A Sudden Glory: God's Lavish Response to Your Ache for Something More

Rate this book
Do you long for something more in your relationship with God?

The good news is that “something more” does not mean “doing more.” God is not waiting for you to get your spiritual life “right.” He wants to be with you right where you are.

The real question is not “What does God want from you?” but “What does God want for you?”

Sharon Jaynes understands what it’s like to have a “glory ache”—a longing to experience God’s presence on a daily basis. She also knows how easily working for God can get in the way of intimacy with God. And she’s discovered that we tend to make our faith journey much too hard.

In A Sudden Glory, Sharon uses Scripture and story to help you erase the line between your “spiritual life” and your “daily life” as you enter the sanctuary of God’s presence even in the middle of your busy, messy day. Here you will find your eyes opened to moments of sudden glory in which the Creator assures you of His love as you live and move and have your being in Him. Here you will discover true freedom—the freedom of experiencing God in a deeper and more intimate way than ever before.

I was given a copy of A sudden Glory to read for review through blogging for books. I really cant tell you how much I loved this book, This is the kind of Christian book I long to read. This should actually be required reading for all Christians new and old because you will get so much out of it and each page is filled with tons of wisdom.

Sharon Jaynes is such a fantastic writer, this book helps you understand that the question is not What does God want from you, but rather what does God want for you. Each page is filled with ways Sharon as learned to recognize the sudden glory moments in her life and how you can too.
This is the kind of book I would love to buy copies of and pass them out to all my friends and family .

If you are looking for a really great book to read for your devotional time or in a book club setting I highly suggest you put this book on your list to buy. The book also has a journaling section and study questions.

A Sudden Glory By Sharon Jaynes is a really great book that will uplift you teach you and help you become closer to God. I will be re reading this book because its not one of those book you just want to read once but rather a book you want to study and continue to lean from. I am so Happy I was able to review it. Into Chapter 5 of 10...leading a Sunday class through this. The ladies are raving, the book is wonderful. I love Sharon Jayne's depth and ability to clarify what she has learned from the Lord. We went through What God Really Thinks About Women a couple of years back and I fell more in love with Jesus through that study than ever in 24 years. His heart for women is really astounding! A Sudden Glory is a perfect follow-up to the former because of it's clear message of God's desire for intimacy and oneness with each one of us, His children! The other reviewers have done a great job describing the book! Excellent read all the way through! :)

This was a great book with really sound Biblical principles. I think I just found myself struggling with the last few chapters, as it felt like some of the content was both challenging and triggering to me with my own personal struggles in my walk with God. It has given me a lot to consider and a lot to chew on.

Sharon Jaynes in her new book, “A Sudden Glory” published by Waterbrook Press shows us God’s Lavish Response to Your Ache for Something More.

From the inside jacket flap: Do you long for something more in your relationship with God?

There came a point where Moses couldn’t stand it anymore and he cried out to God, “Show me your glory.” Sharon Jaynes feels that we all have that deep need in us to see God’s glory and she calls it the “glory ache”, a persistent longing to experience God’s presence on a daily basis. We sometimes try to find His glory by being busy, figuring that maybe God will be so happy with what we have done for Him that He will manifest Himself with His glory. However that is not the way God operates. Ms. Jaynes tells the story of the tightrope walker over Niagara Falls who wanted to really cement his reputation by walking with another person on his back across the rope. He told his partner, who was scared silly, that they must become one. When the tightrope walked swayed the other must sway, if they didn’t move as one, if the other adjusted himself both were going into the Falls to their death. The disciples were in a boat in a terrible storm and went to Jesus fearing for their lives because He was asleep in the boat. What they forgot entirely was that He was in the boat with them and He was in charge. Ms. Jaynes gives us the ability to refocus on thinking so that we zero in more on Jesus and less on our circumstances. When we do that we find ourselves more alert to the presence of God and then we get to fill our “glory ache”. Ms. Jaynes does a much better job in her book, “A Sudden Glory” then I ever will. I recommend reading this book and experiencing how to see the glory of God for yourself. You will be blessed. This is not a book that you will read once and then forget about it. It is a book that you will come back to again and again because we let ourselves get busy and we forget. Your family and friends would also benefit from receiving this book as a gift. They will read, be blessed, and thank you for thinking of them. I recommend this book highly!

So I reluctantly chose A Sudden Glory- God's Lavish Response to Your Ache for Something More as a book to read for review. Why was I reluctant? After all Sharan Jaynes is an international speaker and author of 17 books. She served as vice president and radio co-host of Proverbs 31 Ministries for ten years...stop right there. I just thought to myself, without realizing it, another Christian Woman book. Yadda, yadda, yadda. Blah. But still, something in the description compelled me to choose it despite the fact I expected less than anything grand. As you can see I am getting cynical now that I am a bonafide book reviewer! Ha!

Well I was wrong, it is a truly grand book! This book is filled with life changing truth and seasoned with extraordinary levels of grace expressed in a way that I found to be easy to move through yet profoundly beautiful and uplifting.

So let me tell you about the greatest book I have read this year and why you need to read it too.
Are you ready?

One verse of scripture should tell you :

In Him we live, and move and have our being.
Acts 17:28

Sharon bases her whole work on this premise.
On this prerequisite for life in Christ.
That this living and moving and having our being can be attained,
is in fact being attained. Moment by moment.
Glory to glory.
We can choose every moment and
can see holy ground everywhere...
or nowhere.
Momentary glimpses of God when He makes himself known to
each one of us uniquely, is what Sharon refers to as moments of sudden glory.
She says it like this, "I call those moments when God makes Himself
known to you personally a sudden glory -
an intimate moment with your Creator, the Lover of your soul, a glimpse of heaven."
Sharon begs us the question to ask God what He wants
for us instead of what He wants from us.
She begins with God's glory in Chapter One and continues the upward journey throughout the entire book coaching us on to greater depth than we have dared to consider before.

Here is a journey through chapter topics and titles:
His pursuit of us;
learning to live in sacred union;
joining him in continual conversation;
daring to raise our expectations;
saying yes to his invitation to dance;
trusting him in difficult times;
seeing Him through a lens of gratitude and grace;
choosing intimate relationship over routine religion.
Each chapter takes us closer to the beautiful reality and potential we all long for.
Intimacy with the One True Living God.
She reminds us that all things are possible when the sacred and the secular
merge together in a divine and miraculous sudden glory, in the daily ordinary moments called life.

A Sudden Glory

I love reading a book by author Sharon Jaynes; she is a wonderful speaker, author and woman of God. It seems that she knows what I am going through every time I pick up one of her books. A Sudden Glory was no different, it is a must read for all woman.
Sharon uses her own personal stories and the word of God to teach us about “a glory ache.” What is a glory ache you ask? Sharon describes a glory ache as being a persistent longing to experience God’s presence on a daily basis. I know personally I feel this way a lot and this feeling leaves me thinking I’m not doing enough for God so I find more things to do but that’s not what we should be doing.

I love this quote that Sharon makes in this book, “the real question is not “What does God want from you?” but “What does God want for you?” Sharon describes a day when she is having her quiet time and God reveals this to her by revealing Acts 17:28 In Him we live, we move and have our being. Wow, is all I can say, if we truly listened for God’s voice sometimes we will see that all God wants for us is to be still and listen.

I encourage every one of you to pick a copy of A Sudden Glory up and read it, expect a change of heart and expect for her to step on your toes. I am so thankful that God has blessed Sharon Jaynes with the ability to write what He lays on her heart.

The real question is not, "What does God want from you?" but "What does God want for you?"

This is the spirit in which this book was written. God is not waiting for the perfect you, He wants to be with you now.

Jaynes has produced another inspirational up-lifter of a book. Inside you'll read the common pep-talk chapters:

God is pursuing you
God is continually talking to you
Trust God in tough times
Choose relationship over religious routine

And many others.

You've read one inspirational tale, you've read them all. This one takes Jaynes' personal story and adds that little insight to make it personal for you. This does not make this book bad at all. It's just one too many inspirational tales for me this weekend. The personal stories give the book just the edge it needs to keep this from being a carbon copy.

If you're tired from the ritual/routine of Bible reading and praying to the ceiling, this book may help you understand how there is no such thing as a spiritual life apart from your actual life.

Jaynes fills this book with Scriptural references and included a helpful Bible study and discussion guide at the end. (Which have become commonplace in these books)

Jaynes writes her response to all those who are seeking “something more” in their Christian lives. She asserts that the deeper relationship with Christ comes in living out the truth of “in Him we live and move and have our being”—day by day, in the ordinary, mundane vicissitudes of life, growing in our awareness of His abiding presence and peace, looking for the moments of “sudden glory” when God shows up and reveals Himself when we raise our expectations of finding Him. Practicing the presence of God, along with expressing gratitude, will bring believers into a deeper relationship with Christ. Well written, with numerous personal illustrations from her own life and the lives of others. A study guide is included, excellent for individual or small group use. So many times, I found myself saying, "Yes, that's exactly what I think." There were times when I felt as if Jaynes were reading my mind and transcribing what I have been thinking.

Those magical, uplifting moments when you feel Gods love and presence - a sudden glory! This book is for women who need reassurance and redirection in and towards God. It takes you on a journey through Sharons life and experiences. She shares her stories, influences and the scriptures that helped and guided her relationship with God.
I liked this book a lot. I think I may be a little biased in saying that it reminded me of Joyce Meyers book "How to Hear From God." It was repetitious for me but did serve it's purpose.
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone seeking a closer look at Christianity or some advice in finding God. I would easily award this book three stars, but I didn't find it original enough for four stars.

**Thank you Sharon and Goodreads first-reads for the free ARC!! **

I really tried to enjoy this book, but it is a book that I was forced to sit down and read. I’d carry it with me with the intention of reading, but I’d read a few pages and not feel it pull me in further to read. Maybe I just didn’t try hard enough, or perhaps my head was “cleared” enough to read it.

That said, the description of the book is what lured me in. I think as women, we all have an ache in our souls, and her description of the glory ache made me want to read more. But again, every time I’d pick it up, I’d find myself flipping pages, seeking a reason to slowly read, and delve into the book. But I couldn’t.

The cover art was nice, enough to make me select the book. I may try reading the book in the future again, hopefully then I can get more involved. Her stories were interesting, but I, was seeking more.

I love the writings of Sharon Jaynes. We used this book as a Bible study for our Women's Circle last year. I missed the last few meetings but finished reading the book. God gives us "sudden glories" every day. We as busy people just have to stop and recognize them. He speaks to us - we just need to listen. It is am amazing book which makes you realize those "little things" that tug at your heart or those little things you enjoy seeing are actually "love notes from God". Those things that happen in our lives some people call coincidences are not - there are no coincidences - these are Sudden Glories from our loving God.

This is a very encouraging book. She gives many of her own experiences to illustrate becoming aware of those moments of sudden glory, when God makes Himself known personally. She explores what union in Christ means. She has a good section on suffering. There is a twenty four page study guide included too. This would make a great study for a woman's group. I am loving this book. It takes some time to get through it. But you will grow spiritual and find some things you have been missing. I read it like a devotional.
Right now with things I am struggling through, it is keeping me from losing it.
Really loved this book. It made me stop and think a lot. It will encourage you and cause you to grow.

This was a very good book on Gods presence in your life. Favorite quote "So we fix our eyes not on what is seen (our circumstances), but on what is unseen (God's presence). For what is seen is temporary. And why is unseen is eternal."
