense when looking at the book.
Dinosaur board book with a clever twist - as you open each page, it shows the dinosaur's hind quarters and gives a hint. The first one says, "Who am I? I have a long tail... You flip the right hand page up and there's another clue - "and a long neck". When you foldout one more time to the left, it tells you what kind of dinosaur it is. I can see this being enjoyed by my preschool storytime and possibly by some dino-driven toddlers. The pages are thicker, but you still need to take a little bit of care with it. We just got a copy for the library, so I will be interested to see how it will hold up, because I can see it being very popular and checked out often.
Dinosaurs was perfect for Toddler Storytime because it introduced the kids to different types of dinosaurs they had never heard of! The fold out pages turned the book into a guessing game for them, and they had a lot of fun shouting out ideas of what they thought the dinosaur was.
Cool book but not great for younger kids who would get the most out of the flap design. Recommended for young dinosaur fans (met a 6-year-old who loved it).
Un super livre à deviner sur les dinosaures avec un rabat pour chaque Indice. Très simple et adapté aux tous jeunes amateurs et amatrices de dinosaures.
This is a great book to introduce dinosaurs to babies. Try mimicking dinosaur sounds when the flaps are fully opened before your babies' faces, mine was in awe. We read this for the one hundred and twenty-first time and is still going. Check out our video on our blog http://www.mommychuck.com/2012/11/of-...
Simms Taback is at it again with an awesome giant fold-out book about dinosaurs. Boys are always attracted to this text in my classroom. This is an ideal mentor text for questioning and inferencing for young students. Such a fun book for primary-ages students!
