The story revolves around three sister who like to play dress up, something they picked up from their father who’s a big fan of carnival. But all the other kids and even some adults ridicule them for it. When the whole school teams up against them and makes fun of them, the sisters decide they’ve had enough. With some assistance from a nice old lady who recently moved to their town, the three sisters learn some rather peculiar spooky tricks and come up with a plan. Halloween is coming. The three sisters will dress up as witches. And with those new tricks up their sleeve, they hope to teach all those who mocked them a lesson. But unbeknownst to the sisters, a real witch has come to their town. And she’s also got plans for Halloween.
I absolutely loved this book about witches as a kid. One of the earliest books I fondly remember reading. And it’s easy to see why. The plot is very fast-paced. It’s got a good amount of atmospheric spookiness, with some witty and funny moments thrown in there so that it never gets too scary. It’s easy to root for the sisters. They just wanted to teach their bullies a little lesson. Blinded by their lust for vengeance, they simply ended up trusting the wrong person. Then the whole situation escalates rather quickly and spirals out of control.
Overall, a really fun and enjoyable spooky story about witches. And a heartwarming nostalgic read for me personally. Though the ending could have been better.
