From the bestselling author of Trust Me, I'm a Vet, this is Cathy Woodman's fifth novel about love, animals and the countryside. Swept up in a whirlwind romance, Tessa is about to marry, but on the day of her wedding when one of her oldest friends, Jack, interrupts the ceremony, she changes her mind. Her doubts about her groom are confirmed later when she discovers the extent of his debts and that he has been sleeping with her close girlfriend.
Tessa is a vet nurse with no job and no home, and it appears that she will have to live with her parents for the rest of her life, until her aunt, Fifi Green, offers her a position managing Talyton Animal Rescue's Sanctuary. The committee of Talyton Animal Rescue fall out with Fifi who did not consult them, the charity's assets are frozen, there is a shortage of volunteers and too many animals turning up at the door.
How will Tessa cope with these challenges? How will she deal with her changing feelings for Jack, who as well as ruining her big day, is the local animal welfare officer?
I began my working life as a small-animal vet. Like turning the pages in a book, I was never quite sure what was going to happen at the surgery next. From the sausage dog who swallowed a sewing needle to the telly addict of a rabbit who lost an eye to infection, there was never a dull moment.
I have always loved to read, escaping into all kinds of novels during those long nights on call, but I didn’t have much time to pursue writing until after my children were born and I gave up full-time work to look after them. I joined a creative writing group and entered all the writing competitions I could find.
My break into becoming a published author came in 2002 when I was joint winner of the Harry Bowling First Novel Award. At the award ceremony, I met Laura Longrigg of MBA Literary Agents who signed me up on delivery of a finished manuscript.
In April 2003, Laura rang to say that Headline were offering me a two book deal. I had to dial 1471 to check she really had called me and I wasn’t dreaming.
My first novel, Under The Bonnet, was published in November 2004. My second, Our House, was published in 2005, the third, Family Matters in 2006, and the fourth, The Boy Next Door in 2007.
Since then, I’ve been working on an exciting new project, a series of novels about The Otter House Vets, a fictional practice set in a quiet Devonshire market town. Trust Me, I’m a Vet, which will be published in paperback by Arrow Books in April 2010, closely followed by the second book in September 2010.
Since I last updated my website, my menagerie of animals has grown, much to my family’s delight. We now share our lives with two cats, three mad Border Terriers, two ponies and two pet rats which we found abandoned to starve in a cage in the woods nearby. You should have heard my husband’s sigh of resignation when I told him we were bringing them home!
I have always been a firm fan of Cathy Woodman, when I read It’s a Vets Life last year I thought we had seen the end of the vet series of books by this author but then I hear there is a new one called The Village Vet, I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a copy to see what is going to happen in the idyllic village of Talyton St George.
The Village Vet focuses on a new character Tessa Wilde, when we first meet Tessa she is about to get married but after her ex Jack arrives at church pleading with Tessa not to marry Nathan she soon gets cold feet not that she would admit that it is because of Jacks outburst.
Tessa is left single and with a huge sum of debt and no home until her aunt gives her a life line and offers Tessa the opportunity to run the new local animal sanctuary but there was one thing Tessa didn’t bargain on and that was how close she would be working with Jack, thing is have the two still got feelings for each other that could result in them rekindling their old romance?
Cathy Woodman creates yet another loveable down to earth character in Tessa. It took no time at all to warm to her character, unfortunately I didn’t have the same thoughts about Tessa’s best friend Katie from the first moment I met her I instantly had my guard up about her I took an instant dislike to her character and felt as though she was hiding something and after a few chapters I thought I knew what it was she was hiding and I was right although it was predictable I enjoyed the build up awaiting the truth to arise.
We have yet another handsome and charming vet in Jack he did have a similar feel to Alex in previous books but I also loved his character so I am not going to complain about that! The relationship both professional and personal, between Tessa and Jack is what really makes this book the constant will they won’t they throughout the book makes this a real page turner. It is quite clear whilst reading this book that the author has had experience within the vet world as we meet many different animals with various ailments that all need re-homing and with the author putting detailed information into this fictional book it makes the story feel very realistic.
I love that some of the characters from the previous books make an appearance again in this book giving a familiar feel to the book.
If you love animals and are looking for a cosy country book with a gentle pace for your weekend read then The Village Vet needs to be next on your to be read list.
Loved this. Great holiday read. A wedding day that does not happen. Gets out in charge of animal sanctuary which gives lovely descriptions Of The animals she takes in and of course there is love
The epitome of chick-lit. syrupy sweet and terribly predictable. As an animal lover, I really wanted to like it, but even the animal stories lacked a sense of realism. The story is set in an animal sanctuary, where there appear to be more people involved in the running of it, than there are animals in residence!
This book was pretty cliche and not very interesting. The heroine was one of those really stupid heroines who is so dumb that their stupidity is difficult to comprehend. Let me explain....
*SPOILER ALERT* The books starts off with the heroine of the story, Tessa, driving to her wedding where she is going to marry a man she has only known for six months and who refuses to tell her he loves her. By the end of chapter one it becomes obvious that her fiance is a golddigging narcissist who is cheating on her with her best friend. However, Tessa is so dumb that she missed every red flag in the book. She doesn’t realize her fiancé is a gold digger until the end of chapter two, and she doesn’t realize her best friend was banging him until near the end of the book. Both of these things are supposed to be shocking discoveries/revelations, and while idiotic Tessa may be surprised the reader most certainly is not.
However, Tessa being dumb was not the thing that bothered me most about the novel. The thing that bothered me most was the random addition of a character called Karen, who literally only appears once in the novel and serves no other purpose than to drive Tessa and her love interest, Jack, apart. It was poor writing at best. Jack is also a complete jackass as he leaves Tessa after sleeping with her to live with Karen, who he had an affair with earlier in the year. Karen then dumps him for unknown reasons and he goes back to Tessa. She stupidly takes him because he tells her he loved her all along and didn’t really want to get back together with Karen, but that he “made her promises”. If you ask me Jack is just a twat. What he did with Karen makes absolutely no sense and didn’t really fit in with his character. The whole minor plot point involving Karen and Jack literally just served to try and create some kind of dramatic climax for the novel, and frankly it was just lazy writing.
All in all, I would give this book 2 stars and that is me being extremely generous. I would not recommend it and will definitely not read it again.

Not read a book in this series for a while been going through a crime thriller splurge. So how lovely to pick this off my shelf and decide to read it. Like pulling on a favourite cosy jumper and feeling surrounded by well known friends. So easy to pick up and read characters all familiar from previous books as the rub along together in the village. Great knowledge of animal care and work required to care for them at the sanctuary. Animal who you wont forget easily. Lovely to sit and pass the time indoors whilst its 34 degrees outside in UK heat wave.
I read the first 4 back-to-back then felt I should take a break, not because I had lost interest, but because I wanted to ration them. I love this series, warm but not sickly sweet with characters you care about and of course a happy ending.
I loved this book. The way the characters come to life and how you can see the settings in your own mind from the description. The story was great and I wanted to have Buster as my dog. Highly recommend this series of books.
4 ⭐ =Good. #5 in the series and really enjoyable. Being a sucker for animals, I love how this book was centred around an animal rescue centre. An easy, feel good read.

Cathy Woodman’s Talyton St George book series is one of my favourite series to read. The Village Vet is the fifth book in the series and although it doesn’t feature Maz and co, not only does it fit in nicely with the rest of the series, it also introduces us to some brilliant new characters who, with luck, we’ll see pop up in future novels. In The Village Vet, the focus is on Tessa who, after running out on her wedding after her old friend Jack interrupts it and spills secrets, takes over the Animal Rescue center in Talyton and finds herself working with Jack, of all people. Though you might expect her to be a little bit mad at Jack, instead Tessa just can’t bring herself to be and they find themselves rediscovering their friendship and quite possibly more…
The big draw with Woodman’s series is the animals, at least for me. I LOVE books with animals in them. Ever since we got our dogs, I’ve been animal mad and no-one writes a novel about animals better than Cathy Woodman. As an ex-vet herself she knows her animals and that absolutely shines through in her novels. If I’m honest, the animals are so well-written that they become characters in themselves, and as Tessa started receiving abanadoned animals, I really fell for Buster and Tia, two dogs Tessa also falls for. Even Dolly, the mad horse, seemed cute. I keep wondering if Woodman can keep making me fall in love with yet more fictional pets, but she does. She totally does. The series is an animal lovers dream, basically.
The whole novel was just really, really sweet. I liked that there were no silly dramas, and the book just flowed so nicely as Tessa struggled to set up the Sanctuary, as she battled the commity who weren’t exactly happy at her instatement, as she employed Jack’s sister Libby to help take care of the animals, and, of course, how Tessa and Jack’s relationship developed. There was a bit of an obvious secret Tessa’s best friend Katie was keeping that I guessed as soon as Katie first appeared in the novel a couple of pages in, and that Tessa was a bit blind (or ignorant) to. But apart from that, I have no complaints. It was nice to see Maz, even briefly, and it was nice to be introduced to yet more residents of Talyton. It makes it seem more real, if that makes sense and Tessa, Jack, Libby and the Sanctuary are characters I can’t wait to see again. Along with Buster and Tia, obviously. I can’t wait until November for the next Talyton adventure, it’s bound to be brilliant.
Having read and enjoyed other books by this author I couldn’t resist buying this one which is number five in the Talyton St George series.
Before the story begins there is a little map of Talyton St George, this is something that I really like because it gives me a clearer picture in my mind of where everything is.
The only issue I have with books about vets is that I find it very difficult to read about hurt/injured animals, even fictional ones, so seeing as this book started off with a dog being hit by a car I kind of felt like I couldn’t read on. Obviously I did carry on reading and I’m glad I did because, as always with books by this author, the personal lives of the villagers are so entertaining that I can forgive a little bit of upset and tears over the animals (I just have to keep reminding myself that they aren’t real!)
Tessa’s wedding day was brilliant, it was very eventful and ended with a bizarre confession from her great-aunt! I was pleased when she decided to take on the running of the animal sanctuary as I felt it would be a fresh start for her, it certainly brought about a lot of changes in her life – some good and some not so good.
I really enjoyed reading about the day-to-day running of the sanctuary, having done some volunteer work at an animal sanctuary myself I loved all the memories it brought back.
The romance side of the story was good, the tension between Tessa and Jack was so exciting to read but just when I thought I had it all figured out something happened that completely shocked me!
There was also a sinister side to the story with Tessa being secretly watched and when all is revealed she found herself in quite a scary situation.
This is another fantastic read from Cathy Woodman, creating a mixture of emotions throughout.
Cathy Woodman schreibt einfach wunderbar warmherzige Geschichten.
“ The Village Vet” is the 5th book in the Talyton St George series and is another stand alone book. However, I would certainly recommend reading the previous 4 books because characters from them pop up in this story and it is good to know their ‘history’.
Vet nurse Tessa is on her way to her wedding when the car she is travelling in hits a dog – the dog is saved but as it turns out it is her wedding doomed as well.
As Tessa tries to put her life back together again, she takes a job, courtesy of her Aunt Fifi, as manager of Talyton Animal Rescue. However, working closely with Jack, an old boyfriend, only adds to the problems that she is facing as manager of a half built sanctuary with an ever increasing population of Talyton’s animal waifs and strays.
A lovely gentle read, nothing challenging but it was good to catch up with old and new residents of Talyton St George.
This book is about 28 year old Tessa Wilde the book starts with her Wedding the car runs a dog over so she is delayed in getting to her Wedding, then Jack Millar (ex boyfriend) stops the Wedding, Tess comes to her senses and leaves Nathan at the Alter. Nathan leaves Tessa drowning in debt her Auntie manages to get Tessa a job at The Animal Rescue Centre as a live in Manager but it's working with Jack is that such a good thing? I enjoyed this book I found it funny easy to read and follow, I would definetely recommend.
Sadly the Village Vet was a dissapointment. It was too slow paced for me and I did not care to read on past 40%. I did not get into the characters and there was not much going on to keep me interested. It is a shame because it started cute and I thought I would love the whole animal element but it dragged for me.
Maybe I will give the rest of the series a shot since I love animal inspired stories so much.
I love this series and enjoyed the book. However I was peeved by the title. The book is not about the Otter House vets in the other books. Tessa Wilde is a vet nurse whose wedding is cancelled at the alter. She takes a job at a animal rescue center where her former boyfriend works. It's a cute read and I have enjoyed all her other books. Aside from the title that has nothing to do with the book I enjoyed every minute.
It's been a while since I'd visited Talyton St George, and the return didn't disapoint me! I loved meeting Tessa, and finding out her story.
As a fan of the earlier books I thought the lack of older characters might be a bit sad, but their stories are still there and I'm falling more in love with the life in Talyton than I was before. (The next 2 books are waiting for me!)
not the best of this series. A lot more predictable and a bit less "new" with the material. The writing is still very easy to read and it is a pleasant read when you are not feeling very deep. I enjoyed the main character who was not a vet for a change. I also liked the casual references to old characters we have met in previous books. I think I will take a longer break from this series now.
I loved this book. I have read the other vet books and really enjoyed them so when I found this one I was happy to read it. Tess is wonderful in her job of being in charge f the local animal rescue shelter . I love how she brings people hope as much as she does animals.
when I first started the book I was sure I knew what was going to happen however there have been many different twists and turns. I knew something was going on with one of the couples, i am glad that it all worked out in the end
Its a bit predictable but was just what I needed when I wasn't very well and didn't have a lot of concentration. a nice easy flowing story and great if you love the idea of rescuing animals - pleasant
Found the title of this one a bit strange, as the story is not about the vet, but a veterinary nurse who helps to run the local animal rescue centre. However, the story was quite good, with a happy ending.
This was not my favourite of the five books, found this one very easy to guess what the outcome was going to be from only a few chapters in. However the book was still enjoyable.
