I read a lot of Archies growing up. Recently, Archie Comics has started putting them out in a new format which conforms to the taller, skinnier size of graphic novel that's the norm for superhero comic books. The characters more or less look the same, and the comics are nicely colored. Character dynamics are still wooden and stereotyped.

In this, a whole bunch of new kids come in and generally beat each Riverdale student at their own archetypical behavior. There's a reporter who out-reports Betty, there's a flashier dresser than Veronica, there's a tougher football player than Moose... Meh. I actually don't remember Reggie being a prankster - I remember him as more of an arrogant a-hole who couldn't seem to beat Archie for the affections of Betty and Veronica. Most of the new kids are "diverse" in some way - there's a kid of Asian-descent, a blind girl, a guy named Sayid...

Whatever. I'm curious if the "Married Life" series is more thought-provoking. But I suspect I've just outgrown this type of storytelling.

I never read this Archie's magazines before, I am impressed witch the quality of the graphics, the amount of detail they put on the scenes and how the characters are not dressed in the same outfit all the life, they have always something new. I liked that it is easy to recognize each one of the characters also, face and bodies keep the same during all the magazine, it is not like other graphic magazines or books where you need to know who is in the scene because the lack of color or definition. The stories were just fun stories to follow, nothing that will amaze you, but it is a magazine and it was distracting.

This is a fine all-ages read, but the political correctness drives me crazy. I can understand how there's a fine line to be drawn in the wholesomeness of the material presented in Archie books, but I really think the stories would be more poignant if the approach were modernized and made realistic. My 11 year old daughter explained to me how she liked this book while reminding me how she loathed the wretched Archie meets Kiss book that we borrowed from the library before this one. Your mileage may vary.

I liked reading Archie comics while growing up, so this was a trip down memory lane. Getting updates on the familiar crew of characters and learning about the "new kids" that are introduced. Seems like most of the new kids are there to add diversity - one is Native American, one Asian, one Latina, one handicapped (blind), etc - the students are given some back story and seems to get along with the old gang once a few misunderstandings are worked out. Liked the side story of "Prankenstein".

This is such a great story! I had such a great time reading it and I love the joy the characters bring to the pages every time I pick up an Archie book. I think those who love Archie as much as I do should pick this one up!
