Since discovering the Canadian Flyer, a magical time-traveling sled, in Emily's attic, Matt and Emily have outrun dinosaurs in the Alberta badlands, evaded slave catchers on the Underground Railroad, and seen the last spike driven into the Canadian Pacific Railway. This time, Emily and Matt land on Citadel Hill in Halifax, Nova Scotia — just as the SS Mont Blanc , a ship laden with explosives, explodes in the harbor!

In the chaos that follows, the two friends find a small dog wandering around with Tim, a dazed young soldier who has just returned from fighting overseas in World War I. Can Emily and Matt help Tim find his niece, Carolyn, the dog's owner? What if she's been hurt in the blast and needs help?

Frieda Wishinsky’s fast-paced text makes this chapter book a riveting read, and Patricia Ann Lewis-MacDougall's action-packed illustrations help situate early readers in the time and place of the story. A special section at the back of the book highlights additional historical information as Emily and Matt each collect their favorite ten favorite facts learned on their adventure. Wishinsky shares her favorite facts here too, in a lively Q&A format.

In this adventure series, Canadian Flyer, Emily and Matt travel through time to the Halifax Explosion and Citadel Hill. They meet a young soldier who is looking for his young sister and her dog. Very easy to read. There are quick facts at the end of the book that a young student writing a report could use.

Wonderful series!

Book 1 of the 25 I hope to read for children's, this year.

Reminiscent of the popular Magic Treehouse series, in the Canadian Flyer Adventures a magic sled takes two children back in time to explore important historic Canadian events. Fans of the Magic Treehouse books will love these fast paced, easy to read adventure stories. Short chapters and age appropriate vocabulary make these books perfect for children ready for their first chapter books. These books can each be read as a stand alone story as they begin with a quick summary of how the children found the sled and how it works.
In their seventeenth adventure Matt and Emily arrive in Halifax immediately after the disastrous explosion that took place during WWI. They meet Tim in the damaged city when they find his dog running loose. His younger sister had been walking the dog when the explosion happened, so Matt and Emily join Tim in the search for Carolyn. Together they travel through the city, following her regular route seeing the distruction of buildings and the devastated people.
The educational highlight of this book, as in all of the series are Emily and Matt’s Top Ten Facts and the author’s note. These brief lists build on the information the story covers.
